New Year, New Me Mindset.

If you’re reading this right now, think about all you have to be grateful for: eyes to see, education to read, knowledge to interpret, the gift of free time to do what you please (which happens to be reading this article, thank you!) and the blessing of seeing another year begin.
giving your recyclables to a homeless individual so they can get the money for them instead of you getting the money for yourself or simply cooking a meal for a needy friend every so often. Think of how much more we can do for those around us and even those around the world!
It’s not uncommon this time of year to hear people speak of New Year’s Resolutions and what way they want to “better themselves” in the New Year. Society has almost groomed us to believe we need to partake in coming up with a way to improve ourselves with the start of each New Year.
One thing I have felt called to do in my life is to help those in need in Africa. I don’t know why specifically there, but it’s been a calling I have had for most of my life. I’ve sponsored a child in Kenya, got involved with another organization that helps people in need in Africa, and since I specifically feel called to help those in Africa suffering from a lack of clean water, I recently decided to start a fundraiser through an organization to raise money to bless people in need in subSaharan Africa with fresh water.
My question is: why do we feel the need to start each New Year thinking about ourselves? Don’t we do enough of that already? Just think, on an average day we pick out an outfit for ourselves in the morning, eat meals throughout the day that we enjoy, partake in habits we created, work a job that we applied for and connect with friends that we chose. The last thing we need to do is to start each New Year by thinking of more ways to make life about us.
Bellmore Holiday Toy Donations Hundreds of toys collected by students in the North Bellmore School District benefited children more than 1,000 miles away who have been impacted by hurricanes. More than a decade ago, the Students Against Destructive Decisions club at John Dinkelmeyer Elementary School partnered with the Stephen Siller Tunnels
to Tower Foundation to provide toys during the holiday season in areas affected by Hurricane Katrina. In subsequent years, the school collected for children all over the country, including on Long Island after Hurricane Sandy in 2012. On December 4th, retired firefighters representing the Siller Foundation pulled up to
Dinkelmeyer in a large truck, destined for Panama City, Florida. Students placed the toy donations in large bags which were then loaded onto the truck. They joined the firefighters in singing a few holiday songs together. Toys were also collected from Park Avenue and Saw Mill Road elementary schools.
I hope we can all see the beauty in helping others. It just so happens that when we lose ourselves in serving others, we actually find ourselves in the midst of it. The more we give, the more we receive! I believe the biggest misunderstanding that anyone can have is to believe their life is theirs to do whatever they please with. Living with that type of mindset can lead you into an egotistical lifestyle and it easily distracts you from what your calling really is, because we all are here for a purpose. I do believe we should be mindful of our habits, our lifestyles and ourselves, always bettering ourselves to make the world a better place. However, I believe we should get in a habit of thinking more of others and less of ourselves. This New Year, instead of thinking of how much weight you want to lose, how many countries you want to travel to, what job promotion you want to achieve or what you want others to think of you, try changing your mindset to think of how you can help others. Maybe your New Year’s Resolution can be to volunteer once a week at a local non-profit, donate all your unwanted clothes instead of throwing them in the garbage,
After plenty of research, the organization I started my fundraiser through is The Water Project. The Water Project is a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization that unlocks human potential by providing reliable water projects to communities in sub-Saharan Africa, which suffer from a lack of access to clean water and proper sanitation. My fundraising goal is $12,000, which if reached will fully fund a water project in a needy community in sub-Saharan Africa, allowing them to receive a fresh water well and learn proper sanitation skills. If I do not reach my fundraising goal, the organization will take all that I raised and put it towards helping as many people as possible in subSaharan Africa receive fresh water. I simply cannot imagine lacking access to clean water and it breaks my heart knowing that is a reality for some people. The Book Fairies The students of Merrick Avenue Middle School recently collected more than 2,000 children’s books for The Book Fairies, a nonprofit organization based in Freeport. The Book Fairies collects new and gently used books and then redistributes them to schools in need – all of which are located on VOLLEYBALL CHAMPS - Hempstead Town Supervisor Laura Gillen, Senior Long Island and the five Councilwoman Dorothy Goosby, Councilwoman Erin King Sweeney and Councilman boroughs. Drakos agreed. “It was incredible; some students brought in suitcases full of books,” she added. Students helped collect and organize the donations
into six categories: board books, picture books, elementary chapter book, elementary nonfiction, young adult middle school and young adult high school. “Students enjoyed competing with other classes to see which class could donate the most books,” said Molinaro, a seventh-grade English teacher.

Meeting Sponsored Veterans After months of fundraising for the veteran organization Building Homes for Heroes, seniors involved in the Wellington C. Mepham High School’s service learning project were able to meet the individual at the receiving end. Retired U.S. Navy Petty Officer Ryan Shannon was injured while serving in the military and later eligible to receive a mortgage-free home in Illinois. Through various fundraising events and the installation of a Flag Field of Honor, the Mepham High School community has raised more than $20,000 for the nonprofit organization benefiting veterans. “The kids have embraced this project from the beginning and were so excited to meet Ryan,” explained social studies teacher Kerry Dennis. After turning the key on
his family’s new home in late November, Shannon traveled to New York to visit with the Mepham community on Dec. 19. “To see this outpouring from people I don’t know, now I do know, is amazing and I can’t thank you all enough,” Shannon said. It was a morning of pomp and circumstance as the Mepham foyer was transformed with patriotic balloon arches and the cafeteria a welcome brigade. The vocal group, MephAcapella, led by music teacher Christina Dimitriou, offered the gift of a capella song. “For the rest of the day Ryan spent the day in our Participation in Government classes, Senior Experience and School and Community Leadership classes meeting with the kids and sharing his story,” Dennis further explained.
Shannon shared a message woven with notes of integrity, courage, resilience and hope. “Today’s experience was so compelling because not only did the students get to ‘put a face with the name’ for their senior service learning project, they were able to understand the impact they have made on Ryan’s life, and to hear his captivating story firsthand,” said Robyn Einbinder, district social studies chairperson. “His message really resonated with the seniors.” As the welcome breakfast came to a close and Shannon was gifted with Pirate gift baskets, gear and even a flag, Mepham Principal Eric Gomez prompted the crowd of seniors, saying “seniors, what do we say; Once a Pirate?” to which they exclaimed, “Always a Pirate.”

A Little Bit Goes A Long Way There is a Tony Robbins phrase that stays with me, which goes as follows: “People tend to overestimate what they can accomplish in a year, and they tend to underestimate what can be accomplished in a decade.” I love that phrase and think of it often. To bring it out to a wider perspective, I interpret it to mean that human nature tends to box us in to thinking that when it comes to meeting a goal or aspiration, we must take an “all or nothing” approach. It simply isn’t true. Another old saying, “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step,” is one of the most brilliant lines ever spoken (it originated from an old Chinese proverb, which was translated into English). I was just speaking with a coworker about the holidays. As we were discussing the copious amounts of food many of us tend to consume during the holiday season and how gym memberships are often initiated in January and not followed through with, I jokingly told her about my “Lazy Girl Workout.”
I explained that during the winter months when it is not as easy to take my long hikes outdoors or to play outdoor sports, I do tend to be more sedentary. I also have a larger appetite in the winter. However, I never pass up a moment to squeeze in some form of physical activity, even when I am doing something like watching a movie or catching up on Netflix. I call it my “Lazy Girl Workout.” Sounds funny, right? Most days, as I am laying on the floor or in bed doing my “Netflix and Chill” thing, I take the opportunity to do my leg lifts in repetition for about half an hour. It gives my legs a nice, low impact workout. I will also do my abdominal isometrics and some arm circles while I’m at it. No, it’s not quite as robust as 45 minutes on a treadmill or an hour of lifting weights, but if you compare doing nothing to doing something, I am ahead of the game. Human beings will often set up losing propositions for themselves by saying, “Well, if I can’t do the very best thing, then
why bother at all?” They fail to see the immense value in a whole lot of consistent small steps. Last year, I was having a moment when I was feeling very overwhelmed. There were a lot of challenges going on in my life in a rather short period of time. My father said to me, “By the yard, life is hard. Inch by inch, life’s a cinch.” As simple as it sounds, that phrase absolutely changed my perspective. If you can only manage your life and your goals inch by inch right now, then do that. If you can manage your life by the yard, then do that. Either way, do something. To go back to my original conversation with my coworker, before long, I had her brainstorming the small exercises she could do while in her office (push-ups against the file cabinet) or in her car (hello glute and ab isometrics!). Whatever your goal, be it fitness, career, family and so forth; do consistent small things each day, each week, each month, each year. One day you will look behind you and be amazed at how far you’ve come.

Winter Wonderland Exercise Mandalay and Wantagh elementary school students hopped through the snow, participated in a snowball fight and enjoyed a sled pull during the schools’ newest physical education unit called Winter Wonderland. Under the direction of
teacher Robyn Pastuch, the gymnasium was set up in a series of six winter-themed stations to assist students with coordination, balance, range of motion skills and teamwork. Holiday-themed signs and snowflakes, designed by the
PTA and students, lined the walls while music set the tone for a fun-filled hour of exercise. All-American Surprise East Meadow High School junior Stephanie Sparkowski received an unexpected surprise while in attendance at a varsity boys basketball game on Dec. 10. It was announced that she had been named a girls soccer Allstate AllAmerican. Allstate and MaxPreps collaborated to select 40 girls from across the country that will compete in the inaugural Allstate All-America Cup
in Orlando, Florida this summer. Stephanie’s selection was announced at the game’s halftime via a projector, with a video message from two-time FIFA Women’s World Cup champion and Olympic gold medalist Julie Foudy. Foudy is one of the two female coaches for this summer’s tournament. The girls varsity soccer team was crowned county co-champion this fall with a 12-3-3 record.
Stephanie earned AllCounty and News 12 Varsity All-Long Island Honorable Mention accolades after compiling 91 saves for the season. “Congratulations to our very own Stephanie Sparkowski for being selected as an Allstate AllAmerican,” said district Director of Physical Education, Health and Athletics Kristi Detor. “We are very proud of her!”
Students Stuff Holiday Baskets Students from the Bellmore-Merrick Central High School District recently volunteered at the Brookside School to assist the Bellmore Kiwanis Club with a holiday mission. After a donation drive within the district, student volunteers gathered on December 12, 13 and 16 to organize food to help the Kiwanis Club create
baskets for families in need. “The families receive food and presents for the children,” explained Catrina Christensen, school counselor and coordinator of the Twilight Program at the Meadowbrook Alternative Program. “There were probably 2 to 3,000 items donated.”
The Kiwanis then donates leftover food to the district’s food pantry, the Community Cupboard. “By performing these acts, students learn the importance of helping families in need, the importance of community and collaboration,” added Christensen.

Letters for a Cause Students, faculty and staff at East Meadow High School recently supported the Make-A-Wish Foundation through the Macy’s Believe Campaign by writing holiday wish letters. With the help of many clubs, more than $6,000 was raised.
Each letter written to Santa received a $2 donation to Make-A-Wish through the sponsorship of Macy’s. The donations help grant life-changing wishes across America. This worthwhile cause helps children fight critical illnesses while giving them
an opportunity to have a wish come true. The district commends East Meadow High School for helping to make wishes come true this holiday season.

By Ika Campbell of Miller Place, New York Ika Campbell of Miller Place, New York is a recipe buff with a special affinty for what our nation’s presidents ate throughout the decades. In fact, one of the prized possessions in her kitchen is a cookbook filled with past presidents’ favorite family recipes. Ika particularly loves whipping up Chewy Macaroons for her family during holidays and special occasions. She shares that this macaroon recipe was a family favorite of President Lyndon B. Johnson, and the Johnson family, during their time in the White House.
What You Will Need:
2 liquid egg whites 1 pinch of salt 1 half cup of sugar 1 cup sweetened, shredded coconut 1 half teaspoon of vanilla extract
Preparation:
Pre-heat oven to 325 degrees Beat egg whites with salt until stiff Gradually beat in sugar until stiff (shiny peaks will form) Slowly fold in coconut and vanilla
Baking:
Drop by the teaspoonful onto a lightly greased baking sheet Leave about 2 inches in between each cookie on the sheet Bake on the middle shelf for 20 minutes or until golden brown
Serving:

MacArthur H.S.’s “Hello Dolly” The auditorium of General Douglas MacArthur High School was transformed into 1890 New York City as the Generals opened the curtains to its musical production of “Hello, Dolly!” Senior citizens in the Levittown community enjoyed a matinee performance on
December 5th, while the public experienced the show in the evenings from December 6-8. The musical was a collaborative effort. With the guidance of director Lisa Levenberg, producers Carisa Wellenreuther and Mallory Oboikovitz, pit orchestra director Iris Winter, assistant director
Helen Papayannakos, choreographers Ryan Nolin and Jennifer Malin and lighting and sound advisers Chris Brown and Lisa Cristallo, the talented cast, crew and musicians shined. The classic musical spotlights widow and matchmaker Dolly Levi (Isabella Vasile-
Cozzo). Among her clients is wealthy Horace Vandergelder (Lyle Greene). While helping him find a woman to marry, she secretly schemes to have him marry her. Dolly’s scheming also involves Horace’s employees, Barnaby Tucker (Kenny Galo) and Cornelius Hackl (Jake Schauder) as well
as New York hatmaker Irene Molloy (Nikolette Dempsey), as she tries to cover up her own secret romantic designs. Members of the pit orchestra provided the music throughout the production while the production, stage, lighting and sound crews made the story come to life. The
cast charmed audience members with their acting, singing and dancing abilities as they performed songs such as “Call on Dolly,” “Put on Your Sunday Clothes,” “Before the Parade Passes By” and “Hello Dolly” in an evening to remember.
