The tournament has raised nearly $420,000 since its inception in 2005 with the proceeds benefiting the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation (JDRF), the Diabetes Research Foundation, and the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. activities such as tree plantings and park cleanups. Joseph is proud that the club has plans to expand into the Ames Campus. He was also involved in Science Olympiads, has been named an Advanced Placement (AP) Scholar of Distinction for his high achievement on AP exams and is a member of National Honor Society. Joseph says his greatest strength is his work ethic and his greatest weakness his tendency to procrastinate. When he is not in school, he enjoys playing football with friends, traveling with family and volunteering in the pediatric radiology wing at New York Presbyterian Hospital. He is the oldest of four boys who all have similar interests, he says. His advice for future graduates? “High school is very doable if you work hard and study,” he said. “However, don’t get too involved with school that you neglect spending time with your friends.”

Summit Essay Contest. He was a finalist for his essay on “Small Scale Hydropower,” and as a winner in his category for his essay on “Proton Exchange Membranes,” which also garnered him a $2,500 scholarship to Dowling College. He credits science teacher Dr. Paul Hesleitner for always being “open and honest with him when he asked for advice about his research and his helping to expose him to science and technology so that he thought about the subjects in ways that he never had before.” He also enjoyed working on science research in a lab outside of Massapequa High School. Also a source of inspiration was his AP English teacher Mr. Robert Hempel, who made the class read the book “Hot, Flat and Crowded” by Tom Friedman, a book about the damages to the environment. Joseph and a group of students started the environmental awareness initiative, Aerify 3.6, which promotes environmentalism through

Joseph Prusan may have grown up around attorneys but the law bug hasn’t bitten him. As valedictorian of the 593-member class at Massapequa High School, he’s setting his sights on the medical field and looks forward to one day becoming a neuroradiologist practicing somewhere out west. With a grade point average of 99.872, he’s heading to the University of California in Los Angeles in the fall to study bioengineering, a school he chose in part because of the sunny location and because he hopes to gain experience at the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center located on the campus. Joseph found inspiration

in his career path through his experience as a diabetic. “I have always gotten really good care and was intrigued by my doctors and by articles on the condition and finding a cure,” he said. Much of his high school career focused on science research and working on environmental issues, but he also struck a healthy balance between academics and his social life by making time for friends. Through Massapequa High School’s Science Research Program, of which Joseph was a part of since eighth grade as an advanced science student, he conducted research to see if nylon could prevent rust on metal beads and he is currently working with centipedes to see if proteins in their venom can be used as a natural pesticide. As a senior, he will be presenting his project at the district’s 5th Annual Science Symposium, May 26th. As a sophomore and junior, Joseph was recognized by the Dowling College Long Island Youth

Senior citizens, 60 and older, who have a Town

Senior Citizen Beach I.D. Card, obtainable at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee, will be able to obtain a beach sticker at no charge. Disabled Town residents who are receiving disability insurance benefits under the Social Security Act, as well as those who have a permanent disability as certified in writing by a physician, can obtain a free beach sticker after first securing an I.D. card at the Town Clerk’s Office for a one-time fee of $30 plus a $2 photo fee. Massapequa High School Salutatorian Juliet Remi took a random class as a sophomore in high school that wound up framing her future. As a quiet person who shied away from public speaking, she took a chance on an Introduction to Law class that not only transformed her confidence, but set the foundation for her three years in the high school law program and the Mock Trial team. This year, she is President of the Mock Trial team and is the only member who has a role as a prosecuting and a defending attorney. With a 99.851 grade point average, Juliet heads to Colgate in the fall to study political science and gain “a well-rounded liberal arts education that will challenge her to think critically,” she said. She plans to attend law school and become a trial attorney. “The best parts of my high school career have been in the court room,” Juliet said. “I’ve learned so much from the Mock Trial team and made incredible

friendships. I’ve been to the Harvard Mock Trial seminar twice and have also been a semi-finalist in the New York State Bar Association Mock Trial Tournament two years in a row.” The Advanced Placement Scholar with Honor credits her eighth-grade social studies teacher Josee Charvet, who studied law, for first introducing her to law in her class and her Mock Trial advisor and social studies teacher Daniel Bachman, who she says is her mentor who treats his students with mutual respect and opens opportunities for all of his students. Juliet is a member of National Honor Society and has earned National Silver Awards for her proficiency in Spanish. She was one of a handful of students who were selected to ask a question at the recent “Evaluation of Presidential Leadership Symposium” at Hofstra University featuring Ed Rollins, former National Campaign Director to Ronald Reagan, and Howard Dean, former Governor of Vermont, based on the quality of an essay she submitted that had to address the question, “How have the political party debates informed public understanding of the presidential candidates’ leadership qualities and policy positions?”

Aside from her passion with law, Juliet finds inspiration in her older sister, Reneé, who was salutatorian of her college graduating class, studied abroad in college, something Juliet hopes to do, and is now a special education teacher in Hawaii and is going to graduate school for a master’s degree in public administration. Juliet said she has learned how to branch out by her sister’s example. During high school, Juliet was also involved in the Chief’s Challenge Club, which works toward improving school culture and providing community service. She was treasurer of the club for one year. She also played intramural basketball, soccer and volleyball, volunteers at her church and is a member of National Honor Society. Her greatest strength, she said, is her strong work ethic and her weakness is that she tends not to ask for help when she needs it. If she could change anything about high school it would be to get involved earlier and urged upcoming students to “expand their horizons outside their comfort zones; take that random class that you normally wouldn’t consider taking, because you never know where these experiences will lead you.”

The Town of Oyster Bay will reopen the cordoned off areas of Bethpage Community Park, including the tennis courts, playground, and pool area (the pool will reopen as originally scheduled). The Town received confirmation from the NYS Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) that they have completed a thorough evaluation of data from previous site investigations and removal actions in and adjacent to the park, and see no reason that any publicly accessible areas remain closed. “While areas of the park were closed as a safety precaution, we have received notification from the DEC that, together with the NYS Department of Health, they have not identified any remaining contaminant levels within the publicly accessible areas of the Park – including the pool, playground and tennis courts – that would preclude their intended uses,” Supervisor Venditto

said. “As such, these areas will reopen effective Monday morning, May 23rd.” The Supervisor noted that the DEC further indicated its belief that reports of allegedly buried drums on the property were likely removed during the excavation undertaken by the Town a decade ago during the remediation process of a large portion of the park. At that time, the Town removed a large area of buried drum remnants $

While disappointing, it wasn’t until my Human began depositing small “cookies” (algae wafers) into the tank for Squeegee to consume that my irritation set in. Why should this bizarre-looking golden shell of a creature have an even better menu to choose from than me? Here I was, forced to suck down my bland betta pellets, while HE had a giant wafer to inhale. Well, of course I couldn’t handle such a slight, and so, as soon as my Human would leave the room, I would knock Squeegee upside down and drag his cookie to the other side of the tank, where I would happily munch away at it. I think my Human was upset by this, as she kept muttering something about “crumbs” and what a mess I was making.

So, some of you may be wondering how my new pal Squeegee the Snail fared. In short, not well. His stay was brief – less than a week, in fact – and quite unsuccessful. While I may have played a role in his untimely demise, I must say he didn’t seem very lively upon arrival. No matter how many times I tried to greet him {read: head-butted his shell repeatedly}, he never seemed to want to come out and play.

Isn’t that what the purpose of this stupid snail was to begin with? In any case, after four or five days, Squeegee stopped poking his head out of his shell entirely. Maybe it was starvation, since I did consume all his cookies. Maybe it was the concussion I gave him upon initially welcoming him to my abode. Maybe he wasn’t the healthiest snail in the tank to begin with. Whatever the reason, my companion was removed by the Human, with admonitions to “behave” and comments that I was a “little brat” who “couldn’t get along with anyone.” Well, fine then. Cancel the rental notice. This betta prefers to fly solo! Maybe I can still get a couple of those cookies to go though?

Summer Adventures Nassau BOCES and Hofstra University Continuing Education and Hofstra Summer Camps have partnered to offer a variety of exciting, fun educational opportunities for young people in grades 6-11 this summer. Programs cover career exploration, arts, sciences, outdoor education and more. Campers (grades 6-11) can become Marine Biologists in training in the Nassau BOCES Outdoor and Environmental Education program, A Field Study in Marine Biology or get involved with STEM (science, technology, engineering, math) Marine Exploration Technology where teams of campers build an underwater remotely operated vehicle (ROV).

Both programs allow campers to discovery the unique habitats of Caumsett State Historic Park Preserve and the Brookville Outdoor Education site. “The Nassau BOCES/ Hofstra partnership is a huge success due to the combination of stateof-the-art facilities and experienced faculty,” says Hofstra University Senior Associate Dean of Continuing Education Colleen Slattery. “The feedback from campers is terrific, so this year we have added some more new and innovative programs. We look forward to another successful summer!” Other courses offered by Nassau BOCES and Hofstra Summer Camps cover topics including: Athletic Conditioning,

The Nassau County Police Activity League (NCPAL) Special Needs Unit recently hosted approximately 120 special needs athletes as part of the 2016 Special Olympics New York Basketball Tournament at the Town of Oyster Bay Hicksville Athletic Center in Hicksville. The day-long tournament saw a total of 12 basketball teams participate. The tournament concluded with players receiving medals and award ribbons. The morning’s opening ceremony began with NCPAL Special Needs Unit athletes carrying banners as part of the parade of teams. Also participating in the opening ceremony was the Nassau County Police Explorer Color Guard, the newly-formed NCPAL Special Needs cheerleaders led by Erica Meaney and the MacArthur High School Cheerleading team. The F.R.E.E. (Family Residences and Essential Enterprises) players drum corps., led by Brian Calhoun, also performed at the opening ceremonies. This is the only Special Needs drum corps. in the country. The games opened after the athletes recited the Special Olympics Athlete Oath: “Let me win, but if I cannot win, let me be brave in the attempt.” This was the eighth time Nassau County PAL participated in the Long Island Region of Special Olympics New York basketball program and the sixth time it has hosted the tournament. The teams participating in the tournament included the Special Needs Unit Knights; New Hyde Park Knights; Commack Sharks; Long Island Lions; Queens All-Stars; Be the Best; Dream League and the ACDS Thunderbolts.
