PRESBYTERIAN COMMUNITY NURSERY SCHOOL

MOMMY & ME REGISTRATION

with Jamie Lynn Ryan

Registration For Our Tot-Time Mommy & Me Program Now Taking Place Thru December 21st, 2016.

The Aftermath Never should disagreement dissolve into petty namecalling and insults, nor should anyone be written off for a mere difference of opinion. Uninformed ignorance? Perhaps. But not an educated analysis of the facts. And with that, we head into the next phase, the great unknown. Better that we should do this with the compassion and understanding that has made this country what it is, with a measure of respect for others, and with a sense of unity toward a common cause – the betterment of life for all those who reside here, as well as future generations to come. That, I believe, is a point we can all agree upon.

This program is for children 18 months to 2 1/2 years old and their parent, grandparent or caregiver. Activities include arts and crafts, puppets, story time, singing, movement activities and group play. Children who will be 18 months old by January 1, 2017 are eligible. Classes meet once a week.

Session Days/Times

Monday or Wednesday 9AM-10AM or 10:15AM-11:15AM

Classes begin January 2017 and run through May 2017.

Please Join Us For This Fun-Filled Program! Everyone is Welcome. Call For Additional Information.

MASSAPEQUA PARK - SOUTH BAY’S NEIGHBOR NEWSPAPERS - WEDNESDAY NOVEMBER 16, 2016 • www.southbaysneighbor.com

Now that the election has come and gone, and we’ve all spent the better part of the last year weighing in with our thoughts and opinions on matters political, societal and purely personal, perhaps now is the time to take a step back and reset. Votes have been cast, ballots counted, and the country has spoken. Whether or not the outcome was to your particular liking, at this point, is, quite frankly, beside the point. The beauty of this country is that we do welcome the discourse, the open discussion of all topics, both mainstream and taboo. That said, yet another benefit to living in this nation is the

fact that democracy has sustained for nearly 250 years, in spite of those very polarizing viewpoints which have consumed our nation over the course of time. In that, there is a measure of victory, even in defeat. The debates which have been waged over the social media channels these last several months have been intense, to say the least. Families have been divided, friendships pushed to their limits, neighborhoods torn apart by protests, rallies and the like. Months of hatred and rage have been built up to the point of no return, in some cases. This is truly a shame. At no point should honest, open discussion be a negative to be avoided at all costs.

Council on the Arts and the Department of Cultural Affairs, among others. Ms. Denis’ list of professional accomplishments is a lengthy one. She has performed or choreographed for several renowned artistic ventures including Queensboro Dance Festival, Long Island Dance Consortium, Salvator LaRussa Dance Theatre, Roy Arias Theatre and Brooklyn Arts Exchange. She has collaborated with numerous luminaries in her field, including Fulbright Scholar and visual artist Siona Benjamin, and classical Indian dancer and choreographer Ishrat (Rakhi) Hoque. Ms. Denis is an accomplished educator. Before coming to LIHSA, she taught for several years in the New York City school system. At the East Bronx Academy for the Future, she developed the “Literacy through Creative Dance” program. She has also served the New York City Department of Education’s Offices of Arts and Special Projects as facilitator and adjudicator of the “Dance Arts Achieve Assessment,” a federally funded program that is as a national model of standardized arts assessments in public schools. Ms. Denis holds a bachelor’s degree in dance from Hofstra University, a master’s degree in dance education from New York University, and New York State certification as a dance educator for grades K-12.

Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts’ (LIHSA) own Dina Denis was lauded recently for her collaborative work with renowned choreographer Anabella Lenzu. Ms. Denis, who is the Director of the LIHSA Dance Department and a dance instructor at the school, won praise from critics for her performance in Lenzu’s retrospective, presented at the Argentinean Consulate. New York Arts reviewer Mari S. Gold was deeply affected by Ms. Denis’ paired performance with fellow dancer Lauren Ohmer. “As they stretched with imploring arms and beat the floor with their feet in frustration, it was impossible not to be moved,” Gold wrote. The Dance Enthusiast’s Jenny Thompson declared that Ms. Denis’ performance of Lenzu’s “Ilusiones de Percantas (Women’s Dreams)” was a showstopper. “It marks dancer Dina Denis’ standout moment,” wrote Thompson, “as she embodies the brash and sultry persona of her character.” Ms. Denis is a professional dynamo who is well known among the New York City dance community. She is Founder and Artistic Director of Dance Into Light (DIL), a troupe of artists from various disciplines in addition to dance, including visual artists, videographers, musicians and composers. The troupe - which has performed nationally and locally - has earned the endorsement of the Queens Council on the Arts, the New York State

district. “Receiving the New York State English Council’s Educator of Excellence award for Administration is a true honor,” Ms. Iconis said. “My professional life has been dedicated to the education of all students, particularly in the area of literacy development, thereby making this recognition even more meaningful.” Ms. Cockerill was one of three elementary school teachers from the state to earn Educator of Excellence. She has taught in the district since 1987 and is presently a first-grade teacher at East Lake Elementary School. Her principal, Thomas McKillop, described her as a pioneer in literacy instruction for introducing leveled libraries, guided reading groups, writing conferences with students and literacy centers before those were standard practices. She has served as a balanced literacy trainer in Massapequa and other districts. “I believe that my work is, first and foremost, a reflection of my love for the children I teach,” Ms. Cockerill said. “I truly

enjoy interacting with my students and watching them grow, and I am passionate about giving them the best foundation and early educational experience that I can.” Kristin Petersen and Jennifer Rabie, English teachers at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, were among four pairs of educators in the state to be named Collaborators of Excellence. They are co-teaching partners in a ninth-grade English integrated course, with Petersen serving as English teacher and Rabie providing special education support. Together, they have created collaborative lessons that are rigorous and engaging to all learners and foster a positive and supportive classroom experience. The Massapequa High School’s Media Studies program was also recognized as a Program of Excellence winner. Teachers from the program representing the school at the conference were Elyn Coyle, Laura Martingano, Brian Merges and Nichole Schnabel.

Healthy Habits That Can Have a Lasting Impact A long and healthy life is the ultimate goal for many people. While a host of factors beyond a person’s control, such as genetics, impact how long that person lives and how susceptible to certain medical conditions he or she may be, there are many things men and women can do to improve their chances of living long, healthy lives:

Stay on your toes. A healthy diet is a key component of a healthy lifestyle, but diet alone is not enough to promote a long and healthy life. According to the Johns Hopkins Medicine Health Library, the risks associated with a physically inactive lifestyle are considerable. Such risks include a greater risk of developing high blood pressure and coronary heart disease and even a greater risk for certain cancers. In addition, physical inactivity can add to feelings of anxiety and depression. Inactivity tends to increase with age, so men and women aiming for

long and healthy lives should make physical activity a vital part of their daily lives. Get your whole grains. Whole grains may be another key ingredient to a long and healthy life. Numerous studies have shown that increasing whole grain consumption can help prevent the onset of type 2 diabetes. Researchers who conducted a systematic review of studies examining the link between whole grains and type 2 diabetes prevention in 2007 found that eating an extra two servings of whole grains per day decreased a person’s risk of developing type 2 diabetes by 21 percent. That’s an important finding, as additional research has found that people with diabetes have an increased risk of developing Alzheimer’s disease, a neurodegenerative

condition that can dramatically reduce quality of life. Visit your physician annually, if not more frequently. While many people, especially those who feel healthy, are hesitant to visit their physicians, doing so may just save your life. Several diseases,

including cancer and heart disease, are more effectively treated when detected early. Annual physicals and discussions with your physician may uncover a disease in its early stages when it is most treatable. Waiting until symptoms appear may not be too late to treat a condition or disease, but taking a proactive approach increases the likelihood of early detection, which increases your chances of living a long and healthy life. Healthy habits improve peoples’ quality of life while also increasing the likelihood that men and women live long, healthy and productive lives.

Be Smart About Antibiotic Use When used correctly, antibiotics and similar drugs known as antimicrobial agents can alleviate infections caused by various bacteria and some types of fungi and parasites. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention says that these drugs have been used successfully for the last 70 years to treat patients with infectious diseases. But antibiotics cannot treat illnesses stemming from viruses, which include most colds and the flu. As effective as antibiotics can be, antibiotic resistance is a growing problem. The CDC reports that at least two million people become infected with bacteria that have become resistant to antibiotics, and roughly 23,000 people die each year as a result of these types of infections. An April 2014 report

from the World Health Organization stated, “This serious threat is no longer a prediction for the future, it is happening right now in every region of the world and has the potential to affect anyone, of any age, in any country. It is now a major threat to public health.”

production also may contribute to resistance.

The Alliance for the Prudent Use of Antibiotics says antibiotic resistance occurs when an antibiotic has lost its ability to effectively control or kill bacterial growth. The three main ways resistance develops include natural resistance to certain types of antibiotics, genetic mutation or through the acquisition of resistance from another bacterium. This resistance can occur spontaneously or through misuse of antibiotics or antimicrobials. Prescription medications are not always the culprits, either. Antibiotic use in livestock and food

Prudent antibiotic use can help prevent the recurrence of resistance. Individuals can help the process in a number of ways:

When antibiotic resistance occurs, a stronger drug may be needed to treat an infection that was once taken care of by a milder medication.

Become educated. The health resource Medscape, powered by WebMD, says in a recent survey of 796 clinicians, 42 percent of doctors have admitted to prescribing antibiotics 10 to 24 percent of the time even when they are not sure they are necessary. Patient request is a large factor in such offerings. About 25 percent of patients ask their doctor or nurse for antibiotics. Patients who educate themselves about the proper application of antibiotics may be less likely to request them, and that can help prevent the development of a resistance. Confirm need. Only take antibiotics when a bacteria-, parasite- or fungus-based illness is identified. These illnesses may include

strep throat, urinary tract infections or ear infections. Take a wait-and-see approach. Wait for lab results to come back for strep throat or other cultures to see if you need an antibiotic. Many viralbased illnesses will go away within two weeks’ time. Adhere to dosage guidelines. When prescribed antibiotics for an infection, take them as directed, making sure you complete the dosage cycle. Do not stop simply because you feel better. Stopping early may not be enough to effectively kill the bacteria and may contribute to resistance in the future. Antibiotic abuse and resistance are concerns that can be addressed by becoming informed and making smart medication choices.

Keep working. While many working men and women dream of the day when they can leave the daily grind behind once and for all, they might want to think more about a second career than a long, carefree retirement. A study from British researchers published in the International Journal of Geriatric Psychiatry found that each extra year that men and women work was associated with a six-week delay in the onset of dementia.

While men and women may want to retire from their professions, finding second careers or volunteering close to full-time hours may improve their long-term health and quality of life.
