Oyster Bay Town Supervisor John Venditto is pleased to announce that the Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Holiday on Ice Show will be held on Saturday, December 19th, starting at 4:30 p.m. at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center. Students from the Town’s Ice Skating Program will present a captivating skating exhibition to celebrate the holiday season. Admission is free. “This highly anticipated event has become a holiday tradition for many Town residents and is truly special evening of family fun,” Supervisor Venditto said. “The students in the Town’s ice skating program are amazingly talented and are sure to entertain the audience. I recently came upon a column I wrote just about a decade ago for this very space, detailing that strange phenomenon that occurs around this time of year – the annual appearance of the species known as “the male shopper.” Following is an excerpt… Men can do Christmas shopping for 25 relatives on December 24th in 25 minutes.

A truer statement has never been made. One of two things happens when men make their one trip

to the store each year – they either A) pick out something “useful” like an appliance – toaster, vacuum, the big-screen TV they always wanted; or B) buy everything in sight to make up for their lack of shopping prowess during the rest of the year. Once the purchases are made, there’s the small matter of gift-wrapping. Some men don’t even attempt the impossible and instead settle for a large bow on its own; others give it a whirl and wind up with a mass of crumpled wrapping paper, covered in tape, with only about 75% of the box actually, you know, wrapped.

I used to think it was just my father who waited until Christmas Eve to shop, until I joined him one year and witnessed firsthand the wall-to-wall lines of men with a similar problem – how to complete all their shopping and still make it home in time for the holiday dinner. So, this Christmas Eve, if you happen to be out making some last minute purchases, don’t stress out – those men standing on line next to you are just getting started. Plus, they still have to wrap. Many people judge how I look and assume things about me that is totally wrong. I have lots of tales to tell. Even the people who think they know me aren’t even close. Let’s begin at the beginning. When I was born, I was named Fernando*. My mom was happy that she had another son. I was her third. Shortly after, my father started abusing my two brothers and was sent to jail. At the time, I was too young to know what was going on. Later, when I found out about it, I hated that guy. I don’t even consider him a good father because of what he has done. I learned to hate my own

name because I was named after him. I decided to use my creativity to rename myself. When I tell my tale to others and they laugh, do I feel bad? No, because words are words and they don’t affect me. My talent for writing was sparked by a close friend named Amy*. She is very kind toward others and a little shy. We have been friends for a long time; we respect and trust each other to the max. We both share the love of writing. At first I felt writing was useless work. After a couple of tries, I gave in and found it fun to write. I think it’s unique to express myself in words. My hobbies, besides writing,

include playing video games and streaming on Twitch. Like most people, I wish I could change some of the things that I have done. People ask me what I want to do when I grow up. Some people say, “You’ll be a bum on the streets.” I don’t listen to them because they’re the same ones who think drugs are good. After everything I’ve learned, there is no better mystery than life itself. What’s the point of living? It’s to achieve your life’s goals. Rallying the Community For the third consecutive year, Massapequa High School Sophomore Veronica Wetzel organized a holiday food drive in her community that will not only provide a Thanksgiving meal to hundreds of families in need, but will also show these families, who have been hit the hardest by the challenging economy, just how much they are cared for. Wetzel doesn’t take anything for granted. While she enjoys a big Thanksgiving dinner with her family every year, she knows that there are plenty of people who are far less fortunate – even in her own community. That’s why the 10th grader organizes an annual food drive to benefit her church’s food pantry. And with the help of her generous neighbors, it’s always a success. This year, the teen collected enough food to feed at least 200 families. “I just collect the food,” said Wetzel modestly. “It’s my neighbors who were amazingly generous. “Some families donated several grocery bags of food or crates of canned soup. One neighbor donated bags of food AND a 20-pound bag of rice! I was blown away by the support and compassion my neighbors showed.” Wetzel added that one family even included a

recipe in its donation bag. “It was awesome!” a positive impact on our community.” No matter how big or small the donation, each one One week before the November 21st collection, Wetzel helped make a positive impact. And Rosemary Graziano, went door-to-door to the 400 homes within a half-mile director of the Church of St. William the Abbot Roman radius of her Ensign Drive home, and dropped a flier in each mailbox. The flier provided a list of non-perishable food ideas that could help make a Thanksgiving dinner for a family in need. One week later, with help from her father Ralph Wetzel, she again went door-to-door, collecting shopping bags and cartons full of food, which they piled into the family SUV. “It’s so heart-warming to see the neighbors come together,” said Susan Wetzel, Veronica’s mother. “In the week leading up to the collection, we even found bags of food on our front steps because some people were afraid they would forget to put out the bags the following Saturday. The holiday season is a great time to give back to the community and be thankful for what you have. This is exactly what the Massapequa High School DECA Club did in a week-long community service project, which took place from November 16th through November 23rd. DECA, which is an organization that puts students in real life scenarios to prepare them for the real world of marketing, finance, hospitality and management, partnered with Sole Survivors, a program started by MHS senior Jake Rosenblum

about three years ago. The program provides new or gently used sneakers to children and teenagers in need at the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. In a week, the club was able to collect over 75 pairs of shoes through the Sole Survivors collection bin in the main lobby of Massapequa High School. The shoes were then brought to the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. “I think this was a great opportunity for the club the help the community and to help out people at the Long Island Coalition for the Homeless. I hope we can continue to help out the
