“I hope the students gained a sense of experimentation and independence in their learning,” said Lisa Caputo, the curriculum associate for science. “One of the most important things for students is that they learn by doing.” Ms. Caputo explained that the district has been hosting Camp Invention for at least a decade, and every year the program is different. That’s what keeps students like Gavin Russell, a fifth-grader at McKenna, coming back every year. He said the different activities teach him how to think outside of the box, which helps him in school.

The workshops were led by district teachers with support from high school and middle school students. Camp Director Betty Ann Natke said that the positive rapport that the 120 campers developed with the counselors added to the atmosphere. “I liked working with the children,” said counselor Natasha Saar, a junior at Massapequa High School. “Seeing them having fun, invent and being creative felt great.” Catch Your Dreams The future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams. “Launch” was the theme of this year’s Camp Invention program hosted by the Massapequa School District, which was held from August 14th-18th at McKenna Elementary School. Students entering grades 1-6 explored the world and beyond through a variety of hands-on activities. In Operation Keep Out, children took apart old electronics and used the pieces to create spy gadget alarm boxes. They became entrepreneurs in Duct Tape Billionaire in which they came up with inventions, built prototypes from recycled materials and marketed their products. Mission Space Makers had students explore Earth’s ecosystems and other planets, and Have a Blast featured the testing of air cannons and the launching of water rockets. In Camp Invention games, the youngsters designed contraptions that could protect a water balloon when dropped.

An eclipse, a fox and a whale … what’s next? A zebra? These were the words overheard at Robert Moses Field 5 on the afternoon of Monday, August 21st, spoken by a little boy as he incredulously recounted the events of the day. Nearly 30 years his senior, I have to say I shared the sentiment. What started as a somewhat spontaneous vacation day to spend relaxing on the beach, perhaps catching a glimpse of the highly publicized 70% of a solar eclipse, turned into a relative bucket list of random natural sightings the likes of which couldn’t have been better orchestrated if one tried. After stealing a look at the crescent of golden light as the sky subtlety darkened around us, we decided it was only slightly as impressive as promised. The reactions from those on the surrounding beach blankets ranged from, Oh wow, that was incredible! to Wait, which end is it eclipsing from?

I don’t see anything? Luckily for them, the afternoon promised more stellar sights to behold. As the sun began peeking out once again, a commotion erupted up on the sand behind us, as a small crowd gathered around what at first glance appeared to be a stray dog. Upon further inspection, it proved to be a small furry fox, munching on a bagel, as he calmly eyed the growing swarm of beachgoers. He then trotted down the beach, bouncing from one blanket to the next, pausing under one woman’s umbrella as she sat engrossed in a book. Eventually, someone summoned a lifeguard, who determined that this particular fox was most likely a few years old and, though seemed friendly, was probably best left alone in pursuit of his dinner. As the crowd gradually dispersed, the sound of applause was heard down by the water. We turned to see everyone facing west, lifeguards included,

eyes fixated on something in the ocean. What now, is someone drowning? one lady was heard muttering. Well, I doubt the lifeguards would be standing applauding if that was the case, her husband retorted. As we made our way down to the shoreline, we saw a giant spray of water shoot up from the horizon, followed by a humpback whale flipping through the air and disappearing below the surf. Again, the crowd cheered. And again, the whale leapt into the air, as if taking a bow. I grabbed my phone and attempted to capture the sight, only to find myself filming several minutes of motionless water. But then, at last, he emerged once more. Out for yet another encore. As we headed back to our beach blanket, we passed the little boy as he breathlessly encapsulated the day’s happenings. I have to say, I half expected a zebra to come barreling over the sand dunes. It was that kind of afternoon.

Eco-conscious lifestyles may have transformed the ways people behave at home or on the job, but many schools have taken a little longer to embrace ecofriendly practices. But that doesn’t have to continue, as younger generations of students are growing up green and ready to embrace some green strategies in the classroom. Tips for College Applicants Choosing where to apply to college is a big decision that can affect the lives of young students for years to come. The college application process can have more immediate impacts as well, as U.S. News reported that the average college application fee was $41 in the spring of 2015, meaning families can expect to spend several hundred dollars just to apply to colleges. The rising cost of a college education coupled

with a competitive job market only serve to emphasize the importance high school students and their families must place on deciding where to apply. The following are a handful of strategies families can employ to make students’ decisions regarding where to apply to college a little easier. Don’t hesitate from applying to a dream school. The Princeton Review defines dream schools as those colleges

or universities where a student’s academic credentials fall in the low end or below the school’s averages for students accepted the year prior. But even students who meet the academic requirements established by their dream schools may be hesitant to apply to such schools because of the cost of tuition. Students whose academic records fall just short of their dream schools’ criteria or whose financial means make

attending their dream schools seem impossible should still apply to those schools. Financial aid might be available, and schools might look at more than just academic performance, particularly for students whose grades fall just short of last years’ average accepted applicants. Don’t be deterred by application fees. Stanford University’s application fee for 2017 was $90, making the school one of the

more expensive colleges or universities to apply to. But many schools, including Stanford, waive those fees for certain applicants. Students should not expect each school to waive their application fees, but they also should not let those fees deter them from applying, especially if they meet or exceed the application requirements. Choose the right safety school. Safety schools are those colleges or universities where

applicants’ academic credentials make them a near certainty to gain admission. But when choosing safety schools, students should pick schools that they would enjoy attending. Applying to a school simply because you can get in and not because you want to enroll there can make for an unpleasant college experience should you ultimately end up attending that college.

A Warm Welcome New teachers in the Massapequa School District arrived at their orientation on August 22nd with great enthusiasm and left with more knowledge, new friends and even some goodies. The district welcomed 29 new faculty members, including some who will be teaching in Massapequa for the first time and others who are moving into permanent positions. Several will be assigned to Berner Middle School to support the sixth-grade move. Superintendent Lucille Iconis and her administrative team were joined by Board

of Education President Timothy Taylor in welcoming the group as the two-day program began in McKenna Elementary School’s Teacher Learning Center. Ms. Iconis said that the ongoing theme in the district is “positive mindset,” which she captured by sharing the book, “Mrs. Spitzer’s Garden,” about a teacher who helps children grow and flourish. “It’s always about them,” Ms. Iconis said. “It has to be. That’s why you’re in this profession. You’re here because you care, because you love kids and you want to make a difference. Even though

I’m the superintendent, I’m forever a teacher.” Mr. Taylor said that many educators go on to have careers in Massapequa spanning several decades, and new teacher orientation is where it all begins. He added that they have been chosen for their positions following a rigorous selection process and wished them success in the new school year. Putting on a halftime show at a high school football game requires much planning and coordination, which is why students at Massapequa High School got a head start. Marching band camp was held from August 14th-16th to prepare for the upcoming season. The school’s marching band performs the national anthem before each of the four home games along with a themed halftime show. It also competes in the Newsday Marching Band Festival each October.
