The American Heart Association’s 8th annual Healing Heart 5K Run/ Walk will be held on Sunday, November 20th, on the property of the beautiful Pugliese Vineyards in the heart of the Long Island wine country in Cutchogue. Hundreds of runners are expected on this new course through the Vineyard. Day of event registration begins at 8:00 a.m., with the fun run for children 10 and under beginning at 10:00 a.m. and the 3.1 mile off road race beginning at 10:15 a.m. Following the race, the awards ceremony will take place at 11:15 a.m. with awards being given to the top male and female runners along with the top runners in various age categories. A health expo will also be available during the event open to all participants.

The Healing Heart 5K hopes to raise awareness that heart disease is the number one killer of men and women across the country and here on Long Island. Student Star Joshua DeJesus, who graduated from Nassau BOCES Long Island High School for the Arts this past June, is currently enjoying an extremely successful freshman college year. In addition to studying acting with the Conservatory of Theater Arts, Purchase College at the State University of New York, Josh has already landed major roles in theater and on television.

This summer, Josh joined the off-Broadway ensemble cast of the classic urban musical Runaways. According to The New York Times, the production was “a pulsing reincarnation testifying to the atomic power of adolescent angst. Every other number feels like a rousing finale,” reviewer Ben Brantley observed. “But how are you going to keep a lid on a cast with this much natural

talent and vigor?” At the end of this month, Josh will star in an episode of the hit NBC drama Chicago Fire. He will portray Chris Brady, a troubled teen who has been abandoned and forced to live in a sewer, and comes to befriend firefighter Stella Kidd (series regular Miranda Rae Mayo). This morning, I was hoping to see the sunrise. Not because I have never had the privilege of experiencing one, but because I thought it would be a fitting way to mark what would have been my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, an occasion we, as a family, are forced to bittersweetly celebrate in his absence. Somehow, I thought the golden rays welcoming a brand new day might make the sadness simply melt away. Unfortunately, when I awoke, it was not to the promising haze of dawn, but to an overcast sky brimming with rain clouds, seemingly ready to shower the land at any given moment. I suppose that was fitting in its own way. Realistically, the prospect

of “celebrating” any occasion following the passing of someone special is a fairly impossible task. Absent is the guest of honor, replaced by memories of days gone by and happier times. They say these things grow easier with time, but I’m not sure that is truly the case. Perhaps we just learn to adapt and deal with them differently... but the pain remains all the same. First holidays, especially, seem to take the biggest emotional toll on those loved ones left behind, as they attempt to pick up the pieces and carry on as usual. The problem is, there is no “norm,” so to speak. Traditions seem empty, and those things that once brought us joy are tinged with melancholy. Life goes on, of course, and happiness is found in

other outlets as new customs are established and flourish over time. The memories we treasure become the backbone, the foundation, of our existence, as we build upon them and incorporate new generations and settings. It can be a painful process, to be sure, but those memories, and the prospect of making new ones, provide the motivation to forge ahead. And so, on this, my Grandpa’s 90th birthday, I remember the loving man at the center of so many of my happiest memories. I find solace in knowing that he is always with me, in one form or another, along with all of my loved ones who have passed on through the years. And I take comfort in the fact that so many special people have touched my life.

Sunny skies, a spirited crowd and a Chiefs’ win led for a perfect day at Massapequa High School on October 15th for the annual homecoming celebration. There was excitement in the air as the parade kicked off at Massapequa Park Village Hall and traveled to the high school. Each class decorated a golf cart and banner with a different theme. The parade also featured the marching band, color guard, cheerleaders, homecoming court, student organizations, and administrators and board of education members. The grand marshal was Dr. Barbara Williams, who retired as the high school

principal in June. Since it was the final home varsity football game of the year, all senior players, cheerleaders and kickline members were introduced during a pre-game ceremony and presented yellow roses to their parents. The marching band performed the national anthem as students from the American Sign Language program signed along. The band, along with the color guard, returned to perform its DC Comics-inspired halftime show, “From Gotham to Metropolis.” There were also performances by the cheerleaders and Chiefettes. Halftime featured

the introduction of the homecoming court, with John McConnell and Sarah Whelan crowned the king and queen. Rounding out the court were the princes and princesses from each grade: Anthony Papasodero and Jessica Gruenfelder (freshman), Jo Jo Icart and Kayla Posporelis (sophomores), Christian DeNave, Jenna Morales and Kaitlyn Nightingale (juniors), and Stephen Urli and Kristen Ader (seniors). With a large crowd cheering them on, and chants of “MASS-A-PEQUA” coming from the Chief Nation corner of the bleachers, the Chiefs held off the Baldwin Bruins, 2120, to earn its fifth win of the season.

Go Gold Donation Athletes at Massapequa High School are always in the giving spirit. For Pediatric Cancer Awareness Month, students on the fall sports teams collected various items for the Sunrise Association, which offers free programs for children with cancer. Massapequa’s Go Gold fundraiser was started last year by student Emily Taylor, now a junior. She came up with the idea to honor a younger cousin, who is a survivor of childhood cancer. Led by varsity assistant football

coach Brian Rath, the fall sports teams joined the effort and each team collected items for Sunrise, including video games and gaming systems, toys, and arts and crafts supplies. Teams also collected monetary donations at select Go Gold home games this fall, where the athletes raised awareness by wearing gold or yellow accessories such as socks or shoe laces. “It’s amazing to see how everybody worked together for a such a good cause,” Emily said.

Sunrise Association offers day camps for children with cancer and their siblings. On October 13th, the donations were presented to the organization’s vice president, Aileen Hoffman, who said the items would be used to support children who attend the summer camp. Next June, Massapequa athletes will participate in the Sunrise Association’s walk at its Wheatley Heights camp.

either used their own photos, or ones they found online. After making their sketch, they then used color layering to complete their drawings. As part of the assignment, students had to make their drawings look different than the pictures, and Ms. Adler encouraged them to use their imaginations as they made their choices with color. merged two different art styles as students created contemporary drawings using impressionistic techniques. Studio Art is the foundation course for advanced art classes offered at the high school’s main campus. Ames students can also take Studio Art 2, which focuses on digital media.

The Adelphi NY Statewide Breast Cancer Hotline & Support Program is seeking breast cancer survivors to respond to a survey to determine the long and short-term value of support groups. The program, which has provided emotional support and education to New Yorkers concerned about breast cancer for 36 years, is in the second year of this research, asking survivors to share their feelings about support groups. The initial results of the research, conducted with 90 respondents, has produced some interesting data: • more than 75% of the respondents believe that being a member of a support group was valuable for their recovery; • 97% percent of respondents would recommend a support group to a friend who was diagnosed with breast cancer; • 98% of the respondents report still thinking about breast cancer at least once every day although more than half have not attended a support group in over a year. The researchers have found that many of the respondents have favorable thoughts about breast cancer with 65% expressing gratitude that they are grateful that they beat breast cancer and 46% report thinking favorably about the support they received. To mark Breast Cancer Awareness Month, Massapequa High School’s fall athletic teams have each dedicated one home game to the cause. The girls’ volleyball team held its 10th annual Dig Pink fundraiser on October 14th, with players from both the varsity and junior varsity teams donning pink uniforms and accessories. The event began with the junior varsity game. It followed with performances by the cheerleaders and Chiefettes kickline team and a Stand Up ceremony, in which players and people in the crowd held up signs with

the name of someone they knew affected by breast cancer. Pink carnations were then presented to all players from Massapequa and the visiting teams. The McKenna Elementary School Show Choir, comprised of fifth- and sixth-grade students, performed the national anthem and an inspirational song before the varsity game. Both volleyball games were played with pink balls. CarolAnn Habeeb-Kiel, the varsity coach, said that the event has raised more than $60,000 for the Side-Out Foundation in the past decade to support

breast cancer research. She noted that all players were wearing inspirational words on the back of their shirts such as live, trust, overcome, cherish and honor. The Massapequa Booster Club sold Dig Pink T-shirts and volleyball gear in the lobby, and raffled off baskets, with proceeds included in the school’s donation. “It’s a big event, and we raise a lot of money,” said Jamie Smith, a senior co-captain of the varsity volleyball team. “It’s nice for use to support breast cancer survivors and all those affected.”

Project Zero More than 60 teachers in the Massapequa School District have received training in the Project Zero Classroom initiative over the past six summers, which has created a new level of student participation in all grade levels. Teachers are sent for this weeklong training at Harvard University as a joint venture between the district and the Massapequa Community Fund. Diana Haanraadts, the assistant to the superintendent for instructional services and general administration, said the goal is to create more student engagement in the classrooms. Teachers are creating a seminar style atmosphere by facilitating rich and meaningful discussions that allow students to share their thoughts and learn from one another. During the training, teachers spent five full days in intense classes.

“It’s very eye-opening and it’s very challenging,” Ms. Haanraadts said. “It makes you think differently about the way you’re teaching and the way kids are learning.” Berner Middle School seventh-grade English teacher Louisa Vecchione attended the training twice and has since implemented Chalk Talk posters in her classrooms. On a large piece of paper, students each have to respond to a quote from a book, a concept or an image. By taking the pressure off of students in having to answer in front of the entire class, they are more willing to share their thoughts and often expand on each other’s ideas. Megan Pavlick, a fifthgrade teacher at Fairfield Elementary School, has her students do weekly reflective journaling. They create illustrated metaphors based on a concept they learned that week using various

artistic mediums. After a classroom brainstorming session, students make their metaphors as classical music plays in the background, then share and discuss their finished pieces. “Reflective journaling provides opportunities for ongoing assessment for the teacher and self-assessment for my students,” Ms. Pavlick said. “These artists, thinkers, scholars, readers and writers all value each other’s thinking. What else could a teacher ask for? It’s my favorite time of our week together.” Many of the teachers who have attended the training continue to meet in groups to discuss their implementation of Project Zero. Others have provided workshops for Massapequa teachers and some, like Ms. Vecchione, have presented at regional and state conferences.
