Learning Goes Viral Before parents arrived for back-to-school night in Alison Morgan’s thirdgrade classroom at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, their children made them a special surprise. Students used their new Chromebooks and a program called Flipgrid to make short video messages for their parents. The children were asked
to discuss their goals for the school year and what they were enjoying so far about third grade. Parents were then sent a link to view the videos and asked to record a response. Ms. Morgan said she wanted the adults to experience the same technology that their children will be using throughout the year. Flipgrid will support her classroom curriculum in many ways this year.
Students will create video reading logs by discussing their independent reading books and sharing their favorite passages. They will also discuss their science lessons, such as when they recently learned about forces and observed the principles in action during recess. “These short videos make it fun, and I can still keep track of what they’re learning,” Ms. Morgan said.

Fifth-graders took part in a scientific convention at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, in which they studied a creation based upon a popular children’s book. Magnet/STEAM teacher Joanne Markowski made her own Oobleck, a green
slime inspired by the Dr. Seuss book “Bartholomew and the Oobleck.” Students were invited in to observe the slime and feel the gooey substance, which had the properties of both a solid and a liquid. The students formed groups and debated to determine if the Oobleck
was a solid, a liquid, both or neither. They had to use evidence from their observations to support their claims. Ms. Markowski said that by simulating a scientific convention, students learned how laws in science are made.

Cross Country Connection Technology allowed students at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District to connect with their peers across Nassau County and share their thoughts on literature. As part of the Global Read Aloud, an international literacy initiative, Kathy Pullen’s sixth-grade English language arts students participated in a videoconference with a sixth-grade class at
Willets Road School in the East Williston Union Free School District. The exchange, coordinated by Berner technology learning coach Danielle Mammolito, took place using FieldTripZoom. A webcam was set up on each end and video displayed through the Smart Board. The teachers took turns reading one of the 2017 Global Read Aloud choices, “Whoever You Are” by Mem Fox. It is a book
about being accepting of one another’s differences. After the reading, students went on their Chromebooks and shared their thoughts on the book, responding to the questions “What did you notice?” and “What do you wonder?” Through Padlet, they participated in a digital discussion by responding to each other’s posts.

Devouring Knowledge As a way of providing students with additional academic support, Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus offers a Learn at Lunch program. Dedicated teachers are available during each of the four lunch periods to work with ninth-graders in math and science. Students come to Learn at Lunch sessions for many different reasons, including if they missed a day of class, want to practice for a test or need extra support in mastering a concept. They can come just to ask a question or spend the whole period there. “It’s a nice opportunity for extra help inside of the school day,” said teacher Kristen Urban, who leads the math sessions four days a week and supports
students learning algebra and geometry. Ms. Urban works closely with the school’s math teachers to ensure that students are receiving the best support. She incorporates technology by providing online resources that students can access on their Chromebooks or putting sample problems up on the Smart Board that they can work out with markers on the adjacent white board. Alissa Shea said she visits math Learn at Lunch several times each week and likes the one-on-one attention that she receives. “I find it as a helpful resource to stay ahead and on top of my grades,” she said. “I am reviewing what I learned in class and I feel more confident about my math skills.”
Science teacher Lisa Whalen meets with students three days each week, providing support in earth science and biology. She said the Learn at Lunch program is a great resource for students who are now in high school and taking upper-level courses. Some sessions could have as few as one student or as many as 20, especially right before a test. Ms. Whalen said that she makes it a point to meet with every student either individually or in a smallgroup setting. “I don’t teach from behind a desk,” Ms. Whalen said. “I want this to be a warm, comfortable and inviting place for students to come and to learn. I am here to help them with whatever need they have.”
Students in the oceanography course at Massapequa High School recently took a trip to the School of Marine and Atmospheric Science at Stony Brook Southampton. They got to do handson water monitoring and sampling, using equipment to test for dissolved oxygen,
salinity, temperature, bottom sediment and light penetration. Aboard a boat which sailed out into the bay, the young oceanographers participated in teambuilding activity as they pulled in the trawl and observed the crabs they caught and tagged as part

students in 10th through 12th grades, has an extensive academic program in which students have opportunities to challenge themselves with higher-level coursework and explore their passions through a vast array of electives. The school offers more than two dozen Advanced Placement courses, six world languages, robotics and engineering courses, science research, vocal and instrumental musical ensembles and much more. In the Class of 2017, 98 percent of seniors earned a Regents Diploma or higher and 68.5 percent earned a Regents Diploma with Advanced Distinction. The most recent graduates are attending 147 colleges across 27 states including prestigious institutions such as Cornell University, New York University, Penn State, Syracuse University and the U.S. Military Academy. In 2016, Massapequa High School was named to the U.S. News and World Report’s list of Top 500 Public High Schools and Newsweek’s list of America’s Top High Schools. It also received a School of Distinction Award from the New York State Public High School
Athletic Association for its high percentage of scholar athletes, and has been named a New York State Reward School for the past four years. The high school is the second school in the district to be designated as a Blue Ribbon School of Excellence. East Lake Elementary received the honor in 2005. Now in its 35th year, the National Blue Ribbon Schools Program has bestowed recognition on more than 8,500 schools. On November 6th-7th, U.S. Secretary of Education Betsy DeVos and the Department of Education will celebrate with these honorees at an awards ceremony in Washington, D.C. A local celebration is being planned for Oct. 27 at the high school. “The Blue Ribbon award should be shared by all in the Massapequa School District, as the success of our high school students can be attributed to the fine education they receive from the moment they enter our outstanding public schools,” said Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis. “This honor is just further proof that we have exemplary programs, talented and dedicated educators, and students who strive to be the best.”

The Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program is new to fourth grade in the Massapequa School District but it’s not new to fourth-grade students. Last year, they became the first group of thirdgraders to receive foreign language instruction in
elementary school with 20 minutes of Spanish twice a week. As the students moved on to fourth grade this year, they are continuing their regular lessons, and this year’s third-graders are being introduced to the language for the first time. FLES teacher Stacy
Chesloff began instruction for fourth-graders by reviewing some basics from last year through songs and games. During a recent visit to Lockhart Elementary School, students gathered in a circle and threw a ball to each other to practice counting to 10 in Spanish.

Berner Book Lovers Reading was on the mind of Berner Middle School students during summer vacation and they were recently rewarded for their efforts. The Massapequa school hosted a trio of bagel breakfasts for those who successfully completed the summer reading challenge which, according to Curriculum Associate for English Language Arts Mary O’Meara, was 95 percent of the school’s population. Each student had to complete a reflection on his or her chosen book, which served
as an “Admit One” ticket to the breakfast. Because so many students completed the challenge, separate breakfasts were held for sixth-, seventh- and eighth-graders. Principal Jason Esposito, Executive Assistants to the Principal Barbara Lowell and Beth Mullins, and teachers handed out buttered bagels to the accomplished readers. Eighth-grader Kailinn Bernhardt said she read the book “Divergent” by Veronica Roth and said she chose it at the
recommendation of her sister. “I loved the book,” Kailinn said. “There as a lot of adventure in it.” Her classmate, Gianna Susi, chose “Paper Towns” by John Green and said she liked it because “there was a lot of mystery.” “Reading is a lifelong habit and we want students to enjoy what they read,” Mr. Esposito said. “This was a celebration of reading and a celebration of learning, and we are very proud of the students as they always rise to our expectations.”

DOG FEST WALK ‘N ROLL - Local legislators recently joined with Emily Sciaretts, Northeast Regional Director of Canine Companions for Independence and Debra Dougherty at the Canine Companions DogFest Walk ‘n Roll held at Marjorie R. Post Community Park. Canine Companions for Independence is an organization dedicated to enhancing the lives of people with disabilities by providing them with highly trained assistance dogs and ongoing support to ensure quality partnerships. This family and dog-friendly event helps Canine Companions for Independence continue to provide assistance dogs to children, adults and veterans with disabilities.

In this brand new column, Helping You Help Others, we will provide a weekly list of local organizations that you can become involved with. We will also spotlight a local charity as “Charity of the Month” each month to give readers a chance to learn more in depth about various organizations
It seems as though every few weeks there is another natural disaster, more animals sitting lonely in shelters or another homeless person seen on the streets in our town.
“Have you ever really had a teacher? One who saw you as a raw but precious thing, a jewel that, with wisdom, could be polished to a proud shine?” ~ Mitch Albom Last week, I was saddened to learn of the passing of a most cherished teacher, mentor and friend, Mr. Elsesser - “Harry” as he signed the yearly Christmas cards we exchanged. They say that some people leave footprints on your heart… this was most certainly true of the man who took me under his wing way back in 4th grade, and helped me to soar to new heights I never thought possible. Up to that point, I had been a fairly good student, conscientious enough in the academic department, but lacking a bit of the “plays well with others” skills that tend to come with time. Seeing this unfulfilled potential, Mr. Elsesser made it his mission to ensure that I would flourish under his watchful eye.
His class was one of those that you find yourself reflecting upon from time to time with a smile, recalling anecdotes and amusing instances, such as when he would entertain us with stories of his travels - to Africa, the Galapagos Islands, Japan, and beyond. Occasionally, there would be touches of Swahili thrown into the vocabulary lesson for good measure. As I entered fifth grade a better all-around student and person, Mr. E. decided to retire after 30 years of teaching in the Lindenhurst school district. Saddened to see him go, and promising to keep in touch, my mother - who had also been a student in the district when Mr. Elsesser began his tenure there started a yearly correspondence, exchanging Christmas cards and keeping each other updated on the happenings in our respective lives. Years later, I took over this tradition and began sending my own correspondence, filling Mr.
E. in on the comings and goings of college and, eventually, my blossoming career. How proud he was to learn that I was utilizing my love of writing and had become a weekly columnist for my old hometown paper. Often, he would call my desk at the office, greeting me with, Is this Miss Jamie Lynn Ryan, the reporter?? We would chat about how work was going, the family, had I seen any of my old classmates lately, what I had for lunch… and always, without fail, as we were getting ready to hang up, he would say, Send hugs and kisses to your parents, and of course to you too. What a wonderful man, and what a treasured friendship, one sustained for over a quarter of a century. How lucky I was that our paths crossed in life, and how blessed I am to have so many fond memories to reflect upon, and remember with a smile. May you rest in peace, Mr. E… Love and kisses, Jamie
