This month, Nassau BOCES Regional Summer School (RSS) completed another year of successful programming, helping Nassau County students to improve themselves in everything from core academics to the arts. Since its inception, the six-week summer program has grown to serve more than 17,000 students through 58 programs in 23 districts across the county. In the past year alone, enrollment has increased by 25 percent. The largest and perhaps most essential component of RSS is credit recovery, helping students who are struggling with core academics to make up what they were unable to complete during the school year. A key element of this is the intensive two-week Regents course, which prepares students to retake the Regents exam in August and

improve their scores. With recent changes to the Regents designed to better reflect the common core curriculum, more students than ever are retaking the exam. This year more than 1,200 students are using RSS to prepare for the Common Core Algebra Regents. “It’s extremely high stakes for these students,” RSS Principal Judith Hynes said of the importance of the program. “They cannot graduate without passing the Regents exam.” This is why, according to Hynes, they are fortunate to have the RSS staff. “We have a team of 1,000 dedicated professionals providing direct, hands-on support on a daily basis.” In addition to critical academic support, RSS offers a full range of enrichment programs for younger students. There are classes in everything from reading, writing

and science to sports, art and music. Adventurous students can explore a variety of interests including television production, cooking and gymnastics. “It’s a little like summer camp, but educational,” Principal Hynes said of the enrichment program. There are important lessons involved in the fun, such as bullying prevention and good citizenship.” “Nassau BOCES takes on the administrative burden and lessens the cost of summer programs, giving many districts the opportunity to offer a program they could not afford to offer on their own,” Ms. Hynes said of RSS as a whole. “We provide students the chance to improve their abilities, to succeed in academics, and to enjoy enrichment opportunities they normally wouldn’t have.”

In an effort to increase detection rates and avoid further burdens on the lives of Alzheimer’s patients and their families, ADRC is asking everyone to participate in the AMARANTH Study. This clinical research study is targeted to men and women between the ages of 55 and 85 who are experiencing gradual and progressive change in memory function over the last six months. The voluntary study will evaluate the safety and effectiveness of an investigational drug in slowing down the progression of Alzheimer’s disease To determine if individuals qualify for the clinical research study, they must undergo a pre-qualification screener. The results of the pre-qualification will determine if the person may be referred to a local center to discuss the study in further detail. Mary Douglas, owner of South Shore School of Dance, is celebrating her 29th anniversary of teaching. A mother of 21 year-old twins, she wanted to create a unique school where preschoolers receive the love, nurturing and encouragement that they needed, while older students benefit from her professional background and the “world class” training she is able to offer. The result is a very unique school, where

only mothers teach the very youngest children. A certified, registered teacher with the Royal Academy of Dance in London, Mrs. Douglas is included in a worldwide registry of outstanding teachers. In 1994, she was invited to Russia as part of an American delegation of the Royal Academy to visit the famous Vaganova Institute, training ground to such famous dancers as Mikhail Baryshnikov. While the majority of her students study dance for enjoyment, poise and exercise, she has produced scholarship winners. Emilia Thuma was accepted to the famous School of American Ballet, the training school for the New York City Ballet, received a generous scholarship to NYU for dance education and an academic assistance

scholarship to Hofstra. Sara Jansen received a full scholarship to the New York Theatre Ballet, and performed professionally in New York. Sara also danced with the American Ballet Theatre at Lincoln Center in Romeo and Juliet, and, in July 2004, was invited to dance with the Richmond Ballet in Virginia. The studio now competes regionally and nationally as well. Classes are offered in ballet, tap, jazz, hip hop/ street dance, modern, Irish step, acro for boys and girls, musical theatre for boys and girls and Terrific Toddler Time for boys and girls.

So I recently decided that, seeing as my obsession with photography has only grown stronger over the years, I should probably invest in an actual camera one of these days – you know, the kind with a lens, adjustable settings, the whole deal. Smartphones are great and all, but realistically, there are certain images that would be better served by something a bit more… professional. Massapequa School District was awarded a bond rating upgrade from Aa2 to Aa1 from Moody’s Investor Service, ranking it among the top districts in the state for its prudent financial practices. The new rating entitles the district to lower interest rates, which will save hundreds of thousands of dollars in interest costs on district bond issue borrowings, according to Deputy Superintendent Alan Adcock. M a s s a p e q u a ’s upgrade was considered particularly noteworthy as many jurisdictions are experiencing credit downgrades, resulting from dwindling fund balances and constraints under the New York State property tax cap, the district’s financial advisors pointed out. According to the Moody’s credit report, the district earned

the upgrade because of its “stable operating performance, sound reserve and liquidity levels, sizable tax base, strong resident wealth indicators, and low debt burden with a manageable capital program.” Moody’s also credited the district’s strong management, noting its successful track record of conservative budgeting and financial practices. “We are extremely proud that our effective fiscal strategies have placed us among a select group of well-managed districts that have achieved a bond rating of Aa1, “Adcock said. “Monies saved from the lower interest rate will help supplement instructional programs and operations, which ultimately minimizes the tax burden on our residents.”

In 3087, a woman collapsed during a routine child birth; her bones caved in on each other and pierced all of her vital organs, killing her almost instantly. The doctors couldn’t do anything. After a thorough examination of the mother’s body, the scientists saw that her bones did not break, but bent in on themselves under the weight of her skin. The scientist examined the newborn, fearing the same outcome. However, they did not find fragile bone structure like the mother had; they found an exceptionally strong bone structure. The newborn had bone structure strength equal to an average ten year-old boy. That cycle of strong boned child births continued throughout the years.

In the year 4012, a different birth mutation occurred. A mother carried a weak-boned child and, when she was born, doctors decided on a mercy killing, calling it “sparing the loss for the future generations.” Through further investigation, scientists discovered that the father had a 75% weak bone probability and killed him too, again to “spare the loss for the future generations.” The people started calling them “mercy killings for the good of the future.” The last mutation occurred in 4070, when a male and a female produced a child with such strong bone structure that the only appropriate term was titaniumboned. When the mother and father where checked, their genes showed that the mother had all strong bone chromosomes and the father had all strong bone chromosomes, in effect producing

a titanium baby. Titanium babies are extremely rare, so rare that only one in a thousand showed a titaniumboned person. The government was fighting for territory when they heard the news of an improved gene malfunction; they sought them all, literally taking the children out of their mothers’ arms. Subsequently, they trained these children to fight for territory. What the government did not consider was how enraged the public would become at the fact that their children were being taken - and that anger and rage started a civil war. It is now 5028, and the war still continues. I was born in 5009, making me 19 years old. I am one of the few titanium bones left.

New Instructional Tool A new crop of seventhgrade students at Berner Middle School were issued Chromebooks to use as a primary instructional tool during the school year, a move that expands the district’s “Learning…. Anytime, Anywhere” program into grades 7-9. The “Learning…. Anytime, Anywhere” program is a one-to-one initiative, meaning each students is assigned a device that they bring to class, as well as home, with parent approval. The devices are collected in June, but students receive the same device when they return in September. Students with their parents recently attended

an orientation by district officials about the devices’ use and care, then eagerly lined up to receive their new device, which had students beaming with anticipation and their parents cheering in delight. “I’m excited,” said seventh grader Stacy Eager. “I want to learn about its features and see how we use it in our classes.” Classmates Olivia Bartolo and Caitlin Reilly agreed, saying they are going to charge them and try them out tonight. A Chromebook is not a laptop nor a computer. It’s simply a device that runs the Chrome web browser, and is used to easily access the web and all its vast

resources. Work is saved automatically in a secure cloud-based environment managed by the district. Students can collaborate and communicate with each other and get immediate feedback from their teacher, which helps customize learning for each student. Because there are no programs or software slowing it down, Chromebooks start up quickly, which makes for optimal use of time in the classroom. An eight-hour battery life allows for a fullday of use in the classroom. Chromebooks will be issued to all secondary students by September NEW INSTRUCTIONAL TOOL - Berner Middle School seventh graders display the 2016. Chromebooks they received from district officials. Eighth- and ninth-grade students also received them.
