Grand Ave., Baldwin) from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. “TOH Mulchfest is an environmentally conscious program that encourages residents to turn their beloved Christmas Tree into mulch for their gardens, lawns or compost piles,” said Clavin. “Instead of disposing of the trees through regular sanitation, we are proud to offer this greener option for residents looking to keep their Christmas Tree yearround.” To participate in TOH Mulchfest, residents are asked to safely transport their Christmas Tree to Baldwin Park on January 9th from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Town of Hempstead employees will then run the tree through a woodchipper and return a bag of mulch to the resident. The entire process will be contactfree and completely safe. Residents are reminded to remove decorations prior to bringing their Christmas Tree to the park.
Residents who cannot make either of the TOH Mulchfest dates will have the option to dispose of their Christmas Trees at a designated drop-off location at Baldwin Park, Friday, January 8th, Monday, January 11th and Tuesday, January 12th. Please follow the signage at Baldwin Park to the drop-off location, which will be open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on those designated dates. Mulch has a variety of uses in gardening and landscaping, and the organic mulch produced from shredded Christmas Trees is
helpful for the environment and will improve the organic content of your soil structure. Any excess mulch will be kept by the park and used for future landscaping procedures. What’s more, this program contributes to a greener footprint from Hempstead Town. “Bring your Christmas Tree down to Baldwin Park and dispose of it the safe and environmentally sound way,” said Clavin. “I look forward to continuing this tradition for many years to come!”

What has come since that group was formed is truly a miracle.” The mission of this non-profit is to assist and advocate for people in our Long Island community who are in need of assistance. Their goal is to empower people to overcome poverty and live prosperous lives. They truly provide a wide range of services and goods to people in crisis, however anyone can come shop at their Patchogue store, which is located at 350-23 East Main Street. Angels of Long Island typically holds many outreach events during the year such as a Back to School Drive, Thanksgiving Assistance, a Coat Drive, Christmas Help and more. However, due to the pandemic they aren’t holding all of these outreach events. Ones that are held are designed with safety in mind. This past December the charity held a huge Christmas Help outreach event, where many people in need were able to come to an outdoor event and children could choose up to five gifts along with grabbing hats, gloves and scarves. Then their entire family could choose from tasty food items to bring home for a Christmas meal, along with being able to shop for other food items to bring home. All of this was free of charge to the children and families who participated. There are many ways you can help out with Angels of Long Island and there is much more to write about. Sometimes the things we don’t expect and haven’t prepared for turn out to be the most lifechanging experiences. Angels of Long Island is a 501(c) (3) nonprofit organization that somewhat formed itself back in 2015. Debbie and Brittany, a mother and daughter duo turned a small Facebook group into a fast growing non-profit organization that helps countless Long Islanders in need. Six years ago these two ladies knew of someone in need of clothing and simply wanted to see if they could be of help. They decided to start a Facebook group in hopes of spreading the word and receiving donations for this person in need. They posted a message and went on with their day, later checking in to find themselves overwhelmed with the response. Whoever doubts that there aren’t people with good hearts that are willing to help a neighbor in need is wrong, fortunately! Debbie and Brittany named the Facebook group Angels of Long Island and members would post about ways they could help others in crisis on Long Island. The group continued to gain in momentum and members, so much so that Debbie and Brittany decided to open up a storefront location in Patchogue called Angels of Long Island. Their slogan Neighbors helping neighbors is a great reflection of what this thriving thrift store/boutique/ donation center does. “We work so hard to keep our store clean and beautiful so that all of our customers who walk through our doors feels a sense of dignity and respect shopping at our store,” says Debbie. “We are not like your average thrift store! We carry designer brands and offer a unique experience. I did not expect to be running a thriving non-profit organization that has a

Levittown Council Announces Home For The Holidays Winners Levittown Community Council’s Facebook page (https://www.facebook.com/ LevittownCommunityCouncilInc/) is buzzing with pictures of homes decorated for the holidays and celebrating the winners of this year’s contest. This year, the Council, via social media, requested nominations from the public and four houses were nominated to be in the running. The online contest was very successful with hundreds of votes counted. The first place winners are Debbie and Richie Mongiello of 36 Club Lane, Levittown. The couple, now in their 60s, have been elaborately decorating the house for more than 28 years with 2019 the exception when Debbie was undergoing cancer treatment. All is good with her now and the couple were eager to decorate for 2020. The home is close to Gardiners Avenue Elementary School and Debbie and Richie love to see the children, who are walking by their home, stop to admire the decorations. This year, while they were decorating, a gentleman stopped his car and told them how happy he was that Christmas was coming back to their house this year. These reasons, and the fact that their five grandchildren love it, says Debbie, are why the hard work is worth h it. “It is our way of saying thank you to our neighbors and fine community, and, hopefully spreading some joy, especially this year!” Taking second in the number of votes submitted, is the Elie family – Jeff, Gina, Brianna and Taylor. Decorating their home at 418 Parker Avenue, Levittown has been an Elie tradition for many years. Inspired by the holiday season they add more lights and decorations each year. “My husband and our daughter Taylor (who is 11) are the masterminds and engineers of our outdoor holiday decorations,” says Gina. The home undergoes a two-day transition right after Thanksgiving, without concern for the weather conditions. For many passers-by, the house has become a backdrop for photos, which the family loves to see. The third place winner in this year’s Home for the Holidays contest is the Foschino family of 59 Stonecutter Lane, Levittown. Michael, his wife Jackie and their children Vincent and Juliana expand the display each year. This year’s addition, a family project, are Christmas trees they made out of plywood and painted. Inspired by television’s “The Christmas Light Fight Show” and Jackie’s Uncle Gerry’s house in Carle Place, the family is motivated

Photo courtesy of Levittown Community Council, Inc. to improve the display each year. “This year, the display is extra special,” says Michael, “because with all the COVID concerns, we feel that our display can maybe brighten someone’s day.” Honorable Mention in this year’s contest goes to the Testamark family at 86 Tanager Lane, Levittown. Commenting on this year’s Mickey” theme, Linda Testamark says, “It is a wonderful family tradition to decorate our home for the Christmas season and share it with our Levittown community. We take pride in this family event and nothing is better, especially now during these times, to have activities like this that build memories for years to come.” The Levittown Community Council, was established in 1998 and has sponsored the Home for the Holidays contest for more than 21 years. This is the first time, the contest was held online.
Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay. The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
