The Christmas Column Christmas time is here. The days and weeks and months of planning and preparation, of shopping and wrapping and decorating and baking, have all led to this brief window of time, from Christmas Eve through Christmas Day, which lends itself to all sorts of magical moments and memories. These are the days we remember for years to come, the snapshots we savor, the recipes we pass down from generation to generation. Say what you will about the commercialism and chaos that has engulfed our society – this the time we
can recapture the true spirit of the season. Speaking of commercialism, anyone who attempted to purchase Adele tickets in the last week or so was faced with the reality that, unless you have thousands of dollars at your disposal to splurge on a pair of seats at MSG, you had best sit back and enjoy that $15 CD and accept the fact that live performances are becoming increasingly out of reach for the average consumer. For me, two straight days of manically refreshing my browser during both the advance sale and general sale led to nothing but wasted time and ample frustration. ‘Tis the season, indeed. The upside? In
the grand scheme of things, being deprived of live entertainment (temporarily, as I haven’t given up quite yet) isn’t the end of the world. As we prepare to turn the page on yet another year, we should give thanks for the important things – our health, our loved ones, the ability to celebrate with family and friends… perspective. And with that, I wish you all a very Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year. Next Week: Buddy the Betta weighs in on his first holiday season, his Christmas wish list and that glittering ball getting ready to drop in Times Square.
When it comes to natural gas pipelines, there’s no such thing as too safe.
Delivering safe, reliable natural gas service to our customers is our top priority. Pipeline safety is something we take very seriously at National Grid. Even though most lines are buried underground, that doesn’t mean you can ignore them. Keep your family and community safe by helping to prevent gas leaks. Always call New York 811 at 811 or 1-800-272-4480 before you dig. Know the signs of a gas leak. We’ve added a spoiled egg smell that makes natural gas easier to identify. Look for bubbles in standing water, a white cloudy mist or blowing dust, which indicates that an underground gas line may have ruptured; or, listen for a hissing, roaring or whistling sound. Smell gas. Act fast. If you smell, see or hear any of those indications, leave the area immediately, then call National Grid at 1-800-490-0045. Be smart and be safe. Know what’s below — call before you dig and know the signs of a gas leak. Visit www.nationalgrid.com for additional safety information.

In an effort to address the growing problem of homelessness among New York families, Community Housing Innovations (CHI) and Suffolk County Executive Steve Bellone have joined together to launch the CHI Fresh Start program. This initiative will allow the public to directly purchase Bed Bath & Beyond® gift cards for homeless families in five counties outside of New York City. As part of the kickoff for this program, Mr. Bellone presented the Harris family with the first-ever CHI Fresh Start-funded $100 Bed Bath & Beyond gift card, which he has purchased as a gift. BE MORE POSITIVE, HAPPY, HEALTHY & SMART That is what you will learn by reading, Positivity! Unlike other books regarding happiness, this book builds a foundation on being smarter, obtaining the skills necessary toward gainful employment and managing money successfully. How can a person be happy if they do not have a good job, cannot give a good speech and cannot invest wisely? In the highly competitive world in which we live, a foundation must be built that makes people happy and healthy. The foundation starts with positive thinking and a healthy lifestyle but it should be coupled with continuing education and prowess in accumulating and managing money. This answers the question, how can a person be happy in today’s world. “Reading Positivity is a game changer for every reader. The unique wisdom and philosophy of life that Harry Edelson shares proves that life can be easy and joyful for everyone. Imagine a world if seven billion people lived by Positivity! Thank you for sharing this masterpiece. Harry Edelson has figured out true keys to a good life – which is the one common denominator everyone wants. And I know, because I’ve interviewed over 400 of the top CEOs, and I see a lot of wisdom and very successful people…and Harry has truly figured it out. What a gift you offer in this book.” ROBERT REISS, HOST & CEO, THE CEO SHOW “As Benjamin Franklin said: ‘An investment in knowledge pays the best interest.’ The wisdom in Harry Edelson’s book is like finding a great investment. It continues to grow in value and will pay dividends throughout your life. This is the same philosophy that the brilliant investor, George Soros, has advocated through his Open Society Foundations where I served as a Trustee for many years” JOHN W. ALLEN, INT’L INVESTMENT BANKER AND CHAIRMAN OF GREATER CHINA CORP “The interesting thing about Harry Edelson is that he is usually the smartest guy in the room and what is amazing, the happiest guy in the room. His book tells it all and can be easily absorbed by adults and students alike.” ELIZABETH KABLER, TRUSTEE, ANNENBERG FOUNDATION TRUST AT SUNNYLANDS, FOUNDER, NY CENTER FOR LIVING

The Children’s Center at United Cerebral Palsy of Greater Suffolk Inc. brought Rockefeller Center to its students this holiday season. The school hosted a tree lighting ceremony with a special visit from Santa on Friday, December 11th. Principal Sherri Glazer said that it is difficult for students to attend events like the Rockefeller Tree Lighting due to limitations, but this year students enjoyed a spectacular event that was just as fun. “Rockefeller Center has nothing on us,” Glazer told her overjoyed students as the tree was lit. Students had an
opportunity to place their handmade ornaments on the tree and then staff, students and parents counted down to light the tree. This was followed by individual pictures and personal time with Santa. Snacks were served and each student received a toy of their choice. Local artist Mel Moran serenaded the crowd with acoustic versions of holiday songs during the event. “The Children’s Center Tree Lighting was a huge success,” Glazer said. “This event supported our students’ independence and functional movement as well as supporting them with positioning while getting the perfect picture
with Santa. I want to thank the Patchogue Rotary and the Gutierrez Family for sponsoring the event. Thank You to Mel Moran and to Edward Friedman who played Santa and donated the toys to the school.” The Children’s Center is a comprehensive educational program designed to meet the needs of students with developmental delays and disabilities from infancy through 21 years of age. The program operates through funding provided by the New York State Department of Education and the New York State Department of Health.
News Of Older Houses (NAPSI)—Older homes often have a unique charm—but few have insulation that meets modern energy efficiency standards. This can result in air leaks, wasted energy and high utility bills. One way to fix this is with spray polyurethane foam (SPF) insulation. It can be seamlessly added in and around walls, attics and roofs. By sealing cracks, seams and joints, some SPF products provide
a waterproof membrane that acts as a vapor and air barrier, which in addition to insulating improves energy efficiency. A properly insulated home can reduce heating and cooling needs by 30 percent, according to the Department of Energy. Many homeowners don’t realize that the attic is one of the main places where heat and cold air can escape. As the Department of Energy explains, holes
in a typical attic account for 15 percent of a home’s energy loss. Cracks and gaps let air out and rainwater in. SPF can fill in around the cracks to create an effective barrier. You can learn more at www.whysprayfoam.org. Savings vary. Find out why in the seller’s fact sheet on R-values. Higher R-values mean greater insulating power.

Living With Diabetes (NAPSI)—Chef Chris Smith (aka The Diabetic Chef), a graduate of the Culinary Institute of America and a person living with type 1 diabetes, may have good news for the nearly 30 million other Americans with his condition: Being diagnosed with diabetes doesn’t mean your life needs to lack flavor. There are many ways to prepare nutritious and delicious meals without sacrificing taste. In fact, Chef Smith
worked with Equal 0-calorie sweetener to develop a digital recipe guide and tips to take the guesswork out of meal planning. Five other things he suggests: • Use your resources, including your health care provider, dietitian and Certified Diabetes Educator. • Understand the relationship between carbohydrates and blood sugar and learn how to manage them.
• Monitor how much sodium, saturated fat and sugar you consume. • Incorporate more fruits and vegetables into your diet. • Read nutritional labels—know what you’re eating. A variety of sweet and savory dishes that use Equal instead of sugar are suitable for people with diabetes and anyone who wants a healthy lifestyle. It tastes great in hot and cold beverages, on fruit or cereal, and in most recipes that use sugar.

While social workers and housing specialists do their best, families face the bleak prospect of spending the joyous holiday season alone with strangers. Finding an affordable, permanent home takes an average of four months. Since most people are in emergency housing due to eviction or foreclosure, they often have very little to their names. essentials - beds, a dining table, a couch - the gift cards will allow the families to buy linens, blankets, pillows and housewares that turn a house or apartment into a home.

Global Connections projects using a host of options, such as dragging in videos, recording interviews, writing their own text posts or uploading documents. As a culminating event, the students took a virtual field trip through “Field Trip Zoom,” provided by Nassau BOCES videoconferencing service with fourth-grade Library classes from Seaford Manor Elementary School and Babylon Memorial Grade School. There, teacher-librarians worked with students on their interpretations on Padlet during library time and created presentations using Google Drive. The children “loved”
having a virtual visit with their neighbors in Seaford and Babylon and shared what they learned through the author study,” Gonzalez said. “The students used a lot of inferencing, comprehension and critical-thinking skills to make connections about the global messages in the books, and they were proud to share their work with students from other schools. They were also intrigued to discover that their interpretations of the books were similar to those of their local neighbors and worldwide.”

Lockhart Elementary School fourth graders, under the guidance of teacher-librarian Tara Gonzalez, connected through books and technology with students from around the world, and those in their own backyard, when they participated in the 2015 Global Read Aloud. During their library period, the students joined thousands in developing thoughtful interpretations of Amy Krause Rosenthal’s children’s books. They discussed and shared ideas using Padlet, an online tool that provides a digital canvas where users can create collaborative

Over two million New Yorkers are caring for an older parent, spouse or other loved one, helping them to live independently at home. These family caregivers have a huge responsibility, and now there’s support in place that will make life a little bit easier for them. A new law, the CARE Act, makes sure family caregivers are recognized when their loved ones go into the hospital: that they’re designated in the patient’s medical record, notified when the patient will be released, and have the instruction they need to safely help their loved one stay at home. AARP New York went to work at the Capitol to make this kind of support a reality, because supporting family caregivers is a top priority for all of us. AARP thanks Senator Kemp Hannon for his leadership in sponsoring and passing The CARE Act, which goes into effect on April 23, 2016.
Share your thanks with Senator Hannon.

YOUTH OUTREACH - On December 10th, the staff from NuHealth Family Health Centers participated in a community event hosted by the Gateway Youth Outreach program. The ACCESS Program is a yearlong program for at risk high school students in Elmont and Sewanhaka school districts. The 21 students who attended the event had the opportunity to network with medical professionals and learn about the different steps that lead them to their current positions.
Maintenance Pays at resale, it’s a good idea to get it serviced regularly. The car will not only run better, it will be highlighted on a Carfax Report as a “well maintained” vehicle. Keep track of the service history so you can prove you did the right thing to prospective buyers. To help, you can
get reminders about upcoming service from the free myCarfax mobile app. Subscribers also learn of any open recalls on their cars. To find local service shops and get tips on keeping your car well maintained, visit www. mycarfax.com.
A Juicy Way To Enjoy A Healthier Lifestyle (NAPSI)—There’s good news for those who have embraced drinking fresh fruit and vegetable juices as a way to pursue a more healthful diet: Enjoying such juices just got easier. That’s because a leading juice retailer that is also recognized as a healthy lifestyle brand has revealed that it’s expanding its squeezed-to-order, fresh
juice offerings nationally. The fresh, made-to-order juices, available at Jamba Juice, incorporate highnutrient and on-trend whole foods including kale, beets, cucumbers, apples, oranges and chia seeds. They’re available in a variety of flavors, including: • Tropical Greens—a combination of super
greens, apple, pineapple and chia • Veggie Harvest—a mixture of beet and carrot juices with super greens, apple and ginger • Carrot Cayenne—a blend of carrot and apple juices with the added kick of ginger and cayenne. To learn more, visit www. JambaJuice.com.
Osteoporosis
( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures
than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should
Lockhart Learns Computers Lockhart students, under the guidance of teacher-librarian Tara Gonzalez, discovered how to computer code along with millions of students worldwide when they logged into Code.org for the annual “Hour of Code” campaign held in conjunction with Computer Science Education Week, December 7th-13th, 2016. Launched in 2013, the Hour of Code was designed to take the mystery out of coding by providing computer users of all ages and populations access
to fun, easy-to-follow programs that teach the basics of coding. Elementary-age students had the opportunity to learn the skill through new Star Wars and Frozenthemed coding programs, among others, that allowed them to build their own video games. “By engaging in this campaign, students learned that creating code can be easy, fun, and inspiring,” Gonzalez said. “This campaign ties in beautifully with our goal of exposing and engaging students in 21st Century
learning by fostering the use of critical-thinking and problem-solving skills, which are needed to advance through the programs.” Because it is web-based, students can improve their coding skills outside the classroom and many are participating at home, according to Gonzalez. “Students are now sharing the coding they are doing at home on the Library Haiku page,” she said. “This will surely become an annual event at Lockhart!”

Many doctors are learning more about this testing device at www. hologic.com. LOCKHART LEARNS COMPUTERS - Lockhart teacher-librarian Tara Gonzalez and students happily display the completion certificate each student received and a simple message, “We love Hour of Code.”

Take Heart With Tea An apple a day may keep the doctor away, but a recent study found drinking tea might keep the cardiologist at bay.
The USDA reported that men and women who drank black tea for three weeks reduced their total and bad
cholesterol (LDL) levels by an average of 7.5 percent. Researchers concluded that drinking tea may reduce the
risk of coronary heart disease. Antioxidants called flavonoids, found in both green and black teas, are thought to
be potent weapons in the fight against heart disease. That news may be especially important
for women, given that heart disease kills more women than all forms of cancer combined including breast cancer.
