Safe Waters Start with Smart Choices: MTAC Continues “Boat Smart, Boat Sober” Initiative
The Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) is proud to continue its Boat Smart, Boat Sober initiative to promote safe and responsible boating throughout the community this summer. As friends and families head out on the water to enjoy the season, MTAC encourages all residents and visitors to help create a safe, fun, and enjoyable boating experience for everyone.
Drinking alcohol or consuming cannabis while boating poses serious health and safety risks that are 100% preventable. In collaboration with the Town of Oyster Bay, MTAC is working to raise awareness about the dangers of boating under the influence and encourage boaters to make safe, responsible decisions while on the water. The initiative aims to reduce boating-related accidents and create safer waterways for everyone.
While boating is a
popular summer activity, alcohol and cannabis can significantly impair a person’s ability to safely operate a boat by affecting balance, coordination, reaction time, and judgment — all of which are critical for safe vessel operation.
Environmental stressors commonly experienced while boating, including sun glare, heat, vibration, wind, wave motion, and engine noise, may intensify these effects and lead to fatigue more quickly.
Operating a boat under the influence of alcohol or cannabis is just as dangerous as driving while impaired. Under New York State law, no person may operate a vessel while impaired or intoxicated by alcohol, cannabis, or illicit drugs. Violators may face heavy fines, imprisonment, and suspension of boating privileges.
MTAC encourages all boaters to designate a sober operator, never allow an impaired individual to operate a vessel, and never
provide alcohol or cannabis to anyone under the age of 21. By making smart choices and looking out for one another, everyone can help make this summer’s boating season safe and enjoyable for the entire community.

One-Stop Passport Weekend
To help residents looking to obtain new passports, Oyster Bay Town Clerk Richard LaMarca announced that his office will offer a special one-stop Passport Weekend on Saturday, June 6th and Sunday, June 7th from 9am to 3pm at both Town Hall North in Oyster Bay and Town Hall South in Massapequa. Residents are required to book appointments in advance.
Requirements for applying for a passport include:
One 2×2 color photograph with a clear view of the applicant’s face against a plain white or light colored background. Photos will also be available for $10 at both Town Halls North and South during Passport Weekend.
Proof of U.S. Citizenship – Previously issued undamaged U.S. passport, certified birth certificate, Consular Report of Birth Abroad or Certification of Birth, Naturalization Certificate, or Certificate of Citizenship.
Proof of Identity –Naturalization Certificate, Valid Driver’s License (cannot have been issued or renewed in the last six months), Current Government ID (city, state or federal), Current Military ID (military and dependents).

Patriotic Mural For America’s 250th Anniversary Unveiled

Steve Labriola recently unveiled a new patriotic mural at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the founding of the United States of America. The mural was completed by local professional muralist, Chelsea Carol, owner and artist of Painted Treasures.

stated, “Today we proudly unveil this patriotic mural honoring 250 years of the American spirit- a tribute to the courage, unity, and resilience that define our great nation. As we celebrate this historic milestone, may this artwork inspire future generations to carry forward the values that make the United States of America exceptional.”

talented artist whose vision brought this tribute to life for our community. I encourage residents to visit this new landmark and join us in celebrating America’s 250th anniversary this summer.”

Saladino Launches ‘History Hunt’ Across Long Island For America’s 250th
Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Town Clerk Rich LaMarca invite history enthusiasts to participate in The Long Island History Hunt, a special summerlong event that will run from Brooklyn to Montauk featuring 26 historical locations where selfie challenges can be completed. This epic adventure, sponsored by the Robert David Lion Gardiner Foundation, runs from May 23rd through September 30th. The Supervisor and Town Clerk were joined at the announcement of the program by Town Receiver of Taxes Jeff Pravato, director of Education and Public Programs at Raynham Hall Museum Justinne LakeJedzinak, Deputy Director Theresa Skvarla and Oyster Bay East Norwich Chamber of Commerce Executive Director Amy Reilly.
Supervisor Saladino stated, “This year’s ‘hunt’ has a special twist, turning the American Revolution into an epic adventure, where participants can visit sites from Brooklyn all the way out to Montauk, to see where history was made. It will feature 26 museums, landmarks and historical sites throughout the region with ties to the Revolutionary War, just like Oyster Bay’s own Raynham Hall Museum.”
Participants can visit lihistoryhunt.com to register and then visit a designated museum, landmark, monument, historic home, park or colonial tavern. At each participating historical location, visitors are invited to take a selfie challenge and upload their photo to be eligible to win some great prizes.
This year’s History Hunt
not only includes more than twice as many locations as last year, but also more ways to win. There are three prize levels. Registrants who complete a challenge at one or more sites are automatically eligible to win a prize. Those who complete a challenge at 10 or more
locations have a chance to win $250 cash. Participants who complete all 26 challenges will earn the title of Revolutionary Trailblazer and be entered into the drawing for the grand prize of $1776.00 and cool merch, which will be awarded at a special ceremony this fall.

Five Ways To Honor The Real Meaning Of Memorial Day
Memorial Day often is celebrated with the excitement of a long weekend and the prospect of firing up the grill for a backyard barbecue. But Memorial Day also is a time to reflect on the men and women who gave their lives to defend American freedom.
Memorial Day was established to honor individuals who died while serving the United States in the Armed Forces and the
holiday is a time to reflect on the sacrifices of the fallen heroes who dedicated and lost their lives in the pursuit of service. The following are some ways to honor those sacrifices this Memorial Day.
• Observe the National Moment of Remembrance. The National Moment of Remembrance is an annual one-minute moment of silence that takes place at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. Established by Congress in 2000, this unifying moment encourages Americans to pause their activities and reflect on the high cost of freedom. The time is significant, as it is a period when most people are enjoying Memorial Day festivities that were made possible by the sacrifices of Armed Forces personnel.
• Honor the American flag. Memorial Day features a unique flag protocol. To properly honor the fallen, the flag should be flown at half-staff until noon. Afterwards, it should be raised to the top of the staff for the remainder of the day, according to the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. The transition marks the nation’s mourning in

the morning hours and then the legacy of fallen veterans later in the afternoon.
• Coordinate flag placement for cemeteries. Organizations like Flags for Fallen Vets and scouting groups make an effort to place small American flags at the grave sites of deceased veterans. Many cemeteries feature sections exclusively for veterans. Similarly, families can visit cemeteries and leave a penny or a stone on the headstone of a veteran, which shows others that someone visited to pay their respects.
• Talk to the next generation. To ensure that the memories of fallen soldiers do not fade into obscurity, living veterans can speak with youth about their service experiences and those of their fallen friends. Schools or local municipalities can organize speaking engagements.
Memorial Day is much more than sales at the furniture store or a day spent manning the grill. It is a day to remember and honor service members who never made it home.
Registration For Summer Swim Teams
Sign Ups Begin Tuesday, May 26th
Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that registration for the Town’s Summer Swim Team begin on Tuesday, May 26th. The program is open to kids ages 6 to 16, and pool membership is required to join. Teams will be hosted at all four community pools: Syosset-Woodbury Park Pool, Marjorie Post Park Pool, Bethpage Community Pool, and Plainview-Old Bethpage Community Pool. Practices begin Monday, June 29th.
Supervisor Saladino stated, “I’m delighted to
welcome back the Town of Oyster Bay’s beloved Swim Teams to all four Town pools this summer. This exciting activity offers young athletes a wonderful opportunity to improve swimming skills, learn good sportsmanship and practice teamwork through healthy exercise and competition.”
The program includes practices and dual meets each week, and teams will compete against other teams within the Nassau Municipal Swim Conference. Practices will be held Mondays, Wednesdays, and Fridays
from 9:00 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. Meet schedules will be distributed at the first practice Monday, June 29th. A swim cap and t-shirt are included with registration.

Throw A Memorial Day Party To Remember
Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer. It’s a time for cold beverages and poolside enjoyment, all the while reflecting on the meaning behind the holiday. People across the country will host Memorial Day gatherings over this long weekend. Throwing an event that hits all the right notes and is enjoyed by all comes down to proper planning.
Lean into Americana
When establishing the theme and decor for the party, opting for a strong Americana theme should be a no-brainer. Enhance tablescapes by choosing classic looks. Opt for a navy or red tablecloth with white ceramic plates and then a red or blue napkin. Fill small silver buckets or mason jars with white hydrangeas and red carnations for a timeless feel. Patriotic aluminum stars and country classics can be purchased at nearby hardware centers.
Respect the flag
Any American flags used for decor at the party should be handled with respect. Flags should never touch the ground, be worn as clothing or used as tablecloths.
Elevate the menu
Give a classic grilling menu an upgrade with a few touches that can make the experience more special. Consider a “buildyour-own” bar with various gourmet toppings that can add extra flavor to burgers and hot dogs. Swap potato salad and cole slaw sides for lighter, gourmet options that won’t spoil in the heat. Watermelon paired with feta or palm hearts paired with cherry tomatoes is light and refreshing. Create a signature drink that offers a nod to the red, white and blue. A batch of lemonade with blueberries and strawberries appeals to all ages. Adults can opt to spike theirs with a favorite spirit.
Classic lawn games
Guests can be treated to some entertainment that goes beyond the pool or sitting barside. Popular lawn games, such as cornhole, Spikeball, bocce, and more encourage guests to get up, move and mingle. Think about having classic activities that can harken back to simpler times. Turn music on and off for a game of “freeze dance.” Or let kids play a friendly game of dodgeball or Red Rover so they stay off of their devices.
Jones Beach State Park To Hold Emergency Training Exercise
It’s important to keep a steady playlist of songs going to maintain the vibe. Tailor the list to feature softer songs when guests are arriving or eating. More upbeat songs can be featured later in the day after people have become comfortable mingling. Use a combination of songs that blend classic summer pop and rock with some patriotic hits.
Write down your task list
Writing down tasks and when to do them can keep a party host on track. Invitations should be sent at least three weeks out. With such a popular entertaining day, sending the invitations earlier might be smart. Shop for non-perishable items a week before. Save food shopping for two or three days before Memorial Day and prep make-ahead items the day before. The grill should be lit and preheated about 30 minutes before guests arrive if the plan is to cook immediately; otherwise, let guests stream in and enjoy chips and dips until the bulk of the cooking will begin.

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Park Police will conduct a largescale simulated emergency response and disaster training exercise on May 31, 2026, within Jones Beach State Park. The training will focus on coordination and emergency response during several simulated scenarios. The public should be advised that a noticeable increase in law enforcement and emergency services presence will be visible throughout the exercise near field 5 within Jones Beach State Park. The emergency management exercise will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 12:00
p.m. on May 31, 2026. The exercise will involve personnel from Park Police, New York State Police, Nassau County Police, Wantagh Fire Department, and operational staff from Jones Beach State Park. Additionally, representatives from other federal, state, and local agencies will be involved in support of and coordination with exercise operations.
The area around Jones Beach Field 5 will be closed to the public. All area traffic will be alerted to the exercises at all entry points into the park. Weapons used during training exercises are incapable of firing a live duty round.
Park Police are seeking
volunteers age 18 and older to portray park visitors from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Individuals under 18 who are enrolled in an auxiliary, explorer, or similar youth program may volunteer with parental consent.
