To help students understand government at the local level, Nassau County Executive Ed Mangano also visited and talked to students about the services the county provides. “I think it’s great that C-SPAN took some time out of following the candidates around to come to Massapequa High School,” said Brian Trapani, the curriculum associate for social studies. “I want students to see what C-SPAN tries to do to present our government in an objective, non-biased way.” Trapani said he hopes that the visit will encourage students to become active citizens now, and active members of the political process once they turn 18.

Students throughout the district will participate in a mock online vote closer to Election Day. The Challenger Program provides special needs children and young adults an opportunity to enjoy the full benefits of Little League baseball at a level structured to their abilities. Massapequa High School students have been talking about the presidential election in their classes for the past year, and on September 27th they got a look at the media’s role in the campaign. The C-SPAN bus, a mobile studio and interactive classroom, came to the school a day after it was at Hofstra University for the debate. Students were able to explore the facility, which includes televisions, computers, cameras and interactive touchscreens. Doug Hemmig, a representative from C-SPAN, spoked to them about the network’s role in covering the federal government, its use of social media and how the bus is used to conduct interviews.

HURRICANE SEMINAR - The Town of Oyster Bay’s annual Hurricane-Emergency Management Seminar was held at the Massapequa West End Firehouse. The purpose of the seminar is to inform residents on how to prepare for a hurricane or other weather emergency, when to evacuate, what to do when a storm hits and how to best respond during the aftermath. The program was conducted by leaders in the fields of meteorology and emergency management led by Town of Oyster Bay’s own weather expert Leonard B. Symons, a Town Deputy Commissioner, who has trained at the National Hurricane Center in Miami.

Signs. They’re everywhere. You need only to look, and take notice. A visit from a butterfly to commemorate a birthday… the timely appearance of a nest of robin’s eggs… a rainbow arching over the sky… There are those who simply appreciate these occurrences as a token of nature at its finest and leave it at that. And then there are those who see it as representative of something far deeper, and more spiritual in nature. Sure, anything can be made to “fit,” if you are so inclined; but there are certain phenomena, if you will, that simply cannot be denied and leave you shaking your head in wonderment. Case in point: I recently found myself driving on Sunrise Highway, as I often

do, when I happened to focus in on the license plate of the vehicle in front of me. It read “RIP PAL.” For those who may not know, I recently lost my grandfather – my “Pal” – as I fondly called him, earlier this year. The odds of that particular combination of letters, traveling in front of me at that particular time, leading up to what would have been his 90th birthday this month… it was pretty mind blowing at the time. As soon as I was stationary, I quickly texted my mom to tell her about my encounter, still incredulous at the coincidence. No sooner did I get out of the car to head in to pick up dinner, when I was met with another “sign.” As I stood on line waiting to be helped, my eyes fell on the nametag of the girl behind the counter, one I had noticed there countless times

before. It read “Ventura” … my grandfather’s last name. Whether it was her first name, last name, I wasn’t certain. But it didn’t matter. What are the odds? Maybe it was just a coincidence. Two, in fact. Within the space of about five minutes. Both having to do with my grandpa. Perhaps just a stroke of luck. But, to me, it was a sign. Of what, exactly, I don’t know. But these subtle reminders of those who have passed on are around us always, if we only choose to pay attention to them. And I do, always. They say signs come to those who believe in them, those who are open to accept them for what they are – whether it provides a moment of comfort or brings to mind a happy memory. We can certainly all use more of those. Anxiously awaiting the next one...

She also cited the severe consequences that teenagers could face for harassing others through the internet, texting or video gaming, known as cyberbullying. Officer Galvin noted that both schools and the police take these issues very seriously and children who feel they are being bullied or know of another student being bullied should tell an adult. “The message that she provides is always well received and always on target,” said Principal Jason Esposito. “The kids leave with a greater sense of awareness about what cyber responsibility is.” Health teacher Denise Robertson organized the program, as well as parent presentation that night. Students and their parents were encouraged to talk to each other at home about online responsibility. Through Berner’s BRAVE program — Bullying Reduction AntiViolence Education — follow-up discussions will be held in classes with the school social worker about the importance being an “Upstander,” which is someone who stands up against bullying. School officials noted the importance of internet safety now that all students in seventh grade and up have district-issued Chromebooks.

Nearly 7,000 students in the Massapequa School District headed back to the classroom with new backpacks, school supplies and a new focus on learning. Students in grades 1-12 returned on September 6th while kindergartners, in keeping with Massapequa tradition, started the following day. Students greeted each other with hugs and high-fives as parents snapped photos to capture their children’s first-day moments. Students said they looked forward to settling into their new classrooms, meeting their teachers, reuniting with friends and, most importantly, learning. “It’s wonderful to see our schools buzzing with excitement as we welcome

New programs include third-grade Spanish, MakerSpaces for fourththrough sixth-graders with tools such as 3-D printers, and expanded high school course offerings including Advanced Placement

Capstone, AP Computer Science Principles and Mandarin Chinese 4. Members of the Class of 2029 settled into their classrooms for the first time on September 7th and were greeted warmly by their teachers. “I love making new friends,” said Birch Lane kindergarten teacher Tara Mathers, who has made hundreds of “best friends” in her 15 years in the district. Parents of kindergartners stayed for the Boo Hoo Breakfast after sending their little ones off to school. For parents looking to take an active role in their child’s education, the first few weeks of the school year are filled with back-to-school nights and PTA meetings.

ELA Curriculum Associate

The Massapequa School District announces the appointment of a new curriculum associate for English Language Arts. Mary O’Meara, who returns to the district where she began her educational

career, takes over the position on October 13th. Ms. O’Meara began teaching ELA in December 2000 at Alfred G. Berner Middle School. For four years she served as the ELA chairperson, supervising the creation of a literacy workshop. She later was the district chairperson of ELA, Reading and Library Media in the Hewlett-Woodmere School District, and for the past year has been assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction in the Amityville Union Free School District. As curriculum associate,

Ms. O’Meara will oversee the entire ELA program from kindergarten through 12th grade. She resides in Lindenhurst. “Our mission is for our students to develop an appreciation of the written word, and Ms. O’Meara brings a wealth of knowledge and a great spirit to lead our ELA team,” said Superintendent Lucille F. Nassau BOCES Regional Summer School (RSS) completed another year of successful programming, helping Massapequa students to improve themselves in everything from core academics to the arts. Since its inception, the six-week summer program has grown to serve nearly 20,000 students through 62 programs in 28 districts across Nassau County. In the past four years alone, enrollment has doubled. The largest and perhaps most essential component of RSS is credit recovery, helping students who are struggling with the state’s increasingly rigorous common core curriculum to make up what they were unable to complete during the school year. A key element of this is the intensive two-week Regent Review courses, which prepare students to retake the Regents exam in August and improve their scores. With recent changes to the Regents designed to better reflect the common core, more students than ever

are retaking the exams. This year more than 1,200 students are using RSS to prepare for the Common Core Algebra Regent Exam. In addition to critical academic support, RSS offers a full range of enrichment programs for younger students. There are classes in everything from reading, writing and science, to sports, art and music. Adventurous students can explore a variety of interests including television production, cooking and gymnastics. Ariana Fang of the Massapequa UFSD, who will become a sophomore this fall, said that the Regional Summer School program helped her to get a handle on her math scores. “I took both the geometry and algebra Regents during the school year and I wasn’t happy with my grades,” Arianna said. “The summer courses offered through Nassau BOCES helped me to focus. The individual and group work is very important and helpful. I’m convinced that when I take

the Regents again this year I will get better grades.” Fellow Massapequa sophomore Eddie Dmuth said he entered the RSS program because “I wanted to get my grades up.” He wasn’t disappointed. “With each practice Regents that I’ve taken, my grade has gone up. I have a better understanding of the material now. It was a smaller class size, which makes it easier to concentrate, and I really liked the teacher.” “Regional Summer School enables districts to provide an extended school year for those students who need a variety of supports,” RSS Principal Judith Hynes says of the importance of the program. “Nassau BOCES provides districts with a team of 1,500 dedicated professionals who deliver direct, hands-on support on a daily basis. The quality and cost efficiency of our programs is second to none and districts are eager to provide these opportunities for their community.”

Residents Asked to Vote On Tuesday, October 18th, residents within the Massapequa School District will be asked to vote on the sale of the building located at 1 Carmans Road to Nassau BOCES for $9 million. Included in the proposed sale are the physical school building and the immediate surrounding land, which totals 6.2 acres. The district will retain ownership of the adjoining athletic fields, totaling 3.6 acres, for continued use by student athletic teams and community organizations. Built in 1955, the Carman Road building was used by the district as an elementary school until its closing in the late 1970s, when Nassau

BOCES began leasing it. For close to 40 years, the Carman Road School has provided comprehensive educational services for students with multiple physical and developmental disabilities, ages 5 to 21. If the sale is successful, the $9 million proceeds will be placed within a tax reduction reserve and used to lower tax increases over the course of 10 years. In New York State, a reserve for tax reduction is for the gradual use of the proceeds of the sale of school district real property. “We believe that the sale of the Carman Road School is in the best interest of both parties, and, of course, our taxpayers,” said Massapequa

Superintendent of Schools Lucille Iconis. “The transfer of this building to a valued and trusted educational partner like Nassau BOCES ensures the property’s continued use for education while retaining the athletic fields for use by our students and residents.” If the sale is approved by Massapequa residents on Oct. 18, Nassau County residents will need to vote and approve the purchase of the building by Nassau BOCES before the purchase can be official and the title transferred. The referendum will take place on Tuesday, October 18th from 6 a.m. to 9 p.m.

Expanding their learning environment beyond four walls, a group of Massapequa High School students recently turned nature into their classroom. The Advanced Placement Environmental Science class visited the Massapequa Preserve on September 30th, spending several hours participating in a hands-on study of their local ecosystem through the Brookhaven National Laboratory’s “A Day in the Life” program. Representatives from Brookhaven, the Central Pine Barrens Commission and New York State Department of Environmental Conservation were on hand to assist the students. Many of the juniors and seniors donned waterproof pants as they stepped into Massapequa Creek to

collect water samples and dirt, or cast large fishing nets. They studied water chemistry, recording data such as oxygen levels and temperature. As they pulled in the nets, they got a feel for its plant and animal life. The group documented the types of fish that call the stream home before setting them free. “I like that it’s outside of the classroom and it’s hands on, so you can actually see stuff,” senior Isabelle Frawley said of the experience. Hundreds of students from high schools across Long Island took part in the program to analyze various bodies of water. Through this “citizen science” approach, the data collected by students will be maintained and shared by Brookhaven. Teacher Thomas Dempsey said

Nature Comes Alive that this was Massapequa High School’s first time participating in the program, and his students will return every fall to collect new information and note changes from year to year. His class also raises trout, which are released into the creek. “It’s unique on Long Island to have this,” Mr. Dempsey said of Brookhaven’s program. “It gives them a lot of real-life exposure to how science is done and it puts them in touch with professionals in the field.” Mr. Dempsey said that the data collected by his students would also be used for a class research project later in the year. In the spring, his students will get together with the other high schools that participated.
