Honor Veterans This Memorial Day
Memorial Day is often associated with the excitement of a long weekend and backyard barbecues, but it is also a time to reflect on the men and women who gave their lives to defend American freedom. Established to honor those who died while serving in the Armed Forces, the day encourages remembrance of their sacrifices. Here are a few ways to pay tribute:
• Observe the National Moment of Remembrance: This one-minute moment of silence takes place at 3 p.m. local time on Memorial Day. Established by Congress in 2000, it asks Americans to pause and reflect on the cost of freedom.
• Honor the American flag: On Memorial Day, the flag is flown at half-staff until noon, then raised to full-staff for the rest of the day, symbolizing mourning in the morning and remembrance in the afternoon.
• Place flags at gravesites: Organizations and volunteers often decorate veterans’ graves with small American flags. Families can also visit cemeteries and leave a penny or stone to show respect.
• Share stories with the next generation: Veterans can help preserve the memory of fallen service members by speaking with young people about their experiences and those of their comrades.
Memorial Day is more than a day off—it is a time to remember those who never returned home and to honor their service and sacrifice.
On April 28th, the Lindenhurst Community Cares Coalition participated in DEA National Fentanyl Awareness Day at Lindenhurst High School and we couldn’t be more proud of the student who made it happen.

Our youth coalition leaders organized and designed the entire awareness table in the school rotunda, reaching every student who came through during lunch. Interactive activities included the One Pill Can Kill and Real vs. Fake pill recognition display, a sugar scale demonstration showing the terrifyingly small amount of fentanyl that can be lethal, and a prize wheel that kept the energy going all day.
Our team connected one-on-one with students, provided Narcan kits to those who needed them, and shared information about local resources, including our Pizza Box Campaign, which is bringing prevention messaging from middle schoolers through restaurant partners right here in the Town of Babylon.
Thank you to Lindenhurst High School for welcoming us, and to every student who stopped to learn something new.

North Babylon High School celebrated College Signing Day on May 1, honoring seniors who have committed to continuing their academic and athletic careers at colleges and universities across the country.
The event recognized student-athletes who will be competing at the collegiate level, marking an important milestone in their educational and athletic journeys. Surrounded by family members, coaches, teachers and administrators, each student was recognized for their hard work, dedication and perseverance both on the field and in the classroom.

United States Navy Blue Angels To Headline The 2026 FourLeaf Air Show At Jones Beach
Grief And Loss Peer-Led Support Group
First Thursday Of Every Month, 6:30 P.M. To 7:30 P.M.
Gabriel’s Giving Tree (GGT), along with the Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD), Families in Support of Treatment (FIST), Family & Children’s Association, (FCA) and Human Understanding and Growth Services (HUGS) are joining together to
offer a free grief and loss peer-led support group. The group will meet at the East End THRIVE location, at 680 Elton Street, Riverhead, from 6:30 to 7:30 p.m. the first Thursday of each month. The focus of the support group will be to explore ways to find comfort, share support and begin healing for those who have lost a loved one.
The annual FourLeaf Air Show at Jones Beach State Park will take place on Sunday, July 5, 2026, and Monday, July 6, 2026, as part of the United States’ Semiquincentennial (250th) celebration. Traditionally held over Memorial Day weekend, the 2026 air show has been rescheduled to align with Fleet Week New York, which has also moved to the July 4th holiday weekend. The United States Navy Blue Angels will headline the show, joined by additional military performers and internationally recognized civilian aerobatic acts.
Although the air show will not be held on Memorial Day weekend in 2026, Jones Beach State Park will still host events during that time to honor those who made the ultimate sacrifice in service to the nation.
Organizers look forward to welcoming visitors to Jones Beach over the July 4th weekend for the 2026 FourLeaf Air Show.
“Losing a loved one can feel overwhelming, but you don’t have to go through it alone,” said Paulette Phililppe, founder of Gabriel’s Giving Tree.

The Golden Lion Awards recognize individuals who demonstrate outstanding leadership, service, and a steadfast commitment to strengthening their communities. Councilman Manetta was
honored alongside a distinguished group of leaders for his continued dedication to public service and the residents of the Town of Babylon.
“Councilman Manetta’s commitment to our community is second to none,” said Supervisor Rich Schaffer. “Whether it’s supporting local organizations, advancing economic development, or working to improve the quality of life for our residents, Anthony leads with integrity and purpose. This recognition is well deserved.”
Since joining the Town Board,
Councilman Manetta has been a strong advocate for initiatives that enhance neighborhoods, support small businesses, and deliver meaningful services to residents. His hands-on approach and deep connection to the community embody the very spirit of the Golden Lion Award.
