And with that, is there ever really complete precision? Once the text is shared with the masses, the words take on a life of their own, open to new interpretations by an endless array of readers. Such is the beauty of the art. Inspiration is everywhere, if you choose to be open to it. On Tuesday, July 11th, music lovers gathered at the Jones Beach Bandshell for a performance by The Brothers Band an Allman Brothers tribute band comprised of students from Rock-n-Roll U (RNRU). The band, comprised of a mix of typical children, and individuals with special needs aged 13-18, performed a full set of Allman Brothers classics, in addition to showing off some of their musical freestyle compositions. This performance was the first of three concerts that RNRU students will be performing at the Jones Beach Bandshell.

“I couldn’t be prouder of the boys in The Brothers Band,” said Jessica Gallone, owner of RNRU. “They’ve put in many rehearsal hours in preparation for this performance. These boys have been students of RNRU since they were as young as seven years old! They have grown as musicians, entertainers and now young men. They really showed everyone what they could do tonight. Knowing that they love what they do up there, makes us feel that we are doing the right thing at RNRU,” she continued. RNRU is a music school that teaches children and

adults of all abilities. It supports inclusionary participation within their performance groups. Children and people of all abilities perform together on the same stage; with each child performing in one, or more, bands. RNRU supports a positive social atmosphere for children, and their families. Relay for Life

Dozens of communities and seven college and private schools held Relay for Life events across Long Island that were a huge success due to the volunteerism, generous supporters in the community and sponsors according to the American Cancer Society. Throughout the spring and concluding on June 17th, locals celebrated cancer patients in treatment and beyond; remembered those lost to cancer and fighting back against cancer. More than 1,500 teams joined the Relay movements, raised nearly two million dollars and honored more than 700 cancer survivors during ceremonies.

“Thousands of residents joined together with the American Cancer Society to raise funds and awareness in an effort to free the world from the pain and suffering of cancer. They participated, volunteered, raised money and sponsored Relay For Life,” said Michelle Maugeri, Senior Manager for the Society, with offices in Hauppauge. “On behalf of the American Cancer Society Relay For Life, I would like to sincerely thank the communities and schools across the region for their generosity and support.” According to Patti Lestrange Mack, Communications Director for the Society, funds raised help

On Tuesday, July 18th, Massapequa School District residents showed up in full force to let their voices be heard in support of the sixth grade move from elementary school to Berner Middle School. Parents in the town were outraged when a motion to rescind the move was made and passed at the July 13th BOE meeting. At the June 15th BOE meeting, Mr. LaBella agreed to a compromise, allowing the 5th graders to graduate and move to the middle school for 6th grade in September. In addition, that night the BOE proposed a public advisory vote set for January 2018. This vote would allow the

public to have their voices heard regarding the future configuration of our middle school. During the meeting, Mr. La Bella stated he believed in this compromise to help heal the community and he promised he would not reverse his decision. However, on July 13th Mr. Labella broke his promise to the community when Mr. Taylor presented a new resolution to reverse the 6th grade move. Mr. Butler, who was sworn in that evening, along with Mr. Taylor and Mr. LaBella voted to keep elementary schools K-6. By a 3-2 vote, the 6th grade students and teachers will now have to return to their respective

elementary schools come September. Massapequa residents, outraged by this decision, ﬂooded Marjorie Post Park Tuesday night to have their voices heard. Hundreds showed up and waited on line up to an hour to sign a petition to the NYS Commissioner of Education urging her to uphold the February 2016 resolution to move the 6th graders to Berner Middle School as planned. “These kids were promised a program, and to go to Berner Middle School and that promise was ripped away from them on July 13th. We need for them to be there in September,” said Rose Stein.

New Administrators The Massapequa School District recently announced the appointment of two new administrators at Berner Middle School. Beth Mullins was named executive assistant to the

principal. She has worked in the district for 17 years as a middle school English teacher, attendance officer and dean of students. Assuming the role of dean of students is Robert Tucker, who returns to

the school where his career began 20 years ago as a science teacher. He then taught science at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus and was also the attendance officer.
