Town of Oyster Bay residents will soon be able to enjoy outdoor ice skating at the Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa) and Syosset-Woodbury Community Park ice rinks, when the 20152016 season officially begins the day after Thanksgiving on Friday, November 27th, . Once again, Town residents can enjoy this popular winter sport at prices that make it a great value for your recreation dollar. General admission for Oyster Bay Town residents for two-hour public skating sessions at both rinks will be $2.00 for ages two to four, $4.00 for ages five through 17, $5.00 for ages 18 and older, $2.00 for senior citizens 60 and older and $3.00 for Town veterans, volunteer firefighters and auxiliary police with identification. For non-Town residents, the general admission will be $3.00 for ages two to four, $7.00 for ages five to

17, $8.00 for ages 18 and older, $4.00 for seniors and $3.00 for veterans, volunteer firefighters and auxiliary police with identification. Both Oyster Bay Town resident and non-Town resident children under two will be admitted free. Special discount books consisting of 10 tickets will be available. A discount book for ages five to 17 years will be $30.00 for Oyster Bay Town residents and $55.00 for non-Town residents. A book for ages 18 and older will be $35.00 for Oyster Bay Town residents and $65.00 for non-Town residents. In addition, ice rinks may be rented by resident groups for $225.00 per hour. Non-resident groups can rent the rinks for $325.00 per hour. Charters will be available when public sessions are not scheduled. Requests for group charters can be scheduled by calling the Town of Oyster Bay

Ice Skating Center at 516.433.7465, ext. 8231. The skate shop will be open during all public sessions for renting skates at $4.00 per pair, per session. Discount books for skate rentals will be available for $35.00. Tradition: the transmission of customs or beliefs from generation to generation, or the fact of being passed on in this way. And so closes another Thanksgiving, filled with family, food and fond memories sure to be reflected upon in the coming years. By the time you read this, most of society will have already moved on to Christmas shopping and decorating and planning their next round of feasting and festivities. For me, as the clock strikes midnight, signaling the dawn of “Black Friday” and the close of autumnal activities, once and for all, I choose to savor this particular occasion just a bit longer. The essence of Thanksgiving is, after all, the true spirit of any holiday season

– or at least it should be. Too often, we become so caught up in the commercial clichés that we fail to truly appreciate these special moments. Just earlier today, as my own family reminisced upon occasions gone by, the recurring theme was family, friends and loved ones. The cast of characters may change from year to year, but the sentiment remains the same. While every holiday may not unfold perfectly from beginning to end – despite the “flawless” façade portrayed by most peoples’ Instagram and Facebook posts – they each hold their own place in the grand scheme of life. Time, and tradition, marches on, whether we like it or not. How we choose to spend that time will dictate the memories we make along the way and the fondness

On Tuesday, October 27th, 2015, I was a witness to history. Fairfield School turned 90 and I was there! Our school was once called Massapequa Avenue School. Some of the things I learned about school in the early days was that if you looked outside, you would see the people playing polo. Polo is when you are on a horse and you have a certain type of stick and a wooden ball. Also, if you want to play baseball at recess, you have to be picked to play. Sometimes, you do not get picked or there is no room

for the kids to play. The invention that inspired me the most was the Band-Aid, which was made by Earle Dickson. He made the Band-Aid in the 1920’s in Highland Park, New Jersey. It is important because there would be a lot of people with cuts if not for him. It happened when Earle Dickson placed gauck on his wife’s cuts and they got better. I can relate to the Band-Aid because I always get hurt. The event the inspired me the most was 90’s Jazz. This took place in New Orleans, Louisiana. It is important

because, without 90’s Jazz, there would be no Jazz music today. It happened when the military people came back and they “wanted life to be light and happy.” I am connected to 90’s Jazz because I play the flute. I love Jazz, and my nana was born in the 1920’s and she loved Jazz. As you can see, the 1920’s was an inspiring time because they gave us a lot of new inventions, like eskimo pie, the traffic light, the jukebox and the bulldozer. We still use and eat these inventions today. So what inspires you about the 1920’s?

When the Macy’s Great American Band marches across your television screen while viewing the Thanksgiving Day parade, pay close attention to the piccolo players. Among them will be Massapequa High School junior Courtney Conkling. She will be part of the only band in the parade that brings together young musical talent from schools across the country. About five students are selected from each state. How did she do it? She applied on the band’s website and sent a video of herself playing the piccolo. After more paperwork and an effort to raise about $1,500 for parade expenses, the rest is history.

Although the parade is on Thursday, Courtney will be there days before for rehearsals and a bit of sightseeing with other band members. During the parade, the band will play a New York-themed medley and “Dance with Me Tonight” by Ollie Murs. “I’m really excited to be among musicians that are as dedicated and enthusiastic about music as I am,” said Courtney. “Music is my passion.” Courtney was named an All-State musician by the New York State School Music Association (NYSSMA) and has earned six All-County designations. She is a member of the Massapequa High School Marching

Band, the Wind Ensemble, Jazz Band and plans to play in the Pit Orchestra for this year’s high school musical. Outside of school, she has been a member of the Gemini Youth Orchestra, which plays at Lincoln Center and other local venues, for the past five years. “Courtney Conkling is one of the most motivated young ladies I have had the pleasure to work with,” said Massapequa High School Band Director Mark Stempel. “This young lady loves to learn and excels on her instrument. In addition to music, Courtney carries a rigorous academic course load, including Advanced Placement (AP) classes in Physics, English Language Arts and U.S. History, and is on the Principal’s List for academic excellence. She competes in Odyssey of the Mind, which challenges students to creatively problem solve by completing a series of specific tasks, and helped bring her team to the state competition twice. She also took on the leadership role of Activities Coordinator for Student Council for two years.

Sharing Insight

Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) spoke with Massapequa High School students in the Advanced Placement Government and Politics classes, offering insight into the most pressing issues facing our country today. A U.S. congressman for 23 years, King is a member of the Homeland Security Committee and Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence Committee. He also serves on the Financial Services Committee and Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. “I am the only member of Congress that sits on the Intelligence Committee and the Homeland Security Committee, which means I am alerted to threats that are coming from outside of the country and inside of the country,” he said. “This gives me a very unique look at the terror threat, which I think is the main crisis we have to face in the country today.” King spoke about the economy, which was devastated in 2008, and the slow, tedious process to come out of that, as well as the impact it has had on New York. He also discussed the tough process of securing funding for people impacted by 9-11 and Superstorm Sandy, citing his efforts to reinstate the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act so that people who develop illnesses related to the attacks get proper health benefits. The act had a five-year term that

recently expired. But overriding everything, he said, is the threat of terrorism. “Today there are any number of Al Qaeda affiliates,” King said. “They are branching out…. At any given time, there are threats against us, and New York and Long Island are the number one targets in the world. There were four or five Al Qaeda operatives arrested on Long Island and 70 arrests in the United States since the beginning of the year… That’s why I spend most of my time on counterterrorism… working with police.. NYPD…Nassau and Suffolk county police and the FBI to help keep us safe.” King also spoke about the Republican Party and the upcoming presidential election, as well as the resignation of the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, and the appointment of former congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as the new speaker. He also gave insight as to how elected officials work together, saying that those from New York all work well together to get things done. After his discussion, he opened the floor to questions from students who prepared their remarks by watching and analyzing newscasts and videos involving the congressman. They asked questions about the presidential election, how much time he spends in Washington D.C., his stance on marijuana legalization and his greatest accomplishment. On the

election, King explained how difficult it is to win a party nomination and a presidential election, based on the varied populations that come out to vote for each, and discussed the tremendous amount of resources one needs to run for president, a reason why he didn’t put his hat in the ring. He said he spends about 40 weeks, four days a week, in the nation’s capital, and he is opposed to legalizing marijuana, except for medical reasons if it can be regulated, citing the serious drug abuse epidemic in suburbia in many part of the country. His proudest achievement, he said, is his work on the original Zadroga healthcare bill and securing homeland security funding for New York, which accounts for millions of dollars to keep the cities safe. “We are honored to once again have Congressman King address our students and provide first-hand knowledge of our political system and the issues that face our country today,” said social studies teacher Daniel Bachman, who coordinated King’s visit. “His discussion, in particular, provides an opportunity for our students to obtain a deeper understanding of terms and topics that are given on the AP exam, and his expertise in terrorism proved timely as students approached the recent terror attack on Paris with a new understanding.”

Fairfield Elementary School kindergartners had a blast exploring and learning about colors in ways that enhanced their skills across the curriculum. They used math skills to identify and sort items of a specific color, and explored literature, poetry, songs, and color-related projects

to reinforce the different colors being taught. Each day, students were given an essential question to answer such as, “What is the color red?” Students used higher-level thinking as they wrote their answers. They also became scientists when experimenting with mixing colors like red and yellow to make orange.

“It was so exciting to see each color come alive as the students and staff wore each color of the day,” said Fairfield Principal Lori Dano. “Color week extended beyond kindergarten as the whole school participated in the wearing of the colors.”
