I recently had the pleasure of attending the 2017 Press Club of Long Island Media Awards; this year, not only as a member of the Board of Directors, but as an award recipient. ourselves as somewhat of a “hybrid” publication; far more news content than a shopper, but without the editorial staff of, say, a subscription-based community newspaper like those found in so many small towns in our area. While this description might be confusing to some, upon further explanation at the awards dinner, I saw the familiar nod of recognition – oh, that’s a pretty nice little niche you have there… Yes, yes it is. As such, we invite the readers, those community members whom we serve, to contribute their own happenings, photos, upcoming events and more – all with the notion that, at no cost to them, they can be a part of our next publication. Parents, teachers, coaches and scouting leaders are all welcome to participate in publicizing those individual
accomplishments they work so diligently to help achieve. I remember being a student myself back at the end of high school and having my mom drop my graduation announcement off at the old office on Hoffman Avenue in Lindenhurst knowing that, the following week, I would receive my copy of “The South Bay” and find my picture inside. How exciting to be a part of the hometown paper; and to share the good news with all my friends and neighbors. The world of journalism is a broad one indeed, one that takes in many different styles and degrees of substance, and in the end provides a little something for everyone. This is our goal at South Bay’s Neighbor Newspapers each and every week, and we hope that you – as readers – can always find something you enjoy within these pages.

Dennis O’Brien, an eighth-grader at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District, received the Philip A. Fulvi Love of Language Merit Award from the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers. He was nominated by his Spanish teacher for the past two years, Janice Kincaid. The award is presented to students who achieve a highgrade point average in their World Language classes and demonstrate a strong interest in the language. Ms. Kincaid explained that Dennis speaks in Spanish even when not required, and has completed several advanced writing assignments including a science fiction story. She said the award recognized him for his “creativity and spontaneity” in the use of his new Spanish language skills. Dennis added that he sees the value in learning one of the most common languages in the world.

One School, One Book Initiative The One School, One Book initiative at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District touches all subject areas, including physical education which recently hosted a walkathon fundraiser. It was the culminating event of this year’s study of Shelley Pearsall’s book “The Seventh Most Important Thing.” Every student and staff member received a copy of the book, and numerous activities
and classroom discussions were held throughout the year, including a visit by the author in December. During physical education classes on May 31st and June 1st, students walked for about a halfhour and also were able to make a $586 donation to the Massapequa-based Yes Community Counseling Center. Teacher Ed Hoffman said that each year the school chooses an organization that fits into the theme of the
respective book. The main character in “The Seventh Most Important Thing” is a young man who needs guidance and counseling to make good decisions. Mr. Hoffman added that students at Berner learn the value of giving back to their community and have many opportunities to do so through fundraisers, charitable drives or their participation in servicebased clubs.
Extraordinary Effort by ECHO Massapequa High School’s Team ECHO recently hosted its first benefit concert, 5Alive, which raised $3,000 for Winthrop University Hospital’s Cancer Center for Kids. The night was filled with joyful and inspirational music performed by Massapequa students, along with information about causes and cures
for cancer. Information and inspiration is 5Alive’s touchstone. Team ECHO’s overall mission is to increase awareness about the farreaching concerns of environmental toxicity affecting Massapequa. Students get involved with all facets of their natural home — the surrounding air, water, soil, species and the people of Massapequa
and the surrounding region. The students designed an interactive Story Box, full of inspirational stories, poems and pictures and rich with plots about relatable characters developed for a elementarylevel audience, and gifted to the waiting room at Winthrop Hospital.

Character, scholarship, leadership, citizenship and service were the traits exemplified by 325 eighthgraders who were inducted into the National Junior Honor Society on May 23rd at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District. The students were selected for achieving a grade-point average of at least 90 and for their involvement in extracurricular activities and community service. Principal Jason Esposito
said they have “done all of the right things” and persevered when faced with challenges. He also spoke of the support they have received from their teachers, families and friends. Other speakers included Assistant to the Superintendent for Curriculum and Instruction Dr. Thomas Fasano, and advisers Danielle Kennedy and Heather Yandoli. The inductees will serve as members of

NJHS Induction NJHS as ninth-graders at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus, where they will be expected to continue to uphold the core values of the organization. The Ames chapter participates in numerous community service activities including food, toy and coat drives, letters to troops and charitable fundraisers. More than 40 World Language students from the Massapequa School District have been recognized for outstanding performance on the 2017 National Spanish Examination for high school students. The exam, sponsored by the American Association of Teachers of Spanish and Portuguese, tested knowledge of vocabulary and grammar, as well as communication ability through listening and reading comprehension. At Massapequa High School’s main campus, Gold Medal winners were sophomore Samantha Sivert in the Level 3 class and junior Matthew Schector in the Level 4 class. Receiving Silver Medal awards were
sophomores Antoinette Corigliano and Nicole Horn, juniors Liam Curran, Liam Higgins, Christina Langan, Deborah Lobaccaro, Elizabeth Schafer and Krystal Wheaton, and seniors Emily Hanley and Catherine Testaverde. Town of Oyster Bay Councilman Thomas P. Hand is proud to announce that Town seniors can enjoy a variety of programs as participants in the Town’s Senior Summer Recreation Program. Yoga, dance instruction, and aquatics are just some of the activities seniors can enjoy as part of this year’s program, which runs from July 6th to September 1st. “The Town’s Senior Summer Recreation program offers our residents many great summer activities, spread
out at various Town facilities,” Councilman Hand said. “I invite our senior residents to participate in these summer activities, where they can enjoy great activities while enjoying the company of others and having a wonderful time.” Programs are held Mondays through Fridays at various Town facilities, including the community centers at Marjorie Post, Plainview-Old Bethpage, and Syosset-Woodbury Community Parks, as well as in Hicksville, Bethpage,
and the Garrick Center in Massapequa. Activities include various gaming such as Bingo and bridge, ballroom dancing, yoga, tai chi, line dancing, painting and trips. The race will continue on Park Boulevard, enter Mansfield Park at Walker Street and proceed south on the bike path to Clark Boulevard continuing to the finish line at Lakeshore Drive at Brady Park. Awards will be presented to the first male and female finishers from Massapequa Park in addition to other awards.

It seems as though it’s finally safe to say that summer is approaching and everything is in full bloom in our beautiful Village. The winter was not as harsh as was predicted by the Farmer’s Almanac and, thankfully, we came in under budget with our snow removal costs. There is evidence of a stronger economy here on Long Island and we have seen a great increase in the number of permit requests for home improvement projects. This is always an encouraging sign and it reflects the care and pride that our residents take in their properties. On our end, we are continuing with our beautification projects and have already begun the road improvements that we have budgeted for this upcoming fiscal year. We are very proud of our new playground at Brady Park. Please stop by with your family and enjoy! One can take a stroll along our business districts to see that we have many new merchants who have chosen our Village as their new home. There are many new eateries and retail shops. As always, we encourage everyone to shop locally and support them whenever you can. We welcome all of our new residential neighbors who have moved in this year. We invite you all to visit our website which has a lot of pertinent information as well as the listing of our codes and ordinances, which you may find helpful. Village Street Fair: August 6th The annual Village Street Fair will be held August 6th. Residents are invited to take part in the festivities, meet neighbors and friends, and enjoy the day. For further information please call Village Hall at 798-0244 ext. 111.
Yard waste which consists of grass clippings, weeds, leaves, tree trimmings/branches/twigs, hedge and shrub clippings, small roots and other garden/yard waste are now collected by the Town of Oyster Bay Sanitation crews on Thursday. Regular S.O.R.T. crews will collect the contents of your recycling pail, newspapers, junk mail, etc. Sanitation crews will come around the same day to collect yard waste. As a reminder Tuesday and Friday are the regular Sanitation collection days.

Village to Accept Applications for Whitewood Landing
The Village of Massapequa Park will accept applications for Whitewood Landing during the month of August. Anyone who applied previously must renew his or her application in order to remain eligible for occupancy. Whitewood Landing is a Senior Housing Complex located on Whitewood Drive in Massapequa Park. Under the Village’s guidelines, applications will be accepted each August and the waiting list is updated to allow residents of Massapequa Park with the longest length of residency to be eligible for these units. The Massapequa School District Board of Education permanently welcomed 23 people to the family after granting them tenure at the May 18th meeting. The staff members successfully completed their probationary periods. Administrators receiving tenure were East Lake Elementary School Assistant Principal Bryan Piotrowski, Executive Assistant for Guidance Paul Weber and Secondary Committee on Special Education Chairwoman Michelle Provenzano. ARTWORK SHOWCASE - Grace Pre-K students recently hosted an Art Show where students had a chance to show teachers, parents and relatives their work. These young artists were so proud of their masterpieces on display. In class, the students were introduced to van Gogh, Monet, Picasso and more. They learned about the artists and their styles of paintings.
Registration is open for the Massapequa School District’s summer programs, which includes recreation, sports camps and fine arts courses. Summer Recreation will be held for five weeks beginning Monday, July 10th. The elementary program is for students entering kindergarten through sixth grade in September. It will be held from from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at each elementary school. Activities include outdoor games, arts and crafts, sports, movies and weekly field trips. The program concludes with a talent show and art exhibit on Aug. 11th. The cost is $105 per week or $420 for the full program, with discounts for multiple children in a family. The teen center program
is for students entering seventh and eighth grade and will be held at the Ames Campus on weekdays from 8:30 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. There will be a game room, sports, arts and crafts center, and weekly field trips. The cost is $85 per week or $335 for the full program. Sports Camps begin the week of June 26th with baseball, boys soccer and speed, agility and conditioning. Other weeklong camps to follow in July include girls and boys basketball, cheerleading, field hockey, football, golf, gymnastics, girls and boys lacrosse, softball, girls and boys volleyball and wrestling. The Summer Fine Arts program, which begins on July 10th, features a variety of classes
in instrumental music, theater and the visual arts taught by Massapequa School District teachers. A new class in Celtic fiddling compliments existing popular courses such as acoustic guitar, iPad Claymation, musical theater and many more. All camps run either one or two weeks, and conclude with an informal performance or exhibit. Programs are open only to students living within the district’s boundaries. Town Pool Upgrades Oyster Bay Town residents can expect some upgrades at Town pools this summer, according to Town Councilwoman Michele M. Johnson. “As a mother with young children, I appreciate the opportunity our pools bring for our children to recreate and keep cool all summer long,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Spending a day at one of our Town pools provides a wonderful way to connect with family and friends while enjoying the amenities provided at our top-rate facilities.” Residents visiting our community pools, including Marjorie R. Post
in Massapequa, SyossetWoodbury, Bethpage, and Plainview-Old Bethpage, will see some enhancements as we prepare for the swimming season,” Councilwoman Johnson said. “Upgrades will include new chairs throughout all facilities, both lounge chairs and stackable dining chairs.” The Councilwoman further noted that all community pool locations will be receiving new accessories to assist those looking to shield from the sun. “All pool decks will be receiving 50x20 foot cantilever sun shades, which will allow those
looking for a break from the sun to enjoy some relaxing time in one of our new lounge chairs,” Councilwoman Johnson said. Councilwoman Johnson noted that pools will be open from June 24th through Labor Day. Registration for season memberships is currently underway. as Henry “Box” Brown, William and Ellen Craft, Harriet Jacobs and Robert Smalls, who are known for their daring attempts at freedom and subsequent success as free individuals. Students were challenged to work together to navigate a series of obstacles and clues to open five different types of locks. Opening each lock required understanding of the precepts, terms and vocabulary associated with the lesson. Stops along their journeys offered challenging clues which led them to meet either their conductor, a compassionate
sympathizer, or, if not careful, a slave catcher intent on reaping a handsome reward for their capture and return. When the group evaded capture, they were tasked with mapping their route on the Underground Railroad and completing their passage north. The removal of all locks was symbolic of the fugitive slaves breaking free from the bonds of slavery. Inside each box, students found a copy of the official U.S. order freeing the slaves, a short biography of the person they were running for and a prize awarded by their teacher.

With the help of the library media specialists, students are making Google Slide presentations, videos using green-screen technology and stop-motion animation movies. “The award from Nassau BOCES reflects our commitment to ensure that the library is a place where all students can innovate,” said Mr. Kemnitzer, who added that he shares the award with all of the district’s 13 library media specialists. “Massapequa’s libraries are spaces that are inviting to children and everyone has the opportunity here to find his or her own voice.” Mr. Kemnitzer has worked in the district for seven years. He was
the executive assistant to the principal at Berner Middle School for five years before moving into his current position. In addition to supervising the libraries, he is involved in the implementation of the one-to-one Chromebook initiative and supports the integration of technology into all areas of the curriculum. “Ed understands that librarians are powerful, that we support everyone, that we are adaptable, always growing and, most of all, essential,” said Evangeline King, who nominated Mr. Kemnitzer for the award along with fellow Ames Campus library media specialist Alex Norden. “Ed encourages us to grow and gives us the tools to do it, introducing us to incredible new technologies, and providing the support to learn how to use them.” The changes to the library would not be possible, Mr. Kemnitzer said, without the support of the board of education, Superintendent Lucille F. Iconis and the central administrators, and the principals and assistant principals.

Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School hosted a Memorial Day program on May 25th. Guests included veterans, board of education members, district administrators and local elected officials. The band and orchestra played patriotic songs
including “Appalachian Hymn,” “America the Beautiful,” “The StarSpangled Banner,” “Taps” and “You’re a Grand Old Flag.” Student presenters from fourth through sixth grade spoke about the history and meaning of Memorial Day, President John F. Kennedy’s
proclamation, why the flag is flown at half-staff, the story of “Taps,” the significance of red poppies and the national moment of remembrance. Ed Kemnitzer, the executive assistant for technology integration of curriculum support and development in the Massapequa School District, has been named the Administrator of the Year by the Nassau BOCES School Library System. Mr. Kemnitzer was recognized for his leadership of the district’s library program and overseeing the transformation of those spaces to include more technology. This year, Makerspace centers were added to the six elementary school libraries with STEAM-based resources for students such as robots, circuitry kits, Legos and building blocks, 3-D printers and whiteboard tables. The district has taken a genius hour approach with 20 percent of library instruction devoted to Makerspace. The initiative is also expanding at the secondary level. Help from a Language Alum To help her World Language students improve their speaking skills, Spanish teacher Janice Kincaid recently brought in a special guest to meet her seventh-grade students at Berner Middle
School in the Massapequa School District. The final exam includes a speaking section, in which students have to carry on conversations in Spanish on three different topics. Daniel Annunziato, who
graduated from Berner in 2015 after two years of Spanish instruction with Ms. Kincaid, returned to help the students practice for their final. He worked with small groups on fluency.
Daniel consistently had the highest average in his class and was also the recipient of Philip A. Fulvi Love of Language Award. During a project in which students had to research charities that
work with either Hispanic communities or Spanishspeaking countries, he was able to personally connect with the director of an organization based in South Florida for his presentation.
“He is somebody that the students can look up to,” Ms. Kincaid said. “It’s motivating for them as he’s only recently been through the same process.”
