Eyes On The Sky forced to park on the median of Ocean Parkway after sitting in traffic for hours. Each year, no matter the conditions, I have been able to capture stunning photographs and, most importantly, to make happy, lasting memories with friends. Sure, it may be a frivolous, fun day at the beach; but ultimately, we are appreciating the grand spectacle of our military aircraft at its finest. It is a beautiful site to behold, one that everyone should make a point of taking in at least once in his or her lives. This weekend, I plan to join the masses in making my way to Jones Beach once again – armed with sunscreen, and several extra layers of clothing – just in case. Happy Summer to all!

At this time of year, I usually write a column on the importance of appreciating Memorial Day for its intended purpose, to honor those who have served and sacrificed. Too easily do we as a society become swept up in the “unofficial summer kickoff” mentality, of BBQs and pool openings and the beginning of beach season. That said, there is one other Memorial Day tradition that I do truly enjoy, which mixes the significance of the occasion with some good oldfashioned fun in the sun. I am speaking of the Jones Beach Air Show, held each year on the Saturday and Sunday of Memorial Day weekend. I’ve been attending the

show for the last seven years or so, enjoying the alternating featured performances of both the Thunderbirds and the Blue Angels. As a member of the press, I was even lucky enough to have the opportunity a few years back to meet and greet the Blue Angels’ pilots at an exclusive preview held at Republic Airport. What an extraordinary experience! The great part is that the show never gets old. The camaraderie of sitting on the sand, eyes to the sky, with tens of thousands of fellow spectators is something special. Over the last several years, I have endured everything from severe sunburns to shivering under layers of clothing, buried under my beach blanket… from breezing right in to a prime oceanfront spot to being

Poetry Slam Alfred G. Berner Middle School’s inaugural Poetry Slam, titled, “Life Is Too Short Not To Speak,” was presented to a packed audience of parents, students and teachers who witnessed the powerful writing and unique voices of 13 Berner students: Lauren Baroletti, Sarah Benedict, Jessica Geyer, Juliette Liebov, Sam Marsh, Dan McGlade, Julianna Mpazicos, Maeve O’Donnell, Pooja Patel, Meaghan Phillips, Tyler Ramos, Gina Rodaligo, and Matthew Smithwick, who was the host. Offering their perspectives on issues such as friendship, love and society’s influence on their growth, the students reminded others that poetry lives inside all of us. “I have had the invaluable opportunity to witness the growth of our writers,” said Ed Kemnitzer, executive assistant to the principal, in his opening remarks. “Tonight, you are going to hear the true voices that exist in our performers’ own survival soup.” Those voices brought the audience to both laughter and tears with their precisely chosen words.

Led by the Poetry Slam Club’s advisor Lindsay Audiino, who teaches English at both Berner and Massapequa High School, the Berner poets met multiple times each week, since October, to write, create, collaborate and perfect their performances. Developing a strong bond with each other, Audiino and the students developed a society of poets committed to their craft. Their hard work paid off and their success remains active

through the conversations of staff, students, and parents. In addition to their successful performance, three students were named winners in the ThinkCERCA National CERCASlam and Poetry Recitation Contest. Tyler Ramos won for “Best Inspirational Poem,” Sam Marsh won for “Best Surreal Poem,” and Juliette Liebov won for “Best Use of Figurative Language.” The name of the winners and their poems will be featured

Massapequa’s Boys Scout Troop 660 helped Massapequa’s Cub Scout Pack 696 learn about camping at the Schiff Scout Reservation in Wading River. The Scouts attended the annual Scout Camporee, a local competition where Scouts from neighboring troops demonstrate scouting skills to earn points towards first, second, or third place. Some of the skills tested were knot tying, fire starting, “iron chef” camp

It is in this very moment where we must take a stand for what we believe in - whether it be happiness, success, traveling, relationships or making a difference. About ninety five percent of people lay dormant on their couch whilst helplessly gulping on their chips of potatoes. They allow life to pass them by, as if they’re going to live for an eternity. And we wonder why our lives are mundane. There is something inside your heart calling out for you to accomplish. It begins with a firing desire, task planning and massive execution. Do not allow the time it will take or any naysayers to back you down toward their advantage points. Why? Because every great outcome began as a microscopic vision. The vision proceeded by getting planted with soil, which took preparation. Next was water and nurturing and some sun - which denotes the action steps it

took to grow. A few months stroll by. The tiny seed transforms into an entity, astounded by others and blossomed to inspire others to aspire to do the same. I believe we are here for a reason. To create, build, make and invent. We are artists. We create how we live day in and day out. You possess the paintbrush of change, possibility and creativity. Part of other experiences occurring in our lives are inevitable; however, how we react is in our control. When there are dark skies, there are the brightest of stars. When there are heavy rains, there are the most breathtaking of rainbows. So, fellow reader, are you planting your seeds on mother earth - the place we call home? Because our bodies are capable of anything. It is our minds we must convince. The resources required are directly in front of us: The natural sun, plentiful water and the soil by which our feet rests. It all starts with one, single seed.

Musicians Perform the most selective choral ensemble, and Berner Middle School eighth-graders Alayna Carroll, an alto, and Maria Leonardi, a soprano, perform with the Nassau Concert Choir. Alexia is an All-Eastern and All-State musician and has been named All-County since fifth grade. She is a member of the high school A Capella Choir and the Chordette Choir and has played supporting roles in the high school musicals.

Both Alayna and Maria are All-County musicians who have taken advantage of the musical opportunities at Berner Middle School, including roles in school musicals and solos in concerts. Alayna is a member of the choral club, Vocal Points, and takes private voice lessons. Maria played the lead in the musical “All Shook Up” won first place among the eighth-grade class in the Berner Idol singing contest. Unqua Elementary School sixth-grader Adriana Kamor, the youngest member from the district, plays the cello in the Nassau String Orchestra. The two-time All-

County musician has also played with the Gemini Youth Orchestra, and this year, performed a level 5 NYSSMA solo. “These students are not only talented, they work extremely hard, and we’re proud of everything they’ve accomplished with MYO this season,” said Nicole Fox, personnel and membership manager of MYO. Students are accepted into MYO based on their execution of a solo piece and a sight-reading excerpt, and rehearse weekly for up to two and a half hours. This season, each student had an average of four performances: three formal concerts and one community performance. The formal concerts were held at Adelphi University Performing Arts Center, Tilles Center for the Performing Arts, Staller Center for the Arts and LeFrak Concert Hall. The community performances included venues such as Parker Jewish Institute, Hempstead House at the Sands Point Preserve and The Feinstein Institute for Medical Research. “We are certainly proud that the quality of our music program and our educators has prepared these students to expand their repertoire of musical opportunities by performing with the Metropolitan Youth Orchestra,” said Dr. David Gaines, the district’s curriculum associate for music, K-12. “Their determination, dedication and commitment are qualities that will propel them to the next level of musical achievement.” Massapequa School District has consistently been recognized for music education excellence and has recently received its sixth consecutive distinction as a “Best Communities for Music Education” by the National Association for Music Merchants (NAMM) Foundation. The district is also one of only three in Nassau County that produced 10 or more All-State musicians.

Six students from the Massapequa School District are making their mark as some of the most formidable student musicians in the region. In addition to performing in music festivals with the best musicians from the county, and in some cases, the state, east coast and nation; they also are performing as members of the selective Metropolitan Youth Orchestra of New York (MYO). In fact, all were invited to be on stage for an MYO concert at Carnegie Hall, May 31st. Massapequa High School senior Angelica Ansbacher, a clarinetist who performs with MYO’s Nassau Principal Orchestra, is an NYSSMA All-State and All-Eastern musician and was selected for All-County ensembles since fifth grade. She is also president of the Massapequa High School chapter of Tri-M Music Honor Society and has honed her musical talent at the New York State Summer School of the Arts School of Orchestral Studies. Bass player Robert Catinella, also a senior, performs with MYO’s Suffolk Principal Orchestra and was also a finalist in the MYO 2014-2015 Concerto and Vocal Competition this winter. His recording of Bottesini’s “Concerto No. 2 in B minor, mvt. 1” was chosen out of more than 30 submissions, which he then played in the competition against four other instrumentalists. He is the second Massapequa High School student to be named an All-National musician by the National Association for Music Education (NAfME). He is also an All-Eastern and an All-State musician, and has been selected for All-County ensembles since fifth grade.
