Holiday Rhythm Young musicians at Saw Mill Road Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District have been getting ready for their upcoming holiday singalong.
Each grade has been assigned a different role in the concert, and students have been practicing under the direction of music teacher Amy Yencharis. Fifth-graders have been
using boomwhackers and bells to play “Jolly Old St. Nicholas.” These rehearsals have taught them about rhythm and note reading, and how to play together as an ensemble.

Successful dancer, singer and actress Julia Macchio - daughter of renowned actor, director, producer and filmmaker Ralph Macchio - recently conducted a Master Class at Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). A number of LIHSA dance students participated in the class, where Ms. Macchio shared her experiences on stage, in film and with the auditioning process. She led students in a dance lesson and
offered individualized critiques of each student’s performance. The class was part of the school’s Master Class program, in which students learn under the guidance of some of the greatest talents in the industry. Previous master classes have been led by Mr. Ralph Macchio, the internationally renowned Pilobolus Dance Theater, dancer Alex Brady of the Twyla Tharp Dance Company, Long Island Sound Vocal Jazz Ensemble and America’s Got Talent

It was the best of times; it was the worst of times. So was the year 2016, at times. And so we bid farewell, and look ahead to 2017 with the same mix of enthusiasm and anxiety, optimism and apprehension. All years are a product of their individual months, weeks, days, hours even. Highs and lows become woven into the fabric of our being and, somehow, intertwine into yet another chapter of life. As much as the collective opinion seems to hold that this past year was one of the
most trying on record, for many reasons, I’m sure it held just as much hope and promise for others. It’s all a matter of perspective. Ultimately, each moment needs to be taken on its own, able to stand up by itself and not be compared and contrasted to the big picture. Too much focus on the future, and on things beyond our control, leads to missing those opportunities right in front of us. This is not to say that we should forgo any life plans we may have; but there is a balance. As we analyze and overthink, life marches on around us.
And so the goal, this year, should be to live, to experience, to embrace those moments swirling around us. And to savor them. Good, bad or indifferent, everything happens for a reason. We may not understand the dynamics of why, or what it may lead to down the road; but eventually, the path becomes clearer. The important thing is not to stray too far off the road in the meantime. The idealism in all of us suggests that the best is yet to come. Here’s hoping that 2017 is exactly that for everyone.

Home for the Holidays Unfortunately, as the numbers of homeless with special needs continues to grow on Long Island, there are no easy answers to the crisis. “The number of homeless households in Nassau and Suffolk Counties increased 25% in the last three years, from 548 households in 2013 to 682 households in 2016, according to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless.” But the victories come one family at a time. And a formerly homeless family of four will be spending their first holiday season in their new home in Mattituck, thanks to their efforts and assistance from the
nonprofit Community Housing Innovations (CHI). Regina Nielsen and her three children moved in to their new home on December 1st, five and a half years after she and her family ended up in a CHI emergency shelter. After six months in emergency housing, Ms. Nielsen was accepted into CHI’s supportive housing program, which provided her with the tools to gain independence. Often, families with special needs become trapped in a cycle of dependency, as their benefits alone are insufficient to maintain stable housing and they

three months. She also has a son who was one year old, at the time, and daughter, then 10. From emergency housing in Middle Island, CHI accepted her into the agency’s transitional housing in a home in East Patchogue. Due to the lack of permanent housing, CHI extended her lease at that home for almost two years, enabling Ms. Nielsen to care for her children and get back on her feet. This month Ms. Nielsen and her family moved into a new home, independent of CHI. Due to the help she received at CHI, Ms. Nielsen was able to become the kind of parent she has always wanted to be. Her older daughter was being bullied at school. She was able to get her the help she needed, sending her to a therapist and addressing it with the school. That same daughter will graduate early from high school this June and has already been

succumb to the stress of an impossible situation, devoting all of their time to finding the rent. In supportive housing, Ms. Nielsen not only gained affordable rental housing, her case managers and social workers helped with life skills, job training, health care, and linked her to a host of other community supports that contribute to stability and independence. Funding is provided under New York State’s Homeless Housing & Assistance Program, which allows CHI to acquire and rehabilitate properties to serve homeless families and individuals. “Six years ago, I couldn’t imagine being where I am today. I can never repay CHI for the help they gave me and my family,” said Ms. Nielsen. When Ms. Nielsen got to CHI, she was homeless, nine months sober, and traveling almost daily by bus to Stony Brook Hospital to care for her premature baby girl, who remained in the NICU for

The Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District along with SEPTA will present its 10th annual Transition Fair for students with disabilities, on January 31st, 2017, from 6 to 9 p.m., at Sanford H. Calhoun High School, 1786 State St., Merrick. This fair is designed to help students with special needs reach their fullest potential by engaging them along with their parents in a workshop style of the transition process. Various organizations and agencies across Long Island will be available to address several topics including
eligibility determination, employment opportunity, supported living and/or self-direction services. All workshops are given by expert representatives who specialize in the field of disability rights. Subjects discussed include determination to special needs trusts for social security benefits, Medicaid and Non-Medicaid services. A question and answer segment will follow at the booths after the workshop presentations. The student workshop will be the high point of the night. This workshop is a way for students to
take part in understanding the transition process by listening to BellmoreMerrick alumni who have already engaged in the prevocational and vocational experiences. Afterward, students can participate in a guided scavenger hunt with opportunity to win prizes. Pizza and refreshments will be provided. Holiday Magic Members of the fourthand fifth-grade student council at Barnum Woods Elementary School in the East Meadow School District collected more than 100 toys for the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve’s Toys for Tots program. Toys for Tots collects new, unwrapped toys every year from October through December to provide holiday gifts to less fortunate children in the
community. From November 30th to December 14th, the student council accepted donations from students, teachers, administrators and other school community members. Council members displayed posters, sang jingles on the morning announcements and visited classrooms throughout the twoweek drive, stressing the importance of giving back

and helping others. On December 19th, Staff Sergeant J.D. Quinton and Sergeants Eliezer Gomez and Carlos Hernandez collected seven boxes of new toys from the school to help local families in Nassau County. Staff Sgt. Quinton thanked the students for their generosity and for helping families this holiday season.

They also incorporated a poem titled “Mr. Snow Rap,” simulated a snow fight and accompanied their tunes with instrumental music. of “Sleigh Ride,” “African Noel,” “Dance the Hora” and “Happy New Year, Everyone.” The concert commenced with a specially written song by Ms. Davis titled “Time for Acceptance and Love.” Typical of Winthrop Avenue’s concerts, select students were also given the opportunity to play their recorders and to accompany the music with a variety of instruments to add glitter and pizazz to an already festive performance.

Fine Dining East Broadway Elementary School in Levittown held its Fine Dining experience, an annual event in which the cafeteria is “dressed up” with tablecloths and holiday decorations, and the children come to school in their finest
clothes. Music teacher Barry Titone also played holiday tunes on his saxophone as the students and teachers talked about their plans for the holiday break. Principal Jeanmarie Wink explained that the “formal” event instills
etiquette and encourages social development in young children. “With so many children celebrating different holidays, I wanted to host a festive tradition that could be celebrated by all,” Wink stated.

The Wellington C. Mepham High School football team in the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District was recently recognized as the 2016 Community Service Award winner for Nassau County. The award was given out at the December 7th Nassau County High School Football Coaches Association Gridiron Banquet and recognizes a team that has given back to the community through community service
projects and fundraisers. “This past season the team continued its tradition of raising money for breast cancer awareness,” said coach and Mepham Athletic Director Anthony Cracco. “The parents and players sold T-shirts and collected donations and made a $1,000 contribution to the American Cancer Society’s Making Strides for Breast Cancer program.” Additionally, the team spent a Sunday cleaning up Newbridge Road Park
as a way to thank the local community for their support of their program. “This project was especially meaningful as many of the players began their playing careers on the fields at Newbridge,” Cracco said. “I am extremely proud of our football families’ efforts to give back to their community. The players are a great group of young men and are extremely deserving of this honor.”

Mini-Mechanics First-graders at Levy Lakeside School in the Merrick School District recently assembled motorized cars with Legos during a lesson from members of Bricks for Kidz, an educational organization devoted to teaching the fundamentals of STEM – science,
technology, engineering and math – in an engaging and creative way. Divided into teams, the young students applied their reading, collaborative and cognitive skills to follow step-by-step instructions to build the cars. Once the construction
was complete, the students tested the speed of their vehicles by driving them across the classroom floor and their desks. The activity served as a memorable lesson in teamwork and problemsolving while enforcing principles of STEM.

When she crosses paths with Tiffany, a young girl looking for answers after her sister died in the Girl in the Cornfield (released in early 2016), Adelaide learns just how much they have in common.
women and Tiffany face the horrors of an evil entity, known as the Woman in White. “Prior to the release of the original film, I was taken aback by the response and attention it received,” Callaway said. “The original trailer was viewed over 100,000 times and all sorts of movie websites covered it. This is not bad for a project that cost me less than $10,000 out of pocket.” The film’s successful response and a fan asking Callaway about a potential sequel sparked his interest in doing another one. Callaway explained that the world the original movie takes place in wasn’t fleshed out as fully as it could’ve been, and there was a lot to work with. “So, I started playing around with ideas and eventually wrote a screenplay that I was extremely proud of,” he said. “Thanks to having a terrific cast on hand and a little more money to work with, I’m confident this movie is an overall better and scarier installment.” Lulic, a recent Rutgers University graduate, explained that she has
always wanted to act in film and television. She’s so far lived her dream with playing the 1920s Bobbed Hair Bandit on Mysteries at the Museum for the Travel Channel earlier this year; Marion Almond in the play, The Heiress, for which she was nominated best actress; Tina Potts for a short film, Rock This! (which was selected by the Cannes Film Festival and Campus MovieFest in 2015); and Alexis for a book trailer/commercial of The Merciless in 2014. “I don’t remember a time when I didn’t see myself doing that,” she said. “I grew up with a family who always had the TV on so it became a second thought of mine that one day I would end up in the movies and TV shows we watched.” Playing the role Adelaide had its advantages. Lulic admired her character’s strength. “Adelaide remains strong for her sister and her new foster sister that she barely knows and doesn’t let her own fear get the best of her,” she said. “She’s also not afraid to stand up to her dad and question what people tell her; Adelaide’s not the
kind of person that will let you off the hook.” Lulic laughingly stated that when filming in the cornfield she needed to draw from her own courage. “As if being in an abandoned cornfield at night wasn’t creepy enough, at one point Ryan [Callaway] and I could have sworn we heard a little girl singing right as it neared 3 a.m. (the ‘witching hour’),” she said. “But after we both heard it, we quickly pretended like it didn’t happen so we could get the shots we needed— anything to get out of that cornfield as quickly as possible!” Moving forward, Lulic has a couple of “fun” projects coming up. She’s been cast as the Wicked Witch for a fan-fiction short film based off Gregory Maguire’s book, Wicked, and she’s also in the early stages of writing and producing her own science fiction short film. “Because that’s a project I’m writing myself, I kind of get to create my dream character, so it’s been a lot of fun,” she said. “I’m really excited to get that project rolling in 2017.”

Michelle Lulic, 23, a best actress nominee for BroadwayWorld’s 2015 Long Island Theater Awards, has a lead role in the soon-to-be-released horror film, Where Demons Dwell: Girl in the Cornfield 2. The film will be released on Amazon Prime in January on Friday the 13th, after its premiere screening at 10 a.m. January 7th at Bow Tie Cinemas in Red Bank, N.J. Lulic, a 2011 Mepham High School graduate (Bellmore), plays Adelaide
“Michelle was a pleasure to work with, and she’s a terrific actress with a lot of range—which was needed for everything Adelaide goes through in the movie,” Producer and Director Ryan Callaway of New Jersey said, adding that Lulic joined the cast late in production when she was tapped to replace another actress due to scheduling conflicts. She came in and shot for roughly 3-and-a-half weeks straight to make up for the lost time. “Where Demons Dwell was my first feature film, and I couldn’t have asked for a better project to work on,” Lulic said. “I got to do a ton of the stereotypical ‘horror film’ scenes, but that didn’t distract from the heart of the overall story. I had quite a few ‘pinch me’ moments while on set.” Where Demons Dwell: Girl in the Cornfield 2 is Callaway’s his fourth fulllength movie to date. He released the first film, The Girl in the Cornfield, on May 13th, 2016, followed by an Amazon Prime release on October 10th. More than 400,000 minutes were watched on Amazon Prime in October alone. Holiday Delights Bowls of candy, marshmallows and other treats were spread out on tables in kindergarten classrooms at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School in the North Bellmore School District as students created custom
gingerbread houses. Starting out with small milk cartons, the children covered them in frosting, added graham crackers for the walls, and then decorated their houses with an assortment of candy. They took home
their completed creations to serve as holiday centerpieces. The project was part of the study on the letters G and H. Teachers read “The Gingerbread Boy” before students created their tasty masterpieces.
Arctic Videoconference Salk Middle School students in Paul Zaratin’s and Douglas Neu’s science research classes participated in a videoconference with Jean Pennycock, who spoke from Antarctica about her research on penguins. Sponsored by the Denver Museum of Science and Nature, the Scientist in Action: Living With
Penguins in Antarctica Program gave students a real-world perspective on careers in research, as well as further knowledge about the penguin habitat and a part of the world that people rarely visit. In addition, Salk Middle school was one of only a handful of schools across the nation given the opportunity to ask Pennycock questions
about her research. In addition to witnessing penguin behavior during a live feed, the students learned more about a researcher’s view on global learning, what it is like to live on Antarctica while performing research, and how Pennycock plans on tracking the penguins during the winter.

Adopt-a-Battalion Students enrolled in the Senior Participation in Government and AP Government classes at John F. Kennedy High School in the BellmoreMerrick Central High School helped raise money and collected donations for active service members stationed overseas. At the suggestion of AP Government teacher Kara McManus, Kennedy students selected the volunteer-based Adopta-Battalion organization to provide packages containing toiletries,
candy, and socks for troops. Since October, AP government students hosted numerous events as part of their service learning project and the fundraising efforts benefited Adopt-aBattalion. “Our students organized several fundraisers including bake sales, selling yellow ribbons for Veterans Day,” said District Social Studies Chairperson Karen McGuinness. “Students also collected loose change and solicited donations of toiletries from

A pair of Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) piano students, Luke Gentil (Half Hollow Hills CSD) and Jeremy Kaplan (BellmoreMerrick CHSD), were featured performers at the Grace Music School’s official kickoff event for their Island-wide piano competition. The winner of the competition will earn $1,000 and will perform at Carnegie Hall. At the event, Mr. Gentil performed two of his original compositions, “Billade No. 2” and “Gentil Invention No. 1.” Mr. Kaplan performed a medley of Billy Joel songs, beginning with “Waltz No. 2” from Fantasies & Delusions. He also performed the jazz standard “Blue Rondo a la Turk” by Dave Brubeck. “What more fitting way to celebrate Long Island’s aspiring pianists then having a piano competition,” said Grace Heaphy, director of the Grace Music School. “It gives them a chance to perform at one of the greatest music venues in the world.” The competition will be held in April of 2017 at the worldfamous Steinway and Sons piano showroom in New York City. The winner will perform at Carnegie Hall in June. “We could not be more proud of these two flourishing musicians,” said LIHSA Principal Jack Lenson. “They are an excellent representation of the gifted youngsters that constitute our school. and Dr. David Kommor took turns presenting relevant information about the scope and sequence of the ASR program. “Opportunities for research and college credit from SUNY Albany’s UHS program were also explained to the group of approximately 80 parents and students,” said District

Kindness is King Students learned about appreciation and gratitude, and demonstrated that by making cards for teachers and staff. They also wrote “get well” messages to the daughter of a staff member battling cancer, as well as an ill child in another town. In their classes, students learned about both small ways to show kindness, such as sharing and being polite, and larger ways, like helping keep the Earth clean and giving to charity. Teachers had daily acts of kindness they asked their students to perform. Mrs. Griffin had each
student secretly “spy” on a classmate for a week to note all the kind things that person did, then share one of those acts of kindness with the entire class. She noted that teaching students to be kind and respectful is just as important as reading, writing and math. “We thought this was a really great time to teach the children about kindness,” said Mrs. Purificato. “What’s important is giving to others and not just getting.”
The Girl Scouts of Nassau County (GSNC) Chorus recently performed with Greater Nassau Chorus (GNC) and Mineola High School Choirs as part of the GNC’s holiday concert at the school. The Girl Scouts attended a GNC rehearsal to learn from the experienced women before working together to prepare the Simon and Garfunkle song, “The 59th Street Bridge” for their performance. “We are so glad to have the opportunity to expose our girls to the expertise and leadership of these famed females’ artistic passion,” said Chief Executive Officer Donna Ceravolo. “GNC has helped
