To honor veterans’ service to our country each year, American flags are placed on the veterans’ graves for Memorial Day. Swimming into Summer Let me begin by extending a fin of appreciation to all those fans who have written in after what I like to call “The Great Snail Debacle.” There were a few condolences on the untimely passing of Squeegee; but, mostly, readers seemed to side with me in my quest to rid my tank of this unwanted aquatic vacuum. Kudos to you all for seeing things my way! On another note, following the intruder’s departure, my Human was horrified to notice that my fins seemed unusually frayed and damaged. Was it stress? Was it the deteriorating water quality due to this creature’s special “cookies”

and the residue they left behind? Or, was it my refusal to be “scooped” out of my underwater oasis into my old bowl for temporary maintenance and cleaning? This last option seems most likely, as I fight my Human every time I see her coming with that cup. I know it only means one thing – bath time. At any rate, when I caught a glimpse of my reflection in the glass, I was truly horrified at the state of my once-luxurious aqua fins. I sulked for days, burrowing into the gravel and hiding behind my plant at the first sign of visitors, not wanting anyone to see me in such a decimated state. But, several weeks later, they seem to be slowly

shaping up and rejuvenating themselves. Hopefully, I’ll be runway ready in another month or so. Speaking of, August 16th will mark my year and a half birthday with my Human. Rumor has it this is also her birthday, so I suppose I’ll have to share my cupcake this time. I guess it’s only fair, seeing as she’s provided such exceptional food and shelter all these months, even including me in the family’s holiday celebrations and such. I hope I get a festive party hat again! ‘Til then, this is Buddy, thanking readers once again for their continuous love and support. Your letters keep me swimming happily - until I find something else to grumble about, of course.

Island Harvest Food Bank will host its 20th-Annual Golf Classic, presented by Petro Home Services, at one of the region’s foremost golf courses, The Creek Club, in Locust Valley, on Thursday, August 4th. The hugely popular fund-raising event will honor Robert “Bob” McMeekin, president and CEO of Interbrand LLC, for his dedication in supporting Island Harvest Food Bank, and numerous other causes that address children in need, the environment, the United States Armed Forces, and first responders. The Classic will begin at 10 a.m. with brunch and registration, be followed by an 11 a.m. shotgun start, and conclude with its Dinner on the Sound awards’ celebration at 6 p.m. Golf registration, which includes the Dinner on the Sound, is $800 per individual golfer, and $3200 for a foursome. Town of Oyster Bay residents looking to cool off from the summer heat are invited to “Learn to Skate” by registering for skating lessons at the Town of Oyster Bay Ice Skating Center, located at Bethpage Community Park. All throughout the year, skating classes for residents are offered at the Ice Skating Center. This summer is a great chance for newcomers interested in learning how to ice skate or for veteran skaters looking to strengthen their abilities. Beginning June 13th, registration for Series 6 (July 5th through August 22nd) will be available at the rink, online (www.TheRinx.com) or by phone at 516.797.4126. The “Learn to Skate” program offers group skating lessons to beginners through advanced levels. Skaters are paired based on age and skill, ranging from

pre-school and basic skills through advanced levels. “Learn to Skate” Series 6 is a seven week program and all classes are 30 minutes in length. For residents, the fee is $135 for the session. For non-residents the fee is $175. Unqua Elementary School’s physical education teachers Michael Dellicurti and Melissa Osborne were recognized for coordinating their school’s highly successful Jump Rope for Heart campaign, an awareness and fundraising program that benefits the American Heart Association. Under their leadership, the school took first place for raising the most funds in Nassau County or nearly $34,000 in the 2014-2015 school year. The teachers were honored by the Nassau Zone of New

York State Association for Health, Physical Education, Recreation and Dance (NYS AHPERD) at its Professional Awards Ceremony at Adelphi University, June 13th. Unqua has a long history as one of the top fundraising elementary schools in the area. In 2011 and 2014, the school placed second in the state. They also raised the most money on Long Island seven years in a row. “We are honored to be recognized for coordinating this special

Students crossed the stage, shaking hands with members of the Board of Education and Central Administration who congratulated them as they received their diplomas. When the last diploma was handed out to graduates, two honorary diplomas were presented, one by Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis to retiring Principal Dr. Williams and the other from Dr. Williams to retiring Dean of Students Patrick Howard. After thunderous applause for their service, Dr. Williams proudly presented the Class of 2016 to the cheering crowd as the new graduates sent their mortarboards flying. Members of the Class of 2016 were awarded a total of $39.4 million in scholarships and will attend Ivy League colleges, such as Cornell University, Dartmouth College, and 163 other colleges and universities across 24 states and Washington D.C. Eight students will venture to locations more than 1,800 miles from Massapequa, including San Diego State University (CA), University of California – Los Angeles, United States Air Force Academy Preparatory School (CO) and University of Colorado at Boulder. Eight students will serve our country in the United States Armed Forces. Five students have enlisted in the Army, Navy or Marine Corp. Three students will attend the United States Air Force Academy, Unites States Merchant Marine Academy and the United States Military Academy at West Point.

The ceremony opened with a performance of “The Star Spangled Banner” by senior members of the Chordettes and Crooners, and College American Sign Language (ASL) students, followed by speeches from Class of 2016 President Jake Rosenblum, General Organization President Christian Bounamassa, Valedictorian Joseph Prusan and Salutatorian Juliet Remi. As Class President, Jake Rosenblum quoted author J.K. Rowlings: “It is impossible to live without failing at something, unless you live so cautiously that you might as well not have lived at all - in which case, you fail by default.” Then challenged his peers to “pursue your dreams and do not let the fear of failure deter you from them.” G. President Christian Bounamassa approached the podium with a selfie stick and took a photo with retiring Principal Dr. Barbara Williams before speaking about the many opportunities Massapequa High School offers students and the great potential his classmates hold for the future.
