To all those fellow concertgoers, I have a question: why are you attending these shows? Because, by all indications, it is not to sit back and actually listen to the music being played before you. At first, I thought it may have been an isolated case; but the last several performances I have attended have only served to solidify my perception that no one is paying attention. Mind you, I’m not referring to the popular free summer concert series that pop up all over the area, the ones that encourage you to bring your own seating and refreshments and enjoy a picnic-like atmosphere with your family and friends. I’m talking about

the amphitheater-style shows that you most likely paid pretty good money to see. First off, I understand that the scheduled opening acts may not be the main attraction, but still – it would be nice to throw a little support behind today’s up-and-coming artists. Who knows what they may go on to achieve in a few years. Secondly, once the headliner hits the stage, why would you feel the need to spend the better part of their performance taking selfies, scrolling through Instagram, Snapchat, Facebook… oh, and let’s not forget the art of chasing Pokémon. You are here. You don’t need to inform every single one of your friends of that fact. Just sit back and enjoy it. Appreciate the talent before you. Sure,

you may want to snap a photo or two, maybe record a short video of your favorite number; but, beyond that, I don’t understand the need to be preoccupied by everything other than that entertainment which you paid to see. Whatever happened to the days of lighters in the air and hands clapping along, of singing the chorus in unison with 15,000 of your closest friends and being present in the moment? I’m pretty sure that, even with all of today’s technological advances, the basic concept of appreciating your surroundings has not gone out of style. Perhaps we should all make an effort to get back in touch with this principle. I’ll let you know how tonight’s concert goes. Via Facebook, of course ;)

then completed artwork inspired by each artist using varying techniques and materials. Projects included a collage, tote bag and treasure box. Veltre said the goal was to get the children interested in different periods of art in the 19th and 20th centuries. The final week of arts camp also featured a watercolor class, which was held for the second year. Birch Lane art teacher Melinda Wolfe taught the course and showed students various watercolor techniques. They then created their own pieces such as still-life and landscape paintings. “These kids are showing that they really love to do art,” Wolfe said. “You can see that in their work.” At the end of the week, families were invited to

come in and view the artwork completed in both classes, and then the students were able to take their completed pieces home. The five-week Summer Fine Arts Camp featured

Matthew, who is studying Medical Assisting at Nassau BOCES Barry Tech, earned the 2016 Vanguard Award for seeking academic and career paths that defy conventional gender roles. The award recognizes exceptional students enrolled in CTE programs that prepare them for

nontraditional careers. The Vanguard Award was created by the Nontraditional Employment and Training (NET) Project, which provides statewide assistance to CTE institutions that offer nontraditional programs. NET is funded through the New York State Education Department and is committed to preparing students for the workforce through the promotion of gender-neutral educational

strategies and practices. “These students are the future of the American workforce,” said Barry Tech Principal Laurie Harris. “At Barry Tech, it is our goal to teach our students the skills they need for employment and to give them direction for college. Jennifer Lander, Town of Oyster Bay Lifeguards at Philip B. Healy Beach in Massapequa who all worked together to make a daring rescue of a woman who fell out of her small boat and into a busy boating channel on July 2nd. Thanks to the fast action of this lifeguard team, this potentially life threating event ended on a positive note. The quick and skillful actions of the Lifeguard crew were praised by

those who witnessed the event. All agreed that these exceptional individuals acted heroically, rendered potentially lifesaving aid and deserved special commendation.
