Family Fall Festival Fun

he Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Family Fall and Halloween Festival was recently held at Marjorie Post Park. Each year, residents come out to this annual free event to celebrate the arrival of the fall season with fun activities for children and adults alike, including Halloween crafts, a hay ride, bouncies, games, photo opportunities and refreshments. The festival featured a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children.

Take a deep breath. It calms the mind. So they say, anyway. Me, I tend to bottle all the day’s anxiety and frustration inside, carry it over into the next day (or week) and wait for it to eventually, inevitably, explode – usually at someone who has the misfortune to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Seems healthy and productive, no? Enter: Yoga, that deep breathing, spirit cleansing, relaxation technique that so many swear by. Unfortunately, once a week doesn’t quite cut it when the madness engulfs all aspects of life. Best to take

that meditation practice back home with you, to work, sitting in traffic each morning and evening… everywhere. It’s guaranteed to come in handy. It’s amazing how an act so simple that we take for granted can, when given the chance, alleviate much of what ails us during the daily grind. Breathe in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…Breathe out...and repeat as needed. To infinity (and beyond). I would imagine everyone has stress in his/ her life. The difference lies in how each person handles it, or doesn’t, as the case may be. While some thrive on chaos, others shut down at even the slightest roadblock. Any deviation from the agreed-upon plan

is met with panic. There is no going with the flow, only uncertainty, anxiety and, ultimately, aggravation. The best we can all do is focus on the big picture, on those things that are truly important. As another of my favorite quotations states, Frame every socalled disaster with these words: In five years, will this matter? If the answer is no, move on. Treat those obstacles with the level of importance they deserve – minimal. Few things are worth the time and effort we spend stressing over them. Fine advice if you can follow it. I’m still trying. ‘Til then, breath in… 1-2-3-4-5-6…

Canine Companions for Independence – a national non-profit organization that provides assistance dogs for children and adults with disabilities, is proud to announce that Massapequa Park, New York resident Romina CappellaVelazquez and family recently began raising an assistance dog in-training for Canine Companions for

Independence. Puppy Saunder is a lab/ golden retriever cross who will one-day know over 50 commands, and be matched with a person with disabilities. Volunteer Puppy Raisers are critically important to the work of Canine Companions for Independence. Puppy Raisers take the pups

into their home at eight weeks of age, raising them, teaching them basic commands and socialization skills. The socialization is perhaps the most important, because the dogs need to be exposed to any and all types of surroundings. With the special yellow capes they wear, these dogs are permitted to go to many public areas that family pets aren’t allowed. When the dogs reach about a year and a half old, they are returned to the Canine Companions for Independence regional headquarters in New York. They begin six months of advanced training with the organizations nationally renowned instructors, before they are matched with a child or adult with disabilities. Giving Back

Venturing Crew 2162 knows how to have fun and help the community at the same time! The crew is a part of the Boy Scouts of America that is a co-ed group from the ages of 14-21 years old. Crew 2162 specializes in “giving back.” Every month, they help make peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for the homeless on Long Island at St. James RC Church in Seaford. This October, being the month of spooks, goblins and skeletons, they volunteered two weekends to work the “Haunted Barn” for Horseability in the SUNY Old Westbury Campus. They participated by being scary clowns, spooky skeleton and creatures of the night. Each night, they dedicated

5-6 hours to scare, spook and entertain the visitors. “It is a wonderful experience for these teenagers to have. They are learning that in a society of take, take, and take to give back in service to organizations in need. Community service and “giving back” does not have to be boring and mundane,” states Maureen Fox, the crew advisor. “They have performed service for all different organizations including wrapping presents for cancer kids at Christmas, performing in costume at Holiday parties for disabled children as well as helping at numerous walks – such as the Light the Night walk for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. “ The crew also does other social activities like

camping, kayaking, going to Bounce and Island Rock. The youth decide what HALLOWEEN PARADE - Residents were welcomed to the Annual Halloween activity they are going to Parade held at Brady Park. The event, sponsored by Our Lady of the Island Knights do and the adults supervise. of Columbus Council No. 6911, is held annually for the children of the community. They always seem to be the most excited about the community service activities. It really opens their eyes, hearts and minds to a different part of society. “We will only be influencing them during this portion of the lives, but hopefully it will help shape the individuals they become.” Crew 2162 is always looking for new members as well as organizations to work with. SLEEPY HOLLOW 5K - The Annual Sleepy Hollow 5K Charity Run was recently com. held at Brady Park. All proceeds raised from the event are donated to the Hagedorn Little Village School, which provides therapeutic and educational services for children with special needs.

TOBAY FALL FESTIVAL - The Town of Oyster Bay’s Annual Family Fall and Halloween Festival was recently held at Marjorie Post Park in Massapequa. Each year, residents come out to this annual free event to celebrate the arrival of the fall season with fun activities for children and adults alike, including Halloween crafts, a hayride, bouncies, games, photo opportunities and refreshments. The Fall and Halloween Festival featured a ‘U-Pick’ pumpkin patch for children to enjoy the unique experience of picking out their own pumpkin.

TRUNK OR TREAT - The Massapequa Mom’s “Trunk or Treat” Street Fair was recently held at Lou Anthony Field in Massapequa. The “Trunk or Treat” Street Fair originated in 2012 as a way for children who missed Halloween due to damage caused by Hurricane Sandy to have fun and provide a stress free day for parents. The Street Fair features face painting, food vendors, carnival games, petting zoo and bounce castles while attendees decorate their cars with Halloween decorations and fill their trunks with candy and treats.

The newest addition to the faculty of the Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) is an accomplished musical talent. Christopher Scher has a masterful understanding of multiple instruments and has been sharing that gift by teaching others to play for nearly 10 years. He joined LIHSA as a music instructor this fall. The Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts has been offering intensive training in the visual and performing arts for more than 40 years. Students from both Nassau and Suffolk counties are eligible to attend. LIHSA graduates have gone on to a variety of prestigious colleges and conservatories including the Juilliard School, Boston Conservatory, Cooper Union and the American Academy of Dramatic Arts (just to name a few).

At LIHSA, Mr. Scher will instruct courses in music theory, ear training, the history of western music and digital media. To do this, he will draw on his vast knowledge of musical styles, from classical to contemporary. He will also pull from his background as a private applied music instructor. Mr. Scher has taught guitar at the Rock Underground in Commack, saxophone at the Knox School in St. James and general music at Gil Breines Music in Deer Park. Independently, Mr. Scher has taught students from a wide range of abilities and ages, mentoring and preparing them for seasonal recitals, ensembles and performances with the New York State School Music Association. At LIHSA, he will also direct the classical instrumental ensemble, drawing from his background as Music Director for the Sagamore

Children’s Psychiatric Center and Classical Guitar Director for the TriCommunity Youth Agency in Huntington. Mr. Scher holds a bachelor of music degree from Five Towns College and a master of arts degree from Stony Brook University. He also holds New York State certification in music instruction for grades K-12. “Chris has tremendous potential for success,” said LIHSA Interim Principal Jack Lenson. “His enthusiasm, knowledge and diverse skill set are an ideal combination for an educator. He is a team player who works well with colleagues and he has a strong rapport with his students; they’re drawn to him. I believe that Chris has the ability to attract additional interest to the music program and to help us build it into the future.”

Following him were members of the Board of Education and Central Administration as well as other school staff. With the Colorguard waving its flags to the beat, the Marching Band bellowed as it maneuvered down community streets to the high school. Cheerleaders, the Chiefettes kickline, sports teams, clubs and a series of decorated golf carts from each high school class rounded out the procession. Just before game time, senior football players, cheerleaders and Chiefettes were called to the field with their parents. Then the Marching Band took to the field to perform the National Anthem as

American Sign Language students stood along the track and signed the Anthem for the audience. After the game’s first half, ending in a 0-0, the Homecoming Court was announced among cheers. A bouquet of flowers was presented to Homecoming Queen Olivia Smithwick who took photos with her King Christian Bounamassa. Fans were then entertained by a rousing halftime show that featured the Marching Band and Colorguard, the varsity and junior varsity cheerleaders, and the Chiefettes kickline, followed by an exciting second half that led to the Chiefs’ victory. Thanks go out to the booster clubs and all the volunteers that made Homecoming a special event.

The highspirited parade and the Chiefs’ exhilarating win over Uniondale, 35-0, showcased community pride at its finest. The day honored longtime resident, teacher and legendary wrestling coach Al Bevilacqua, a National Wrestling Hall of Famer who has made his mark nationwide for making a difference in the lives of countless students and young athletes. He said of the honor, “This is a great way to finish off a career. Under the guidance of Den Leader Bryan Peterson and the mentoring of the Boy Scouts from Troop 776, the “Jackalope Patrol” learned how to build, ignite, and extinguish a fire, as well as knife skills, in preparing a hobo packet lunch of “Cluck In the Tree” and brownies cooked in oranges.
