No incidents of outsiders entering the building have been reported. In addition to safety, the IDs serve to increase efficiency in several ways. The IDs are equipped with a bar code, allowing students to use it as a library card at the school library, a meal card at lunchtime by pre-loading the card with funds, and

bus pass credentials. It is also used for entry into certain activities or sporting events that occur beyond the school day. If a student comes to school without his or her ID, a generic ID is issued that does not come with any other privileges other than to identify them as an Ames student. Freshman Steven Caramelli said, “I think the IDs will be more useful next year when I am at the Main Campus,” noting the open campus privileges they have there. But added, “We need them to attend some sporting events such as the games against Farmingdale.”

Student Gianna Alvite enjoys the convenience of using the meal card for lunch, while Leah Johnston said she uses it for bus transportation. “We continually look for ways to improve the safety and security of our learning environment for our students,” said Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis, “and we are pleased that our parents have responded so positively to this initiative and that our students, though some were reluctant at first, have warmed up to the change and understand its benefits.”

The Countdown Begins By: Jamie Lynn Ryan One week until Christmas, and I can honestly say that not only is my tree still standing in the middle of my living room undecorated, but I have barely scratched the surface of my gift shopping. And by barely, I mean I spent the majority of our annual Black Friday trek into the madness that is Roosevelt Field splurging on myself. To date, my list consists of a collection of names to buy for, but no corresponding “perfect” presents as of yet. I don’t know what it is this year. Thanksgiving came and went, and the transition into the official holiday season seemed to go well enough. But then… there it remained, stuck between my own haphazard shopping spree and

the massive process of wading through the unpacked boxes of decorations strewn about my apartment. Oh, and then the Christmas cards I decided to order arrived, to be added to the growing pile of things to be done. I suppose I should get them in the mail this week. Of course, I realize I’m not alone in this scenario. There are those who claim to have their holiday preparations completed by Thanksgiving weekend; but we all know this is highly unrealistic. Just one quick look around the neighborhood tells me that there are plenty of people in the same boat as me, with freshly cut trees strapped to the tops of their cars, and half-strung lights hanging from their rafters. And the stores. We all know

there are enough last minute shoppers to make Black Friday look like just your average day at the mall. Take the male shopper from last week’s column, throw in everyone else who – like me – just hasn’t had the wherewithal to get it together in the three weeks that have elapsed since the last piece of pumpkin pie was consumed and, there you have it. A society of procrastinators. It’s funny, since this is the so-called “most wonderful time of the year” that everyone looks forward to; yet all we hear is what a hassle it is to accomplish the long list of tasks associated with it. When do we stop and enjoy this magical season, exactly? January maybe? At this rate, I might be done with my Christmas shopping by then.

A WITNESS TO HISTORY SUBMITTED BY: CATE DUNN, AGE 11, FAIRFIELD ELEMENTARY SCHOOL Have you ever witnessed history? I have - my school was given a Historical Marker when it turned 90. My school, Fairfield Elementary, has been around for 90 years! Fairfield Elementary was originally called the Massapequa Avenue School. On October 27th, 2015, I witnessed history. I have learned many things about Fairfield Elementary, and the Massapequa Avenue School, that I didn’t know before. In 1925, the original Massapequa Avenue was completed and ready for students to attend. About 100 students attended daily classes, but throughout the years, many more students enrolled in the school. Did you know that my school was originally an apple orchard? Now, my school has changed a lot. Most grades in my school have about 100 people, while the old school had about 100 in total. I have learned the history of my school.

As well as my school being built in the 1920’s, I have also researched the Roaring 20’s, in particular, an invention. One thing invented in the 1920’s was bubblegum. In 1928, Walter Diemer invented bubblegum. Believe it or not, it was actually invented accidentally! Walter Diemer was playing around with new gum recipes in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania at the Fleer Chewing Gum Company factory. He ended up with the perfect batch. It was different, less sticky. Have you ever wondered why bubblegum is pink? It is pink because pink was the only color food dye that Walter Diemer had on hand. I love gum and I have it almost every day. Walter Diemer’s accident turned into a brilliant invention. In addition to learning about an invention in the 1920’s, we also learned about an event. The event I researched was the tri-

state tornado of 1925. The massive tornado struck the people of Missouri, Illinois and Indiana. The damage of the storm was estimated at 16.5 million dollars. This horrible disaster changed the lives of many. Many homes were destroyed. Almost 700 people were killed and 2,027 were injured. I have experienced Hurricane Sandy, another natural disaster. It changed the lives of many, including mine. The forecast was for showers and cooler temperatures, but what they didn’t know was a tornado was coming. The Roaring 20’s was a rewarding time. Although things were difficult sometimes, everything was worth it in the end. If my school was not built, I wouldn’t be going to Fairfield today. If gum was not invented, I would not be able to blow the delicious bubbles. The 1920’s was a time when many life-changing things happened.

Rich Rossi of AMVETS Post 88 served as master of ceremonies. Following remarks from AMVETS Post 88 Commander James Owens of Massapequa, AMVETS Department of New York Commander Richard DeJesu of Oyster Bay, Presiding Officer Gregory and other elected officials, wreaths were laid and the Marine Corps League Sunrise Detachment of Massapequa fired a volley. “Taps” was played by Major Louis DiLeo, USB2 Chief Bugler for the New York Military Honor Guard, and the Amityville Highland Pipe Band performed “Amazing Grace.” The ceremony concluded with a benediction given by Chaplain Ed Maxwell and retiring of the colors led by Sergeant Major Robert Lane. Both men belong to AMVETS Post 88. “We cannot let this country forget the lessons of Pearl Harbor,” said Commander Owens. “We held this ceremony in a cemetery, a place of eternal peace, but we must strive for peace here and now. We cannot continue to allow race and color and creed to divide us. Hate should have no place in the world.” “To some Americans, particularly those born in the latter half of the 20th century, World War II may seem as distant as the Civil War,” said Commander DeJesu. “Pearl Harbor may not always seem relevant to our everyday lives, but as the philosopher George Santayana said, ‘Those who cannot remember the past are condemned to repeat

A c e r e m o n y commemorating the 74th anniversary of the December 7th, 1941 attack on Pearl Harbor was recently held at Long Island National Cemetery, the program was sponsored by AMVETS Memorial Post 88 of Massapequa. “My father is a World War II veteran, and December 7th, 1941 forever changed the direction of his life,” said Suffolk County Legislature Presiding Officer DuWayne Gregory. “The same is true for so many of his generation. Today we honor those who died at Pearl Harbor and those who felt the call to serve as a result. Suffolk County is home to the largest veteran population in the state, yet too often we forget how much they gave. I commend AMVETS Post 88 for working to ensure that we will forever remember all our veterans as well as that infamous day.”

was placed on the high honor roll throughout high school. “I think swimming helped me with time management and with getting my work done efficiently,” she said. Of her varsity swimming career, Cara said she enjoyed being able to act as a role model for younger swimmers on the team and liked how the common interest of swimming brought together students that may not have been friends otherwise. “We all worked hard on our team goals,” Cara said, “and Coach Rossi helped us reach those goals.” “Cara has encouraged and mentored the younger swimmers at meets and sets a great example of what it means to be a scholar athlete,” Rossi added. “I will miss having such a dominating force on the team and wish her the best as she transitions to the next level of her swimming and academic career.” As she looks to the future, Cara said she is thankful to those who supported her - her family, friends, teachers and administrators, and says she “looks forward to competing at the college level and improving as a person and a student.”

Centered on safety and prevention, students throughout the Massapequa School District were educated about HIV/AIDS with state-mandated, ageappropriate lessons during AIDS Awareness Week, November 30th-December 4th. The presentations were held in alignment with World AIDS Day, December 1st. At the middle and high school level, powerful interactive lessons on how the disease is contracted and what students can do to protect themselves were delivered by student Peer Educators under the guidance of physical education/health certified teacher Michael La Bella. Students learned important information about how the disease spreads and were given resources, such as where to get tested. “Our goal is to keep

students interested and engaged so we change up our skits to keep them fresh and relatable,” said Peer Educator Logan Suntzenich, a senior. At Massapequa High School-Ames Campus, two speakers from Love Heals, the Alison Gertz Foundation for AIDS Education, clearly stressed the importance of exercising good judgment, open communication and responsible behavior during intimate relationships to the freshmen student body. The speakers consisted of a woman who contracted the disease through a blood transfusion and unknowingly gave it to her husband, and a man who, back in college, went to support a friend by getting tested along with her, and found out that his friend didn’t have it but he did, though he did not yet have any symptoms.

Both speakers opened up the eyes of their adolescent audience about the harsh reality of living with a disease that has no cure and stressed the need for students to take responsibility for themselves. On the elementary level, students in the lower grades were taught basic hygiene practices and those in the upper grades learned about how the disease is difficult to contract and how to be compassionate to those infected. The lessons were reinforced with a takehome activity to facilitate discussions in the home. To spread awareness among the community, a public viewing of panels from the World AIDS Quilt was hosted at Massapequa High School where peer educators were on hand to answer questions for visitors.

Massapequa High School senior Cara Treble went into the state swimming finals at Ithaca College focused on victory. After placing second last year, she knew this was her time to shine. And she shined brightly - not only did she clinch the New York State Championship in the 200 freestyle, she broke the state record of 1:48:06 with her time of 1:48:01. “After last year, I returned with a vengeance,” Cara said. “I knew what I had to do.” The All-American Swimmer has trained hard for this moment. In addition to competing on the varsity swim team since ninth grade, she’s been waking up at 5:25 a.m. four days a week to swim for an hour before school, 2 1/2 hours every day after school and 3 1/2 hours on Saturdays with the Long Island Aquatic Club at Eisenhower Park’s Aquatic Center.

“Cara’s dedication to swimming was unmatched by anyone on the varsity swim team,” said Coach Brian Rossi. “When it came to meets, she would swim any event I asked her to without hesitation.” Cara, who earned the Joe Farrell Award for Stand Out Senior Athletic Performance this year, comes from a family of swimmers and has been competing since she was eight years old. Her mother was a lifeguard and her father an avid swimmer when they first met at a pool, Cara said. Her sister Molly, a 2014 Massapequa High School graduate, was a two-time state champion who competes for Notre Dame University. Her younger brother, Erik, a sophomore, plays baseball. Cara and her sister share the goal of making it to the Olympic Trials in July and having the opportunity to compete alongside the greatest swimmers in the country. Next year, she’ll be on the roster of Penn State University’s Division I team while pursuing a degree in bio-behavioral health. Strong academically as well as athletically, the USA Scholar-Athlete is a member of National Honor Society, takes Advanced Placement classes in biology and calculus, and

Bringing the Wizard to Life

Having opened on Friday, November 13th and running through Sunday, November 15th, the greatest family musical of all time made its way down the Yellow Brick Road to

the Bayway Arts Center. Family Residences and Essential Enterprises, Inc. (FREE) FREE Players, in association with the Broad Hollow Theater Company proudly presented their

adaptation of the beloved classic The Wizard of Oz. The FREE Players treated the audience to a familyfriendly musical where they joined Dorothy Gale of Kansas as she dreamt of

what lies over the rainbow. Along the way they met the Scarecrow, Tin Man and Lion as they were taken on a magical journey through the Land of Oz, complete with a wizard, witches and winged monkeys. At the end of their trip they discovered the importance of friendship, and realized there really is no place like home. The FREE Players is a one-of-a-kind theatre troupe within FREE embracing the talents of performers of all abilities. The FREE Players dedicate their energies to the arts through instruction in dance, drama, music, technical theater, and fine arts. Through the arts, individuals have made

great strides in improving their interpersonal skills, as well as the ability to multitask, focus, and take direction, all of which helps them move towards their goal of being independent contributing members of society. The annual musical fundraiser supports opportunities for the men and women who receive services from FREE. Proceeds from this year’s fundraiser will go to enhancing current opportunities and developing innovative community programing alternatives. FREE entered into a new partnership with the Bayway Arts Center where the theater will receive

valuable help with their day-to-day operations by the men and women supported by FREE providing these individuals with the opportunity to explore and develop their full vocational potential.
