How To Make Grilling Healthier

Grilling is a beloved summer tradition, but it’s not always the healthiest way to eat. Classic backyard barbecue fare like hot dogs and hamburgers may be crowd favorites, but there are simple ways to enjoy the flavor of grilling while maintaining a nutritious diet:

• Choose healthier proteins: Replace burgers and hot dogs with options like fish or skinless chicken breasts. If you still crave a burger, opt for lean ground poultry instead of beef to cut down on saturated fat.

• Practice moderation: The relaxed atmosphere of barbecues can lead to overeating. Swap out chips and heavy sides for healthier choices like fresh vegetables, fruit salad or chickpea salad, and keep portion sizes reasonable. Health

experts recommend about three ounces of meat per serving, with no more than six ounces.

• Skip the salt: While salt enhances flavor, too much can contribute to high blood pressure. Try a salt-free rub made with spices like chili powder, garlic powder and paprika to add bold flavor without extra sodium.

• Add more vegetables: Grilled vegetables are both tasty and nutritious. Brush them with a healthy oil like olive oil to prevent sticking and bring out their natural flavors over the flame.

With a few simple adjustments, grilling can be just as healthy as it is delicious, making your next backyard barbecue both enjoyable and better for you.

On April 28th, the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition participated in DEA National Fentanyl Awareness Day at Lindenhurst High School and we couldn’t be more proud of the student who made it happen.

Thank you Vanessa And Maddie!

Our youth coalition leaders organized and designed the entire awareness table in the school rotunda, reaching every student who came through during lunch. Interactive activities included the One Pill Can Kill and Real vs. Fake pill recognition display, a sugar scale demonstration showing the terrifyingly small amount of fentanyl that can be lethal, and a prize wheel that kept the energy going all day.

Our team connected one-on-one with students, provided Narcan kits to those who needed them, and shared information about local resources, including our Pizza Box Campaign, which is bringing prevention messaging from middle schoolers through restaurant partners right here in the Town of Babylon.

Thank you to Lindenhurst High School for welcoming us, and to every student who stopped to learn something new.

Throw A Memorial Day Party To Remember

Memorial Day weekend is the unofficial kickoff to summer. It’s a time for cold beverages and poolside enjoyment, all the while reflecting on the meaning behind the holiday. People across the country will host Memorial Day gatherings over this long weekend. Throwing an event that hits all the right notes and is enjoyed by all comes down to proper planning.

Lean into Americana

When establishing the theme and decor for the party, opting for a strong Americana theme should be a no-brainer. Enhance tablescapes by choosing classic looks. Opt for a navy or red tablecloth with white ceramic plates and then a red or blue napkin. Fill small silver buckets or mason jars with white hydrangeas and red carnations for a timeless feel. Patriotic aluminum stars and country classics can be purchased at nearby

hardware centers. Respect the flag

Any American flags used for decor at the party should be handled with respect. Flags should never touch the ground, be worn as clothing or used as tablecloths.

Elevate the menu

Give a classic grilling menu an upgrade with a few touches that can make the experience more special. Consider a “buildyour-own” bar with various gourmet toppings that can add extra flavor to burgers and hot dogs. Swap potato salad and cole slaw sides for lighter, gourmet options that won’t spoil in the heat. Watermelon paired with feta or palm hearts paired with cherry tomatoes is light and refreshing. Create a signature drink that offers a nod to the red, white and blue. A batch of lemonade with blueberries and strawberries appeals to all ages. Adults can opt to spike

theirs with a favorite spirit.

Classic lawn games

Guests can be treated to some entertainment that goes beyond the pool or sitting barside. Popular lawn games, such as cornhole, Spikeball, bocce, and more encourage guests to get up, move and mingle.

Think about having classic activities that can harken back to simpler times. Turn music on and off for a game of “freeze dance.” Or let kids play a friendly game of dodgeball or Red Rover so they stay off of their devices.

Secure the soundtrack

It’s important to keep a steady playlist of songs going to maintain the vibe. Tailor the list to feature softer songs when guests are arriving or eating. More upbeat songs can be featured later in the day after people have become comfortable mingling. Use a combination of songs that blend classic

summer pop and rock with some patriotic hits.

Write down your task list

Writing down tasks and when to do them can keep a party host on track. Invitations should be sent at least three weeks out. With such a popular entertaining day, sending the invitations earlier might be smart. Shop for non-perishable items a week before. Save food shopping for two or three days before Memorial Day and prep make-ahead items the day before. The grill should be lit and preheated about 30 minutes before guests arrive if the plan is to cook immediately; otherwise, let guests stream in and enjoy chips and dips until the bulk of the cooking will begin.

Memorial Day festivities are nearly here, and preparing for this unofficial summer kickoff can lead to a more organized, fun and enjoyable party.

Nutritious Snacks Kids Will Love

Medical professionals say parents play a vital role in helping children develop healthy relationships with food from an early age. By offering two or three nutritious snack options, parents can give children a sense of choice while still guiding them toward balanced eating habits.

Although kids may prefer sugary or processed snacks, many healthy options can be just as fun and appealing. Creative choices like “ants on a log,” fruit kabobs and smoothies make nutritious foods more exciting, especially when children help prepare them. Quick options such as cheese sticks, yogurt parfaits, whole-grain crackers and hummus with fruits or vegetables are also convenient for busy families.

Experts say consistency is key. By regularly offering wholesome, flavorful snacks and modeling healthy habits, parents can help children build a strong foundation for lifelong wellness.

Five Ways To Honor The Real Meaning Of Memorial Day

Memorial Day often is celebrated with the excitement of a long weekend and the prospect of firing up the grill for a backyard barbecue. But Memorial Day also is a time to reflect on the men and women who gave their lives to defend American freedom.

Memorial Day was established to honor individuals who died while serving the United States in the Armed Forces and the

holiday is a time to reflect on the sacrifices of the fallen heroes who dedicated and lost their lives in the pursuit of service. The following are some ways to honor those sacrifices this Memorial Day.

• Observe the National Moment of Remembrance. The National Moment of Remembrance is an annual one-minute moment of silence that takes place at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. Established by Congress in 2000, this unifying moment encourages Americans to pause their activities and reflect on the high cost of freedom. The time is significant, as it is a period when most people are enjoying Memorial Day festivities that were made possible by the sacrifices of Armed Forces personnel.

• Honor the American flag. Memorial Day features a unique flag protocol. To properly honor the fallen, the flag should be flown at half-staff until noon. Afterwards, it should be raised to the top of the staff for the remainder of the day, according to the Veterans of Foreign Wars organization. The transition marks the nation’s mourning in

MEMORIAL DAY

May

25th, 2026

the morning hours and then the legacy of fallen veterans later in the afternoon.

• Coordinate flag placement for cemeteries. Organizations like Flags for Fallen Vets and scouting groups make an effort to place small American flags at the grave sites of deceased veterans. Many cemeteries feature sections exclusively for veterans. Similarly, families can visit cemeteries and leave a penny or a stone on the headstone of a veteran, which shows others that someone visited to pay their respects.

• Talk to the next generation. To ensure that the memories of fallen soldiers do not fade into obscurity, living veterans can speak with youth about their service experiences and those of their fallen friends. Schools or local municipalities can organize speaking engagements.

Memorial Day is much more than sales at the furniture store or a day spent manning the grill. It is a day to remember and honor service members who never made it home.

United States Navy Blue Angels To Headline The 2026 FourLeaf Air Show At Jones Beach

The annual FourLeaf Air Show at Jones Beach State Park will take place on Sunday, July 5, 2026, and Monday, July 6, 2026, as part of the United States’ Semiquincentennial (250th) celebration.

Traditionally held over Memorial Day weekend, the 2026 air show has been rescheduled to align with Fleet Week New York, which has also moved to the July 4th holiday weekend. The United States Navy Blue Angels will headline the show, joined by additional military performers and internationally recognized civilian aerobatic acts.

Although the air show will not be held on Memorial Day weekend in 2026, Jones Beach State Park will still host events during that time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.

Organizers look forward to welcoming visitors to

Jones Beach over the July 4th weekend for the 2026 FourLeaf Air Show.

Jones Beach State Park To Hold Emergency Training Exercise

The New York State Office of Parks, Recreation and Historic Preservation and the New York State Park Police will conduct a largescale simulated emergency response and disaster training exercise on May 31, 2026, within Jones Beach State Park. The training will focus on coordination and emergency response during several simulated scenarios.

The public should be advised that a noticeable increase in law enforcement and emergency services presence will be visible throughout the exercise near field 5 within Jones Beach State Park. The emergency management exercise will begin at 8:00 a.m. and end at 12:00

p.m. on May 31, 2026. The exercise will involve personnel from Park Police, New York State Police, Nassau County Police, Wantagh Fire Department, and operational staff from Jones Beach State Park. Additionally, representatives from other federal, state, and local agencies will be involved in support of and coordination with exercise operations.

The area around Jones Beach Field 5 will be closed to the public. All area traffic will be alerted to the exercises at all entry points into the park. Weapons used during training exercises are incapable of firing a live duty round.

Park Police are seeking

volunteers age 18 and older to portray park visitors from 6:30 a.m. to 12:00 p.m. Individuals under 18 who are enrolled in an auxiliary, explorer, or similar youth program may volunteer with parental consent. Volunteers will need to provide a signed volunteer service agreement at the time of service. A copy is available at parks.ny.gov/sites/default/ files/VolunteerService AgreementEnglish. pdf. Bring Your Burger-Making Skills To

The Next Level

Hamburgers are a staple of menus in millions of homes. Whether you’re hosting friends on Memorial Day weekend or simply looking for a hearty midweek meal, burgers and summertime cooking go hand in hand. Hamburgers are a straightforward dish that are often prepared on a grill. But burgers also can be prepared on a stovetop, which can add a new flavor profile to this beloved staple. Those looking to do just that can try this recipe for “Beef Burgers With Onions, Spinach, Ketchup, and Blue Cheese” from Lines+Angles.

DIRECTIONS:

For the sauce: Heat the oil in a pan and lightly sauté the diced onion and garlic. Stir in the honey and sugar and simmer briefly. Mix in the tomato puree, passata, Worcestershire sauce, vinegar, and whiskey. Simmer until thickened. Season the sauce with salt, pepper, paprika, and chilli powder to taste. For the burgers: Place the beef in a bowl, add the onions, salt, pepper, mustard, Worcestershire sauce, and chili sauce, and mix well. Shape into 4 burgers. Preheat a griddle pan. Lightly oil the pan and grill the burgers for 8 to 10 minutes, turning once. During the last minute of cooking, top the burgers with cheese and allow to melt. Remove the burgers from the pan and set aside. Halve the burger buns horizontally and toast in the pan, cut-side down, for 1 minute, then remove. Layer the bottom half of each bun with spinach and sprinkle with crispy onions. Place the burgers on top, drizzle with tomato sauce and cover with the top bun halves. Fix with a skewer if desired and serve with the remaining sauce separately.

About the Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council (NSHC)

The Nassau-Suffolk Hospital Council represents the notfor-profit and public hospitals on Long Island. It works in conjunction with the Suburban Hospital Alliance of New York State to advance legislative and regulatory priorities. NSHC serves as the local and collective voice of hospitals on Long Island.

The donation was made possible through a successful fundraiser held at Cebolline’s Restaurant with the support of Brother Knight and Honorary Chairman, TOB Councilman Anthony Manetta. Council #794 proudly continues this annual tradition of supporting local families and strengthening the community through charitable service.

Did You Know?

The American Academy of Dermatology recommends that parents avoid exposing babies younger than six months to the sun’s rays. Infants should be kept in the shade as much as possible and dressed in lightweight and long sleeves, pants, a wide-brimmed hat, and sunglasses. The AAD also notes that, when possible, sunscreen use should be avoided in babies younger than six months. Children six months and older can use a broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with a sun-protection factor (SPF) of 30 or higher. These sunscreens should be applied to all areas that are not covered by clothing, and reapplied approximately every two hours (or as often as the product label indicates). Ingredients such as zinc oxide or titanium dioxide may cause less irritation to the sensitive skin of children six months and older.

Remember. Honor. Celebrate

On Memorial Day, as we gather with friends and family, host backyard BBQs, let’s pause to remember the meaning of the day.

Our Veterans.

We remember their sacrifice, honor their service, and celebrate their legacy. We are indebted to everyone in our armed forces, our Veterans, and those who presently serve, for the freedoms we enjoy today. They are our family, friends, and neighbors, and some paid the ultimate sacrifice for defending America.

President Harry S. Truman once said, “Our debt to the heroic men and valiant women in the service of our country can never be repaid. They have earned our undying gratitude. America will never forget their sacrifices.”

Thank you for your service!
