he Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club at Division Avenue High School in Levittown participated in NYS Assemblyman David McDonough’s 12th Annual Coats for Kids Campaign, an event that seeks donations of children and adult coats for people in need. The Honor Roll recognizes institutions of higher education that support exemplary community service programs and raise the visibility of effective practices in campus community partnerships. During the past year, Old Westbury students have completed over 16,000 hours of service to various local organizations. “As part of our mission, we believe in integrating the classroom and the community,” said College President Calvin O. On The Horizon By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As we raise a toast to the New Year upon us, let me take a moment to personally thank all of you – the readers – for your continued support throughout the years. As I embark on year number 10 of my tenure here at South Bay’s Neighbor, I am fast approaching another mini-milestone of sorts with this very column. In ten weeks, I will pen (or type, as the case may be) In Step #500. So many topics have been

touched on throughout the years, some inspired by the very fan mail and feedback I have received from all of you. It is with that in mind that I invite you to submit your own suggestions for future columns, en route to the next milestone, whatever it may be. Every writer writes for him or herself; at least, they should. But, without readers, there is little self-satisfaction to be had. So your feedback is welcome. Student Spotlight GIVING BACK TO OTHERS Over the Christmas holiday, I had a wonderful opportunity to help sick children who were in need. My sisters and I made gift bags and homemade Christmas cards to send to children in Africa. We made two groups of bags, one set for girls, one set for boys. The girls’ bags contained nail polish, toiletry items, coloring books, crayons and stuffed animals. The boys’ bags contained hot wheel cars, toiletry items, coloring books and stuffed animals. The gifts that we made were sent out to Ghana, Africa a couple of weeks ago. The children in Africa got their gifts on Christmas Day. The organization that transported the gift bags and

cards to the children in Africa is called the Foundation of Orthopedics and Complex Spine, known as (FOCOS). FOCOS helps children in Africa who are diagnosed with scoliosis, which is a severe curvature of the spine. I enjoyed this volunteer effort. Another volunteer effort I participated in during the week leading up to Christmas was putting together food baskets for people in need. I volunteer at the Zion Gospel Food Pantry on a monthly bases. Our pantry serves people in need 52 weeks a year. We double our donation efforts during Thanksgiving, Christmas and Easter. Our food pantry is a designated pick-up

organization for Island Harvest and Long Island Cares. I go to pick up the food twice a week from these organizations. Once again this year, in addition to food, we also gave toys out to those families who are less fortunate. Our church is also a designated distribution organization for Toys-for-Tots. We utilize this resource every year at Christmas to bring joy to children in need throughout our community. Reaching out and giving back throughout the year is always important. However, the Christmas season should always be a time to be even more kind and giving to those less fortunate than us.

CHROMEBOOK LESSON - Seventh grade students at St. Edward the Confessor School in Syosset use Chromebooks to write a science lab report about cricket chirping at various temperatures. Students used Google Apps to create experimental design graphics, charts and graphs, and the final text of their experimental write up.

Principal Carolyn Breivogel congratulated the inductees for living out the tenets of the National Honor Society, while keynote speaker and science teacher Odysseas Svolos said these students have always impressed him. “The potential these students gain from their education will serve them well long after they leave us,” he said. Division Avenue High School senior-athlete Megann Santiago has committed to play volleyball at Goldey Beacom College located in Wilmington Delaware. Santiago has been a two-

Wantagh High School’s National Honor Society inducted 97 new members during a traditional candlelighting ceremony in the auditorium. The evening featured words of wisdom from administrators and staff, musical interludes by the high school’s string chamber ensemble and the singing of the National Anthem by Kayla Knight. Superintendent of Schools Maureen Goldberg noted that the inductees have made choices and sacrifices to reach this pinnacle of success, and challenged the students to continue on this path of achievement. “The challenge is not to rest on your laurels, but to strive to achieve loftier goals,” she said.

Bowling Green Elementary School fifthgrade teacher Jennifer Abshire’s class spearheaded a schoolwide toy drive this holiday season. Staff and students made various donations to the cause and the class raised $2,000, which was used to purchase holiday gifts. The class later traveled

with parents and staff to Toys “R” Us in Carle Place to purchase arts and crafts, LEGO toys, as well as educational items including board games and puzzles. Funds were also used to purchase other items, including hats. To assist with the effort, fourth-grade teacher Carly Cutrone’s class created

labels which were placed on the gifts. In addition, third-grade teacher Alison Gallina’s class wrote holiday greeting cards to accompany the gifts. All gifts will be donated to families within the Bowling Green Elementary community.

Taking A Trip Students in Amanda Kowalski’s first-grade class at the Charles A. Reinhard Early Childhood Center in Bellmore took a trip around the world in class to see how different countries celebrate the holiday season. During the weeklong lesson, countries studied

included Sweden (St. Lucia Day), Israel (Hannukah), Kenya (Kwanzaa) and Mexico (Christmas.) On December 18th, students and parents worked together to create different holiday crafts, including wreaths, poinsettias, dreidels and Kwanzaa flags. They also had the

Character Matters

Fourth-grade students in the Character Drama Club at Winthrop Avenue School in Bellmore performed Ron Fink and John Heath’s musical “Character Matters” for family and friends on

December 16th. Through the use of famous fairy tale characters, catchy musical numbers and humorous lines, the play, which was directed by Erica Davis, Dr. Diana Mitchell and Marjorie

“The Polar Express” about an old-fashioned steam train that takes children to the North Pole to see Santa off on his annual sleigh ride. At Wantagh, the students decorated bells after an English language arts activity that studied words that rhymed with “bell.” They created paper trains, wrote a sentence about their voyage and even crafted a cup of hot

chocolate. At Mandalay, the students made a Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer sandwich out of bread, cream cheese, pretzels, strawberries and raisins. They crafted decorations out of buttons and completed word searches and word mazes, as well as a connect-the-dots train. The afternoon ended with a cup of hot chocolate to keep the cold away.

Coats For Kids The Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) Club at Division Avenue High School in Levittown participated in NYS Assemblyman David McDonough’s 12th annual Coats for Kids Campaign, an event that seeks donations of children and adult coats for people in need. Thanks to the generosity

of the school community, the SADD club collected more than 75 coats, scarves, gloves and hats this year. “These donations will help keep many needy people warm this winter, and it is my privilege to once again be able to conduct this program,” Assemblyman McDonough said.

Under the direction of Marianne Masopust, the club members were delighted in the opportunity to give back to the Levittown community by participating in the Coats for Kids campaign and were pleased with the overwhelming response they received to their collection drive.

Season Of Sparkle The Wisdom Lane Middle School Peer Buddies club designed and decorated a tree that was on display at the Long Island Festival of Trees during Thanksgiving weekend at the Cradle of Aviation Museum.

The tree was offered for sale and proceeds went to United Cerebral Palsy of Nassau. Wisdom’s “Season of Sparkle” tree was also judged as the third-place winner in handcrafted trees. Students in the IDC

(special needs) program went to the museum to decorate the tree with all of the ornaments, and art teacher Carla Herbert and teacher aide Pat DeGiso were instrumental in the success of this project.

The aroma of icing, graham crackers and candy set a festive tone as Gardiners Avenue Elementary School kindergarten students crafted gingerbread houses. Assisted by parents, the creations were the

culminating activity for an English language arts unit that focused on multiple stories about the Gingerbread Man. After reading a number of stories about this popular legend, the students compared and contrasted the books’ similarities

and differences, discussed the genre of fantasy and studied the use of setting, character and problem and solution within each of the writings. The students also discussed why this popular story is retold throughout the ages.

Attention Parents Parents who have a child/children residing in the Levittown School District and have attained the age of four years on or before December 1st, 2015 are invited to apply for admission, on behalf of their child, to the 2015-2016 Universal PreKindergarten Program. The program is a halfday program, which will be housed at one of our UPK providers beginning in September of 2015 for 180 days through June 2016, roughly coinciding with the Levittown School District calendar. space and participants will be chosen during a random lottery selection process. A waiting list will be established to fill any vacancies that may arise. The generous spirit of the Levittown community rang true as hundreds of items were collected for families in need during the Levittown School District’s sixth annual Adopt-AFamily program. Under the direction of Gina Interdonato and Esta Lachow, 202 individuals

will experience the season of giving, evidenced by the collection of toys, clothes and household items that packed the Board of Education meeting room at Levittown Memorial Education Center. On December 16th, Board of Education trustees, administrators, staff,

students and community members gathered to wrap the gifts prior to distribution. “Because of the economy, so many families and individuals were in need of our services this year,” Ms. Lachow said. “We really had an outpouring of gifts, and they keep coming.”

Division Avenue High School seniors Graciela Espin and Krysten Garcia were selected as national semifinalists in the 2014-2015 CocaCola Scholars Program for their leadership, academic achievement and commitment to the community. The Coca-Cola Scholars Program is one of the nation’s most recognized corporate scholarship sponsors, with more than 4,250 students benefitting from approximately $38 million in college scholarship awards. Espin is a member of the

National Honor Society and the World Language Honor Society. She is a member of the Key Club and Humanitarian Club, and serves as a Peer Leader. An avid athlete, Espin is a former member of the lacrosse and track teams, but now concentrates fully on dancing. Garcia is also a member of the National Honor Society and World Language Honor Society. She is a member of the Key Club and Science Olympiad and serves as student council senior liaison. Garcia is a Ronald MacDonald House volunteer, and when she

Once semifinalist applications are reviewed, 250 regional finalists will be chosen to continue the selection process, and regional finalists will be determined in late January. Finalists will then interview in person or via web conference to become one of 150 Coca-Cola Scholars. Students selected as Coca-Cola Scholars will attend Scholars Weekend in Atlanta from April 16th-19th, 2015 to receive a scholarship totaling $20,000 from the CocaCola Scholars Foundation.
