Massapequa High School senior Noah Flaum knows chess like few others. The nationally ranked player and member of the Chess Club put on a display when he played a dozen games at once in the cafeteria after school on May 15th. In the open competition, Noah played against teachers and students, including Chess Club members from the high school and the Ames Campus. He went from board to board, making his moves in just a few seconds, and winning his first game in less than five minutes and ultimately claiming victory against all his opponents.

“It’s fun and there’s really no luck involved. It’s all skill,” said Noah, who began playing the game for only a few years after he joined the Chess Club at Ames as a ninth-grader. Since then, he has played in numerous tournaments and achieved the title of candidate master. Every year, the high school hosts a chess demonstration in which someone comes in and plays multiple games at once. In the past, it was always an outside chess master, but because of Noah’s skill level, this was the first time a Massapequa student performed the task that requires great concentration

The King of Chess and memory. “You have to be able to recognize each game and recognize the weaknesses and strengths of each opponent,” said chess club adviser Christopher Weaver. “You don’t have to do that for just one person, but for many people at the same time.” The Chess Club meets twice a week. Students play for up to three hours in which they analyze their games and discuss strategies. They also play against other schools and this year’s team, led by Noah, made the playoffs and finished fifth in the county.

In 1967, a group of Massapequa artists formed a group called the South Shore Educational Art League (SEAL). They met each week to paint and sculpt and share their love of art. In 1978, the group changed its name to the Pequa Art Association. They still meet to paint every Monday at noon at John Burns Park. New members are always welcomed. During the month of June, the group will hold its 50th Anniversary Exhibit at Massapequa’s Bar Harbour Library. The public is invited to come and view some of the groups’ paintings. HEROIC RESCUE - Local officials recently joined with the United States Coast Guard to commend two Oyster Bay Constables, James Altadonna III and Rob Walles, along with clammer Jeffrey Muglia, who recently helped save the lives of two kayakers. The kayakers capsized and fell into frigid waters off the Great South Bay. Supervisor Saladino proudly presented citations to these local heroes.

Hess Truck Experiment A popular toy made science fun for fifth-graders at Fairfield Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Students used Hess trucks to learn about the laws of motion. The children used smaller, pullback Hess racecars to pull the trucks down the hallway. With

each floor tile conveniently measuring a foot, it was easy to keep track of how far the vehicles traveled. They also added water bottles to the back of the trucks to try the experiment at different weights. Teacher Matthew Cunha said the students were able to study different

properties of motion including speed, friction and inertia. Raising the Flag There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours taken out of the weekend to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in

the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully put away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tonguein-cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are

pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple starting their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

The Makerspace Program and second grade are now getting to experience the hands-on activities that foster innovation, creativity and collaboration. “It’s really cool that you get to make things and try out new ideas,” said Unqua Elementary School thirdgrader Jack Birney after visiting Makerspace with his class for the second time in early May. One popular tool is Contraptions, a set of wooden blocks that are used to build ramps, tunnels and bridges to roll a ball through, allowing students

to experience engineering. With Ozobots, children use different colored markers to draw lines, which give commands to the small robots to follow giving them a basic introduction to computer programming. “The students love it and they look forward to Makerspace,” said Unqua third-grade teacher Suzanne Scanio, who noted that students can work independently or cooperatively. “It helps them use their imaginations and it’s learning through play.”

It was a musical day at McKenna Elementary School in the Massapequa School District, which hosted its annual An Evening with the Stars assembly on May 16th to showcase the talents of more than 40 young musicians. Family and friends were invited to an evening performance featuring the flute choir, the jazz band and the Spruce Street Singers, groups comprised of fifth- and sixth-graders. There was also a morning

show for students. The instrumental groups were led by band director Jessica Wyman and the choral group was under the direction of music teacher Brittany Bissonnette. To make the event feel like an awards ceremony, four students served as hosts. Fifth-graders Brendan Savage and Olivia DeCaro and sixth-graders Christopher Schimkus and Sara Ghaly introduced each group and entertained the audience with witty banter and silly jokes.

“We hope that the students come away with a sense of pride and accomplishment in what is essentially a student-run production,” Ms. Wyman said. “All of the performing groups are after-school clubs and we try to get them to the point where a conductor is not needed. We also hope that the younger students in the audience will be inspired to start an instrument or join the chorus when they are old enough.”

participated in the annual event, in which they shared a variety of the talents they honed while attending LIHSA, including dancing, singing and acting. Visual artists also provided artwork. The gala always

features an eclectic range of performances from opera and guitar solos to sketch comedy and modern dance. Ms. Rerecich is a 2005 LIHSA Theatre alumna who recently made her

assistant directorial debut on Theatre Row with the Off-Broadway production The Eternal Space by Justin Rivers. She performed “On the Steps of the Palace” from Into the Woods during the gala.
