The 11th annual Make Music New York festival will be marked by free, outdoor concerts throughout the city, and free piano performances by students at her second annual “Music on the Lawn” celebration hosted on July 24th, 2017 by Massapequa instructor, Sara Chatalbash. “I love the Make Music Festival and have been offering private piano lessons for almost as many years on Long Island,” said Chatalbash, instructor at Chatalbash Lessons and four-time Reflections Music Composition Competition winner. “The festival explores global music genres and inspires many to learn to make music themselves.” While music education has not been removed from the Massapequa school system curriculum, high school students need only one class credit in the arts for graduation. “It’s really fallen to

Massapequa High School’s Active Minds club has created the Graffiti Wall of Gratitude to encourage positive feedback, kindness and courage. A bulletin board in the main hallway was covered in white paper for messages of encouragement. Following the Netflix show “13 Reasons Why,” about a young girl who commits suicide and leaves a tape for each of the 13

students who she blames for her choice, a movement quickly emerged called “13 Reasons Why Not.” The idea is to have young people thank someone who did something nice for him or her. Active Minds, facilitated by social workers Diane Marascia and Joanne Waters, put their own spin on the idea with the Graffiti Wall of Gratitude encouraging students,

Help from a Language Alum To help her World Language students improve their speaking skills, Spanish teacher Janice Kincaid recently brought in a special guest to meet her seventh-grade students at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The final exam includes a speaking section, in which students have to carry on conversations in Spanish on three different topics. Daniel Annunziato, who

graduated from Berner in 2015 after two years of Spanish instruction with Ms. Kincaid, returned to help the students practice for their final. He worked with small groups on fluency. Daniel consistently had the highest average in his class and was also the recipient of Philip A. Fulvi Love of Language Award. During a project in which students had to research charities that

work with either Hispanic communities or Spanishspeaking countries, he was able to personally connect with the director of an organization based in South Florida for his presentation. “He is somebody that the students can look up to,” Ms. Kincaid said. “It’s motivating for them as he’s only recently been through the same process.”

Literature and Technology Essays and tests aren’t the only ways in which students can express their understanding of literature, which is why Robert Joyce, an eighth-grade English language arts teacher at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, makes great use of technology in his classroom. Mr. Joyce will receive the Award for Outstanding Teacher from the International Society for Technology in Education at its upcoming conference in late June. He will be recognized along with educators from other states and countries. The back wall of his second-floor classroom is painted green, allowing the creation of videos using green-screen technology. For an assignment on “12 Angry Men,” his students wrote scripts based on the book, acted it out in front of

the wall and superimposed a courtroom background. They recorded character introductions in costume for “A Midsummer Night’s Dream,” sock puppet videos for “The Diary of Anne Frank” and animations for “The Tell-Tale Heart.” Mr. Joyce said these technology-based projects, which are in addition to traditional writing assignments, became the norm in his classroom following the adoption of the district’s one-to-one Chromebook initiative. Because all students have their own devices, they have the tools to create higher-level work right at their fingertips. “It’s very natural for them to work with these programs and create products like this,” he said. “All of the technology that they’re using in my class, they’ll use in any jobs they have in the future.” Mr. Joyce, who has

taught at Berner for 11 years, began his career in business before becoming an educator. He is a role model for his colleagues for his use of technology in the classroom, and said that teachers should not be afraid of trying new ideas. Students will rise to the challenge, he said, pointing to his own eighth-graders whose work he proudly shares on Twitter. “Mr. Joyce’s instruction meets his students on a platform they understand and enjoy using to learn,” said Principal Jason Esposito. “His use of technology in the classroom inspires his students to dream and create. We are so proud of him for winning this prestigious award and look forward to seeing him continue his work with our children who never cease to amaze us with their ability to soar to the next level.”

Tap shoes laced and ready to go. Costume hung on the doorknob with care. Steps on constant replay in my head {flap, flap, flap, shuffle hop…} all in preparation for the big night, my return to the dance recital stage after a five-year hiatus. Cue the butterflies. I have had a love/ hate relationship with performing for the majority of my twenty years at the studio. On the one hand, there is nothing quite comparable to that moment when the lights come up, the music begins to play and the rush of the moment engulfs you to the point that you simply perform – no overthinking what step comes next, am I smiling too much,

not enough; are my arms graceful, my hands “jazzy”… Of course, there is also that other scenario, that one that plays out in your subconscious the night before – the one where all the carefully rehearsed choreography evaporates from your memory at the most inopportune moment; generally when you happen to be front and center, spotlight squarely on you, smile frozen as you desperately try to ad lib something, anything. I would say I’ve had my share of each extreme through the years. It began with my very first recital at the tender age of six when I flew onstage mid-song, arms flailing, as I tried to catch up with my classmates as

we performed “Somewhere Out There” in our lemon yellow tutus. It ended, some twenty-plus years later, in a “big girl” tutu of silvery sparkle, dancing to “Wizards of Winter,” only this time I made it out for the entire performance. As I write these words, the stage is set – pun intended – for my grand finale tomorrow evening. Two numbers to perform over two acts, including, appropriately enough, the grand finale to “One” from A Chorus Line. One more time in the spotlight, one last night to shine… at least that’s the plan, anyway. Coming Next Week: Curtain Call

In honor of Flag Day, elementary students in the Massapequa School District donned red, white and blue, performed patriotic tunes and learned about one of their country’s most widely recognized symbols. At Birch Lane Elementary School, students in the chorus, band and orchestra came together to perform songs such as “The Star-Spangled Banner,”

“Yankee Doodle” and “America” while onlooking children waved miniature American flags. Members of the Massapequa Elks Club presented historical versions of the flag. “This was an opportunity to celebrate and be proud of our citizenship,” Principal Stephen Aspetti said. “Massapequa has always been a community that prides itself on teaching

children to respect our veterans and our flag.” At Lockhart Elementary School, band director Neal Bellon talked to students about the history of the flag, then led his musicians in patriotic song. Fourthgraders, under the direction of music teacher Kathleen Dyckman performed “You’re a Grand Old Flag” on kazoos.

Young artists from Birch Lane and Fairfield elementary schools in the Massapequa School District had their work selected for an art show at the Massapequa Perk coffee house.

This annual spring show features the work of approximately 20 students from each school in first through sixth grade. The students completed their various drawings and paintings under the
