Memorial Day weekend is upon us and, just like that, the unofficial start to summer beckons. Swimsuits will be unearthed from the back of closets, beach passes affixed to car windows, and bags packed with sunscreen and towels as the great majority of Long Islanders head to one of our local beaches to celebrate the season. For the last seven or so years, I have been attending the Jones Beach Air Show, taking in the breathtaking aerodynamics of the U.S. Navy Blue Angels and the U.S. Air Force Thunderbirds on alternate years. It doesn’t matter how many shows – and pre-show arrivals – I have witnessed; it just never gets old. There is something incredible about witnessing these planes in flight, soaring against the sky in perfect formation.

Of course, Memorial Day weekend is only the beginning, and the hope is that there will be plenty more beautiful beach weekends to enjoy throughout the next several months, although, doesn’t it seem as though the nicest days are reserved for those spent inside the office staring at a computer screen? There is just no predicting Mother Nature, so best to take advantage of whatever rays of sunshine you can as soon as they begin to peek through. Speaking of unpredictable weather, I currently have tickets to about seven or eight concerts at the Jones Beach Theatre this year; fingers crossed that at least a few will be enjoyed under a clear summer sky, sans torrential downpour, lightning storm or any other inclement conditions. While none of my shows have ever been cancelled, there have

been several that pushed the boundaries. Just last summer, in fact, I found myself pondering just how “waterproof,” in fact, my phone was, and whether it was advisable to continue videoing the performance in front of me as sheets of rain streamed down around me. {The answers, in case you were wondering, were: A) not quite as waterproof as expected, and B) not so advisable.} So, enjoy your weekend, whatever it is you choose to do to usher in the summer season. Although the calendar indicates there’s still one month to go, the collective mindset seems to say there’s no need to wait. So slather on that sunscreen, grab your beach bag and dig your toes into the sand as the ocean caresses your feet. Just keep an eye on the sky for any storm clouds approaching.

EDS Awareness Ninth-graders at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus raised awareness for a rare disease, Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome, on May 4th. The school hosted Zebra Day, and students and staff were encouraged to wear black and white that day. EDS syndromes are a group of connective

tissue disorders that have various affects on the body including frequent dislocation of joints, stretchy skin, easy scarring and chronic pain. Student Natalie Dahlquist, who has EDS, organized the fundraiser at Ames. She sold zebra-striped ribbons as a way of raising money for the Ehlers-Danlos

Society. Donations will be used for genetic research, as it takes people with EDS on average 10 years to receive a diagnosis. There is no cure, but symptoms can be managed. “It’s really important to spread awareness,” Natalie said. “These donations are really helpful.”

Fairy tales typically have happy endings, but the conflicts that make those stories interesting were the basis of a series of mock trials at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Sixth-graders in the magnet program designed four fictional trials based on popular fairy tales. They wrote scripts, created evidence, made costumes and played the parts of the judge, defendant, prosecuting and defense

attorneys, and witnesses. There were the cases of Cinderella and the golden slipper, Minion malpractice, the Three Bears vs. Goldilocks and Humpty Dumpty: was it really an accident? Parents who came served as the jury and turned out guilty verdicts in three of the cases. Led by teacher Lisa Gennardo, the students studied law and the judicial process for several weeks. To prepare for their cases, they practiced persuasive

Third-graders recently took a trip to the other side of the world without leaving the comfort of their classrooms at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District. Teachers Annette Ready

and Laura La Torre led a unit on China, part of the social studies curriculum which focuses on cultures around the world. Children from the two classes paired up and used Chromebooks to do research on the country, compiling facts

from various websites and databases. They then completed “All About A Country” posters, which included information on holidays and traditions, population, geographical features and government.

Hoops Contest Massapequa High School hosted its Hoops for Hope fundraiser on May 5, raising approximately $2,900 in memory of a former Massapequa student. The money will go toward the Jacob Brice Memorial Scholarship fund, which presents financial awards to graduating seniors each year. The three-on-three basketball tournament was held in honor of the young man who died in 2013, before his senior year, from complications

from a heart condition and brain cancer. The event, open to students and staff, was organized by Chief’s Challenge, a club with a mission to “encourage kindness, respect and civility.” “Jake was a positive influence on all who knew him,” said high school social worker Joanne Waters, adviser of Chief’s Challenge. “He always had a smile and a friendly way about him that made others feel comfortable when meeting him. The

event in his honor was a huge success and the Brice family was overwhelmed by the generosity and support.” Raffle tickets for gift baskets were sold throughout the week leading up to the tournament with proceeds going toward the scholarship fund. The winning basketball team was the faculty and staff trio of Matt Cunha, David Doring and Pat O’Reilly who dubbed themselves the “Old Timers.”

Pre-K Education A large classroom in Massapequa High School is filled with toys, blocks and puzzles, and an adjoining room has small tables and chairs. Both are covered in pictures of Disney and other popular children’s characters. These are not typical spaces in a high school but are necessary to make the district’s preschool program a success. The Family and Consumer Sciences Department runs the preschool every spring through its Child Study course. High school students interested in careers working with children, such as teaching, psychology or pediatrics, are able to get a hands-on experience in a program that follows all state childcare regulations. The school runs Tuesday through Friday from March through early June. The weeks are split into two sessions, so each preschool student comes twice a week. They are partnered with high school buddies, who play with them, teach them their letters, numbers, shapes and colors, and provide snacks and safe supervision. Taking what they learned from the Child

Development classes in the fall, the high school students create themebased units with art and storybook lessons for the preschoolers, who are divided into four age groups. Teacher Anna Fierro-Gregg said that the objective is for the older students to experience different stages of child development and understand the varied skill levels and learning and thought processes in children who range in age from 3 to 5 ½. Everyone gathers together on the carpet at the beginning of the day to go over the calendar and the weather, and for closing circle at the end. In-between students separate by their age group for lessons or crafts, or for one-on-one time with their buddies. Craft activities are based on the calendar, such as rainbow hats for St. Patrick’s Day, teapot picture frames for Mother’s Day and handprint flags for Memorial Day. Preschoolers get an introduction to science with an Alka-Seltzer rocket experiment and learn about proper nutrition by making MyPlate pictures with food stickers.

The high school students make year-end gifts for their buddies. Junior Jenna DeFina created a coloring book for one young girl by filling it with pictures based on the child’s interests along with a color-by-number guide and crayons. “We are with them for several months and you get close to your buddies,” Jenna said. “They rely on us. Being with them every day is its own reward for me.” Sophomore Eric Shulman said the experience is helping him prepare for a potential career as a psychologist. He said he likes the liveliness of the preschool program and how there’s “always a new moment.” Junior Ashley Smith wants to work in childcare, possibly at nursery school, and learned that patience and a positive attitude is required to be successful in the field. Ms. Fierro-Gregg said that the class not only helps the students decide if certain careers might be right for them, but it gives them experience they can use now in searching for jobs as preschool helpers or summer camp counselors.

high retention rate in the world language program, with a vast majority of students taking courses beyond the one credit required for graduation. According to Mr. Anderson, about 60 percent of seniors continue with language instruction as the district offers Advanced Placement and other college-level courses. He credited a staff of more than 30 teachers who encourage and inspire students to continue their world language studies. There are opportunities for students to develop their skills beyond the classroom, including language clubs and honor societies at the high school level. Students participate in competitive national language exams and go on field trips that expose them to the cultural aspect of their respective languages such as German language students who attend Sprachfest every spring and Mandarin Chinese language learners who visit the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden. The district belongs to the Asia Society’s Confucius Classroom Network, which includes a grant that supports professional development, curriculum resources and field trips. Language teachers are heavily involved in professional organizations and regularly attend or present at conferences. Community outreach is another major part of the program. The department hosts an evening World Language Festival every March. Students have also traveled abroad to perform community service in countries where people

The Massapequa School District is the best of the best for world language education, according to the New York State Association of Foreign Language Teachers. The organization recently announced that Massapequa is the 2017 recipient of the James E. Allen Distinguished Foreign Language Program award. The district was not only chosen as the winner for the New York City-Long Island region, but as the overall state winner. The designation acknowledges the program as “a superb role model for other school districts to follow.” Massapequa offers six languages: American Sign Language, French, German, Italian, Mandarin Chinese and Spanish. This year, the district began a Foreign Language in the Elementary Schools program with 40 minutes of Spanish instruction a week for third-graders. The program will expand to fourth grade next year, along with every-otherday instruction for sixthgraders at Berner Middle School in their chosen language of study. “We’re very honored to be recognized by NYSAFLT,” said William Anderson, curriculum associate for world language and ENL. “This award recognizes the hard work that the teachers put in on a daily basis to inspire their students to acquire a second language. It also recognized the support of Superintendent Lucille Iconis and the board of education in making it a priority to help students become global citizens.” Massapequa boasts a

Fundraiser for St. Jude

YOUNG PEOPLES WORKSHOP - Town of Oyster Bay Supervisor Joseph Saladino, Town Councilman Louis B. Imbroto, Town Clerk James Altadonna, Jr. and Nassau County Legislator James Kennedy recently joined with the Young People’s Cultural Arts Workshop of Massapequa’s staff to celebrate the organizations 50th Anniversary and present them with a citation for their commitment to help better the community. Founded in 1966, the organization provides children with opportunities to discover and enjoy various arts, music and sciences through participation and self-expression.

By knowing their numbers, students at East Lake Elementary School in the Massapequa School District were able to create a big number to donate to St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital. The school raised $6,857.50 to help children who are battling cancer and other deadly diseases. Many of the patients at the hospital are being treated

for the most aggressive childhood cancers. To show their support, East Lake students participated in the St. Jude Math-A-Thon. Students had sponsors make pledges as they completed books filled with gradeappropriate math questions. The top two earners in the school were a pair of kindergartners: Isabella Guzzo who raised

$605, and Ryanne Hilt whose donations totaled $495. “We thank all of the students who participated in the Math-A-Thon and all of the families and community members who donated so generously to this wonderful event,” said math teacher Jean Scavella, who coordinated the event at the school.
