It’s funny how many different forms the term “friendship” can take on these days. Gone is the time when having a new “best friend” every year of elementary school was the norm, replaced instead by a handful of fairly close friends and an infinite number of what can only be classified as acquaintances; those you may travel in similar circles with but, once the circle is broken, severed is the superficial connection forged as well. Even among those close friends, there are breakdowns. There are those who you may only see sporadically to grab dinner or catch a movie with, yet when you do get together, it’s like no time has elapsed at all. Then there are the friends you embark on daylong
adventures with, aimlessly wandering the streets of New York City, the beaches of Long Island and everything in between. These are the days of memories made, of endless photographs snapped… the days you will fondly recall years from now, and smile. I recently came across a quote: “Photographs are proof that once, even if just for a heartbeat, everything was perfect.” Not only does it speak to my personal love of photography as a whole, but to that notion of reflecting upon moments and savoring them. Sure, it is equally important to be present in the moment and experience it fully; but pictures have the ability to preserve an instant in a way that memory alone cannot always fulfill. Hence, my albums full of fun and silliness, of candid
moments and scenic shores. Of friends, both the lifelong variety and those who may only make a guest appearance along the way. And of course, Buddy, my very special finned friend, who holds a unique place in my heart the way that only a pet can. He may be contained in a bowl, but his personality shines through, and the connection is just as real as those established with friends of the “Human” variety. Month after month, I celebrate his “birthday,” the anniversary of his time in my home, along with the standard holidays that we have been fortunate to share with him. Friends may come and go, and the memories may fade over time; but in the many heartbeats in between, perfection can be found. You need only know where to look.

seniors were handed Chromebooks for the first time on August 30th and 31st. This year’s incoming students at Berner Middle School were given their devices on Aug. 26 and 29. “The primary purpose of our ‘Learning… Anytime, Anywhere’ oneto-one platform is to allow students and teachers efficient and effective access to instructional and communication resources,” said Robert Schilling, executive director for assessment, student data and technology services. “This fall marks a milestone, in that all grades 7 through 12 are now involved in this platform.” Chromebooks are laptop-like devices designed to access the Internet using the Google Chrome operating system. Their speed, low cost and the ease of use have made them a device of choice in education worldwide. Countless Internet-based resources are now readily available to Chromebook users, such as Google Docs, which allows students and teachers the ability
to work on the editing process together, each from their own machine. “At the secondary level, it’s pretty much the primary tool in the classroom,” Mr. Kemnitzer said of the Chromebooks. “We believe in how instructional technology enhances and redesigns the learning experience.” Secondary teachers all received Chromebooks prior to their students and received professional development on how to effectively utilize web-based resources in instruction. Mr. Kemnitzer said that since the one-to-one initiative began three years ago, some teachers have moved to paperless classrooms. Wireless capability has been upgraded throughout the secondary schools to support the use of these devices. The district also has 750 Chromebooks available throughout its six elementary schools for use during the day, with plans in place to upgrade WiFi in those buildings this year.

The Massapequa School District is expanding its one-to-one Chromebook initiative for the 20162017 school year, which puts a device in the hands of all secondary students. This is part of the district’s mission to elevate learning through “anytime, anywhere access” to information. This marks the first year that all seventh- through 12th-grade students in the district will have a Google Chromebook, which they can use at home and at school. Ten Massapequa High School student-musicians have been selected to represent the district at the national and state levels this fall. The New York State School Music Association has accepted seven students for the All-State conference from December 1st-4th in Rochester. Massapequa’s Cub Scout Pack 590 kicked off the scouting year this past weekend with a fun-filled fishing trip aboard the Yankee III out of Captree State Park. The ship pulled away from the dock at 7:30 a.m. for four hours of fishing in the Great South Bay. “The sky was blue, the water was calm, and the smiles were wide,” said Cubmaster Bill Leisen, after the ship docked at 11:30 a.m. On Sunday, the Pack joined Boy Scout Troop
590 and participated in the September 11th Memorial Ceremony that was held at the Towers of Freedom 9/11 Memorial in John J. Burns Park. “Participating in the memorial service was a great honor for the pack,” said Bill Leisen. “It shows the boys the importance of remembering and honoring those who gave their lives for our great country, as well as the importance of taking part in community events.” Pack 590 will be holding their first open house
of the year on Sunday, September 25th, at 5:30 p.m. at the fire ring at Wantagh Park on Merrick Road in Wantagh. All boys in grades 1 through 4 who are interested in joining are invited to attend. More than 6,500 students auditioned for this honor last spring at solo and ensemble
festivals throughout the state. In late August, approximately 890 students were selected for NYSSMA’s All-State music conference. Three Massapequa students have performed their way into the National Association for Music Education’s 2016 AllNational Honor Ensembles, setting a new musical milestone for the district. Camryn Buonamassa (Alto 1), Frank Sacino (Tenor 2) and Luciana Vernola (Alto 2) will be among the 670 talented high-school music students from across the country to participate at a gala concert on November 13th at the Gaylord Texan Resort Hotel and Convention Center in Grapevine, Texas. The three have previously earned spots in the NYSSMA All-State Chorus. They will participate in a choir of 350 students at the NAfME festival.
