Classic, Jazz, Rock and Theatre Presentations Promise to Warm Up the Winter in Style Our 2014 season marks 14 years of presenting entertainment for Long Islanders at the Dix Hills Preforming Arts Center. SPREADING CHEER - Santa Claus and his helpers arrived by train at NUMC, playing holiday music, with the Nassau County Police Medic Association, to bring joy and toys to the pediatric patients. They went to the pediatric emergency department, the 18th floor and the pediatric clinic. They brought cookie platters for the staff on 18th and in the emergency department, and left board games for the 18th floor to have for the children. Stuff-A-Boat Success

Sea Tow is proud to announce that the “StuffA-Boat” donation drive for the 2013 holiday season was a huge success. Sponsored nationally by Sea Tow Services International, the nation’s leading marine assistance service provider, and hosted by Sea Tow operators across the country, the campaign’s goal is to provide those less fortunate in local communities with some badly needed assistance and cheer during the 2013 holiday season. The Southold “Stuff a Boat” donation drive hosted by Sea Tow Services International, Inc., took place December 7th through 14th. All collected donations benefited CAST

(Community Action of Southold Town) as well as NFAWL (the North Fork Animal Welfare League) and were delivered on Tuesday, December 17th despite the snow. Sea Tow International employees gathered in the morning and stuffed the Sea Tow Twin-Vee boat that had been servicing Montauk boaters this past summer with all the donations. Students from Mattituck High School as well as Southold Pack 6 Cub Scouts volunteered to be at Sea Tow International headquarters and collect donations. Sea Tow hosted a raffle for the Cub Scout volunteers, and another raffle for the Southold and Mattituck/Cutchogue

Elementary Schools students who made donations. The Webelos 1 den won the Scout raffle, and Aiden Russell, a 5th grader from Southold Elementary, won the school raffle. “The ‘Stuff a Boat’ campaign is our way of giving back to Southold and to other local communities nationwide,” said Capt. Universal Pre-K Program Parents with a child/ children who will be 4 years old on or before December 1st, 2014 in the Levittown School District are invited to apply for admission to the Universal Prekindergarten Program during the 2014-2015 school year. The half-day program will be housed at one of our UPK providers beginning in September 2014 for 180 days through June 2015, roughly coinciding with the Levittown School District calendar. The program has limited

space and participants will be chosen during a random lottery selection process. A waiting list will be established to fill any vacancies that may arise. On Saturday, December 7th, at 9 a.m. in the morning, members of the Knights of Pythias and volunteers met at the John West School in Bethpage. It was the 18th consecutive year that the Knights of Pythias Coats for Kids Committee met with area coordinators Jean and Jack Geagen for this charitable event. Through the efforts of Jean and Jack Geagan,

almost a thousand coats and assorted items were collected in the area schools and businesses and brought to the John West School. Members of the Knights of Pythias then delivered the coats and other items to those in need. Coats are brought to many places - upstate, downstate and in between. The coats have numbered into many, many thousands over the

past 18 years, and the organizations and people receiving these coats will always remember the kindness of those who donated in times of need. The generous spirit of the Levittown School District community rang true through the collection of hundreds of items for needy families during the district’s 5th Annual Adopt-A-Family program. Under the direction of Gina Interdonato and Esta Lachow, more than 209 individuals will

experience the season of giving, evidenced by the collection of toys, clothes and household items that packed the Board of Education meeting room at Levittown Memorial Education Center. On December 16th, Board of Education trustees, administrators, staff, students and

community members gathered to wrap the gifts prior to distribution. “Because of the economy, so many families and individuals were in need of our services this year,” Ms. Lachow said. “We really had an outpouring of gifts this year, and they keep coming.”

The spirit of giving rang true throughout Mandalay Elementary School in the Wantagh School District as student council members collected toys for the John Theissen Children’s Foundation to benefit children in need. Mr. Theissen came to the school to personally thank the students and adviser

Cheryl Schwartz for their efforts and to pick up the boxes of toys collected during the last several weeks. Mr. Theissen spoke to students about the history and goals of his foundation, which aims to fulfill the wishes of children battling illnesses and help needy families with medical

expenses. “This year, a number of children told me they just needed a winter coat,” Mr. Theissen told the students. “There are so many children in this community who are cold and do not have essentials. Your toy drive will make many children happy this holiday season.”

Abbey Lane Elementary School student council members received an exciting opportunity to speak to New York Islanders Brian Strait and Kevin Regin about how to become effective leaders in their school community. The Long Island hockey players visited the Levittown elementary school and

dispensed advice on ways to set positive examples and be viewed as leaders by their peers, administrators and teachers. “When people see you making good decisions, they will believe in you,” Mr. Regin told the students. “You can be a leader without putting on a jersey.” Mr. Strait told the

students that the choices they make will set them up for their future. He also stressed teamwork and setting goals to accomplish student council agendas. Mr. Regin recommended that, most importantly, each student strive to be a good person and listen to his or her parents for guidance.
