“Tis the time of year to be thankful, and I’d like to take this opportunity to acknowledge my Human, as I’ve been told by many fans that I am far too tough on her, what with my lack of fancy accommodations and inconsistent feeding schedule. I suppose I have been a bit harsh in my criticisms. Us bettas tend to have one-track minds, you know. In truth, I do appreciate the love and attention she shows me – and she has been better of late with notifying me when dinner is going to be delayed. Speaking of, I hear there’s a large meal coming up – a Thanksgiving, I believe it’s called – where humans

gather ‘round to eat a large stuffed bird. What a disturbing concept. I sure hope there’s no fish on the menu! I do hope I get an invite and my very own place setting though. Day after day, I watch my human unload groceries, chop vegetables, prepare dinner… and then it disappears into the dining room, never to be seen again. All that food, and no leftovers for Buddy? Maybe if I sit at the table and stare at their plates, someone will drop a morsel into my bowl. One can only hope. There I go again, with my culinary obsession. Tiny brain, eyes-bigger-thanstomach. On October 27th, Fairfield School, also known as Massapequa Avenue School, turned ninety. The fifth and sixth grade gathered together and learned about our school and how special it truly is. At the end of the ceremony, the historical society unveiled an historical marker. Some things I learned about the early days of our school are: there weren’t houses surrounding our school like today; there were open fields with cows. I also learned the kids didn’t ride on the bus to school; they walked, rode a bike or road in a carriage pulled by a horse, if they were lucky. Fairfield School only had one room that held multiple grades. The last thing I learned was a classroom could have up to 30 children but only have one teacher.

In the 1920’s, Sebastian Hilton invented a contraption that changed the life of many children. This contraption was invented in Chicago, where Sebastian and his mathematical father lived. Mr. Hilton invented the jungle gym! Sebastian’s father wanted to build a play structure that kids could play on and learn about x, y and z coordinates at the same time. This invention is important because the jungle gym is an object enjoyed by many children. I can connect to the invention of the jungle gym because every time I go to the park, I play on the three dimensional figure and it entertains many kids. In the 1920’s, the stock market crashed and many people lost all their life savings. As a result of this, people

started to live in Hoovervilles. People made houses out of boxes and other scrap material they found. Hoovervilles were found all over the country, but some major Hoovervilles were found in St.Louis, Missouri, Seattle and Washington. This event took place in the 1920’s and ended in 1929. This event is important because many people were homeless for many years because of the stock market. I can connect to this because whenever I go to the city, I see homeless people living in cardboard boxes and this reminds me of Hoovervilles. As you can see, the 1920’s was a challenging time because of the crash in the stock market. This major event will be put down in history just like our school was on October 27th.

Sharing Insight Rep. Peter King (R-Seaford) spoke with Massapequa High School students in the Advanced Placement Government and Politics classes, offering insight into the most pressing issues facing our country today. A U.S. congressman for 23 years, King is a member of the Homeland Security Committee and Chairman of the Sub-Committee on Counterterrorism and Intelligence Committee. He also serves on the Financial Services Committee and Permanent Select Committee on Intelligence. “I am the only member of Congress that sits on the Intelligence Committee and the Homeland Security Committee, which means I am alerted to threats that are coming from outside of the country and inside of the country,” he said. “This gives me a very unique look at the terror threat, which I think is the main crisis we have to face in the country today.” King spoke about the economy, which was devastated in 2008, and the slow, tedious process to come out of that, as well as the impact it has had on New York. He also discussed the tough process of securing funding for people impacted by 9-11 and Superstorm Sandy, citing his efforts to reinstate the Zadroga 9/11 Health and Compensation Act so that people who develop illnesses related to the attacks get proper health benefits. The act had a five-year term that recently expired. But overriding everything, he said, is the threat of terrorism. “Today there are any number of Al Qaeda affiliates,” King said. “They are branching out…. At any given time, there are threats against us, and New York and

Long Island are the number one targets in the world. There were four or five Al Qaeda operatives arrested on Long Island and 70 arrests in the United States since the beginning of the year… That’s why I spend most of my time on counterterrorism…working with police.. NYPD…Nassau and Suffolk county police and the FBI to help keep us safe.” King also spoke about the Republican Party and the upcoming presidential election, as well as the

resignation of the Speaker of the House, John Boehner, and the appointment of former congressman Paul Ryan of Wisconsin as the new speaker. He also gave insight as to how elected officials work together, saying that those from New York all work well together to get things done. After his discussion, he opened the floor to questions from students who prepared their remarks by watching and analyzing newscasts and videos involving the

congressman. They asked questions about the presidential election, how much time he spends in Washington D.C., his stance on marijuana legalization and his greatest accomplishment. On the election, King explained how difficult it is to win a party nomination and a presidential election, based on the varied populations that come out to vote for each, and discussed the tremendous amount of resources one needs to run for president, a reason why he didn’t put his hat in the ring. He said he spends about 40 weeks, four days a week, in the nation’s capital, and he is opposed to legalizing marijuana, except for medical reasons if it can be regulated, citing the serious drug abuse epidemic in suburbia in many part of the country. His proudest achievement, he said, is his work on the original Zadroga healthcare bill and securing homeland security funding for New York, which accounts for millions of dollars to keep the cities safe. “We are honored to once again have Congressman King address our students and provide first-hand knowledge of our political system and the issues that face our country today,” said social studies teacher Daniel Bachman, who coordinated King’s visit. “His discussion, in particular, provides an opportunity for our students to obtain a deeper understanding of terms and topics that are given on the AP exam, and his expertise in terrorism proved timely as students approached the recent terror attack on Paris with a new understanding.”

Massapequa Pays Tribute In tributes streaming with patriotic songs, heartfelt speeches and standing ovations, students and staff in the Massapequa School District showed their gratitude for military veterans and active-duty soldiers, who later sat down with Berner Middle School students to share their experiences during “Take a Vet to School Day.” Tributes at Alfred G. Berner Middle School, and Lockhart and McKenna elementary schools reflected on the sacrifices made by those who served and the impact their service has had on the country today. Students in red, white and blue recited historical facts about Veterans Day and sang patriotic songs. Military roll calls of honor for living and deceased veterans were conducted, followed by the playing of the funeral dirge “Taps.” At McKenna, Boy Scouts Michael Augello and Lucas Marsh folded and presented a flag to the family of local hero Army Captain Gregory Durso, and a tribute was made in his honor by sixth grader Brandy Mener. McKenna kindergartners also showed their gratitude by singing “You’re a Grand Old Flag” as they waved little American flags in their hands, and thanking the veterans for their service. Commander Richard Begandy, of Veterans of Foreign Wars Post 7763 in Massapequa Park, said of veterans, “These heroes come from all walks of life but they have these things in common: courage, pride, determination, selflessness, integrity and dedication to duty to serve a cause larger than themselves….It is important to

remember our forces are protecting us 24/7…sometimes unnoticed as we enjoy the security they have provided…. Our debt to these heroes cannot be repaid but our gratitude and respect should last forever.” In addition to a formal ceremony, Berner Middle School hosted “Take a Vet to School Day,” where

veterans, armed with maps, photos, medals and other memorabilia, discussed their experiences with small groups of students in the library. Now in its ninth year, the event has grown exponentially from a handful of veterans to more than 75 today. Social studies teacher Noreen Miller brought it to Berner with a group of veterans from American Legion Post 1066 in Massapequa. Among them was her father, Jack Ryan, an Army veteran who served in the Vietnam War.

“They had such a great time, and the kids were so respectful that more and more veterans wanted to participate,” Ryan said. This year, as an added dynamic to the event, students were able to FaceTime with Army Pvt. Nicole DiGregorio, a 2008 Massapequa High School graduate stationed in Kuwait. Through a question-and-answer session, they gained a contemporary perspective of what it’s like to serve in the military today. “Take a Vet to School Day” is a nationwide program developed by The History Channel which includes a documentary about Veterans Day as well as free resources for teachers that are available on www.veterans.com. Students research and write about Veterans Day in their classrooms before entering the program and complete follow-up assignments, including writing letters to those in active duty. “To have face-to-face time with veterans and hear their stories is something you cannot get in a textbook,” Miller said. In other tributes, East Lake second graders had discussions about veterans and wrote letters of gratitude to those serving in the United States military. Letters were sent to a VA hospital and the non-profit organization, “Thanks a Million,” which distributes them to U.S. troops serving all over the world.

The VFW supports programs which help raise awareness of the sacrifices that our nation’s veterans have made. As well, the VFW promotes citizenship, education, volunteerism and youth programs. The POW/MIA Remembrance Chair that Massapequa American Dr. Paulis was kind enough to donate, honors the brave veterans who were captured or Legion Post 1066 selected lost in their service to protect the country. Mighty Maya’s Story

Dear Community, I am writing this letter to ask for your prayers and any help you can give to beautiful “Mighty” Maya, who was born June 17th, 2015 with a rare neurological disorder called Hemimegalence phaly. This disorder causes catastrophic epileptic seizures that, in time, could severely debilitate Maya’s cognition and even kill her. Anti-seizure medi cation will not work to control her seizures. The only way to help Maya live a productive and fulfilling life is to have her undergo radical surgery, a hemisphe rectomy, that disconnects the “bad” half of her brain. Maya’s parents are asking for donations to be used toward the cost of everything associated with Maya’s journey, from travel, to medical needs, to physical and occup ational therapy, among other expenses. We know that Mighty Maya is stron g enough for the challenges ahead and we thank you for helping her get there by either spreading the word and donating to her cause. At the age of only four months, Maya had her brain surgery on October 28th, to disconnect the “bad” half of her brain , at Boston Children’s Hospital. After being in ICU for a number of days, Maya is now recovering in inpatient care, where she started receiving physi cal therapy soon after her brain surgery. I am writing this letter to ask you for your help for Mighty Maya and her parents.
