Mass Quantity Erasers, glue sticks, pencils and boxes of crayons were among the items that became part of a scientific study in Keith Lambert’s sixth-grade classroom at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on October 11th. As part of a lesson that incorporated both science and math, students learned

about mass and matter. Each group was tasked with finding the mass of 10 ordinary objects found in a classroom. Their tools were balance scales and gram weights, which included metal weights in various increments and one-gram colored blocks. After placing an object on one side of the scale,

the students had to add or subtract weights until both sides were even, then record their findings. Lambert said the purpose of the project was to teach them about the difference between mass and weight, and how to collect and organize data.

There are those who contend that things were far simpler before technology invaded our daily lives and made us dependent upon electronic devices glued to our hands. In some respects, yes, absolutely. But the benefits are not to be so lightly dismissed. Case in point: the recent avalanche of new smartphones which have been released. What’s the difference between one model and the next? Is it worth the money invested? In reality, not much, and no. But as a society, we have been conditioned to want the next big thing, at whatever the cost. It’s become more of a status symbol than a matter of functionality.

For me, the selling point of a smartphone, initially, was to have the ability to text using a full keyboard, rather than one button at a time, letter by tedious letter. I was extremely late to the party, in that respect, having held on to my cherished flip phone for far longer than most in my age bracket. But once I upgraded, there was no going back. Fast forward several years, and my motivation isn’t the slightly larger screen, the slightly longer battery life or a new collection of apps and emojis – it is, quite simply, the camera. My love of photography, while always a passion, has never been complemented by an equally-adequate camera. After reading the reviews of the latest iPhone, it seemed to be a no-brainer to invest

the money into a two-forone deal – a state-of-the-art phone coupled with a camera that earned the praises of numerous professional photographers. And so I took the plunge. And it was worth it. All the downfalls the previous camera had been plagued with, eliminated. Low light, zoom, clarity… now vastly improved upon. It may not seem like much to those who yearn for the simplicity of the days of the rotary phone; but, for me, it is everything. And so I embark on my next photographic pursuit, new phone/camera in hand, embracing the technology which surrounds us. Sometimes, the function does outweigh the downfall after all.

Taking Pride Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District has launched a new character education program this year, which began with an exciting pep rally. an activity at recess that was inclusive of all students looking to play. October’s theme is responsibility. Each month the Pride Committee will focus on a different trait and look to honor students who exemplify that characteristic. “We look forward to sharing all of the ways the Lockhart Lions show their pride,” Mr. Scarallo said. “We are always looking for ways to promote this effort and recognize and reward students.”

The Massapequa School District is encouraging creativity and critical thinking with the opening of Makerspace rooms in the six elementary schools. Ribbon-cutting ceremonies were held with technology staff, building administrators and students during the last week of September. Students in fourth through sixth grade can participate in Makerspace activities during their lunch and recess periods. Lockhart Elementary School is also featuring a pilot program for thirdgrade students. Space has been set aside either in the library or a designated classroom at each school. “We are pleased to offer this initiative in Massapequa, which creates a hands-on approach to learning,” said Superintendent Lucille F. Election Comes to Life Massapequa High School students have been talking about the presidential election in their classes for the past year, and on September 27th they got a look at the media’s role in the campaign. The C-SPAN bus, a mobile studio and interactive classroom, came to the school a day after it was at Hofstra University for the debate. Students were able to explore the facility, which includes televisions, computers, cameras and interactive touchscreens. Doug Hemmig, a representative from C-SPAN, spoked to them about the network’s

role in covering the federal government, its use of social media and how the bus is used to conduct interviews. To help students understand government at the local level, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano also visited and talked to students about the services the county provides. “I think it’s great that C-SPAN took some time out of following the candidates around to come to Massapequa High School,” said Brian Trapani, the curriculum associate for social studies. “I want students to see what C-SPAN tries to do

to present our government in an objective, non-biased way.” Trapani said he hopes that the visit will encourage students to become active citizens now, and active members of the political process once they turn 18. Students throughout the district will participate in a mock online vote closer to Election Day. The high school students were also encouraged to enter C-SPAN’s 2017 Student Cam contest, in which they can create a five-to-seven-minute video about the issue that is most important for the president and Congress to address in 2017.

Celebrating the Spectrum Kindergarten students at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District have recently been learning about colors.

Each day over two weeks, they were asked to wear a specifc color, beginning with red and working their way through the hues of the rainbow.

They also created projects corresponding to those colors, such as drawing pictures of the sun when they celebrated yellow.

Distinguished Artists Concert The Town of Oyster Bay 2016-2017 Distinguished Artists Concert kicks off the fall season with a wide variety of performances scheduled at various libraries throughout the Town, Councilman Joseph G. Girl Scouts of Nassau County announced today its upcoming “Golden Flight to Leadership Conference and Reception” will be held on Saturday, November 12th, at Long Island University (LIU). This event will serve as a culmination of the Girl Scouts of Nassau County’s yearlong celebration of the Gold Award’s 100th Anniversary, and it will feature workshops, a celebratory reception, and three esteemed speakers offering insight on female empowerment. Attendees will include Girl Scouts in grades seven through twelve, Girl Scout alumnae, community volunteers and parents. “The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award a Girl Scout can achieve. We are extremely excited to celebrate the achievements of these incredible young women and acknowledge the positive impact they have had on communities throughout the United States,” said Girl Scouts of Nassau County Chief Executive Officer

The Girl Scouts of Nassau County, recently held its Annual STEM Conference to celebrate the fun and excitement of science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). During the conference, female STEM experts worked one-on-one with Girl Scouts of Nassau County to introduce the girls to the scientific world around them. Girl Scouts, ages 1114, participated in hands-on workshops that apply chemistry, geology, engineering, biology, astronomy, design, architecture and geometry in an interactive and engaging way. Parents were also engaged, as they learned how to navigate their daughter’s educational pursuits in STEM. A few of the workshops, offering a variety of different STEM lessons included: using chemistry to create a “Blizzard in a Bottle and a snowflake crystal scene in a jar; using engineering to build a model foundation that would support a building; using geometry to make origami; and using computer-graphic technology to design an internet game. The STEM program is growing in popularity among the Girl Scouts of Nassau County. It was created in an effort to encourage young girls to form an interest in science and technology, inspire critical thinking, while also opening their eyes to the many future STEM-related job opportunities. The Girl Scouts of Nassau County offers multiple STEM initiatives each month and throughout the year.
