Waterfront Festival Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino today announced plans to host a Waterfront Festival in conjunction with the Town’s 32nd annual Bluefish Tournament on Sunday, September 10th, from 12 noon to 6 p.m. at Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park. The free event, sponsored by Trinity Solar and Connoisseur Media of Long Island, features children’s activities, face painting, learning exhibits on solar energy, environmental protection and sea life, New York State’s largest fish shaped cake and live musical entertainment by Captain Jack (Billy Joel Tribute), Beyond Fab (Beatles Tribute), Whiskey Road (country hits) and Randy Jackson of Zebra (acoustic Zeppelin). Supervisor Saladino stated, “I’m thrilled to bring this free familyfun event to Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Park and invite residents of all ages to come down and enjoy live music, marine and outdoor exhibits, great food, arts and crafts and other family-fun activities.” For the last 10 years, Supervisor Saladino hosted a Marine and Outdoor Recreation Expo as a State Assemblyman. The Expo attracted thousands of visitors and this year, as Supervisor, Joseph Saladino is excited to expand upon earlier efforts

by presenting Waterfront Festival in conjunction with the annual Bluefish Tournament. “The Bluefish Tournament is an allday event and a mustdo for avid fishermen,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “Following the fishing excursion, participants enjoy a tailgate party with hot dogs, beverages, snacks, rafﬂes, awards and prizes, thanks to generous event sponsors.” Registration for the Bluefish Tournament, which is held from 4:30 a.m. to 4 p.m., is currently underway and open to anglers of all ages at $35 for Town residents and $45 for non-residents. Massapequa Park’s Annual Costume Parade will be held on Sunday, October 29th at Brady Park. This wonderful event is co-sponsored by the Knights of Columbus, Lady of the Island Council and the Village. Registration for the parade will begin at 12 noon and the parade and judging will kick off at 1:00 p.m. Costumes will be judged on creativity and originality. Prizes will be awarded in four age groups: (1) under one year old; (2) one to three years old; (3) four to six years old; and (4) seven to nine years old. There will be a Grand Prize for the best overall costume. Hot dogs, soda and candy will be served to all participants. And just like that the summer of 2017 has come to an end. My son is starting his senior year at the University of Wisconsin and my daughter will be a sophomore at Penn State. The weather this summer was spectacular. Unfortunately, it did not start off that way for Memorial Day. The parade was cancelled and a ceremony was held at the American Legion Hall in Massapequa to honor our veterans. I spoke to many of the veterans and they were moved at the number of groups and residents that attended. I said this is the Massapequa’s, I would not have expected anything less. Then we had Irish Night and Breakfast in the Park, both events had spectacular weather and great turnouts. Our fireworks show and July 4th parade were absolutely fantastic. The crowds were huge showing the great patriotism of our Village. This year we decided to make the Street Fair only one day. We used a new organizer, had more activities for the kids and a wonderful car show. This year I got into the dunk tank to raise money for our local senior centers. Yes, I will do it again, if asked. This year our road projects were in full swing. We were able to repave 14 roads in the Village and redesign Parking Field No. 4. This new design will add more spots for our residents and has a safer flow of traffic. Also in the coming months, we will Riprap the shoreline of Colleran Park. This will be a major project that will create a natural barrier to the bay with stone to protect the shoreline from further erosion. We will also bring back the natural beauty of the park with new plantings. As Fall comes upon us Halloween will be coming up fast. In the past few years we have noticed that many trick or treaters have been coming to the Village and it has become a safety concern with all the children and adults crossing the streets. So, this year we will close Park Boulevard between 3pm and 6pm to allow our trick or treaters to come in the Village in a safe manner and allow our merchants to conduct their normal business activities during the day. We are asking all residents to plan their trick or treating during these hours. In September, we will always remember the terrorist attacks on September 11th. It is the 16th anniversary of the 2001 attack on our Country and the 5th anniversary of the terrorist attack on our consulate in Benghazi Libya. We shall never forget all the lives that were lost on those tragic days and first responders we continue to lose every day from 9/11 sicknesses. I would like to remind everyone to shop locally. We have some of the best merchants on Long Island and we need to support them. May God bless you and your families. And may God continue to bless the greatest Village and Country in the world – the United States of America.

TAX EXEMPTIONS FILING DATE: September 1st through December 29th, 2017

VETERANS:

Property must be owned by a Veteran who served on Active duty in the U.S. Armed Services during specific wartimes: World War I, World War II, Korean War, Vietnam and Persian Gulf Conflict.

COLD WAR VETERANS:

Property must be owned by a Veteran who served on active duty in the U.S. Armed Services from September 2, 1945 to December 26, 1991.

SENIOR:

DISABILITY & LIMITED INCOME EXEMPTION:

Requirements are based on a person’s disability, ownership, residency and maximum total income of $37,400 or less for 2017. Please note that if a resident already receives a Senior Exemption, they cannot also receive an exemption under this law. Additionally, 50% of all un-reimbursed medical and prescription drug expenses can also be deducted.

VOLUNTEER FIREFIGHTERS/AMBULANCE WORKERS:

Village Bamboo Law On June 27, 2016 the Village Of Massapequa Park enacted a local law concerning the growth and maintenance of Bamboo. Essentially, the law prohibits growth of current Bamboo plantings within 10 feet of the property line and prohibits any new plantings. Sidewalks Sidewalks and curbs are the responsibility of the homeowner. Sidewalks should be kept in good repair to eliminate any dangerous situations. Village To Protect Shoreline At Colleran Park The Village will undertake a major renovation to the shoreline at Colleran Park located at the intersection of Whitewood and Skylark Drives. The project is aimed to protect the existing shoreline, prevent further erosion and add to the natural beauty of the park. The erosion stabilization project will consist of Riprap stone that will be layered and placed to create a natural looking seawall. The stones are approximately eighteen to thirty inches in diameter and graded along the shoreline to form a layer of protection against wave action. DOGS

Residents are reminded that dogs are not allowed to run loose on any public street, sidewalk or other public place in the Village. Dogs must always be under the immediate and full control of the owner or person in charge and restrained on a leash. Please be mindful of the property of others while walking your dog. The median strip (between the curb and sidewalk) is maintained by the homeowner and should be avoided when walking your dog.

COMMERCIAL VEHICLES

Commercial vehicles more than seven feet six inches in height are restricted from parking on residential property between 7pm and 7am Monday through Friday and all day Saturday and Sunday. Only one commercial vehicle of any height less than seven feet six inches may be parked on residential property at any time.

LEFT TO CURB

Many Village residents and visitors to the Village are parking their cars “Left to Curb” and/or across sidewalks in front of their residences. These are serious violations of the New York State Vehicle and Traffic Code. Pedestrians and school children are forced by drivers who block sidewalks to walk into the street, exposing them to vehicles on the move. Vehicles parked “Left to Curb” hinder the drivers’ ability to see oncoming traffic when they wish to re-enter the traffic lanes.

Getting Involved Although they will only spend one year at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, students can really make it count by challenging themselves academically and taking advantage of a wealth of extracurricular offerings. This year’s incoming ninth-graders were invited to orientation sessions on August 30th and 31st to become acquainted with the building. Principal Jordan McCaw welcomed the high school’s Class of 2021 and asked them to ponder the question, “What makes you a Massapequa Chief?” He encouraged

them to pursue their interests and contribute to the community by getting involved in activities, particularly serviceoriented clubs. Incoming students learned about the events that make the Ames Campus special such as spirit week, career day and the annual art exhibit. They heard from Executive Assistant to the Principal Tania Willman about the bell schedule, buses and lockers, met their new teachers and guidance counselors, and were able to gain insight from a student who attended

Ames last year, Anthony Papasodero. The program concluded with tours of the building. “We welcome the new ninth-graders with open arms and encourage them to take advantage of the many opportunities we offer at Ames,” Mr. McCaw said. “This is their school and we want them to take pride in it and get the most out of their experience. We have created a nurturing and supportive environment where our staff is invested in their success here and throughout their high school years.”

Grant Available The Student Activist Grant of the Ethical Humanist Society of Long Island is available to Nassau County middle school and high school students who want to create a better world. The $500 grant funds a selected student’s project in areas of peace, humanitarian efforts, the environment, disaster relief, or disadvantaged groups. The project can be a fundraiser that connects to an existing organization (such as the Habitat for Humanity) or makes a direct change (such as a neighborhood clean-up or voter registration drive). The grant will give the student seed money to conduct the project. Previous Student

Activist Grants have supported safe recycling of medicine containers for clinics in Malawi, building a greenhouse on a high school campus, spring baskets for children in homeless shelters, educating high school students about underage drinking with stickers on pizza boxes, creating an outdoor play area at a homeless shelter, running a Bowl-a-thon for Habitat for Humanity, and creating and selling ornaments to raise money for a breast cancer program. Says 2015 grant recipient Matthew Berman of Roslyn High School who collected 3500 pill bottles that were sent to Africa, “I am so grateful for this opportunity that

the grant presented me with to turn this plan on paper into a successful and functioning reality.” The student must be a Nassau County resident, aged 12 to 18, and enrolled in middle school or high school. The application deadline is November 30th, 2017, with the project to be completed before April 30th, 2018. Most of us reading this column have memories of Hurricane Sandy, and many people are still rebuilding from it all.

Support Group for Caregivers of People with Breast Cancer Mondays, 6-7:30 p.m. Taking care of person with breast cancer can be stressful. This group is designed to address the needs of care takers. Any person who is experiencing the stress and anxiety of caring for a loved one with breast cancer should attend. Young Women’s Support Group, Under 40 Tuesdays, 6-7:30 p.m. Women under the age of 40 who are diagnosed with breast cancer have unique needs. This support group will focus on hose

concerns while allowing the members to share their feelings in a safe supportive environment. Anyone who wants to connect with and receive support from women under 40 should attend.
