SALUTE TO AMERICA - The Salute to America concert performance by Dean Karahalis and the Concert Pops Orchestra was recently held at John J. Burns Park in Massapequa as part of the Town of Oyster Bay’s “Music Under the Stars” summer program. Military veterans were recognized by the local legislators on this occasion, and Supervisor John Venditto presented a citation to event sponsor Michael Segreti of Astoria Bank for helping to make the “Salute to America” concert possible.
SCHOLARSHIP TOURNAMENT - The 1st Annual Det. Brian Moore Memorial Scholarship Tournament was recently held. The tournament, in which 40 teams from various towns participated, was organized by the Plainedge Youth Baseball League in conjunction with the NYPD 105th Precinct, NYPD PBD, NYPD LBA and the Brian Moore Family.

Shoes For All, the not for profit agency that collects new and gently worn shoes for those in need in our community recently donated 300 pairs of shoes to veterans at the Veterans Stand Down event at the American Legion Post 390, 160 Marvin Avenue in Hempstead. The event allowed veterans and their famlies to pick out 300 pairs of shoes to help them in their time of need. “We were grateful to be able to help out these veterans who gave of themselves for our freedom...” Said Dr. Mary Carlson DPM, founder of Shoes For All. “...it is a great opportunity to give something they need back to them.” The shoes were collected at recent

Town of Oyster Bay residents are invited to “Learn to Skate” this fall by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park. The ice skating center offers skating classes for residents interested in learning to skate or in sharpening their abilities all throughout the year. Registration for Series 1 (which runs September 8th through October 31st) will begin on August 10th. Those interested can register at the facility, online (www.TheRinx. com) or by phone at 516.797.4126. The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from pre-school and basic skills through advanced
levels. The program is seven weeks and all classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. The “Learn to Skate” schedule is: Mondays, Wednesdays & Fridays from 4:00 p.m. to 6:00 p.m., Tuesdays & Thursdays 10:00 a.m. to Noon, Saturdays from 11:50 a.m. to 12:50 p.m. and Sundays from 12:15 p.m. to 12:45 p.m. Registration costs include admission into the session for which you are registered on the day of the lesson, membership in the United States Figure Skating (USFS) Basic Skills Program, USFS record book for new members, and stickers and USFS Badges upon mastering of each level. There will also be an evaluation on week seven with a recommendation for the next series. There

Basketball is here Tennis is here Soccer is here too traveled to Austin, TX, to compete in the USA Taekwondo National Championships. These dedicated students have trained relentlessly with their Masters to prepare for the National competitions, and were rewarded for their efforts with 21 gold medals, 21 silver medals, and 29 bronze medals. They would like to specifically recognize the outstanding accomplishments of eight students. One athlete won his division and was
named AAU National Team Member. Six athletes qualified to compete in the National Team Trials in the Cadet and Junior divisions in August based on their exceptional performance. And finally, one local athlete will be competing in the USA Taekwondo Senior Team Trials, with the hopes of eventually making the USA Olympic Team. They are proving Themselves to be one of the top teams, not only in the New York area, but in the United States.
