Pink Power The power of pink took over Massapequa School District as students, staff and the school community came together to raise funds for Breast Cancer Awareness Month. The effort topped off with the girls volleyball DIG PINK fundraising match, which had the biggest turnout ever in the event’s eight-year history. In pure DIG PINK fashion, the high school gymnasium was transformed into a kaleidoscope of pink as both the Junior Varsity and Varsity teams played against Syosset with pink volleyballs for an audience of pink-dressed spectators, many holding pink signs or blowup noisemakers. And the Chiefs did not disappoint, winning their matches, 2512, 25-10 and 25-9. Leading up to DIG PINK, schools around the district raised funds by hosting Think Pink Days and selling items such as pink wristbands and pink shoelaces. Middle and high school athletic teams dedicated a home game to increase awareness and raise money for the cause. Since their inception eight years ago, DIG PINK and the Think Pink Days have generated more than $75,000 for the cause, according to CarolAnn Habeeb-Kiel, teacher, varsity volleyball coach and coordinator of all the fundraising efforts throughout

the district. She began the effort by partnering with the Side-Out Foundation, an organization that helps fundraise and promote awareness of cancer through volleyball sporting events. From her experience, she has encouraged others to get annual checkups, which led to her mom’s diagnosis. Her mom is now a seven-year

support the families, and celebrate the survivors and hold on to hope.” Each year the DIG PINK event features a special flower ceremony where each Massapequa varsity team member presents a pink carnation to an opposing team member as a symbol of hope in the battle against breast cancer. Spectators also have the opportunity to participate in a “Stand Up to Cancer” campaign. For a small donation, they could place the name of a loved one stricken with the disease on a specially printed poster for display. The stands are crowded with posters naming hundreds of cancer victims. This year, the McKenna Show Choir sang the National Anthem, and the Chiefettes Kickline and the Varsity Cheerleaders performed for the crowd. Outside the gym, the Booster Club had a grand display of pink raffle baskets, pink confectionaries and Massapequa Chiefs clothing for sale to support the cause. College Essay Program Massapequa High School’s College Essay Night Workshop program was named a 2015 Program of Excellence by the New York State English Council (NYSEC). The award recognizes programs that are unique and effective, and enrich English Language Arts instruction by offering creative opportunities to students and staff. The honor was presented at the council’s annual conference in Albany to members of Massapequa High School’s English Department. “This award is a testament to the ingenuity and talent of our English teaching staff, which has

worked so hard to deliver a program that greatly impacts the way students express themselves, not only to college admissions officers, but to those they encounter throughout college and into their careers,” said Kevin Harrington, the district’s K-12 Curriculum Associate for English. “We are proud of their achievements as well as what our students have accomplished by participating in the program.” The College Essay Night Workshop is offered to students and their parents/ guardians in both the fall and spring semesters to help students discover

their voices and creatively mine their pasts for the purpose of writing effective college admissions essays. Brainstorming activities assist them in finding a meaningful essay topic, and they learn how to apply all the steps of the Writing Process as they choose topics, develop their personal essays, and provide insightful reflections to end their essays. In addition to experiencing a variety of strategies for producing these essays, several successful essay models are presented. They also learn the key components of the college essay, what colleges are looking for in these essays, and how to write an essay that will not only assist them in getting into college but also be significant to them and their lives. After documentation about the program was submitted to the NYSEC for consideration for the award, a member from its executive board conducted a site visit, which included meeting with teachers, visiting the workshop and meeting with both parents and students following the workshop.

Reinforcing Respect

Red Ribbon Week, the oldest and largest drug prevention campaign in the nation, was celebrated at elementary schools around the Massapequa School District. The campaign focuses on the importance of leading healthy lifestyles and making good choices, and encourages students to pledge their support to live drug-free through the symbol of a red ribbon. This year’s theme, “Respect Yourself. Be Drug Free” was carried out with a host of theme days, assemblies and activities centered on making healthy choices. East Lake kicked off

its campaign with a PTAsponsored assembly titled, “Healthy Choices,” which addressed selfesteem, conflict resolution, healthy eating and awareness. After the assembly, students were given bracelets with the message, “Respect Yourself. Live Drug Free” and were asked to wear them all week to show their commitment. Other drug prevention activities were planned for each day of the week, including wearing the color red and pledging to be drug free, writing about how to stay healthy, and listening to Assistant Principal Bryan

Piotrowski read the book, “Oh, the Places You’ll Go,” by Dr. Seuss and discussing connections in the book to making good choices. At the end of the week, students discussed what they learned and were encouraged to express that knowledge by writing letters or drawing pictures. In addition to the program, the Students Against Destructive Decisions (SADD) club made a commitment to promoting the importance of healthy living and self-respect. They spent their first SADD meeting writing the positive message of “Respect” on the playground fence at East Lake School to remind everyone to respect themselves. McKenna and Unqua elementary schools also participated in theme days, such as wearing their clothes backwards for “Turn Your Back on Drugs” day and wearing hats for “Put a Lid on Drugs” day. They also wore red to show their unity against drugs.

CHURCH CLEANUP - Troop 776 has been helping the Presbyterian Community Church out with a fall and spring clean up for the last couple of years to show our appreciation for the Church allowing us to have our meetings in their hall.
