This industry report shows clearly how the traditional ways of selling homes have become increasingly less and less effective in today’s market. The fact of the matter is that fully three quarters of homesellers don’t get what they want for their home and become disillusioned and - worse financially disadvantaged when they put their home on the market.

These voids in the system make a horrifying situation even worse. Angela’s House, founded in 1992, offers hope for families and children living with severe medical conditions. Their home care programs works with over 600 children that live at home with their parents, by coordinating the home care services needed to support these children living at home. Registration materials for this event are available for individuals and teams at www.AngelasHouse.org and on the day of the event. Sponsorship opportunities are also available. I’m baaaaack! The human is busy putting the finishing touches on Seasons™ Magazine this week, so she asked me to fill in yet again. From what I’ve heard, readers absolutely loved my last column and have been writing in regularly to check on my wellbeing. Thanks for the love, and all the “half-birthday” wishes. So how does it feel to celebrate six months in the bowl, you ask? Not too shabby. I received my very first birthday present in the form of a gift card to Pet Smart, and the human says I can pick out anything I want. I’ll have to give it some thought. I hear they
have even bigger plants than the one I currently reside with, or maybe a castle… or a seashell to sleep in… the possibilities are endless. My one gripe is that, after weeks of this birthday talk, there was no cake – not even a cupcake, a cookie, a crumb… nothing. I thought I was finally going to sample a morsel when the human’s “Mommy” came over and tempted me with a Flying Saucer ice cream sandwich. How yummy those chocolate crumbs looked. But, alas, the rogue flake was snatched from my waiting jaws. What a tease. That aside, the day was very enjoyable, with much
singing and celebrating in honor of me and all my finned glory. And well it should have been. I am, after all, the most lively addition to that drab little apartment, if I do say so myself. I even complement the throw pillows and accents. I am, to put it quite simply, the finest accessory in the place. I suppose I should also note that my milestone was shared by the human – something about turning 33 I think. That seems like an awfully big number. Maybe that’s why she’s so tall. Such are some of the thoughts I ponder as I swim my daily 437 laps around the bowl… ‘Til next time, this is Buddy, signing off.

BOCES Programs Completed BOCES Special Education Regents track high school programs, 45 percent plan to attend two-year colleges and another 8 percent of these students plan to attend four-year colleges. A total of 17 students graduated with college credits through a partnership with SUNY Farmingdale. In addition to local community colleges, students also will attend Rochester Institute of Technology, Ohio Technical School, Tallahassee Community College, Culinary Institute Hyde Park and Florida State University, Tampa. Across all programs, a total of 27 percent of students met requirements for the Career Development and Occupational Studies Commencement Credential (CDOS). Thirty-one percent of all students will enter the workforce, either through vocational training programs and/or supported or competitive employment. Of students attending
Nassau BOCES Skills programs, 95 percent met requirements for the Skills Achievement Commencement Credential. Eighty-seven percent of these students will attend day habilitation and/or vocational training programs. “Nassau BOCES provides special needs students with the tools to help them succeed and meet their highest potential,” said Karen Ellis, Special Education Executive Director. Career and Technical Education Nassau BOCES Barry Tech attracts a special breed of high school student. Motivated and goal-oriented, graduates of the school go on to become airline pilots, chefs, mechanics, medical technicians, veterinarians, computer technicians and specialists in more than 40 career fields. More than 650 Nassau County teenagers were awarded certificates of completion from Barry Tech during a recent ceremony at the
Tilles Center at LIU Post. Eighty-three percent of students are collegebound and 15 percent are going directly to work in their Career and Technical Education field. This year, more than 40 students from Barry Tech earned scholarships for academic achievement, competence in their chosen career field and service to their community, receiving over $6,000 in total scholarship funds. The $125 Barry Tech Career and Technical Education Achievement Award was bestowed to 35 students who have performed well in their chosen fields of study, participated in school activities and community service, and have served as positive role models. Long Island High School for the Arts Nassau BOCES’ Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA) provides professional-level training for teenagers interested in pursuing careers in the arts. The
talented members of the LIHSA senior class have more than one cause to celebrate this summer. Not only did they graduate high school, but also many of them will be financing their dreams of attending college with funds earned from scholarships and grants. The 60 graduates received a total of $5.5 million in scholarships and grants. In addition, the graduates have earned admission to some of the most prestigious schools and colleges in the country, including the Boston Conservatory of Music, Syracuse University’s Newhouse School, Indiana University Jacobs’ School of Music, Johns Hopkins University Peabody Conservatory and New York University’s Tisch School of the Arts. “We need a place that keeps artistic kids from dropping out of high school – fortunately that place exists and we are all in it right now – it’s called Long Island High School for the Arts (LIHSA). Where else could
I go to school and get this experience,” said Max Novick, student speaker for his class and a Syosset UFSD graduate who studied film at LIHSA. Alternative Education Programs Nassau BOCES alternative high school programs such as English Literacy Alternative Program (ELAP), Positive Alternative Twilight High School (PATHS), Springboard, Career Academy and Teenage Parenting Program (TAP) offer a second chance to teenagers whose needs cannot be met in a traditional school setting. TAP students have a nursery on-site so they can learn parenting skills as well as spend time with their children while at school. These programs have helped more than 20 students earn local, Regents or high school equivalency diplomas.

It will be held on Saturday, October 17th, from 6:00 p.m. to 11:00 p.m. at the Crest Hollow Country Club. The 2015 Gala Honoree is President of Hunter EMS Ambulance, Inc. Daniel Leibowitz. For the past decade, Mr. Leibowitz has created and nurtured the longstanding
partnership with Good Samaritan Hospital along with Catholic Health Services’(CHS) other five hospitals. Since 1982, Hunter has served CHS and its patients with dignity and respect. Proceeds from the Ball will benefit the Good Samaritan Hospital Foundation. Over the years the Ball has raised nearly $10 million for the hospital. These funds have helped
Good Samaritan continue its mission of delivering the highest quality health care to countless patients and families. This stellar black tie affair includes cocktails, dinner and dancing. Tickets are $300 per person and sponsorship opportunities are available. For additional information, please call 631.376.3333.
Free Adoption Month The Town of Oyster Bay is hosting its annual “Free Adoption Month” through the end of September at the Town Animal Shelter in Syosset. During September, the Town will waive the usual adoption fee of $80 for dogs and $84 for cats. The standard $10 spay /neuter license fee still applies. For seniors, the license fee is $5. Dogs will receive both a rabies and a 5-in-1
shot, while cats will receive a rabies and a 3-in-1 shot at no charge. Both dogs and cats will receive free microchipping. The Town’s Animal Shelter is a sanctuary for many happy and healthy animals in need of a loving home. Anyone looking for a new pet should visit this state-of-the-art shelter and see the wide selection of dogs and cats we have available. The shelter staff
will be happy to assist you to ensure you find an animal appropriate for your family’s lifestyle. The Animal Shelter is open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday. To see photos of some of the animals available for adoption, or to link to the shelter’s Facebook page, visit the Town’s website, www.oysterbaytown.com. Call 516.677.5784 for more information.

Golf Invitational The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence, Inc. (LICADD) held its 35th Annual R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational Monday and brought in more than $200,000 to support its lifesaving substance abuse prevention programs and comprehensive addiction services. More than 100 golfers teed-off at The Creek in Locust Valley where 200 dinner guests gathered in support of LICADD. Key sponsors included: Amy & Jeff Capazzi; William DeLuca; Phoenix Beverage Moritt, Hock & Hamroff, LLP; Robin & Bill Baum; Donna & Michael Brennan; Seafield Center; Retreat Premier Addiction Treatment Centers; STV; Atlas Roll Off; Sprout Health Group; Dr. & Mrs. Mele; Dr. & Mrs. Sheehy; Marn Associates, LLC, Neil Greenbaum & Richard
Chin; Christopher D. Smithers Foundation, Inc.; Moritt Hock & Hamroff; Peconic Care – Addiction Research, Treatment & Recovery; Dawn & Peter Leo; Roanoke Sand & Gravel Corp.; NYCB Foundation; EWG Glass; Caron Treatment Center; Empire National Bank; Healthplex, Teagle Family Foundation; Daniel Gale/ Sotheby’s International Realty; Hirshleifer’s; and Mill-Max Mfg, Corporation. Event emcee and auctioneer Tom Suozzi began the Diamonds in the Rough Reception and Dinner at the Creek with a warm welcome. He spoke of the critical needs of youth and families on Long Island and the services that LICADD offers to address the growing crisis of abuse, addiction and drugrelated fatalities in our communities. LICADD Board Chair Jeffery Capazzi explained
the appeal of the R. Brinkley Smithers Golf Invitational, “it is wonderful to be involved in organizing this event, especially when the need for proven drug and alcohol support is so evident and continues to escalate each year.” “The support of our event chairs, Bill Baum, Michael Brennan and Jeffery Capazzi, and the generosity of our donors and volunteers at this event means so much to us, as the proceeds of the tournament will directly fund programs that provide hope and healing to at-risk individuals and the families that support them,” explained Executive Director Steve Chassman. “It is because of their efforts that LICADD remains the go-to agency in the midst of this public health epidemic and continues to develop effective and innovative programs to combat addiction.”

Summer is winding down and so are the August 29 admission prices at the Long Island Game Farm - Wildlife Park & Children’s Zoo’s Back to School Blast. General admission for the park, located at 489 Chapman Blvd. in Manorville, New York, is being reduced to $5 (plus tax) for adults and children. During the event, the Game Farm is offering free face painting and back-to-school giveaways, including notebooks from Staples for the first 100 guests. Our friends at Tanger Outlets in Riverhead are also providing a chance at a $100 shopping spree and coupon books for all attendees. With the mall just over 10 minutes away, it’s a great excuse to stop by both locations during your trip! “Back-to-school shopping can be a stressful and expensive time for families,” says Melinda Novak, CoOwner/Vice President,
Long Island Game Farm. “The Long Island Game Farm is proud to offer an inexpensive day of fun that will provide a break from that stress. We’re excited to partner with Tanger Outlets and Staples to alleviate some of that financial burden associated with back-toschool shopping.” The Long Island Game Farm features interactive animal experiences, where guests can get up-close and personal with their favorite animals. New to the Game Farm this year is the Camel Encounter, where guests can handfeed the camels and learn fun facts from the staff. In addition to camels, guests can hand-feed the LIGF’s resident giraffe, and bottle-feed goats and other baby animals in the nursery. For more information the Long Island Game Farm, please call 631.878.6644 or visit www. longislandgamefarm. com.

Learning and skill-building were hot this summer as thousands of students explored their talents through Massapequa School District’s expansive summer camp program. From learning an instrument to building robots to developing stronger athletic skills, a camp program was offered to meet every child’s interests. “Our summer programs are a convenient and costeffective way for our students to develop their talents and broaden their interests,” said Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis. “We partner with Nassau BOCES, which helps reduce costs associated with planning and implementing the programs.” Students in the Fine Arts Summer Program created movies complete with sound effects and music in iPad Clamation/Stop-Animation Camp. They also honed traditional art skills in classes such as watercolor techniques, drawing and painting, and 3-dimentional design. Student musicians sharpened their skills in band and orchestra, acoustic guitar and musical theater camps. Special pricing this year enabled campers to participate in multiple sessions at discounted prices, which resulted in a nearly 20 percent increase in participation. “We had a very successful season; the beginner band and orchestra classes, as well as the musical theatre program were very popular and saw significant growth,” said Jessica Wyman, band director and coordinator of the
Fine Arts program. About 1,200 campers in the five-week Summer Recreation program enjoyed a variety of fun-filled activities, games and trips; while sports camps, ranging from baseball to wrestling, brought nearly 2,200 athletes in grades one through twelve to the playing field. Campers also gave their brains a workout at a one-
week LEGO Robotics Camp for seventh through ninth graders at Berner Middle School. Campers designed, built and programed LEGO robots and participated in a mock FIRST LEGO League competition. At the elementary level, campers put their ideas to work in Camp Invention Illuminate. The program,
23
Summer Program Fun hosted in conjunction with the National Inventors Hall of Fame, challenges campers to solve real-world problems by exploring connections to science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM). This year, in five different STEM activities, campers designed and built racing carts, explored what it’s like to be an entrepreneur by developing a prototype of a product from scratch, created physical video game models in 3D using broken and unused appliances, constructed super structures and space rockets through challenges by National Inventors Hall of Fame inductees, and developed games using 21st century skills, such as critical thinking, creative problem solving and collaboration. Campers also welcomed award-winning inventor Dr. Kasia Sawaicka, creator of the Immuno-Matrix Skin Patch vaccine and a 2014 Collegiate Inventors Competition Winner. Dr. Sawaicka intrigued her young audience as she spoke about how she developed her invention and how it could change the way vaccines are administered in the future. Through the district’s partnership with BOCES, summer academic programs were delivered at the high school level. Competency and Regents review classes in subjects across the curricula were offered at Berner Middle School.

Educator of Excellence
Fairfield Elementary School teacher Glenna Raskin was named an Educator of Excellence by the New York State English Council in recognition of her outstanding skills as a sixth-grade English language arts teacher.
Raskin will accept the award on October 16th at the Council’s annual conference in Albany, N.Y. “I am truly honored to be a recipient of such a prestigious award,” Raskin said. “I have had the pleasure of working with
so many distinguished and talented educators, so it is a great honor…It acknowledges the effort that I have put into my career as a teacher, and it reflects my dedication and the impact I have had on my students.’ A 28-year veteran in the field, Raskin came to Fairfield Elementary School 18 years ago after teaching for 10 years in New Jersey where she originates. She has taught fifth and sixth graders at Fairfield and currently teaches English language arts to sixth graders, specifically reading. The secret to her success: “I am passionate about my work and about my students. I believe that when children know you really care about them, they want to succeed,” she said. Former student Jake Rosenblum, who is now a
senior, said he remembers her effective Word of the Day exercises and attributes his perfect score on the vocabulary section of the SATs to her teaching style. What’s more, he said, “Recently I was featured in Newsday for starting my own charity and a couple of days later I received a letter from Mrs. Raskin congratulating me on my accomplishment…”That’s the kind of person she is. Once you are her student, you are part of her family for life.” Her passion is also evident to her colleagues who describe her as a “champion” a “trailblazer” and a “lifelong learner who instills the same love of learning in her students.” “Mrs. Raskin’s students can often be found gathered at the carpet listening to her read and model good reading strategies,”
said Fairfield Elementary School Principal Lori Dano. “She keeps them in close proximity, which creates a sense of comfort one should feel when reading, and reads with passion and works to pull students into a story.” “She works with students to find understanding in even the most difficult texts,” she added. “Her ultimate goal is to build literacy skills and build a love of literature to create learners and lifelong readers.” One of Raskin’s most memorable teaching experiences was having the opportunity to take part in Harvard University’s Project Zero Classroom program, which provides educators with ways to create innovative learning environments that promote deep learning and understanding. She
says the program had a transformational impact on her teaching style by allowing her to foster deeper thinking skills in her students. Raskin earned both a bachelor’s and master’s degree from C.W. Post. She is active in the Gift of Life organization, which finds bone marrow transplants for those in need. She became active in the organization after her husband was diagnosed with Myelodysplastic Syndrome, a type of blood cancer. Although her husband’s life could not be saved, she and her family were able to find 18 matches for other patients. Raskin has two sons, Jared and Josh, and daughterin-law, Sara, who is also a teacher.

What is it I mostly want to convey Is it to be long or short Should it be serious or light muse’s play For sure it needs to please the readers’ court. Yes I like to philosophize Make words rhyme like a soft melody Tease the taste buds with mental spice By close listening judge the degree. I try to recall what I would like to hold on to From a poem I recently read What is impressive and strikes me as new Worth that my soul involved should get.

The answer seems very hard to find How come some of the old poems are still taught in school Will this lament help the brain to unwind There seems to be no golden rule. Consequently by my gut feeling I will go Hoping that what teases me, might please you too We should pass on whatever we know Let’s hope each of us stirs up an amazing brew.

LI2DAY WALK - Oyster Bay Town Clerk James Altadonna Jr. recently attended the Long Island 2 Day 5K Walk to Fight Breast Cancer (LI2DAY) held at the Hemlock Street entrance adjacent to the Westfield Sunrise Mall in Massapequa. In the eleven years since the first LI2DAY Walk, the organization has raised over $ 11 million to fight breast cancer. Additionally, LI2DAY has awarded $150,000 in scholarships to 60 students, a yearly breast cancer research grant to Cold Spring Harbor Laboratory and funded programs that have assisted over 145,000 Long Islanders.
MUSIC UNDER THE STARS - A “Music Under the Stars” concert performance featuring vocalists Andy Cooney and Marissa Famiglietti was recently held at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. Supervisor Venditto and the members of the Oyster Bay Town Board were joined by Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy, District Court Judge Paul Meli, New York Assemblyman Joseph Saladino and Senator Michael Venditto in presenting a citation commending event sponsor Pamela Leigh Radin of Allstate Insurance for helping to make this summer concert a reality.

The all new 18th Annual Craft and Fine Art Festival will be held Saturday and Sunday, September 26th and 27th, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Saturday, and 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. on Sunday at the Nassau County Museum of Art in Roslyn Harbor. Participants from 26 states and every region of the continental United States were selected from 644 applicants by a jury of professional craft and art experts. In addition, a selection of moderately priced and delicious food and desserts including French sweet and savory crepes, smoothies and more. Continuous craft demonstrations will also be available. Dramatic metal and stone sculpture, designer apparel in silk, cashmere, organic cotton, alpaca and other natural fibers, diamonds, rubies and sapphires set in gold and platinum, fine paintings
on canvas, home furnishings sculpture, original fashions in dyed leather, blown and stained glass, as well as hand crafted creations fashioned from exotic, non-endangered woods, will all be presented personally by 90 American master craftsmen and fine artists under large tents. Ten thousand visitors are expected to see a display representative of America’s most interesting craft masters and fine artists offered at one of Long Island’s most exceptional American crafts exposition on the grounds of Long Island’s premier art museum. Produced by the American Concern for Art and Craftsmanship, the same organization that produces the Crafts Festival at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. A modest admission fee will benefit the Nassau County Museum of Art.
Admission is $9; children under 12 admitted FREEl $1 discount for seniors on Saturday. There will be ample free parking available. Of the 90 crafts displays from every region of the United States, all will be presented by the master craft artist-designers and artists themselves and will combine the unusual with the traditional hand crafted works and fine art which will be in abundance at the 18th Annual Craft and Fine Art Festival at the Nassau County Museum of Art. Thousands of uniquely designed original works will be on display. One of the most novel creations will be presented by Joan Michlin of Sarasota, Florida who will display a hand fabricated one-of-a-kind sterling silver triangular container decorated with handcarved Lapis Lazuli and with a 14karat gold
bracelet embellished with diamonds, as well as a 14 karat gold and diamond stick pin enhancing the exterior, yet removable for use as body adornments is priced at $11,500. However, most items range in price from $50 for a multi-colored enameled ladybug on a lily pin combining forms and vibrant color to express a unique charm and humor available from Cynthia Chuang of Locust Valley, New York to $450 for a full sized functional guitar fabricated and decorated with multicolored fused and coldworked glass combined with metal plasma that is cut and welded by Maria Livrone and Bill Zack from Plains, Pennsylvania. A selection of art and craft demonstrations and a Children’s Play Area can be enjoyed at this family friendly event. The Festival’s food and dessert concessions
29
Craft & Fine Art Festival are healthful, delicious and family oriented and will feature moderately priced wholesome fare, including a full line of savory and sweet crepes, fresh fruit shakes, natural lemonade and salads. The purpose is to provide the Nassau County Museum of Art with additional community support and visibility so as to enhance their mission and bring to Nassau County the finest crafts event available, with many of the best craft-artists from the Crafts Festivals at Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts culled from every region of the United States. It was conceived as an opportunity to provide a support mechanism enabling master craft artists to continue their work, providing themselves with a dignified living, while offering the community an unparalleled cultural
event. The American Concern for Art and Craftsmanship, producers of the Craft and Fine Art Festival at the Nassau County Museum of Art, the American Crafts Festival and the Autumn Crafts Festival, both at Lincoln Center, is a nonprofit arts organization which offers educational and essential services to American craft artists and is sponsored by the New York Foundation for the Arts.
