Welcome to October, the month when thoughts turn from late summer sunshine and seaside walks to apples and pumpkins and all things autumn. ‘Tis the season before THE season of holiday madness, that lull when – aside from Halloween – one can simply enjoy the crisp air while taking a hay ride with friends, navigating a corn maze or picking up some local produce at the neighborhood farm stand. Personally, I am a girl of summer, basking in

the glow of sunsets and days spent at the beach, of aimless wandering along our many shores in search of hidden oases of beauty. But autumn has its own special unique charm as well. There is nothing quite like feeling the crunch of freshly fallen leaves under your boots, of cuddling up with a good book and some hot apple cider donuts. This is the time of respite, that period of transition from long golden days to chilly evenings, the calm before the storm of feasting with family, of decking the halls

They were involved in panel discussions led by political correspondents, witnessed historical reenactments of the

1872 and 1972 debates, learned about the role social media is playing in this election, saw a video art display on the issues at stake and participated in a mock vote. The students were also in the background as reporters from major networks gave live updates. The group was led by social studies teacher and Mock Trial adviser Daniel Bachman. Their day concluded by participating in a debate party, where they were able to watch a live feed of the debate in an auditorium on campus with students from other area high schools.

The students said it was exciting to hear the media’s commentary. They enjoyed listening to predictions about the debates from political analysts and then watching to see what happened. Although they are only 16 and 17 and unable to vote in this election, they were encouraged to educate themselves on the issues now and to become involved in the political process when they turn 18. “It showed the importance of voting and having your voice be heard in government,” Cresser said.

East Lake Elementary School student Christian Mollica knows how to capture the moment. The Massapequa School District is pleased to announce that the sixthgrader has been named a winner in the 20152016 New York State PTA Reﬂections photo contest. Christian’s photo will be included in the third annual NYS PTA Reﬂections Art Roadshow

exhibit, which begins with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on October 15th at Monroe 1 BOCES in Rochester. All artwork will remain on display for public viewing through October 28th. This year’s contest theme was “Let Your Imagination Fly.” Christian’s picture was of his dog dressed up as Harry Potter. The student said he has been interested in photography for two years, and loves

taking pictures of people and animals. “Christian is a model student inside the classroom and outside the classroom, and his talents were on full display in the PTA Reﬂections contest,” said East Lake Principal Thomas McKillop. “We’re very proud of his submission and his accomplishment.”

Rising to New Heights It wasn’t just about building the tallest structure at East Lake Elementary School. It was about learning the fundamentals of design. Fourth-graders in the Massapequa School District’s Elementary Magnet Program have been studying architecture and recently competed to see who could create the tallest

and sturdiest structures. Teacher Lisa Gennardo began by reading “Iggy Peck, Architect” by Andrea Beaty to the students. She then split the class up into groups and tasked them with building towers using nothing by newspapers and tape. The structures had to be free standing and could not be secured to the desks. The teams got points for

creativity, cooperation, communication and tower height. Gennardo stressed the importance of a strong foundation. “It teaches them the basics of architecture,” she said. “They’re working collaboratively and they’re discussing strategies. It’s all about problem-solving and engineering.”

her dedication to providing the students with an inspirational message at the conclusion of the video conference will be valued by our students,” said Brian Trapani, the district’s curriculum associate for social studies. “Her story, and this experience, should provide our students with a sense of understanding September 11th, 2001, national pride, empathy and dedication to go forward as active citizens.” The video conference was coordinated by Siegel and librarian Jill O’Connor, and was an opportunity for students to not only learn about the events and historical significance of 9/11, but also interact with people who can help them truly understand the personal loss so many people felt on that day, and the days and years that followed. The high school began the day with a commemorative announcement and moment of silence. Students throughout the district were encouraged to wear red, white and blue, and teachers in grades 5-12 led discussions in social studies classes which focused on service and sacrifice.

On September 9th, seniors in Laura Siegel’s government classes gathered in the library, where the video conference was set up using a Smart Board. Sophia Prashad, a program associate with the Tribute Center, took the students through a slideshow as she discussed both the 1993 and 2001 terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center, the 15-year process to clear debris and rebuild the site, the impact of the attacks today, and the health effects on rescuers. She also talked about the September 11th museum that was created, and the memorials in place to honor victims, including how the footprints of the Twin Towers were turned into reﬂective pools. The students also heard from Ann, the widow of a New York City firefighter who died while rescuing people from one of the towers. She spoke of her “personal loss in the midst of an international tragedy,” and how she now volunteers with the Tribute Center. “Her willingness to be so forthcoming with her story of personal loss, and

Tax Collection Closed Oyster Bay Receiver of Taxes James J. Stefanich wishes to notify town residents that the 2016 General Tax Collection Warrant has been closed, and all related records have been turned over to the Nassau County Treasurer. The original warrant specified that $530,914,139.33 was to be collected to support Nassau County, Town of Oyster Bay, and special tax districts. Assessment reductions and tax cancellations amounted to $135,840.96 (0.025%). Nassau County’s portion was $252,013,195.04

(48%). The Town of Oyster Bay’s portion was $95,959,448.57 (18%), and the special tax district’s portion was $173,129,409.11 (33%). A list of delinquent property payments was reported to the County Treasurer, amounting to $9,676,245.65 (1.8%). Receiver Stefanich noted that property owners with delinquent taxes would be contacted by the Nassau County Treasurer’s office. Owners will be receiving letters specifying taxes owed along with applicable penalties and late payment fees.

The 2016-2017 School Tax levy bill printing will commence on October 1st, and mailing will start in early October. Receiver Stefanich asks property owners to be patient when calling the Tax Office for information on property taxes due to the usual high volume of calls received at the beginning of a new tax collection. Residents are requested to have the school district, section, block and lot numbers of the property in question available. This information is listed on the tax bill and on the property deed.

Teachers and staff in the Massapequa School District were welcomed back to school with a healthy dose of laughter and positive energy as motivational speaker Sam Glenn took to the stage during Superintendent’s Conference Day on September 1st. Photo courtesy of: Massapequa School District Although students in Katelyn Mulvey’s class at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District have been together for two years, they wanted to get to know each other a little better. This is second year Mulvey has taught the same group of students, now third-graders, and decided to split the class into groups of two asking them to dig deeper into

themselves. They created large colorful Venn diagrams, which are two interlocking circles. In the middle, the students wrote items that they agreed on, and on each side wrote things that make them different. This included personality traits, hobbies and likes, such as their favorite colors and sports teams. The bottom of each “All About the Two of Us” poster included a picture

of two students. Mulvey said that Venn diagrams are a common tool in her classroom for comparing and contrasting, and she uses them frequently in science, social studies and reading. “If you learn how to do it properly, it lends itself to any subject,” she said. “The students did a fantastic job on these.”

She then announced two recognitions that she attributes to that mindset. For the first time, Massapequa High School has made “Newsweek’s” list of “America’s Top 500 Public High Schools.” Massapequa ranked at 401 and was 21 public high schools on Long Island to make the list. Iconis was equally delighted to share that Massapequa was awarded the NYSSMA Presidential Citation Award, the highest distinction bestowed upon a music education program. The Brothers Grimm Harrington, performed in the show on September 23rd and 24th. The comedic play is about the origin of the Grimm brothers’ fairy tales, where various stories intersect, and is one of the most popular nonmusicals performed in high schools. The show was performed as a Theater in the Round, where members of the

audience sat right on the stage. “The students had an experience with a nontraditional performance space,” Mr. Harrington said, “and the audience had an intimate theatrical experience.” The theater department’s next production will be a musical in March.

The Massapequa School District has announced the selection of the top two students in the graduating class of 2017. Daniel Urli has been named the valedictorian at Massapequa High School for achieving the highest grade point average, and Christopher Hadsall will be the salutatorian. Urli has taken 14 Advanced Placement

courses, is treasurer of Students Against Destructive Decisions, plays varsity soccer and is a member of the National and Spanish honor societies. He plans to study engineering. Hadsall is president of the Class of 2017, captain of the cross-country and track and field teams, a member of the band, and has been selected to the
