Options for Community Living, Inc. is a local not for profit organization whose mission is to assist individuals and families in need develop their fullest potential for independent living. Options was formed in 1982 to respond to the need for supportive housing for people with serious mental illness. The Mental Health Residential Program grew rapidly, and in 1994 Options introduced case management services to Long Islanders living with HIV/AIDS. Soon after, a housing program for this population was started as well. More recently, Options has partnered with Long Island Health Homes to offer care coordination services to high need Medicaid users with chronic illnesses through the Access to Care Program. As of today, Options serves more than 1,800 adults and children annually through its programs and manages over 180 scattered housing sites across Nassau and Suffolk counties! Options care coordinators help connect people to health care services and a myriad of resources. Often their clients are homeless or on the brink of homelessness. This is especially difficult when young children are involved. Last year, the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless reported that on a given night in January, 3,937

Linda had experienced a lot of trauma in her life, the greatest of which was learning that she had contracted the HIV virus following a long-term relationship. Fran provided Linda with some housing resources and when she found an apartment, Fran helped her apply for financial assistance to cover the security deposit. New Year’s Resolutions Work, If You Work Them. Last year, on December 31, 2017, I elected to spend New Year’s Eve quietly at home with my son and one of my brothers, and it was fabulously serene. We cooked a beautiful meal, watched movies, had some heart-to-heart talks and sat together on a big comfy couch to watch the ball drop. That night, as 2017 turned to 2018, I thought about the fact that I hadn’t had my entertainment column since I’d exited an in-house editor position that I worked at from 2005 through 2012. I thought about how much I missed speaking with interesting people and writing their stories. It has always felt like my life’s work. In that moment, I declared to myself that 2018 would be the year that I would bring my column back to life, and this go around, I would own my own intellectual property and be the master of my own fate. I am not sure what it was, the planets aligning, or perhaps the universe conspiring to make my New Year’s resolution come true, but before I knew it, I had one hundred media outlets across the globe on board. Now, as I approach New Year’s Eve 2018 and New Year’s Day 2019, I look back at what I have accomplished with my entertainment interview column. I am filled with pride that I didn’t just take another aimless trip around the sun this past year. I made every moment count and my New Year’s resolution was accomplished. As you are aware, I have not one, but two columns (of course “Living Well” is the second, and happened most serendipitously). One year ago today, I did not have either. That’s how much a life can change in a year. I don’t state this to brag, but to turn you into a believer, because

I want your New Year’s resolution to happen for you, in spades, in 2019. I want you to look back in December of 2019 feeling on top of the world because you just took the most productive and joyous trip around the sun; greater than you ever thought was within the realm of possibility. We’ve all heard the jokes made about how everyone is going to join a gym and get into the best shape of their life or finally sit down at the computer to write that novel. I get it. But frankly, what does that have to do with you? So some people don’t follow through. Be the person who does. Whether or not you cross more amazing things off your bucket list in 2019 or put your dreams in the “coulda-woulda-shoulda” pile is in nobody else’s hands but your own. It could be something leisure related. Perhaps you have been meaning to take an art class or a course at your local college. Maybe you want to learn to cook. There are no small goals; no small desires. On December 31st, declare it so, and make it so.

Matthew Lazina of Massapequa Park, a successful graduate of Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, returned to his alma mater for the school’s first annual Alumi Day. Matthew (Class of 2015) shared his experiences of life after high school and talked about how Barry Tech helped him to succeed in college and his career. Following a number of informative presentations, discussions and breakout groups with the students, alumni had the opportunity to visit their old classes and meet with their former mentors. Barry Tech is a career and technical education high school that offers over 40 hands-on courses designed to help students develop the skills they need to get a

step ahead in their chosen career fields. Classes are taught in a state-of-the-art facility simulating realworld work environments that meet current industry standards. Bringing Joy Through Music Young musicians from the Massapequa School District recently performed at a pair of holiday events in the community. The East Lake Elementary School Bell Choir, the McKenna Elementary School fifthgrade orchestra and the Massapequa High School Chamber Ensemble took part in Massapequa’s Park

Holiday Open House at Village Hall on December 2nd. They performed music while community members celebrated the start of the holiday season and visited with Santa and Mrs. Claus. The Berner Middle School sixth-grade Early Morning Risers Chorus, under the direction of Kathleen Dyckman,

performed on December 8th at the annual Christmas tree and Menorah lighting at Klestinec Park on Broadway in Massapequa. Songs such as “The Spirit of the Season,” “Christmas Rush” and “Celebrating Hanukkah” warmed the hearts of those watching on the chilly evening.

from the book, “Because I got you to look after me, and you got me to look after you.” Student Ryan Mizsak designed the mural, and a final sketch was created by art teacher Nicole Hassell, who supervised students as they painted. The ELA students partnered with their peers from the school’s Community Career Connections program to

It wasn’t until 1975 that Congress passed the Education for All Handicapped Children Act. “We wanted to celebrate how far we’ve come,” Ms. Rabie said. The students then came up with an idea for a mural, to be inspired by a quote

More than 50 students at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus have left their mark on the school by contributing to a mural that promotes acceptance and inclusion. In the days before Thanksgiving, students worked together on the mural, which added color to a large white cinder block wall in a second-ﬂoor hallways of the building’s new wing. It features a tree in the center, surrounded by different colored shapes to represent a puzzle. Ninth-graders in Kristen Petersen and Jennifer Rabie’s integrated coteaching English language arts classes recently read John Steinbeck’s “Of Mice and Men.” As part of their analysis of the book, they discussed the evolution of education for people with disabilities. Ms. Rabie said that students reacted with heartache and disappointment

Santa’s elves have been busy at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District to ensure that every child has a great Christmas. Those elves are fifth-graders in John Coyne’s class, who are spearheading the annual holiday toy drive. Every morning, the student put on their elf hats and go from classroom to classroom to pick up

toys donated by Birch Lane families. When the toy drive ends on Dec. 19, all items will be donated to the Wantagh-based John Theissen Children’s Foundation. Toys will then be distributed to children in hospitals, shelters and rehabilitation centers. “They’re the ones who need it most, more than we need it,” said Michael Murphy. “It makes me feel good heling other

Community members are also welcome to drop off new and unwrapped toys at Birch Lane during normal school hours.

HOLIDAY SWEETNESS - Graham crackers, icing and a large assortment of candy could be found on the tables in kindergarten classes at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on Dec. 12. Each child welcomed a parent, grandparent or other special guest to build a gingerbread house together. Holiday Hands-On Learning were charged with making snowmen out of Crayola Model Magic, a material similar to clay. Each team had to make a small, medium and large sphere before they could add the details like arms, buttons, eyes, a nose and scarf. The activity emphasized the importance of following step-by-step directions to successfully complete a project. Ms. Markowski commissioned second-

grade students to help the Gingerbread Man successfully cross a river to escape a hungry fox. Children worked in groups and had to build bridges with limited materials including 10 straws, four Popsicle sticks and piece of cardboard. After construction, they sat their paper Gingerbread Man on the bridge and added weights until he fell off to test the durability of the design.

The Power of Magic Nick Magrene of the Massapequa UFSD, who is studying auto collision at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, helped to transform a local youngster into a superstar for a day. Nick and his fellow Barry Tech students lent their talents to Magic Wheelchair, a nonprofit organization that creates unique costumes for kids in wheelchairs at no cost to families. When aspiring pilot Chase expressed his desire to lead his school’s costume parade, the Barry Tech students were immediately on board to help him soar in

an impressive helicopter costume. Their expert, custom paintwork made Chase’s chopper really shine. Barry Tech is a career and technical education high school that offers over 40 hands-on courses designed to help students develop the skills they need to get a step ahead in their chosen career fields. Classes are taught in a state-of-the-art facility simulating realworld work environments that meet current industry standards. Classes may be held in an airplane hangar, horse-training stable,

carpentry shop or video production studio. The members of the faculty are professionals in their fields who are eager to share their experience and expertise.
