Back in the Spotlight By: Jamie Lynn Ryan

This year, I gingerly decided to throw my tap shoes back into the ring by enrolling in my old dance studio’s Adult Tap class, after five years of “retirement.” There is something about the camaraderie of dancing with old friends – alumni, as we are referred to – that brings back a ﬂood of happy memories of days gone by… days spent on stage in tutus and tiaras, sequins and sparkles, smiling for the audience in the dimly lit auditorium as we performed the routines we had perfected over the last six months. So, when the opportunity presented itself this September, I decided to give it a go. I have to admit, I wasn’t

sure what to expect after such a long absence. But, to my pleasant surprise, not much has changed. The old tap shoes still fit, the hardwood ﬂoor of the studio shines just as I remembered it, and the steps… well, they’re a work in progress, week by week, as my muscle memory slowly but surely recalls the footwork that at one point had been second nature. They say that those you spend years enjoying extracurricular activities with become like a second family of sorts over time, and the dance studio is no exception – especially after 20 years of essentially growing up with the same core group of girls. Fast forward a couple of decades, and some of these

same “girls” are now married with children of their own – a few dancing at the studio as well – or pursuing careers in various fields. To say “I feel old” would be an understatement; and yet, somehow, once we all enter the studio, those “grown up” problems seem to melt away. Flash back to the little girl in the pale yellow tutu, arms flailing, feet scurrying in a mad dash to join her class onstage for her very first dance recital… Where ever did the years go indeed? It’s nice to know that, as our lives continue to move at a frenzied pace day after day, there is still time to step into another mode, lace up the old tap shoes and shuffle our problems away. At least for an hour, anyway.

From November 19th to March 5th, 2017, all of Nassau County Museum of Art’s galleries are devoted to the art of photography. On view in the Main Galleries on the first ﬂoor are two exhibitions drawn from the collection of the Kalamazoo Institute of the Arts (KIA), Kalamazoo, Michigan: Ansel Adams: Sight and Feeling and Light Works: 100 Years of Photos. On view in the Second Floor Galleries is New Photos: Long Island Collects, important photographic works of the last half century from private Long Island art collections. Ansel Adams: Sight and Feeling Ansel Adams’ ability to create photographs with a remarkable range and subtlety of tones is legendary. Yet for all his technical mastery, Adams recognized that what made a compelling photograph

was far more elusive. This exhibition of Adams’ photographs from the KIA collection suggests how his intuitive and emotional response to the landscape resulted in powerful and enduring photographs. Light Works: 100 Years of Photos From Eadweard Muybridge’s 19thcentury photographic studies of animal locomotion to Richard Misrach’s contemporary chromogenic prints, this exhibition spans the history of photography. Alfred Stieglitz, Edward Curtis, Ansel Adams, Dorothea Lange, Diane Arbus, Richard Avedon, Walker Evans, Henri CartierBresson and many other celebrated photographers comprise this survey of photography processes and subjects from 1873 to 2000. New Photos: Long Island Collects

New Photos: Long Island Collects focuses on significant photographic works created from the 1960s through the present day. Historically, photography has been used as a documentary medium to tell a story, Using the malleable medium of the photograph, artists have often enhanced or staged their works to convey a story, create emotion, or otherwise touch the viewer in a significant manner. This exhibition presents a survey of photographic works from private collectors. Among the artists included in New Photos: Long Island Collects are John Baldessari, Matthew Barney, Robert Mapplethorpe, Vic Muniz, Cindy Sherman and William Wegman, among many others. The Museum is offering a variety of public programs to amplify the experience

of visiting these three exhibitions. Two films are screening daily: Stryker’s America: Photographing the Great Depression and Cartier-Bresson’s Century. Three Brown Bag Lectures illuminate the art and the artists included in these exhibitions. Other public programs are inspired by the exhibitions: Sketching in the Galleries, and The River, a concert performed by the musical ensemble ETHEL. The Museum’s family programs from November 19th to March 5th similarly draw inspiration from the exhibitions: Neiman Marcus Family Sundays, February Break for Art and two Super Family Sunday offerings, Winter Wonderland and Merrynaking in a Gold Coast Mansion. Students in the Massapequa School District have been learning about fire safety from the experts. Volunteers from the Massapequa Fire Department have been visiting the six elementary schools throughout October, which is Fire Prevention Month, and

hosting safety assemblies. Each program includes a video about fire safety in the home. Volunteers also talk about the importance of smoke detectors and how often to change the batteries. They invite children up on stage to demonstrate stop, drop and roll, and dress up one

teacher at each assembly in full firefighter gear. Students from the elementary schools will participate in a fire safety poster contest with the Massapequa Fire Department and the firstplace winner from the district will receive a ride to school on a fire truck.

COMMUNITY WALKING TOUR - Congressman Pete King had the opportunity to meet with students and teachers from Berner Middle School in Massapequa who were on a community walking tour of Massapequa Park. The Congressman thanked the teachers for their great work and wished the kids continued success.

Pre-School Program Massapequa High School’s Family and Consumer Sciences Department, in conjunction with its Child Study course, will once again sponsor a preschool program for district residents. High school students enrolled in the Child Study course have successfully completed the Parenting and Child Development course and are now ready for a hands-on approach to learning. The students will plan, prepare and implement interdisciplinary activities within a thematic unit for the preschool students. Preschool will begin around March 9th,

2017 and continue for approximately 11 weeks to “graduation.” There are two sessions: Tuesdays and Thursdays or Wednesdays and Fridays, each from 9:55 a.m. to 12 noon. Children must attend both days of the session. A donation of $60 per child to help defray expenses is encouraged. Applications will be available by the front security desk, or in the general office of Massapequa High School, through December 23rd, and can be picked up between 7 a.m. and 4 p.m. Applications may also be downloaded from the Massapequa School District website, www.

msd.k12.ny.us. Copies of completed applications must be returned to the general office at Massapequa High School by Tuesday, January 3rd, 2017. To be eligible, children must be between the ages of 3, as of March 9th, 2017, and 5, but not attending kindergarten. They must also be toilet trained. Enrollment in the popular program is limited to 18 children per session and selection will be by lottery drawing with Massapequa residents and previous students receiving priority. Acceptance notifications will be emailed in late January 2017.

places to read and share their answers with each other. This is the second year the school has participated in Global Read Aloud. The initiative uses technology to create a global reading community. Ms. Gonzalez said it also shows children that they have the same thoughts and reﬂections on books as students in other schools. “It’s really to promote reading in an exciting way,” she said. “The students love coming in and seeing who we’re going to connect with.”

The fictional story of Trevor Cool came to life for students at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, as they took part in an interactive storytelling experience. Cory Levine of Submerge Storytelling transformed a classroom by filling it with maps, illustrations, toys and other props. Instead of reading them the story, Mr. Levine would pose questions about possible plot developments to the children and have them go through the room to look for evidence. Armed with clipboards, they wrote

down their observations before gathering together to discuss their findings. Over the course of the week, the story unfolded for the children. They searched for hidden keys and cracked secret codes. The purpose of the experience was to teach students about the different elements of a story and show them the importance of using evidence to back up their arguments. “It’s authentic learning,” second-grade teacher Mary Fusco said of the program, which she described as a hands-on way to build reading comprehension

skills. “This is really the way it should be.” The room was designed with both simple and complex clues, so students of different ages and learning abilities could succeed. Levine explained that in his made-up story about a middle-school student who breaks codes for the CIA, the children also learn about positive traits including friendship, loyalty and work ethic. Throughout the year, he will be working with Oyster Bay Town students in several other Councilman Joseph G. elementary schools in the Pinto recently attended district. the Massapequa American Legion Post #1066 Annual Boys State/Girls State Recognition Night. Each year, Massapequa Post #1066 sponsors local high school students to participate in the annual Boys State/Girls State Program which educates students to issues relating
