Fondness for the Flag Students at Birch Lane Elementary School in the Massapequa School District learned about the evolution of the American flag during the annual Flag Day ceremony on June 14th. A presentation by the Massapequa Elks Club included the pine tree flag which was used by the Continental Army in 1775

and the modern flag that has featured 13 stripes and 50 stars since 1960, as well as several versions in between. The orchestra, band and chorus performed a variety of patriotic tunes including “The StarSpangled Banner,” “Grand Old Flag,” “Yankee Doodle” and more. Raising Funds for Research Natalie is a sophomore at MHS. She worked with her classmates to organize the second annual Ehlers Danlos Awareness Day. Natalie suffers from this rare condition, that causes extensive pain, cardiac, neurological and orthopedic problems. Thanks to MSD administration, Ames and MHS staff for working with her to make this another success. Together with her online donations, Natalie raised

over $1100 this year for EDS research. That bring her two year total donation to $2500+. Natalie hopes to continue spreading awareness throughout the district by holding a third annual Ehlers Danlos Awareness next May and by adding Berner as the third school to participate.

Donation Makes a Difference Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District recently donated $4,000 to the Nassau Suffolk Chapter of the Autism Society of America. The school raised $700 from the puzzle piece campaign in April, which is Autism Awareness Month. Families could make a donation and customize

a paper puzzle piece to be hung in the school. The puzzle piece represents the mystery and complexity of Autism Spectrum Disorder. The donation was matched by secondgrader teacher Jennifer Lidonnici’s family and also by a former Fairfield teacher. A staff fundraiser

whose dream job it was to become a clubhouse reporter for the New York Yankees. Big dreams indeed for a girl who had never held a job outside of a part-time assistant teaching gig at her local dance studio. But that’s what high school was for, to cultivate those lofty goals and give birth to the endless possibilities borne from a college education and our eventual entrance into the great workforce. I often wonder how many of us wound up doing anything comparable to that which we aspired to on that particular day, some 18 years ago. How many ever truly know what they want to be when they grow up? Perhaps we’re not supposed to. Much has changed in the nearly two decades that have elapsed as we spread our wings and went our respective separate ways in the search for a lifetime of fulfillment. For some, college called, degrees were earned and positions accepted at prestigious corporations. For others, the path evolved a bit differently, perhaps in settling down to start

a family and build a home, or to explore other creative outlets and passions en route to a less traditional existence. To each his or her own, as they say. Ten years later, at our first reunion gathering, we reconvened as a class, a bit older and a tad wiser; overall, though, not much seemed to have changed. Looking across the bar at the old familiar faces, it was as if no time had passed. In the blink of an eye, we were back on that field, decked out in our Bulldog green and white, the world at our fingertips. In just two short years, we will likely gather once again, this time at our 20th reunion. How will the stories have evolved? What new tales will we have to share? Will the past still seem as easily within reach as it once was? I have a feeling it will. As they say in my district ~ Once a Bulldog, Always a Bulldog ~ and it’s true. To the graduating Class of 2018 . . . may your memories be just as fond 18 years from now as they are today. Mine certainly are.

As I write these words, the Class of 2018 prepares to march onto the old Kienle Field at Lindenhurst Middle School to the familiar strains of Pomp & Circumstance. In just a few short hours, they will embark on the next chapter of their lives, as proud alumni of Lindy High, the last dozen or so years of schooling an already-fading memory. I remember it like it was yesterday. June 25th, 2000, a Saturday morning. Hundreds of folding chairs lined the old grass field, as our parents and loved ones perched on the wooden bleachers excitedly waiting for the ceremony to begin. Behind the scenes, in the locker room of the gymnasium, I paced nervously in my cap and gown, binder in hand, silently running through the words of my valedictory address. Osteoporosis ( N A P S ) — Osteoporosis—bone loss— is a serious condition that half of all women and many men can expect to develop at some time in their lives. Fortunately, it can be detected and treated. In fact, women who have a bone density scan have 35 percent fewer hip fractures than those who do not. The problem is only 23 percent of eligible patients are scanned. The experts at the National Osteoporosis Foundation (NOF) say that if you’re a woman over 65 or a man over 70 or if you’re over 50, postmenopausal and have risk factors for osteoporosis, you should probably talk to your doctor or other health care provider about getting a bone density test, especially if you’ve never had one. Along with good mental health, MHAW recognizes the importance of physical health. Classes include an array of indoor and outdoor physical activities, as well as the chemical free garden right near their Ronkonkoma facility. In the garden, people learn how to grow their own food while connecting to the natural environment. Vegetables, fruits and herbs are donated to Charlotte’s Table food pantry, open each Wednesday from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m., which serves the broader community. Anyone interested in

People spend their leisure time in various ways, and many would prefer more time to pursue their passions away from the workplace. While they may not be able to create more time in the day, men and women can take various steps to create more time for leisure. Spend free time more wisely. According to the 2015 American Time Use Survey from the U.S. Bureau of Labor Statistics, persons age 15 and over averaged four hours and 59 minutes of leisure time per day. That ﬁgure may come as a surprise to working professionals who feel they never have enough time to pursue their passions. But such people may just be spending their leisure time in ways that don’t incorporate their passions. For instance, the American Time Use Survey found that more than half of the nearly ﬁve hours of leisure time persons 15 and over enjoyed each day was spent watching television. Men and women who want to make the most of their free time can note the amount of time they spend watching television, ultimately skipping their binge watching sessions in favor of pursuing their passions.

cientists and environmentalists have been warning the public for years that honeybees are disappearing at alarming rates. Scientists were initially uncertain in regard to what was decimating bee populations. Even though no single cause is to blame, data has pointed to pesticide use and the mysterious colony collapse disorder, which is a name given to the dwindling colonies seen around the world.

Start by studying bees. Interested beekeepers can begin their journey by reading all they can on beekeeping. The American Bee Journal or backyard beekeeping books and articles are great places to start. Local beekeeping associations also are invaluable resources for information on local bee species and traits. Know the laws. It’s important to get the go-ahead from local authorities before introducing bees into the community. By checking city or town ordinances,

potential beekeepers will know how many hives are allowed and which type of property sizes are amenable and allowable. Get the right supplies. Research can help prospective beekeepers understand the type of equipment they will need. One can purchase this equipment, but some beekeeping organizations may be willing to lend or rent it to interested parties. Hive boxes, bottom boards, a veil, a jacket, a smoker and a top feeder are just some of the supplies needed. Order bees. Bees can be acquired from

other beekeeping enthusiasts or can be ordered online. The bees will need to consist of the queen, drones and worker bees. According to the resource Bees Brothers, a starter set of bees is called a “nuc.” Bee suppliers start selling in the winter for spring swarms. Place the hive. It’s important to set up hives away from foot trafﬁc. In addition, face hives away from strong winds, with the ideal directions being east and south. Hives need sunshine and some shade on summer afternoons, advises BackYardHive. With time, homeowners can become successful beekeepers and do their part to replenish much-needed bee colonies.

Agriculture industries rely on honeybees, especially managed honeybees, to keep commercial crops pollinated and productive. Estimates indicate that roughly one-third of U.S. crops rely on honeybees — accounting for more than $15 billion in crop production. Without bees, the costs of everything from blueberries to apples to broccoli would rise, as farmers would have to use a different, more expensive pollination method.

Even though backyard beehives or bee farms may not be crucial to consumer agriculture, bringing healthy colonies back to various areas is beneﬁcial to the environment overall. If you live with someone who is struggling to hear, then this article is for you. Convincing someone that they have a problem hearing can be a daunting task. Typically the individual with the problem either doesn’t recognize that a problem exists or they don’t realize how bad the problem has become. Hearing loss (the majority of the time) occurs very gradually allowing the individual with the hearing loss to develop systems that in their mind compensate for the hearing loss. Those compensatory measures often include: • Asking friends and family members to repeat information frequently. • Increasing the volume on the radio or TV to a level that’s uncomfortable for individuals with normal hearing. • Turning down competing noise when they’re trying to hear something. For example turn the radio off in the car when they’re trying to hear someone else in the car speaking. • Avoiding settings where they know they’ll struggle to hear for example, movie theatres, parties and restaurants.

HOW TO CONVINCE SOMEONE THAT THEY CAN’T HEAR?

As valuable as travel can be, many people feel they cannot afford to travel. However, there are ways to travel on a budget and still have fun.

We would suggest that you don’t try to convince your significant other, family member or friend that they can’t hear. Instead focus on a compromise, a baseline-hearing test. Everyone should have his or her hearing checked at least once. We’re all used to getting an annual physical. Everything from our weight, to our height to our blood pressure is recorded and compared to both “normative” standards and our personal statistics from previous years. Any changes are noted and if anything appears to be a problem the results and options to resolve the problem are discussed. An annual physical examination can serve one of two purposes: • Provide a source of reassurance that you in fact have no health problems. • Catch health problems before they become serious. Your hearing is no different. The status of your auditory system (all the parts that work together to allow you to hear) including your outer ear, ear canal, eardrum, middle ear and inner ear should be assessed periodically. A baseline test is a great idea for anyone. If you’re positive you have absolutely no problem hearing that may change in a few years. If it does your hearing healthcare professional will have something to compare to any future test results. So stop trying to convince your significant other, friend or family member that they can’t hear. Too often it becomes a battleground lasting for weeks, months or even years. Instead pick up the phone, call our office and make an appointment for you and the individual in your life who needs our services (they just don’t know it yet!)

There’s various reasons to believe that being outdoors can be good for a person’s health. The National Institutes of Health and Harvard Medical School say that, in addition to providing physical beneﬁts, simply spending time in nature in any form can improve mental outlook, boost creativity, elevate mood due to natural light, improve concentration and reduce stress. A study from the St. Louis University School of Medicine also said that spending time outdoors can help a person sleep better. That’s because natural sunlight can set the body’s internal clock.

Dine al fresco. Opt for outdoor seating at a favorite restaurant. This will provide an hour or more to take in the sights and breathe some fresh air while enjoying a meal.

Meet friends at outdoor places. When engaging in recreational activities, plan them at outdoor venues, such as parks, beaches, town centers, boardwalks, and other areas where everyone can have fun and still be outside.

A 2015 survey from Kampgrounds of America (KOA) said camping attracts people looking for an opportunity to explore the many wonders of the environment. The great outdoors affords people an opportunity to recharge in the peace and quiet of natural surroundings. Results from the 2017 North American Camping Report found an increasing number of people say they plan to camp more, and camping is helping to add more balance to a person’s life. Currently, 75 million households in the United States include active campers. Households in western Canada are likely to go camping, and data from Statistics Canada points out that camping rates increase with income. Although there are many ways to camp, tents are often key components of camping trips. Learning to pitch a tent correctly is an important part of successful camping. Here’s how to become a tentpitching pro:

They should be slightly smaller than the area of the tent. 4. Scope out the tent location. Avoid sites littered with sticks, stones, roots or branches. Stay away from low-lying areas that may get soggy in rain storms. Look for natural windbreaks, and place the tent so the side that has the strongest pole structure is facing the wind.

1. Purchase a freestanding tent. While there are many variations to tent designs and ultralight backpackers may prefer a tarp or another non-freestanding device, tents that are able to stand on their own are easier to set up. Many tent designs have two poles and fabric that creates a dome shape and are relatively easy and straightforward to set up in just a few minutes.

5. Make it a team effort. Enlist a helper or two to set up the tent. Ensure all zippers are closed when erecting the tent. Try to push poles through openings instead of pulling on them. Allow for some wiggle room when extending the poles. Guylines should follow the seams of the tent where possible, and lines should be pegged down back to front. Guylines help keep tents sturdy and also keep a rainﬂy away from the tent body to minimize leakage, according to the Appalachian Mountain Club.

2. Practice at home. Before arriving at the campsite, learn to recognize the parts and instructions for your particular tent. Make sure all equipment is present and in working order.

6. Use daylight to your advantage. Set up the tent while it is light outside, and outﬁt it with anything that will be needed in the middle of the night, such as a lantern and other gear.

gave each other during their high school years, and said that’s what made success possible. “We made memories that will live in our hearts and our minds forever,” said senior class President Gillian Murphy. The speakers also thanked their teachers and families, noting the tremendous roles they played in this milestone moment. General Organization President David Letzter said that leaving high school is a unique transition as he and his fellow graduates will all follow different paths. He encouraged them to embrace the change and “find out who we can become.” Principal Patrick DiClemente recognized the students who will be joining a branch of the

military or enrolling at a military institution after graduation. Valedictorian Deborah Lobacarro talked about the choices that she and her fellow graduates make, from the small — deciding what to eat for breakfast in the morning — to the big — deciding where to go to college. The decisions got more complex as they moved from kindergarten to 12th grade, and the older they get, the more empowering their choices become. Medals were awarded to an outstanding student in each academic area. Graduates then were called up one by one to receive their diplomas. Mr. DiClemente asked them to move their tassels from the right to left, but that only lasted a few minutes as soon caps were tossed in the air in celebration.

Ready for the Future “The world is ready for us,” Massapequa High School salutatorian Nicole Leonick told her fellow graduates on June 18th at Hofstra University at the 62nd annual commencement exercises. In their blue caps and gowns, the 593 graduates came together as a class one last time to celebrate the accomplishments of the last 13 years. Guests were treated to a photo montage of senior memories before the graduates entered. Student speakers highlighted numerous academic, athletic and extracurricular achievements, including several during their senior year alone — a county championship for the mock trial team, a state title for the baseball team and a national championship for the robotics team. They recounted the support they

Unqua Elementary School physical education teachers Michael Dellicurti and Melissa Osborne gave students a goal of raising $27,000 for the American Heart Association through the annual Jump Rope for Heart event in April. Not only did they achieve that goal, they exceeded it. Students at the Massapequa elementary school collected $30,315 for the organization dedicated to fighting heart disease and stroke.

As a reward, the entire student body gathered on the basketball courts on June 12th to watch Mr. Dellicurti and Ms. Osborne get hit with pies. Any student who raised at least $200 got to hit one of the teachers with a plate full of whipped cream. The top 10 earners got to pie both teachers, including Sofia Dalton who raised $1,042 and Leah Johnson who collected $1,000. “Unqua students, staff and families continue

to amaze me with their generosity,” Principal Deanna Catapano said. “Each year, more donations are given for the American Heart Association, as well as other foundations we support. I’m honored to be part of such a caring and generous community. A huge thanks goes out to Ms. Osborne and Mr. Dellicurti who make students aware of a healthy lifestyle and promote this wonderful cause and event.”
