The Girl Scouts of Nassau County announced today that three successful women leaders will address attendees during the Golden Flight to Leadership Conference and reception. Shefali Tsabary, a clinical psychologist and acclaimed author, will serve as the event’s keynote, self-made entrepreneur Sara Intonato and Silvia Acevedo, an engineer and the interim Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts USA, will speak to volunteers, both current Girl Scouts and Girl Scout alumni, and parents. The Lost Holiday November. No sooner has the last of the Halloween candy been given out to the neighborhood trick-ortreaters, than we are faced with the prospect of preparing for the next festive occasion on the calendar… Christmas, apparently. Year after year, the interval of time between the two seems to evaporate into a void of shopping, decorating, cooking and caroling, forgetting the small fact that there exists another holiday in between. I understand that, for some, Thanksgiving doesn’t have the same “fun” appeal to children and adults alike. There are no costumes, no Santa Claus, no presents to speak of… and yet, that is precisely what makes the day so uniquely special.

The entire point, in fact, is to be grateful for that which we have – family, friends, health, happiness – and not be caught up in the materialism that tends to overtake every other occasion. It’s not about the meal, or the football, or the Black Friday shopping deals that continue to creep into Thursday; it’s about the company you spend the day celebrating with. This is the case no matter the holiday, of course; but on Thanksgiving, we tend to step back and appreciate it just a bit more. Or we should. So to all those who enjoy shopping at the mall while being serenaded by Christmas carols over the stores’ PA systems… there will be plenty of time for that beginning on November 25th. Until

The Nassau BOCES Parent-Child Home Program (PCHP) has named Regina Farinaccio as its new assistant coordinator. The PCHP, an early intervention program designed to help educationally atrisk preschoolers, has been serving Long Island families for more than 50 years. Dear Fellow Residents: Summer has come to an abrupt end as the cool fall air blows through our fabulous Village. The leaves are changing and everyone is making preparations for winter by closing pools and wrapping the backyard furniture. I have been looking at some of the winter forecasts and it looks to be another cold one and we could see more snow than last. Rest assured Village staff is prepared for whatever Mother Nature will send our way. During the last few months, the Village refurbished the Korean War Memorial. The stone walkway created a hazard for our veterans so we removed all the stone and replaced it with a cement walkway. The final product came out beautiful and is a tribute to our Korean War veterans. Our veterans are second to none and they deserve the best.

Village personnel have been busy getting the Village ready for the holiday season. Preparations are underway on Park Boulevard for our Annual Christmas Tree and Menorah Lighting. We are continuing to replace the lights in the trees with LED lights and this year all the holiday houses have been given a fresh coat of paint and once again will be decorated by local merchants. The ceremony will take place on Saturday, November 26th. I hope your family and friends join us in one of our greatest traditions. On December 4th, the Village will host our Annual Holiday Open House from 2pm to 4pm. There will be holiday music performed by our local schools, a special visit from Santa, and plenty of goodies for the children. With the holiday season upon us, I would like to remind everyone to shop and dine locally. Over the past year we have welcomed several new merchants in the Village and they need our support. Mail Delivery During & After Snowstorms

The Village is organizing a food drive for the holidays to benefit the food pantry at St. Rose of Lima. Nonperishable items can be dropped off in the lobby at Village Hall.

To help letter carriers deliver mail safely, residents are reminded maintaining a clear path to the mailbox, including steps, porches, walkways and street approach, will help letter carriers maintain consistent delivery service. Carriers are not required to deliver to locations where these issues create a hazardous condition.

The Village is also participating in the Toys for Tots program sponsored by the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve. Residents are invited to drop off new unwrapped toys in the Toys for Tots Box located in the lobby at Village Hall. Toy donations will be accepted until Tuesday, December 13th.

What to do in a Snowstorm

Village Taxes: REMINDER

In the event of a major snowstorm (three inches or more), all residents are urged to clear the streets of all cars. Cars should be placed in driveways, garages, or any other available space. If you do not have off-street parking for your car, Village Law allows the following: During a snow emergency occurring in even numbered years, parking will be permitted on even numbered sides of the streets. During a snow emergency occurring in odd numbered years, parking will be permitted on odd numbered sides of the street. Please remember that streets are often plowed more than once during a typical snowstorm. Residents are advised that plowing is not completed until 24 hours after the snow has stopped. Driveway aprons should not be shoveled out until the plows have opened the street to maximum width. When shoveling your sidewalk or driveway, do not throw the snow onto the street. This will turn to ice, cause a dangerous situation, and may force additional plowing. Snow should be placed on the utility strip or your front lawn. Snow from driveways should be piled on your lawn. Please consider these points and help us to help you during a storm.

Change In Village Laws Corner Obstructions The corner obstruction law has changed. Previously, there could be no obstructions on a corner within 35 feet. That law has been reduced to 25 feet. Text of the new laws is as follows: Chapter 298 Streets and Sidewalks Article 1. General Provisions Secion 298/-2 Obstruction of View at intersections of the as follows: A. It shall be unlawful to maintain or permit to remain any bushes or other plants on a corner lot within 25 feet of the curb line which obstruct a view of more than 30 inches above the level of the sidewalk of the adjacent street pavement. Any bush or tree within the twnety-five foot triangle must be trimmed free of brances and foliage between 30 inches and 8 feeet in height. Chapter 345 Zoming Article IV Height and Area Regulations Section 345-30 Front Yards E. Vision Clearance. On any corner log of which a front yard is required by this chanpter, it shall be unlawful to construct or maintain or permit any fence or any other structure, whether temporary or permanent, within 25 feet of the curb line which obstructs a view between 30 inches and 8 feet above the level of the sidewalk of the adjacent street pavement.

Garbage Collection Garbage should not be placed out for collection before 5pm the evening before collection day and should be retrieved not later than 8pm on collection day. Containers must be secured with a tight cover. All garbage cans and containers, when not placed out for collection, shall be kept at the side of the house or at the back of the house and not in front of the houseline.

East Lake Elementary School students in the Massapequa School District pledged to make good choices during Red Ribbon Week, which was celebrated nationwide from October 24th-28th. The Red Ribbon Campaign is the oldest and largest drug prevention program in the nation and this year’s theme was “YOLO: Be Drug Free #YouOnlyLiveOnce.” All students received Red Ribbon Week bracelets, pencils and stickers. The campaign kicked off with an assembly, “Corey

the Dribbler,” which focused on determination, goal setting, respect and healthy choices. Every class saw a YouTube video of Assistant Principal Bryan Piotrowski reading “The Red Ribbon” by John Lasne. Teachers then had a discussion with students about what they learned from the book and about making good choices. Students completed “I will stay healthy by…” activity sheets which were hung in the hallways. On the same day that children and staff members were all encouraged to wear red,

Red Ribbon Week each class signed a pledge that related to this year’s theme. Members of East Lake’s Students Against Destruction Decisions Chapter used red ribbons to spell out “Strive” on the fence outside the school. “Red Ribbon Week provides us with an opportunity to reinforce our commitment to living a healthy and drug-free lifestyle,” Mr. Piotrowski said. “Our school is dedicated to education that supports making good decisions and showing our STUDENT GOV’T - St. Martin’s School recently inducted its 2016-2017 Student intolerance for drugs in our Government.
