We all have a path, a journey we take through life. Some are relatively direct, with few bumps and curves along the way; others prove far more winding and full of detours. In the end, though, I believe we all reach the destination we are meant to. Eventually. Last week, I touched on some of the ways I go about my craft, and how my writing has evolved through the years. In speaking to the next generation of potential journalists, the best experience I can draw upon is my own. There was a time when I was in their shoes, sitting in high school classrooms and then college lecture halls, wondering where exactly this path I had chosen would lead. It was during those formative years that I looked to my own sources of inspiration in the writing field for guidance, absorbing their styles and studying their techniques for

not entirely. But these were the people, and the positions, I admired from afar and wished to emulate. Maybe it was the sense of prestige I found attractive, the celebrity aspect. Fast forward into the real world of adulthood, and it wasn’t long before I discovered that, if you truly have a love for writing - or any particular skill - it truly doesn’t matter where you do it, what the topics entail or how much notoriety you gain in the process. The fact is, you can make a significant difference on any level, even within the confines of the local community you grew up in, surrounded by the family, friends and local followers you may be fortunate to gain along the way. And that is exactly what has happened, from this desk in Farmingdale, as I put fingertips to keyboard each week, drawing from my own life experiences and those who have inspired me. The path may not always be clear, but the passion has never wavered. That, above all else, is what makes the journey worthwhile.

Just today, in fact, I found myself perusing the archives of past “In Step” columns, searching for a tribute I had written following the passing of Ed Lowe, master storyteller, and one mentor I had the extreme good fortune to work with during my time here at South Bay. Seldom do we have the opportunity to meet our idols, let alone share in our mutual love of a particular craft. No matter the difference in age, or how vast the generational gap, there is simply no substitute for the wisdom of someone who has experienced those things you only dare to dream. If you had asked me back in my formative years where I saw myself in ten, fifteen years time, I probably would have shrugged and said, “Hopefully reporting from the clubhouse of the New York Yankees” or “traveling across the country ala Almost Famous, searching for the next big story to be featured in Rolling Stone Magazine.” Realistic? Perhaps

Athletic facilities in the Massapequa School District are busy this summer, as hundreds of children are participating in the popular sports camp program. The camps began the last week of June and run through early August, with offerings in more than a dozen sports. Camps are led by district coaches with support from current and former Massapequa High School athletes. Many children play their respective sport in a community league and are looking to improve their skills as they get ready to try out for middle school or high school teams. Others are learning a sport for the first time, and the coaches cater instruction to meet the skill level of each participant. At the field hockey camp at Berner Middle School, varsity coach Melodee Ahrens said that the first few days focused on the rules of the game and teaching the girls the various positions. Camp ended with scrimmage games so the

Athletes Develop Skills Continued From 6 young athletes could put their new skills into practice. A track and field camp at Massapequa High School included instruction in all of the events that junior varsity and varsity athletes can choose, including javelin, high jump and relay races. Boys track coach Rich Degnan said the student instructors are very skilled and have achieved All-State rankings or higher. Erin Townsend, who is entering fifth grade at

Lockhart Elementary School, runs track with a local league. She said her favorite event to learn at the camp was the long jump because it incorporates both running and jumping. “I wanted to practice this summer and I want to get better because I plan to do this for a while,” she said. “I want to run track in middle school and high school. The counselors go over everything you would need to know for a track meet.” Incoming senior Lauren Utz was one of the counselors

The varsity athlete passed along her knowledge to the next generation of high school players. “The coaches have taught me so much,” Lauren said. “I want to teach the children what I’ve learned as a way of giving back to the community.” Added assistant varsity coach Christina Castellani, “It was nice to see the progression the children had in just five days of camp,” she said. “They learned

something new every day.” Michael LaBella and Phil Soman hosted a wrestling camp at the high school, with support from varsity wrestlers. Children learned the fundamental of the sport along with different wrestling techniques. “They love to learn and they have a great time,” said junior Frankie Kempton, who has wrestled on the varsity squad for two years. “I WRESTLING MOVES - Fourth-graders Kyle White, love seeing the kids energized left, and Benjamin Baron practiced moves in the high and happy.”

the original part of the building, which dates to 1952. The tiles and wooden subfloors were ripped up in the U-shaped section, which has a crawl space below for air ducts. Additional joists and side supports were added, which are being covered by two layers of plywood. New floor tiles will then be installed throughout that section as well as the addition from the mid-1950s, which is on a concrete slab. The south parking lot is being expanded to accommodate approximately 30 more cars. Sidewalks are being replaced leading to the main entrance, and the wood work on the outside of the building is receiving a fresh coat of paint this summer. New windows are being installed at Fairfield Elementary School. Director of Facilities Timothy O’Donnell said every window will be replaced, including in classrooms, offices and large spaces. Deputy Superintendent Alan Adcock added that because the old windows were several decades old, this project will improve energy efficiency in the building and lower heating costs. The new windows preserve the aesthetics of the school, which dates back to 1925. The library media centers are being renovated at both Massapequa High School and Berner Middle School. The rooms have been gutted and will include new floors, furniture and casework. At Berner, the circulation desk is being moved to the back of the room adjacent to the library media specialist office. The high school library will include new rooms created by glass partitions for classes to meet. Both libraries will include state-of-the-art

Scanlon’s Traveling Salon is run by Eileen Scanlon, a fellow New Yorker whose mission is to cultivate a community based on kindness, respect and equality. Eileen has been a NYS Licensed Cosmetologist for 30 years and has worked with corporate America, non-profits, academia and local grassroots organizations. In 2010, Eileen began volunteering a considerable amount, offering free haircuts to people in need. Eileen felt so overjoyed by helping those in need look and feel beautiful for free while working within various types of socio economic communities that she eventually began her very own traveling salon. With its catchy slogan, Where Style Comes To You, Scanlon’s Traveling Salon now serves an abundance of people across Long Island. As a licensed hair professional, Eileen has a following of paying customers, but her real passion lies with helping those who are not able to afford a haircut or hair process. Sometimes, something as simple as gaining a new look can help a person feel better about him or herself and gain confidence again. Eileen generously and freely gives people that opportunity. Some of the communities that Eileen serves are: the home confined and vulnerable, hospice, group homes, sober houses, assisted living communities and those who are differently abled.
