n honor of Earth Day, students at Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District participated in many earthfriendly activities. For the first time, kindergarten students held an Earth Day Fair, with various stations set up to reinforce key environmental causes. At each station, a short book was read, after which kindergartners would complete an activity. Pictured are some of the students who participated in the Fair.

I recently attended a Journalism event last week which reminded me what, in fact, it means to be a “Journalist” – and why it was I pursued a career in this field in the first place. It’s funny how easily it is to lose sight of the basics like that. Go to college, get a degree, find a job… then realize, just like that, eight years have passed by and you haven’t even paused long enough to evaluate the path you’ve taken, where it’s leading – you know, minor life-altering concepts like that. Ironic, isn’t it? But I digress. Back to the event. It is these types of panels and discussions

among Journalism’s elite which reignites that fire – that passion to make a difference with the written word, the spoken word, photography… whatever the specific medium might be. During the course of the evening, the question arose as to what, specifically, qualified someone to be a Journalist. After all, anyone can blog, anyone can utilize social media to share their thoughts and opinions on all things important (or trivial, as the case may be). So where lies the distinction? The joke was made that, “Journalists have the ability to be fired.” This is actually true, to a degree. Those whose opinions are not solicited have no real accountability to the

public. Of course, they should regardless. But in reality, it is the almighty dollar which dictates our purpose in life more than any sense of real responsibility. It’s a shame, as many of my fellow college classmates have long since abandoned the Journalism field for so-called loftier, more lucrative pursuits. But what of the fire? The motivation to make a difference? Not to mention, the four years of schooling at a rather expensive private university…But to each his/her own. For me, all it takes is one evening of stimulating conversation to quell any doubts that this is the field for me. Proud to be a Journalist, always.

I celebrated my 60th Birthday on Friday, April 26th. I walked into the office on that beautiful Friday morning to “60” decorations hanging over my desk, a “60” crown and a “60” necklace, balloons, various gifts, flowers, cards, plants, lottery scratch-offs, donuts and a beautiful birthday cake. The staff of this newspaper is like a “2nd family” to me and I am so very grateful to be an employee of this great paper, which by the way, will also be “60” years old this coming November. As I leave the Fabulous Fifties and enter the Sensational Sixties (another decade of life), I will always have a special memory of this wonderful day and hope to be employed here for many more days and years. 255765N0501

BOCES To Receive Grants Nassau BOCES has been awarded a $50,350 grant as a part of $3.4 million in statewide grants New York Governor Andrew M. Cuomo recently pledged to support early childhood to youth-aged programs in communities in need. The Parent-Child Home Program falls under grant guidelines which are intended to provide funding for children and youth in targeted highrisk neighborhoods. “The grant will fund an expansion of the nationally replicated and evidence-based, ParentChild Home Program, which Nassau BOCES has successfully administered in various districts since the 1970’s. It will afford the organization the ability to expand to include up to 50 more families, including five displaced by Superstorm Sandy. The program

gives low-income and low-literacy families the resources and skills they need to support their young children’s learning and prepare them for successful school entry. “We are thrilled and honored to be chosen as a part of this grant,” said Dr. Thomas Rogers, District Superintendent of Nassau BOCES.” The Parent-Child Home Program stresses the importance of parentchild interaction and aims to bridge the preparation gap for young children approaching school age. The program encourages parents and gives them the skills to interact with their children through verbal interaction, play and interactive experiences which nurture critical early emotional development and problem solving skills.

Really, anything counts as an extracurricular! Fishing, hiking, boating, constructing and drawing all help you as a person, and as an applicant. Even playing the guitar has hidden benefits that any future college would love to see. Most universities or colleges prefer an abundance of extracurricular activities, and some even base 25% of their decision on these items. It is a good idea to get an early start. One would advise freshmen to begin compiling their list of

sports, clubs, volunteer hours and passions now. It is one of those things essential to your success and maximizing the caliber of school you or your child plan on attending. Some of the most favorable activities include Student Council, being the captain of a sports team, club or any other leadership position. Having a plethora of after-school programs can only boost one’s chances, giving a reason to spend one’s time wisely! On top of being good résumé padding, extracurricular activities help portray your passions to a potential school. Is your kid going to college anytime soon? If so, remember, extracurricular activities actually matter!

Scholarship Applications Available For the tenth consecutive year, the Long Island Game Farm is inviting graduating high school seniors to apply for the Stanley and Susan Novak Memorial Scholarship. The time is now to apply for the annual scholarship, which is worth $1,000. Each year, this award is granted to a graduating senior from Long Island who plans to attend a twoyear or higher college or university program, and exemplifies the qualities required to become a pioneer in nature, whether it be in the field of veterinary medicine or environmental science. The application deadline is Friday, May 31st, 2013. Now in its 44th year, the Long Island Game Farm was founded in 1970 by Stanley and Diane Novak and is located in Manorville. It features hundreds of animals on 25 acres of land. Year after year, the park is visited by thousands and enjoyed by all. It has been an educational site for school children to learn about animals and nature for decades. The scholarship was established in 2004 to honor the memories of Stanley John Novak, the Game Farm’s co-founder, and his daughter, Susan Mary Novak. In 1999, Stanley Novak was 66

and had been building the Long Island Game Farm for nearly 30 years. Sadly, he died from a heart attack, leaving his legacy behind. In 2001, his daughter, Susan, who started working at the Game Farm when she was five years old, died from Multiple Myeloma at age 37. Both were passionate about animals and were steadfast in maintaining Long Island’s environment. “I can think of no better way to help preserve the memories of Stanley and Susan. They helped our family pursue its dream of building a park where children can see and interact with animals found in nature. Through this scholarship, we help college students pursue their dreams,” said Diane Novak, Co-Founder and Owner of the Long Island Game Farm. Ann Tracy, the librarian at Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District, was named the first-place winner in the Long Island School Media Association’s Best Practices contest.

Ms. Tracy submitted her third-grade lesson titled Where Dewey Look In The Library, which is a Smart Board lesson that teaches students where to find books in the library using the Dewey

In honor of Earth Day, students at Central Boulevard Elementary School in the Bethpage School District participated in many earthfriendly activities. For the first time, kindergarten

students held an Earth Day fair, with various stations set up to reinforce key environmental causes. At each station, a short book was read, after which kindergartners would complete an activity,

such as writing what they promise to do to help the planet, making art out of newspapers and sorting items into paper, metal and plastic.

Heart Healing Walk The American Heart Association’s 4th Annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, May 19th, on the property of the beautiful Martha Clara Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Riverhead. More than 800 runners are expected. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take

place at 11:30 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants. The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. The event creates a culture of health and physical activity, giving families the opportunity to participate in heart healthy

Outstanding Chapter Leadership It is with great pleasure that Huntington-Oyster Bay Audubon Society announces Stella Miller, HOBAS’ Chapter President, as recipient of the Norman Stotz Award for Outstanding Chapter Leadership. Stella recently received her award for her extraordinary volunteer service at the Spring Audubon New York Council meeting, in March 2013 in Saratoga Springs, NY. Stella joined the HOBAS board in 2006. She books monthly members’ programs with prestigious speakers who have presented programs on local and global conservation and environmental topics. Stella designed and maintains the HOBAS’ website and Facebook page. These forums have helped

to bring public awareness to HOBAS programs as well as some of the initiatives that Stella implemented, such as “Save Our Raptors” and “Cats Belong Indoors.” In addition, she was instrumental in the campaign to preserve Plum Island and created a Facebook page and online petition for the Plum Island Coalition. Stella’s commitment to educating children about the natural world has been demonstrated by her collaborative initiatives and outreach efforts. She has developed regular children’s programs for youngsters ages 3 and above. The Audubon Youth Outreach Committee Stella formed, the first of its kind in the area, was designed to engage teenagers in meaningful community

outreach projects and her “Bringing Teens and Seniors Together” bridges the generation gap through birding and nature-based programs. She has spearheaded the restoration grassland project at Underhill Preserve and coordinates other community volunteer opportunities such as invasive species pulls held at Shu Swamp and Stillwell Woods. Stella is an outstanding leader who is willing to network, collaborate, and share her knowledge, love and passion of the natural world with many. The Town of Oyster Bay is offering a Summer Ice Hockey Instructional Program for ages 3 to 6 (born 2006-2009), according to Town Councilman Joe Muscarella, who announced that the indoor Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center located at 1001 Stewart Avenue in Bethpage, will provide the venue for the highly regarded program. “The Instructional Ice Hockey program, which is open only to Town of Oyster Bay residents, is an outstanding recreational program,” Councilman Muscarella stated. “It provides youngsters ages 3 to 6 with the opportunity to learn skating and hockey skills under the guidance of Town of Oyster Bay ice hockey coaches.” Registration will be held

North Shore-LIJ Health System’s Project Coastal Care has received one of Sustainable Long Island’s “Getting It Done” awards this year for providing free medical care to New Yorkers impacted by Hurricane Sandy. Since the program’s inception last November, Project Coastal Care has treated more than 1,200 people in a mobile medical van that has made regularly scheduled visits to areas affected by the super storm, including Broad Channel in Queens, Staten Island and the Long Island communities of Long Beach and Lindenhurst. The van began treating people in Babylon this month. The North ShoreLIJ Health System received a $350,000 grant from the Robin Hood Relief Fund in February which will enable the van’s medical team to continue treating people through August. The mobile van is staffed with medical professionals, administrative support personnel and a driver.
