I have always been a big believer in the concept of birthdays as beginnings, sort of personal new years, if you will, for each individual person. As such, my expectations of such days tend to aim for a level of unreasonable perfection, whether celebrating my own or that of a loved one; feeling that, somehow, this one day represents an omen of things to come over the next 364. This year, I decided to begin my day by driving to my favorite local sunrise spot, in the hope of catching one of those breathtakingly spectacular views first thing in the morning. All week, the weather looked to be beautiful, clear skies and sunshine all the way. Though it seemed exceptionally gray and gloomy as I headed south, I hoped the clouds would soon be accented by shooting rays of gold and pink.

Over 30 minutes later, as I aimlessly wandered the docks, attempting to capture “artsy” photographs of the still-muted surroundings, I wondered if this particular outing had been a colossal waste of time. Here I was, sleepily counting down to 6:03 a.m., when I could just as well have stayed under the covers at home. New beginnings, indeed. And then, just as I was about to cut my losses and head back to my pillow and blanket for the remainder of the morning, I heard a young boy who had been fishing at the other end of the dock with his father exclaim, “Dad, look at the sun! How cool is that?” Shifting my gaze over the horizon, I was shocked to see a huge red ball emerging out of the haze, nearly 10 minutes past “official” sunrise time. As I attempted to capture

the sight before me, I realized that pictures would never do it justice; and so, for once, I simply watched as the red turned to gold and the sun blanketed the bay with its shimmering rays. Too often do we become caught up in documenting a particular event, rarely allowing ourselves the time to take it all in, to truly become immersed in the experience. While one single day may not an entire year dictate, it can certainly set the tone in a symbolic manner; and on this, my 35th birthday, I was heartened to witness the gloom lift to reveal stunning beauty underneath. Patience is a virtue, as is appreciating the small moments, in the hope that they will lead to many more down the road. Here’s to day one being one small step in that direction.

The Town of Oyster Bay GAP program’s annual Talent Show was recently held at Syosset-Woodbury Community Park. Congratulations to all the children for putting on a wonderful show and thanked the staff for their

efforts toward making this program a continued success. The GAP program is administered by the Handicapped Services Division of the Town of Oyster Bay’s Department of Community and Youth Services.

Lifeline Screening

Building and Battling The Massapequa School District not only offers a robust robotics program during the school year, but it also gives students the opportunity to explore the moving machines during the summer. A four-day robotics camp was recently held at Massapequa High School for students entering fourth through eighth grades. More than 30 youngsters took part in the program, a higher turnout that reflected growing demand. Technology education teachers Brian Vanek and Matthew Swanson led the camp with support from high school robotics students. “It’s an opportunity for the students to experiment, play, learn and have fun,” Mr. Vanek said about the camp in which participants

build their creations from Lego robotics kits. During the first two days of the camp, students learned the basics of programming before working in pairs to design and build their robots. They then tested their creations in “Battle Bots” competitions. Mr. Vanek explained that throughout the process students developed problem-solving and critical thinking skills while exploring their creativity. “I like Legos a lot and I am into building and creating things,” said seventh-grader Jessica Fackler who participated in the camp for the first time and had her first experience with robotics. Eighth-grader Justin Schweickert said he learned skills that will

help him in the future. He enjoyed the chance to be creative and collaborate with others. “I like the programming aspect the most,” he said. “You get to test different ideas and if it doesn’t work out, you get to try again.” With increasing job opportunities in robotics, the district continues to expand its offerings. Students begin their exploration of machines and programming in the elementary school Makerspace centers. Robotics is part of the seventh- and eighth-grade technology education curriculum and there is a dedicated course at the high school. There are also robotics clubs at the high school and middle school.

TECHNIQUE WITH A TWIST - Inspired by the abstract expressionism artwork of Jackson Pollock, students in the Massapequa School District’s Summer Fine Arts program created splatter paint designs on old sneakers. Administrative Changes Several administrators and teachers in the Massapequa School District will serve in new roles for the 2017-2018 school year following appointments announced at the August 3rd board of education meeting. Dr. Thomas Fasano, previously the assistant to the superintendent for curriculum and instruction, has been named assistant superintendent for curriculum and instruction. He is beginning his 10th year in the district and is also a professor in the educational administration program at St. John’s University. Robert Schilling becomes the assistant to

the superintendent for human resources and general administration after previously overseeing the areas of assessment, student data and technology services. He will now focus on personnel, including the hiring of teachers and staff, in a district that employs approximately 1,100 people. Mr. Schilling has been an administrator in the district for 18 years. Bryan Piotrowski, the assistant principal at East Lake Elementary School for the past three years, will now serve as the executive director for technology and general administration. He will support teachers and administrators on the integration of instructional

technology into the schools, and supervise the district’s technology learning coaches, computer monitors and computer teaching assistants. Mr. Schilling and Mr. Piotrowski are both graduates of the Massapequa School District. Lisa Silveri, a world language teacher in the district for more than 10 years, takes on the role of administrative associate for general administration. Her responsibilities will include implementation of federal grants, serving as a liaison to outside organizations, working on board and district policy, and special projects.

Remembrance Ceremony Set With the 16th Anniversary of the September 11th, 2001 terrorist attacks on America approaching, new Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino announced today that the Town will honor the memory of all those who lost their lives that day by hosting a 9/11 Remembrance Ceremony on Wednesday, September 6th, beginning at 7 p.m. at TOBAY Beach. Supervisor Saladino invites all residents, families and friends to attend.

“As we prepare to observe a national day of remembrance on September 11th, it is important that we commemorate this day, as the passage of time does not diminish the tragedy that our nation suffered 16 years ago,” Supervisor Saladino stated. “Together, we will pay tribute to those we lost that tragic morning and honor the bravery and heroism demonstrated by first responders.” The Town’s 9/11 Memorial is inscribed with the names of Town of

Oyster Bay residents lost on September 11st, 2001. The Memorial features a steel beam recovered from the World Trade Center. The September 6th ceremony includes a candlelight vigil, vocal performances, bagpipe music and religious readings. In addition, the names of those lost, who are inscribed on the wall, will be read. MAKING HISTORY - Massapequa International Little League 10U Girls Softball made history last month by winning both District and Sectional Titles in the Williamsport Tournament. They advanced into a coveted spot playing for the States Title in Dunkirk, NY. The 10U team made it into the semi-finals but did not advance. This put Massapequa Softball on the map! New Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson honored a group of local caring mothers known as Team YOLO prior to the August 12th Music Under the Stars performance of Jimmy Buffett tribute band “Barometer Soup” at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa. Team YOLO, an acronym for “You Only Live Once,” has competed

annually in an obstacle course running event to raise money and awareness for the Morgan Center, a preschool for children with cancer located in the Town of Oyster Bay. Since it was formed four years ago by Dannie Taylor, a mom from Oyster Bay, Team YOLO has raised in excess of $85,000 for the Morgan Center. “Whenever a local group gets together

coordinate Team YOLO’s special recognition program. “I was so inspired to see this regular group of local moms who banded together to achieve something extraordinary,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “This sort of spirit and energy is the very fabric of a vibrant community and I want to let this group know they are considered by many to be this Town’s quintessential role models.” Councilwoman Johnson said the Town of Oyster Bay has an extremely close bond with the Morgan Center because they are based locally out of the Town’s Hicksville Athletic Center. “The Morgan Center operates in our facility and provides preschool age children battling cancer the opportunity to learn and socialize in a safe environment,” Councilwoman Johnson

said. “Children undergoing chemotherapy treatment have a suppressed immune system and the Morgan Center allows these children to interact in a setting where all of the parents understand the inherent risks and the importance of a germ free environment and limiting exposures. It is hard not be touched by the uplifting work being done there.” The Morgan Center is provided free of charge to the children and their families. Tuition and expenses are completely supported by private donations and fundraising. “That is why the generosity and kindness of people like Team YOLO should be celebrated,” Supervisor Saladino said. According to Edutopia, a K-12 learning and education resource, the average school uses approximately 250,000 pieces of paper per school year. This estimate is based on an average of 50 reams of paper per teacher at a 100-teacher school.

Museum Director Named

Angela Susan Anton, president of the board of trustees of Nassau County Museum of Art, announced that Charles A. Riley II, Ph.D. has been named director of the Museum. Dr. Riley’s long association with Nassau County Museum of Art includes having served as curator-at-large and popular presenter of many lectures offered for many exhibitions. He helped curate the Museum’s Picasso, Surrealism and Abstract Expressionist exhibitions and recently curated the permanent installation of Western art at a major new private museum in Taiwan as well as several exhibitions in Berlin, Amsterdam, Lausanne, Manhattan and Long Island’s East End. Dr. Riley is a prolific arts journalist, reviewer and essayist and a celebrated public speaker. His 32 books on art, business and public policy include the recently published Free as Gods: How the Jazz Age Reinvented Modernism, The Jazz Age in France, The Art of Peter Max, Art

at Lincoln Center, The Arts and the World Economy, Color Codes, and The Saints of Modern Art. Dr. Riley’s next book, a study of Rodin in Chinese and English, will be published by the Chimei Museum in fall 2017. Among his many connections with exhibitions at Nassau County Museum, Dr. Riley is the author of monographs, most of them published by Abrams, on Ben Schonzeit, Fritz Bultman and Peter Max. A former Time Inc. reporter who covered the art market as well as Washington for Fortune, Dr. Riley’s articles have appeared in many major art publications including Art & Auction, Art & Antiques and Antiques and Fine Art. He was the editor-in-chief of WE magazine, a bimonthly devoted to people with disabilities. In connection with his work for WE, Dr. Riley won important awards from the Mayor’s Office of the City of New York, Easter Seals, United Cerebral Palsy, the National Recovery Alliance among

other organizations. Sought after as a guest commentator on the art market as well as other topics, Dr. Riley has appeared on CNN, NBC, MSNBC, CBS, ABC and Fox News. He began his publishing career at Doubleday, where he edited several books with Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis. He was a tenured professor at the City University of New York (CUNY), has been a visiting professor in Shijiazhuang (mainland China) and teaches in Clarkson University’s management program. Born and raised in Manhasset, Dr. Riley is a summa cum laude graduate of Princeton University and received his Ph.D. from The Graduate Center of CCNY.
