They also presented civil law cases on sexual harassment and on contracts dealing with child stars. “Law Day brings the practice of law to life as our top law students argue cases at the highest of standards before real judges,” said Daniel Bachman, Massapequa High School social studies teacher, Mock Trial advisor and coordinator of Law Day. “Students from the law program are genuinely excited to watch and learn
from the best practices of law students and alumni.” Students were judged on poise, knowledge of the law, creativity, and zealous yet courteous advocacy by Hon. William O’Brien, Nassau County Court judge, Hon. Paul Meli, 4th District Court judge, and Massapequa alumni who are practicing attorneys or are currently studying law at Cornell, Hofstra, Binghamton and Seton Hall. Winners of Law Day advanced to argue cases in front of the Massapequa Park Village Court, also part of the law program’s tradition.

In rooms replicating Nassau County courtrooms, more than 60 Massapequa High School law students, dressed in their professional best, argued cases before real judges during the school’s annual Law Day. This real-world simulation of trial law, similar to that of law school, is one of the largest, most inclusive high school law programs on Long Island and a longstanding tradition in the Massapequa School District. Before audiences of aspiring lawyers, Massapequa’s top law students argued a criminal law case on cyber-stalking
CHALLENGER SUPPORT - The Town of Oyster Bay recently joined with players from the Challenger Chiefs to play in a special softball game in support of Challenger Baseball at John J. Burns Town Park, located on Merrick Road in Massapequa. Officials from Challenger Baseball asked Town Supervisor John Venditto to assemble a team of Town employees to play in a friendly game against the Challenger Chiefs, who are a team comprised of special needs players 17 years of age and older. The Town of Oyster Bay has created several fields throughout the Town to accommodate the needs of Challenger Baseball teams.

Scattered Summer Thoughts By: Jamie Lynn Ryan As I write this column, just two days from the summer solstice, I am inspired by several seasonal thoughts… Weather. That great natural occurrence that has the ability to singlehandedly cancel any plans you may have made, no matter how far in advance, with no regard for reservations, ticket purchases, how many people you may have coordinated with… When Mother Nature is compelled to bless us with a torrential thunderstorm, blizzard, blistering heat or any other, more serious, natural disaster, you can say goodbye to your beach day. Society. We seem to enjoy our solitude, even when we are among several thousand of our closest friends in a
stadium or concert arena. As I mentioned in a previous column, I have tickets to about seven upcoming performances over the next several months. In the three shows I have attended so far, it was amazing to look around at the audience and see the great majority on their cell phones, taking “selfies” with friends, surfing Facebook, Instagram… everything but actually listening to the music. Money well spent. Traffic. Long Island is known for its congestion. While summer may bring a bit of respite in the form of school being out of session and some taking their vacation time elsewhere, this is counteracted by those who migrate en masse to the beaches and parks and pools daily, clogging up every major
artery on the Island. Going back to the summer concert scene, if you plan to attend any shows this summer, you had best be prepared to wait, especially as you attempt to exit. Just imagine about 15 lanes merging into two onto Ocean Parkway. I don’t have to – I’ve experienced it more than my fair share already. It’s not pretty. Let’s hope this summer brings its fair share of sunshine (on weekends, preferably, for those of us who work for a living during the week). And if you happen to be in attendance at a concert in the coming weeks, try putting down the phone for a few minutes, focus on the stage and enjoy the moment. Oh, and try to chill getting out of the parking lot. You’re going to be there awhile.

Berner Middle School eighth graders Daniel Annunziato and Anthony Soviero were recognized for their exceptional world language skills and all-around academic excellence by the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers (NYSAFLT). Daniel was the recipient of the 2015 Philip A. Fulvi Love of Language Award and Anthony, as runner up, was presented with a Certificate of Merit. The students were awarded these top honors based on nominations from the entire Long Island and New York City region. Daniel, whose award came with a $50 savings bond, was nominated by his Spanish teacher Janice Kincaid who has taught him the language for two
years. “Daniel is highly successful in all academic areas and shows a particularly exuberant enthusiasm for Spanish,” Kincaid said. “He always goes above and beyond to develop his language skills and has achieved a great level of fluency in two years. He takes the initiative to practice the language with friends and, more significantly, this year when we were studying a unit on health and students had to research a Spanishspeaking non-profit organization, Daniel went beyond the scope of the project and took it upon himself to reach out to the director and converse with him in Spanish to better understand his agency.” In his nomination for Anthony, German teacher
Dean Guarnaschelli, who has taught Anthony the language for two years, said, “Anthony has a gift when it comes to academics, whether learning by himself or in a group situation. Learning German takes not only discipline but also a great deal of imagination. Throughout the years Anthony has shown that he possesses both of these traits and has great potential for college-level study in the future.” Both students were very humbled by the awards and praised their teachers for their excellent instructional skills, acknowledging that they would not have come so far in learning a world language had it not been for their talent, guidance and support.

The Town of Oyster Bay’s Community Park Pools and Harry Tappen Pool will officially open for the 2015 summer season on Saturday, June 20th. Town of Oyster Bay Community Park Pools, located at Bethpage, Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), Plainview-Old Bethpage, and Syosset-Woodbury Community Parks, and Harry Tappen Pool will be open daily until Labor Day on Monday, September 7th. Registration is currently underway at Tappen and the Community Park pools. Early registration at the Community Park Pools takes place from 12 noon until 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays and weekends from noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At Tappen Pool, registration

New York City Police Department Inspector James Guida, who died in the line of duty as a result of metastatic sarcoma, a rare cancer he developed being exposed to toxins while working at the 9/11 site, recently had Merritt Avenue in Massapequa ceremonially renamed and
dedicated in his memory. Members of the Guida family joined with local elected officials at the street sign dedication ceremony and unveiling, which took place on the corner of Merritt Avenue and St. Mark’s Place in Massapequa. The location is near where Inspector

Massapequa High School-Ames Campus freshmen in Denise Baldinger’s Health classes were game on teaching the importance of eating right and staying healthy to Lockhart Elementary School students who came to visit their class for an
interactive lesson. After weeks of researching topics related to good health, nutrition and wellness, the freshmen students created original board games to teach first, second and fourth graders how to lead healthy lives. They promoted ways of
making good choices as the youngsters answered questions and advanced around the game boards. Each game contained nutrition facts and promoted topics such as the recommended food plate for healthy eating.
Red Watch Band Forty-four students — seven from Massapequa High School-Main Campus and 37 from the Ames Campus — are skilled in responding to alcoholrelated emergencies and could potentially save a life. They recently completed the Red Watch Band training program, an initiative spearheaded by students and administrators from Stony Brook University to curb alcohol-related accidents among high school and college students. Participants in the program are required to complete two hours of alcohol emergency training and three hours
of CPR training, and attend follow-up meetings to discuss their experiences, reinforce skills and recruit new student members when training sessions become available. To acknowledge their new skills, students were presented with certificates and red wrist bands to remind them that every second counts in an alcohol-related emergency. Massapequa’s program is coordinated by high school social workers Kimberly Hession of the Ames Campus, and Joanne Waters of the Main Campus, as well as school nurse and certified CPR instructor Kathy Perednia of the

Each of them praised the students for their commitment and dedication to the program. “All of you were here when you needed to be here; the program ran very smoothly thanks to your efforts,” Hession said to an audience of students and their parents. The program is sponsored by Massapequa Takes Action (MTA), a school-community partnership aimed at educating students and parents about the dangers of risky behaviors and promoting activities that empower students to lead safe, healthy lives.

Golf Outing Raises Funds initiative to help pay for a $60 million renovation of the Oceanside Emergency Department, serving all residents of the South Shore from Queens to Suffolk. The expansion project will increase the Emergency Department’s square footage from 16,000 to 30,000 square feet, increasing its overall size by 87% and giving it the necessary room to accommodate a projected 70,000 patient visits each year as well as establishing dedicated areas for behavioral health and pediatric emergencies. The Emergency Department currently sees some 65,000 patients a year but was designed to handle 35,000 annually. “John Cameron has been a long-time friend of South Nassau and his firm has partnered with the hospital on several important projects,” said South Nassau’s president and CEO, Richard J. Murphy. “We are grateful he agreed to be our honoree and help us raise funds for the Emergency Department expansion campaign.” Under Mr. Cameron’s leadership, Cameron Engineering has grown into being one of the region’s premier engineering and planning firms, having received
local, state, and national awards for many of its projects. Cameron Engineering serves the public and private sectors alike in the New York Metropolitan area and beyond and has partnered with South Nassau on many of its major projects including the North Addition, Outpatient Dialysis Center rebuild, and most recently the Long Beach Urgent Care Center. Mr. Cameron (a resident of Rockville Centre, NY) is a licensed professional engineer, marine engineer and a U.S. patent holder. His professional experience includes heavy construction, government, facility operations, consulting engineering, academia, entrepreneurship and business ownership. Mr. Cameron is also the recipient of many personal awards and has been a frequent contributor to the news media, including television, radio and print. He and his wife reside in Rockville Centre as do their two married children and grandchildren. Supporters of South Nassau Communities Hospital raised a record gross total of $329,000 toward the expansion of the hospital’s Emergency Department at its 31st Annual Golf Outing, held Monday on two courses, breaking all previous fundraising records for this event by more than 16 percent. John D. Cameron, Jr., P.E., founder and managing partner of Cameron Engineering & Associates in Woodbury, NY, was the honoree of the outing, which was held at both the Inwood Country Club and The Seawane Club on Monday, June 15th. Aside from the recordsetting money raised, the outing will also be remembered by Brightwater, NY, resident Tim Haggerty for the hole-in-one he recorded on the par 3 5th hole at The Seawane Club that won him a two-year lease on an Audi courtesy of Lynbrook Audi. This is the second consecutive year that South Nassau’s golf outing has been host to a hole-in-one. The money raised by the outing will support South Nassau’s “Emergency Department Expansion Campaign.” The campaign is a five-year, $10 million fundraising

One Town, One Book read tales based on the general topic of Alice in Wonderland, will include a poster and essay contest for interested participants, as well as a screening of the Disney classic. “This year, to further encourage the creativity of our residents, Oyster Bay Reads will once again feature an essay and poster contest through local libraries,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “Anyone interested in participating is invited to create a poster based on their favorite scene from an ‘Alice’ related work. Posters may be submitted to your local library. Essays, which should highlight the writer’s favorite part of their ‘Alice’ selection, can be sent to my office at ralesia@oysterbay-ny.gov, or mailed to my attention at Oyster Bay Town Hall, 54 Audrey Avenue, Oyster Bay NY 11771. Residents of all ages are invited to participate in either contest. The deadline for submissions is Wednesday, August 5th.” The Councilwoman added that information on how to participate in the poster or essay contests is available through the Town’s website, www.oys-
resources for the Massapequa community to continue and expand our efforts that will address the prevention of drug and alcohol use and overdoses. According to the CADCA, “Coalitions are our nation’s most effective vehicle for prevention.” Further, the Center for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that every day, 12 people die as a result of drug overdoses, many attributed to prescription painkillers. These staggering statistics should be of concern to each and every one of us regardless of our age, or the ages of our children. There is no one that is immune from the far reaching consequences of addiction. Massapequa Takes Action is a coalition that has been existence since 1977. Initially formed after the implementation of the Pride Survey, the coalition has maintained its commitment to developing programs that address issues related to alcohol and drug use, and educating children, families and adult community members about risk taking behaviors. The Executive Committee of MTA, which consists of members of the Massapequa School District, YES Community Counseling Center, the PTSA and other concerned community partners have been expanding efforts to plan, develop, and implement promising
programs and best practices to combat this issue. Jamie Bogenshutz, Executive Director of YES commented “this grant is a wonderful opportunity for the members of Massapequa community to come together utilizing the very best of what we know of prevention and intervention strategies to protect and educate our children and every member of our community. We know that we can make extraordinary things happen with the support and expertise of the NYS Office of Substance Abuse Services. She added that “the staggering statistics related to the overdoses and fatalities must serve as a wake-up call to all that call Massapequa their home.” Any member of the community who wishes to be a part of this effort should e-mail massapequatakesaction@ yesccc.org. For the past few years, ‘One Town, One Book,’ the well-established, national program that seeks to challenge communities to read the same book and discuss reactions with friends and families has been a summertime fixture in the Town of Oyster Bay. This year, Town Councilwoman Rebecca Alesia excitedly announces that in the coming summer months, participants will celebrate the 150th anniversary of Alice in Wonderland. “For the past few summers, the Town has sponsored One Town, One Book, with two clear goals in mind: to promote literacy, and to create a greater sense of community within our Town,” Councilwoman Alesia said. “In only a few short years, the program has flourished and helped some to forge an enduring relationship with literature that may not have been there before. In response to the growing number of tragedies that have affected our community the Massapequa Takes Action (MTA) Coalition, in partnership with YES Community Counseling Center (YES) applied for and was awarded a grant from the NY State Office of Alcohol and Substance Abuse Services (OASAS). Governor Cuomo recently announced that “$6.2 million has been awarded to ten community coalitions across New York State to help prevent heroin use, prescription drug abuse, and heroin overdose among adolescents and young adults, and increase awareness about the dangers of these drugs. New York was notified about this new grant funding from the Center of Substance Abuse Prevention, a division of the Federal Substance Abuse and Mental Health Service Administration (SAMHSA), in September 2014. Coalitions receiving the Strategic Prevention Framework-Partnership for Success funding and will use these funds to implement environmental prevention strategies targeting heroin and prescription drug abuse in the 12- to 25-year-old age group in their community.” This highly competitive award, one of ten in NY State and the only one awarded to Long Island, will provide additional

The Cancer Center for Kids (CCFK) at WinthropUniversity Hospital held its Ninth Annual Black and White Ball at Oheka Castle on April 30th, an exquisite evening that raised more than $300,000 to benefit the CCFK’s essential psychosocial programs. The evening began with a warm welcome from Gala Emcee Sophia Hall of WCBS News Radio before Ashley Carlo, Manager at
the CCFK, introduced a compelling new video, 6 Minutes at the CCFK, to the packed house. Mark Weinblatt, MD, Chief, Pediatric Hematology and Oncology Director, Cancer Center for Kids, thanked everyone for their support and described the facility’s focus on superior medicine and the pursuit of new research opportunities. The event honored Donna-Marie Korth, a
philanthropist and partner at Certilman Balin Adler & Hyman, LLP. Dr. Weinblatt presented Ms. Korth with her award, and praised her tireless dedication to giving back to the Center’s children and families. “We can all agree that cancer and kids are two words you never want to hear in the same sentence,” remarked Ms. Korth in her acceptance speech. “But by adding just a few other

Brittney Walsh Memorial Scholarship Presented

Two must participate in high school sports, one from Women’s Track, and one from Women’s Soccer. 4. The third scholarship is offered to a male or female who completes the writing component only. “These students were able to show that they have what it takes to be a high school athlete, but also have a softer side and write about something funny. We also shared a smile. Smiling is one of the most enjoyable and contagious things, and they don’t
come as often anymore, but these helped,” said Brittney’s dad, Tom, at the Senior Awards Ceremony in June. The Brittney Walsh Scholarship Fund has awarded close to $10,000 in the past three years. The Brittney Walsh Memorial Fund recognized three graduating seniors from the Walter G. O’Connell High School. This year’s winners were: Chaukim Peters for Track, Gabrielle Clement for Soccer and Carlos Giaraffa for the Writing Component only. Not long after Brittney’s passing, a fund was set up by a family friend to help with costs. This community-donated money was not used for that, but made into a scholarship fund to help those scholars who share characteristics similar to Brittney. The criteria for the scholarships is simple: 1. The scholar is looking
