Get Vaccinated. Vaccination is the best protection against contracting the flu. Everyone 6 months of age and older should get vaccinated against the flu as soon as the 2012-2013 season vaccine is available in your area. If you do contract the flu, talk to your doctor about antivirals. Antiviral drugs are prescription medicines (pills, liquid or an inhaler) that can be used for prevention or treatment of flu viruses. If you get sick, antiviral drugs can make your illness milder and make you feel better faster. Flu Facts: • The flu is caused by a virus called influenza • Flu is a contagious illness that is spread in droplets made by people when they talk, sneeze or cough. These droplets can then infect another person when they inhale them. • Less commonly, a person might also get flu by touching an object that has the flu virus on it and then touching their own mouth, eyes or nose. • Once infected, you may pass the virus to others even about a day before you begin to have symptoms yourself. • Flu can cause a mild to severe illness and even death especially in the very young or old, pregnant woman or people with other medical illnesses (i.e.: asthma, diabetes) • The best way to prevent the flu is by getting a flu vaccine each year.
Q: What else can I do to prevent getting or spreading the flu? A: Here are some things you can do: • Get vaccinated! Ask your friends to get vaccinated. • Cover coughs and sneezes with a tissue and then throw the tissue in the garbage. • Stay away from people who are sick. • Wash your hands often with soap and water or use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer. • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth. • If someone in the house is sick, if possible, try to keep them in a separate area. • Keep surfaces like tables, sinks, counters and toys clean by wiping them down with a household disinfectant (follow instructions on the label).
Q: If I am concerned that vaccines cause autism, what is the harm of with holding vaccines? A: Autism is also common in countries where there are no vaccines. Your child may develop severe illness which is easily vaccine - preventable. Step Out Walk Winthrop-University Hospital will participate in the ADA’s Step Out Walk To Stop Diabetes on Sunday, September 30th, at 10 a.m. at Jones Beach State Park. This noncompetitive, family and team-friendly event is aimed at bringing together members of the community to raise funds for diabetes research, education and advocacy. According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), nearly 26 million children and adults in the United States have diabetes – a group of diseases marked by high levels of blood glucose resulting from defects in insulin production, insulin action, or both. What’s more, an estimated 79 million U.S. adults have prediabetes, a condition that occurs when blood glucose levels are higher than normal
(100 to 125 mg/dl after fasting for at least eight hours) but are not high enough to be classified as having type 2 diabetes. A person who is not treated for pre-diabetes may soon develop type 2 diabetes and is also at increased risk for heart disease and stroke. Stop Diabetes is the movement to end the devastating toll that diabetes takes on millions of individuals and families across the nation. “Winthrop is proud to support the American Diabetes Association in its efforts to raise awareness, promote healthy living, and raise money to fund educational outreach, advocacy efforts, and critical research that will ultimately put an end to diabetes once and for all,” said J. On The Road By: Jamie Lynn Ryan Most of us have probably experienced some sort of adversity in our lives, whether of the small, petty variety or the large, lifechanging type. Overall, though, it is how we choose to deal with it that ultimately defines us. If, by taking the high road, we can somehow learn from it while not losing our sense of self in the process, well then, that’s really all we can hope to accomplish. Someone recently pointed out to me that it’s often the star players who are frequently booed while on the road. Why? Because, despite the perceived animosity, there
exists a degree of grudging respect, perhaps even jealousy that the player isn’t part of their own home team. Well, if that’s the case, then I have to believe criticism is the sincerest form of flattery. Otherwise, why would someone take the time and effort to express such negativity, if not for the sheer fact that they are anything but indifferent? Rather, they must be quite invested. Believe me, I will never truly understand those who seem to make their living by spewing hurtful opinions toward others. Perhaps it makes them feel better about themselves; perhaps they are not
equipped to put their words into something more constructive. Either way, I believe it is a combination of arrogance and ignorance which motivates such behavior. But so be it. Those who live their lives to bring others down will continue to do so. Those who strive to make a difference in the lives of others will continue their quest to do so. In the end, all that matters is that a difference was made. If that means wearing that road uniform with pride in the face of adversity, then so be it. Being on the team sure beats being on the outside looking in, doesn’t it?

Before I turn this column over to Dori Scofield, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter Superviser, I’m going to request that our Readers respond as quickly and as generously as they can. It’s going to take all of us to pitch in and help to heal these poor innocent souls. The 23 were used by their human owners in horrific and inhumane ways. Some were used as living “bait” to train the fighting dogs, their teeth filed down or their mouths strapped shut, unmercifly bitten and mauled. Their faces and bodies bare the visable scars; their hearts the invisible aching with longing for the love and homes they would never know. Others were used as breeders, living in small filthy cages - no human contact, no grassy fields to run in, no sweet fresh air or warm human touch. They bore litters of puppies sold to continue the cycle of cruelty. And then there are the fighting dogs, beaten and forced to act against their own sweet natures, prodded into tearing and killing. They were killed and discarded as garbage if they refused to fight. Readers, our combined communities of Nassau and Suffolk Counties need to pull together and make sure each and every one of these dogs has a “happily ever after.” There was evil living amoung us and it will take the good in all of us to make things right. Please read on for a glimpse of what Dori saw on the raid that saved 23 lives... “On September 9th, the Brookhaven Animal Shelter, along with the Suffolk County SPCA and Suffolk County Police Department,
confiscated 23 Pit Bulls from a deplorable home in Shirley, NY. Many of the dogs were stacked in rusted cages in a dark, very hot garage. All were living in their own feces and urine. Others were locked up in various rooms of the house with little or no ventilation, and the remainder lived outside in makeshift kennels. The stench could only be tolerated by a seasoned rescuer. There are few words to describe the expression in the eyes that stared back at us, unsure if we were friend or foe. After five hours of examining and removing the dogs, they were all brought back to The Brookhaven Animal Shelter to begin a new chapter in their lives. I’m sure many readers will cheer for their safety but please understand, they are but another 23 dogs added to the already overcrowded shelter. These dogs need homes desperately. Some are young, some are old, some are more beat up and scarred than others. But one thing is true... all are yearning for the love, companionship and a warm, cozy environment only a loving home can provide. Yes, we need money toward their medical care, blankets to keep them feeling secure, food to nourish their bodies, but more than anything, homes to nourish their souls. Most of the dogs are petite and all are sweet and submissive. I am asking everyone on Long Island to do something, one thing - small or large - for these dogs. Whether you can donate $1 toward the Help the Animals Fund or adopt one of these orphans, please do something. We are the voice of the voiceless... be a voice, change a life forever.”

School is back in session at Nassau County Community College (NCC), and Nassau InterCounty Express (NICE) bus service has reinstituted its school year service to accommodate the more than 3,100 students and employees who ride the buses to the college’s Garden City Campus. The 16x express bus offers non-stop service from the Hempstead Transit Center to NCC, and the n43 route is extended from Roosevelt Field to NCC during the school year. This fall also marks the launch of NICE Bus’s Brand Ambassador Program, which utilizes student “ambassadors” to introduce and assist their fellow students with the particulars of NICE bus service, from stops to routes to schedules. “Bus service is particularly meaningful to

With requests for food assistance at an all-time high on Long Island, food pantries and soup kitchen are not only struggling to keep up with increased demand, but many are in need of suitable equipment to properly store perishable and frozen foods. Thanks to a $25,000 grant by the Long Island Community Foundation made to Island Harvest, Long Island’s largest hunger relief organization, much needed help is on the way. The grant was used to purchase 14 refrigerators, 12 freezers, six shelving units and 26 coolers for 45 of Island Harvest’s member agencies that serve over 10,000 people - from the very youngest to our senior most citizens every month. Island Harvest’s agency clients will benefit from consistent provision of quality fresh, perishable, and frozen products, while giving them a wider choice of food and healthier options, such as fresh fruit and vegetables, meat, poultry and dairy products. One beneficiary agency, Copiague-based Circle of Love Ministry, serves over 1,200 people each month. Additional freezer and refrigeration capacity will allow the nondenominational organization be able to store more food and, consequently, give more to people who need food assistance. Other recipient agencies include the Salvation Army and KoLoKi in Freeport. Much of the equipment replaces outdated, inefficient freezers and refrigerators giving agencies the added benefit of realizing cost and energy savings by using more energy-efficient models. Coolers were distributed to member agencies that collect food at Island Harvest’s central distributions enabling them to safely transport fresh, perishable and frozen product to their facilities. Funding for the LICF grant was made possible, in part, by the Greentree Foundation Fund and the Col. William Smith Fund. Since 1978 LICF has been making grants to improve our region and guide donors with their philanthropic endeavors. More than $130 million has been granted from hundreds of funds established by individuals, families, and businesses. Shelter Awarded Grant The Town of Hempstead is proud to announce that its Animal Shelter in Wantagh has received a $55,000 grant from PetSmart Charities to help fund the town’s TrapNeuter-Release (TNR) program for feral cats. This grant will allow shelter to expand its spay/neuter operations in the Town of Hempstead, helping to mitigate the overpopulation of stray cats. “We are so grateful to PetSmart Charities for this $55,000 grant to help run our TNR Program and further our goal of reducing the feral cat population,” said Shelter Director Cynthia Iacopella. “These funds will allow us to continue providing free spay/neuter surgeries and rabies vaccinations for feral cats
in the Town of Hempstead.” The grant awarded by PetSmart Charities – a not-for-profit organization that funds spay/neuter efforts nationwide – allocates $50,000 for spay/neuter procedures and $5,000 for rabies vaccinations, giving the town additional resources to control the spread of diseases and the overall population of feral cats. Through the town’s TNR program, residents can contact the Animal Shelter about a feral cat issue in their community. Shelter workers will come to the area and trap cats, transport them to the shelter for spay/neuter surgeries and provide temporary post-operation care. The TNR program is a free service offered to the public to mitigate the
overpopulation of feral cats (no pets) in Hempstead Town. Since its inception in 2010, the town’s TNR program has been a huge success, with the Animal Shelter spaying/neutering over 2,600 feral cats throughout the township. In fact, the program has been so successful that the town has enlisted the help of the public in trapping and transporting feral cats to the shelter for surgeries. Training workshops are ongoing; the next seminar is scheduled for Saturday, October 13th. New Beginnings Prior to the official opening of the 2012-2013 school year, middle and high school students in the Levittown Public School District attended orientations and open houses to prepare for their first day. At Jonas Salk Middle School, junior leaders greeted the sixth-grade students, who attended a mandatory assembly with Principal John Zampaglione. After the school’s staff discussed rules and regulations, the sixth-graders participated in a contest to see who could open their lockers the fastest. They were also given a tour of the school based on a mock schedule and received a gift bag. Meanwhile, at Wisdom
Lane Middle School, incoming sixth-graders watched a PowerPoint presentation that outlined important information about the school. They also received a building tour and picked up their school supplies. Wisdom Lane Principal John Avena told the students, “Work hard, be responsible and be respectful and you will have three wonderful middle school years. Most importantly, you must learn how to advocate for yourself.” Incoming ninth-grade students at Division Avenue and MacArthur high schools were welcomed by Principals Dr. Francesco Ianni and Kathleen Valentino during
assemblies that briefed the students on the schools’ rules and codes of conduct, introduced the schools’ guidance counselors and administrators, and gave an overview of expectations. Principals Ianni and Valentino also encouraged the students to become involved in school activities and sports, come to school prepared to work and start to take control of their academic achievements. “Find your own niche,” Dr. Ianni told the ninthgraders. “There is something for everybody. We want to make this school a home and a family.”

As they disembarked from the familiar bright yellow buses, Levittown Public School students greeted their friends and teachers on September 6th, the official start of the 2012-2013 school year. Toting backpacks filled with school supplies, the students were both excited and eager to start learning and quickly settled down to their classroom
routines. Superintendent of Schools Dr. James J. Grossane reported that the district’s opening was both smooth and productive and that everyone expressed excitement about returning to school. “The teachers met their students with warm smiles and enthusiasm and instruction began

SAFETY TOWN - Bear and Webelos I Scouts from Pack 239 in Seaford visited Safety Town in Eisenhower Park over the summer. The scouts learned about safety on our roads for pedestrians and motorists. Pine Hollow Country Club member and former NY Jet and Super Bowl Champion John Schmitt, who is also a longtime Island Harvest supporter, had the honor of presenting Randi Shubin Dresner, President and CEO of Island Harvest, with the gift. The funds will help Island Harvest provide much needed supplemental food support for nearly 300,000 Long Islanders who face the risk of going hungry every day.

GOING FOR THE GOLD - In support of the Doherty Enterprises Inc.’s WOW a Friend Foundation, which raises money through voluntary contributions by its employees, 400 Applebee’s and Panera Bread restaurant staff from Long Island and New Jersey descended on the Calhoun High School gymnasium for a showdown of Olympic proportions. Fifty-one teams faced off in a volleyball tournament that helped raise more than $5,700 - funds that will be earmarked to help fellow employees hit by financial hardship due to a natural disaster, illness or other loss.
