What better way to kick off the Thanksgiving holiday than with a column by yours truly, everyone’s favorite fish. It’s been quite some time since my last contribution, and readers have been writing in to inquire as to my whereabouts, my wellbeing and the like. Well, I’m still swimming; perhaps a little more frayed and frazzled of late, but such is life. I’m happy to report that my Human finally got on board with the whole concept of heating my suite, making for a nice cozy atmosphere to spend the chillier months. You know us tropical fish – anything under 78º and I’m looking for a sweater.

Speaking of, I seemed to be growing my own little fur coat of sorts over the last week or so, as my fins began sprouting tiny tufts of white fuzz. Apparently, this is not supposed to happen, and so my Human decided to overhaul my entire tank and redecorate with new gravel and a pretty little – emphasis on little – plant. My favorite feature of all, though, would have to be the tiny “betta hammock” which now hangs from the side, essentially a leaf attached to a suction cup. I suppose this was designed to replace my former, much larger, luxurious plant which I used to use as a pillow of sorts. I must say, though, it’s quite

inferior. Too straight, too shiny and slippery…but the suction cup, that’s the greatest. How I do love to sit perched atop it, resting my weary fins after a long day of swimming laps. After a few days of fishy antibiotics, my little fuzz problem seems to have gone away. Donation Received Family Service League (FSL), a Long Island based non-profit human service organization, is proud to announce that it has been awarded a $30,000 grant from Paddlers for Humanity to support its Community Behavioral Health Collaborative (CBHC). This program advances early recognition and identification of potential emotional disorders in children on Long Island’s South Fork through expanded screening initiatives and follow-up services for parents whose children have possible risk concerns.

The CBHC creates a continuum of services beginning with early identification of children with potential emotional disorders, interventions that rely on parent/ family/school/community involvement through supportive and educational programs. The continuum also includes care coordination and treatment for those whose needs have progressed to more serious levels of emotional disturbance. Other CBHC services include: increased psychiatric and social work services in East Hampton and Southampton to include on-site services

in both high schools and increased clinic capacity, Mental Health First Aid Training to promote early identification through a network of trained community members, and workshops for residents, school faculty, and community professionals that will address children’s mental health issues. “Family Service League is grateful for the support of Paddlers for Humanity”, said Karen Boorshtein, FSL President & CEO, “These services are essential to the well-being of children and families who call Eastern Long Island home.”

Not until now has an official Honor Flight been organized out of New York City, where the population of WWII veterans is estimated to be in the thousands. “Of all the wars in our nation’s history, it is World War II that threatened the very existence of America as a culturally diverse

and free society,” added Maher. “According to the Veterans Administration, an estimated 430 WWII Veterans die each day nationally. Sparking Connections Librarians from all three Long Island BOCES converged at the UPsky Hotel in Hauppauge for The Long Island School Library Systems 3rd Regional Institute. This unique event was made possible through the collaborative efforts of Carl Vitevitch, Eastern Suffolk BOCES; Sara Kardasz, Western Suffolk BOCES, and Donna Rosenblum, Nassau BOCES. It was a day for professional development and so much more. Attending an event of this magnitude allows teacher librarians from across Nassau and Suffolk to share ideas, network, learn from each other, keep up

with technology, and find new concepts and learning tools to enhance education. With twenty breakout sessions to choose from like The Compassionate Maker: Creating a Culture of Caring, Got Books? Bring them to Life! and To Your Health!, attendees learned hands on character education activities, how to expand students reading experiences, and acquired FREE resources for teaching and learning about the human body, health, and wellness. Eighteen vendors including FactCite, Scholastic, OverDrive, Soundzabound, Infobase, Follett, edu.buncee, and Delaney, lined the

hallways of the hotel offering solutions, creative inspiration, and innovative learning tools. The teacher librarians shared stories and examples of the “voice of their library” with Keynote speaker Shannon McClintock Miller via Padlet. Padlet is free software to create an online bulletin board to display information. Shannon and the attendees found the SPARK Connections presentation relatable because it wove the information and stories shared on Padlet to enhance the concepts of savvy, progressive, advanced, radical, and knowledgeable.

Of the over 16 million service men and women who served our country during World War II, the Department of Veterans Affairs estimates that only about 660,000 are still alive, with an average age of well over 90. In NY State, surviving World War II veterans number less than 100,000. To honor these veterans, the first-ever Big Apple Honor Flight will take place on April 29th from JFK Airport to Washington DC. Founders of the upstate nonprofit, Hudson Valley Honor Flight, are bringing this program to the Big Apple for the first time ever and will take NYC’s Greatest Generation, veterans of World War

Taste of Democracy They might not have been able to vote for president for real, but students in Christine Ross’ first-grade class at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District still were active participants in the election. The children spent time learning about the election process and the candidates.

For an election activity, each student made a poster, “If I Were President,” and wrote a paragraph about what they would do if elected to the nation’s highest office. Ideas included helping the homeless, building schools in other countries, and giving everyone more time to sleep.

The students also participated in the district’s mock election. Ms. Ross boxed off a computer in the room to make students feel like they were stepping into a voting booth as they cast their online ballots. As a school, Fairfield picked the winning candidate, with 62 percent of students voting for Donald Trump.

Making a Connection Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District welcomed nearly 80 veterans on November 14th who shared stories about their service with students. The annual Take a Veteran to School Day program was an effort to bring history alive for seventh- and eighthgraders. The day began with a schoolwide assembly where students heard from Navy veteran and past VFW commander Richard Begandy, who told students that if they see a veteran, they should stop and say “thank you” because those are “two little words that mean a

lot.” Assistant Principal Theresa Donohue, who said the ceremony was meaningful to her as the daughter of a Vietnam veteran, read the names of all guests in attendance. The veterans came from American Legion Post 1066 and VFW Massapequa Park Post 7763, or were related to a student or staff member. Throughout the day, veterans visited social studies classrooms and met with students in small groups. They represented all different branches of the military and different wartime and peacetime eras. In addition to talking about their experiences,

of November 14th. Students in first through sixth grade are participating in classroom spelling bees, with each class winner receiving a certificate and each grade winner earning a trophy. The fourth-, fifth- and

FUN FIELD TRIP - Massapequa’s troop 776 had a good time over the weekend. Everyone survived the cold. McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District marked Veterans Day by keeping one tradition alive and starting what administrators hope will become a new custom. The school hosted its annual Veterans Day ceremony on November 9th, welcoming dozens of local veterans. Members of the Massapequa Park VFW provided a color guard, who stood at the front of the auditorium as chorus students sang “The StarSpangled Banner.” Students spoke about the history of Veterans Day and Assistant Principal

Laura McConnell read a roll call, which included the names of all veterans in attendance, as well as living and deceased veterans from McKenna families. The ceremony also included the playing of taps, folding of the flag, and performance of “You’re a Grand Old Flag” by kindergartners. The auditorium was adorned in red, white and blue ribbons and bunting, and patriotic paintings were displayed depicting the flag, Liberty Bell and a bald eagle. Secondand third-graders made drawings and wrote letters to thank veterans for

their service. Principal Dr. Amanda Lowry reminded all students that Veterans Day is not just a day off from school, but a time to reflect on the sacrifices made by others. This year, McKenna introduced its first Field of Honor. American flags were set up on the front lawn of the school, in partnership with the Massapequa Kiwanis Club. Families can purchase a tag to be affixed to a flag in honor of a veteran. Dr. Lowry said that it is just another way for the school community to honor its local heroes and wants it to become an annual display.

They learned many things about the Native American culture. The children were able to participate in the Three Sisters Garden. According the Iroquois legend, corn, beans and squash are three inseparable sisters who only grow and thrive together! Growing a Three Sisters Garden is a wonderful way to feel more connected to the history of our land, regardless of our ancestry.

Grant Awarded On behalf of the Advisory Committee to All for the East End Fund (AFTEE), the Long Island Community Foundation (LICF), has awarded a $2,500 grant to Family Service League (FSL) as one of the recipients of the AFTEE Building Stronger Neighborhood Program.

AFTEE organizers have set up the fund with the intention of distributing grants to various nonprofits working to better the quality of life in the five East End townships. This grant will assist FSL in funding the Community Behavioral Health Collaborative

(CBHC) which supports youth mental health programs for children residing on the East End of Long Island. The program includes workshops for town residents and education professionals that will address children’s mental health issues, and

Walking for Wishes Making a difference in someone else’s life begins with a single step. That’s the belief at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, where a 25-year tradition of supporting the Make-A-Wish Foundation continues. This year’s fundraiser began on November 15th with an after-school walkathon. Although rain moved the event indoors, it did nothing to

dampen the enthusiasm of students, staff and parents who marched through the hallways. Over the next month, students will seek pledges from family and friends. The money will be tallied and a donation will be presented to the organization at the school’s annual Make-AWish concert before the holiday break. Principal Stephen Scarallo said Lockhart typically raises more than $3,000 for the

organization which grants wishes to sick children. Students at the school will vote on a child’s wish they would like to fulfill. “I think it’s a nice thing to do and helping others is always the best way to go,” said fifth-grader Briana Neary, who participated in the walkathon. Added third-grader Luke Bartolo, “You can make a child’s dream come true. We want to make them have a nice life.”

Project Zero Teachers from the Massapequa School District who participated in Harvard University’s educational workshop Project Zero Classroom over the summer recently met with actor and Massapequa alumnus Billy Baldwin to discuss how the experience has enhanced their teaching and is benefitting their students. Mr. Baldwin is one of the founders of the Massapequa Community Fund, which funds the experience for educators along with district support. The weeklong workshop equips

teachers with the tools needed to create innovative learning environments that ultimately help students become critical, independent thinkers. About 10 to 15 teachers have annually participated in Project Zero over the past six years, allowing educators to share and spread its methodology and track its effects on student performance. Kim Kelly, a first-grade teacher at Birch Lane Elementary School who has attended the training three times, shared with Baldwin how Project

Zero has benefitted her students. She said the results are evidenced through improved student achievement. “It has not only been transformative for me as an educator, but the evidence of my students’ learning that occurs organically has been quantified,” she said. “Additionally, I have modeled several ‘Thinking Routines’ for colleagues, and thus, Project Zero planted a seed in my mind’s garden that I in turn replanted in others.”

The Nassau County Veteran Service Agency is an advocate for veterans, their spouses and dependents. They assist veterans with pensions, compensation, education and training, vocational rehabilitation, benefits for survivors, burial and hospital care.

The LIHSA students who earned this year’s Scholar-Artist Merit Award are dance students Alexandra Ferrugia (Massapequa UFSD), Jared Stern (Levittown UFSD) and Sydney Weltman (Bellmore-Merrick CHSD). “All of us at LIHSA are proud of these students and their wonderful achievements,” said Interim Principal Jack Lenson. “It is our mission to empower young artists to achieve their full potential, both in the classroom and in their chosen disciplines.
