K-9 Officer Brings Smiles And Learning To Northeast Elementary School
Students at Northeast Elementary School in Amityville recently experienced a tail-wagging good time as they welcomed a very special guest from the Suffolk County Police Department: K-9 Officer Hamilton and his handler, Officer George Politis.
Pre-K and kindergarten students eagerly lined the hallways, sitting side by side in anticipation of meeting the friendly and highly trained K-9. One by one, students had the opportunity to greet K-9 Officer Hamilton, creating memorable moments filled with excitement, curiosity, and plenty of smiles.
In addition to the meetand-greet, students learned about the important role K-9 officers play in keeping communities safe. Officer Politis shared insights into Hamilton’s training and daily responsibilities, helping students better understand how police dogs assist officers in their work. The visit provided not only a fun and engaging experience, but also an educational opportunity that brought classroom learning to life in a meaningful way.
Copiague Awarded Islanders Grant To Further STEM Education
Copiague School District is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $10,000 grant through the PowerPlay for Education program, presented by the New York Islanders. The grant is designed to support the needs of deserving schools and will be used to further enhance STEM opportunities for students.
Copiague Middle School technology teacher Mr. DiGiorgio, with the support of Copiague Middle School science chair Dr. Leccese, developed and submitted a proposal outlining how the
funding would benefit the school’s newly renovated STEM lab. The proposal emphasized the acquisition of additional 3D printers, providing students with increased access to handson, innovative learning experiences that foster creativity, problem solving and real-world application of STEM concepts.
In a special ceremony held during the Islanders’ final regular season game, Mr. DiGiorgio, Dr. Leccese, Copiague Middle School Assistant Principal Mr. Porcellini and
Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Altruda, representing the Copiague School District, accepted the $10,000 award. The presentation was made by Islanders owner Jon Ledecky. The district looks forward to continuing its partnership with the New York Islanders and is eager to showcase how this investment will positively impact students and their educational experiences for years to come.
The Amityville School District extends its sincere thanks to the SCPD for their continued service and for taking the time to connect with students at Northeast.

Legislator Renna Highlights Suffolk 250 Commemorative Stamp Program
As celebrations continue commemorating the 250th anniversary of the signing of the Declaration of Independence, Suffolk County has created a passport book Committee to help residents and visitors alike explore Long Island’s rich Revolutionary War heritage one site, one stamp, and one story at a time!
Suffolk County Legislator Richard “RJ” Renna recently had the opportunity to join the Village of Lindenhurst, Lindenhurst Historical Society, and the Village of Babylon Historical & Preservation Society to highlight their role in telling our local story, and the role that Long Island played in the Revolution.
First in the tour of local sites was the Lindenhurst Old Village Hall Museum, where Legislator Renna had the
privilege of getting a tour from Village of Lindenhurst Museum Director Marianne Guglieri and Village Historian Anna Jaeger. After the tour, Legislator Renna received his first stamp in his special 250th Passport Book!
Of all the tremendous displays in the Museum, special emphasis is being made to highlight the Ketcham Homestead, built around 1780 and believed to be the first home built in what is now known as Lindenhurst! The home was first inhabited by Revolutionary War veteran Jesse Ketcham and his wife, Temperance Ketcham.
From Lindenhurst, Legislator Renna took the short ride over to Babylon Village to meet with Wayne Horsely, Babylon Village Historian, and Judy Skillen, President of the Babylon Village Historical and Preservation Society
for a tour of the Babylon Village Museum! At the museum, Legislator Renna collected his second stamp before heading to the Nathaniel Conklin House, where he met with Director Karen Petz for his third stamp of the day! Edmund W. Miles Middle School in Amityville proudly recently hosted its annual National Junior Honor Society induction ceremony in the school gymnasium.
This year, 22 students were officially inducted, joining a long-standing tradition of recognizing young leaders who exemplify scholarship,
leadership, citizenship, service and character. The NJHS is more than an honor — it is a commitment to uphold high academic standards while positively impacting the school and broader community. Being selected for membership reflects not only students’ strong academic performance but also their dedication
to making a difference through leadership, community service and ethical behavior.

On April 28th, the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition participated in DEA National Fentanyl Awareness Day at Lindenhurst High School and we couldn’t be more proud of the student who made it happen.

Our youth coalition leaders organized and designed the entire awareness table in the school rotunda, reaching every student who came through during lunch. Interactive activities included the One Pill Can Kill and Real vs. Fake pill recognition display, a sugar scale demonstration showing the terrifyingly small amount of fentanyl that can be lethal, and a prize wheel that kept the energy going all day.
Our team connected one-on-one with students, provided Narcan kits to those who needed them, and shared information about local resources, including our Pizza Box Campaign, which is bringing prevention messaging from middle schoolers through restaurant partners right here in the Town of Babylon.

Copiague Students Honored In Knights Of Columbus Contests
Copiague School District’s elementary and middle school students were honored for their participation in the Copiague Knights of Columbus annual poster and essay contests at the March 9 Board of Education meeting at Copiague Middle School.
The poster contest, now in its 16th year and named in honor of former Grand Knight Robert Waidler, garnered more
than 200 entries to tackle the issue of drug and alcohol abuse. Students received a certificate and prize sponsored by the Copiague Knights of Columbus. Fourteen students from Copiague School District were chosen as winners.

How To Make Grilling Healthier
Grilling is a beloved summer tradition, but it’s not always the healthiest way to eat. Classic backyard barbecue fare like hot dogs and hamburgers may be crowd favorites, but there are simple ways to enjoy the flavor of grilling while maintaining a nutritious diet:
• Choose healthier proteins: Replace burgers and hot dogs with options like fish or skinless chicken breasts. If you still crave a burger, opt for lean
ground poultry instead of beef to cut down on saturated fat.
• Practice moderation: The relaxed atmosphere of barbecues can lead to overeating. Swap out chips and heavy sides for healthier choices like fresh vegetables, fruit salad or chickpea salad, and keep portion sizes reasonable. Health experts recommend about three ounces of
meat per serving, with no more than six ounces.
• Skip the salt: While salt enhances flavor, too much can contribute to high blood pressure. Try a saltfree rub made with spices like chili powder, garlic powder and paprika to add bold flavor without extra sodium.
