struggled to answer. Had you asked if I could write, I would have shrugged my shoulders and given you an “I dunno” glance. Younger women in our culture are often conditioned to believe that our value lies in youth and beauty. It’s an unfortunate societal ill that keeps so many young women from developing a richness of character, a boldness of spirit, and from nurturing our most precious abilities. Shortly after turning thirty, I conducted one of my first interviews as an entertainment journalist, with The View co-host, Joy Behar. Here I was, thinking I was a mature adult, when Joy said to me, “You know, your thirties is a great time to be honest with yourself so that your forties can be wonderful.” I realized that, to her, I was but a child. I was perplexed by her statement then, but I understand it now. It was in my thirties that I began to write professionally, I began to delve into reading, and I read everything I could get my hands on. I started keeping a journal, and I set about the business of getting to know myself, because

In my early twenties I transitioned from self-avowed tomboy to ultra-feminine girly girl, seemingly overnight, thanks to nature taking its course and queuing in to the fact that my appearance brought me attention. My visage not only brought compliments, but also some much-needed pocket money, both during and after college, when I found work as a model. I can even recall on one occasion, literally stopping traffic. No, I’m not kidding. A gentleman stopped his car in the middle of a busy street in Brooklyn to attempt to flirt with me as I was crossing the bustling thoroughfare, bringing the traffic behind him to a midafternoon crawl. That was twentythree years ago. I was twenty-one years old. When I look back on those years that seem like a lifetime ago, the shell may have been spectacular, but inside, I’m afraid, things were not. Had you asked me who I was back then, I likely would have
I had been a virtual stranger to myself in my twenties. It was also in my thirties that I got married, had my son, lost my grandparents, got divorced, and had to pick myself up and dust myself off. Life happened, and it stripped away the varnish and revealed character, humor, creativity, compassion and depth. In my twenties I gleaned satisfaction from being considered the hottest person in the room. In my mid-thirties, I began to experience a feeling of insecurity at the realization that I will never be twenty-one again and will most likely never be the hottest one in the room. Now, when I enter a room, I am aware that my skin is not quite as flawless, my waist not quite as tiny, and I have a few wrinkles under my belt; not to mention my broken nose (Long story! It involves a six-year old, a Shih Tzu and a toy). But if you were to ask me how I feel now, my feeling is that I would much rather be the most interesting person in the room.

Massapequa Literacy Supervisor Cindy Gervasi, an experienced reading specialist and educator, has joined the Massapequa School District as the supervisor of literacy. In her position, she will supervise elementary, middle and high school reading teachers, as well as elementary literacy coaches. Ms. Gervasi, a resident of Franklin Square, was an elementary reading specialist for 12 years in Valley Stream School District 13. Prior to that, she taught first and third grades during
her four years at Our Lady Council and ASCD. of the Blessed Sacrament School in Bayside, Queens. Tackling L.I.’s Opioid Crisis from opioid-related drug overdoses. YESCCC has been front and center, combating the opioid crisis, and delivers free opioid prevention education and Naloxone training to Massapequa’s local governments, schools, organizations, parents, and residents. Naloxone is an opioid antagonist that is used to temporarily reverse the effects of an opioid overdose; namely slowed or stopped breathing. Expanding the awareness and availability of this medication is a key part of the public health response to the opioid epidemic. Naloxone is a safe antidote to a suspected overdose, and when given in time, can save a life (Surgeon General of the United
States Public Health Service). Since 1997, YESCCC has worked with the Massapequa Takes Action Coalition (MTAC) to ensure Massapequa’s children, teens and young adults grow up healthy and make safe choices during adolescence. Old Westbury Gardens will extend its existing World War I exhibit, The Great War: Portraits of Privilege, Duty and Sacrifice. The exhibit, which launched in March 2018, was designed to commemorate the 100th anniversary of the end of the war. In addition to the exhibit, Old Westbury Gardens will present a series of speakers to explore the War’s effect on the lives of Americans, rolling-out The Great War: Lecture Series, beginning Saturday, October 7, 2018, at 2p.m. The Great War: Lecture Series will offer interesting insights into the war effort from the perspective of Long Islanders and former estate owner, John S. Phipps and his family. Presented by several high-profile academics, professors and historians, the lecture series is yet another way Old Westbury Gardens focuses on providing guests with a unique and immersive historical experience. “We’re thrilled to extend

Public Plea to Halt LIRR Fare Hike NYS Senate Majority Delegation called on MTA to Protect LIRR riders from a fare increase. On Monday, September 17th, Senate Majority Leader John Flanagan (2nd Senate District) was joined by the Senate Majority’s Long Island Delegation at a press conference at the Bethpage Train Station to call for the Metropolitan Transportation Authority
(MTA) to put any proposed 2019 fare hike on hold until it makes measurable improvements in its service, equipment failures and delays. The press conference introduced legislation sponsored by Senator Elaine Phillips (7th Senate District), and Assemblyman Dean Murray (3rd Assembly District), to protect commuters
from facing even more disruptions due to the LIRR’s loss of any revenue. The delegation, led by Senator Phillips, also established a petition drive that enables constituents to voice their disgust that the LIRR would increase fares while they continue to suffer from delays and canceled trains.

(NAPSI)—With a growing aging population, the amount of family caregivers in the United States is also on the rise. There are nearly 45 million people who serve as a caregiver for a family member or friend who is 50 or older. Serving as a caregiver can be rewarding but difficult. Often, caregivers are unaware of local aging resources that might be able to assist them. The Eldercare Locator is
Ed Hoffman, a physical education teacher at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, has been named the 2018 Middle School Physical Education Teacher of the Year. The honor was bestowed upon him by the New York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance. In addition to teaching, Mr. Hoffman is the physical education chairman and athletic coordinator for Berner. He oversees the school’s staff of nine physical education teachers, and intramural and interscholastic athletic programs. The statewide award recognizes dedication to professional excellence. It is given to a teacher who has demonstrated leadership and has a reputation for exemplary work. Mr. Hoffman called his selection “a great honor.” Mr. Hoffman is a 1988 graduate of Massapequa High School. He received a bachelor’s degree in physical education from SUNY Cortland and taught
at a middle school in the Bronx before being accepted into a graduate assistant program at California State University at Fullerton, where he earned his master’s degree in kinesiology and exercise science. This is his 24th year in Massapequa, having taught one year at Fairfield Lockhart and Unqua elementary schools before moving to Berner. “The middle school physical education curriculum has changed tremendously in the past two decades,” Mr. Hoffman explained. Classes used to primarily focus on the rules and skills of team sports. Now the program includes many individual or partner activities, with a strong emphasis on personal physical fitness. “One of our biggest goals is to have students find activities that they enjoy and can pursue outside of school, so they can be healthy and happy,” he said. Mr. Hoffman has helped write the district’s physical education curriculum at all levels and has increased the use of technology in the program. Students measure their physical activity on heart rate monitors and pedometers, and use their Chromebooks to view health and fitness videos or take personal health assessments. He has also incorporated character education lessons into physical education classes. As

Head of the Class of 2018/2019 Massapequa High School has announced its top two graduates for the Class of 2019. Nino Baghashvili was named valedictorian
with a grade point average of 101.26, and Ariana Fang earned salutatorian honors with a 99.94 GPA. Nino was born in the
country of Georgia and moved to Massapequa in fourth-grade, attending Fairfield Elementary School. During her time
Nino was named a 2019 National Merit Scholarship semifinalist. Ariana attended Unqua Elementary School and has also been active at Massapequa High School, with participation in Mock Trial, Science Olympiad, the Poparazzi string ensemble, Chief’s Challenge, Health Care Explorers Club, National Honor Society and the
National Chinese Honor Society, in addition to taking 13 AP courses. Her summer included involvement in a highlyselective research program at Cold Spring Harbor Laboratories. She has been studying the use of crisper technology for cancer associated fibroblasts, and her mentor scientist is a Massapequa resident with children in the district.
