Lisa Gatti is the CEO & Founder of PalO-Mine Equestrian, Inc., a comprehensive therapeutic equine program that uses horses to facilitate growth, learning and healing for individuals with disabilities and for other vulnerable populations. Through persistence, hard work and a passion to serve others, Lisa opened Pal-O-Mine in 1995 as a 501(C)(3) non-profit. Pal-O-Mine grew from having two programs, eight horses and 80 students per week to 11 programs, 25 horses and 400 students per week - and they continue to grow today! Individuals of all ages are welcome to take part in the programs they offer. They operate with five full-time employees, 35 independent contractors and 80 volunteers a week. Their riding instructors have experience with the following diagnoses: Autism Spectrum Disorders, Anxiety Disorders, Sensory Processing Disorder, Attention Deficit Disorder, Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder, Neurological Disorders, Cerebral Palsy, Traumatic Brain Injury, Multiple Sclerosis, Down Syndrome, Spina Bifida, Genetic Disorders and Emotional Disturbances. Every day, they have a different school drop off children at their location to benefit from their organization; they also offer group programs, individual lessons, corporate workshops and a program

They are seeking volunteers in multiple areas of their organization. Volunteers are needed for their Friendly Visiting Program. They ask for one hour a week of your time to visit with an isolated, homebound senior for socialization and companionship (time is flexible). They will match you with a senior based upon your location and interests. Volunteers are also needed for their Ombudservice Program. Volunteers are trained to help seniors living in nursing homes or assisted living facilities understand their rights and help them advocate for themselves. Lastly, volunteers are needed for their Health Insurance Counseling Program. Volunteers inform seniors about Medicare and healthcare options to achieve a higher quality of life. Oldies but Goodies This week, I thought I’d throw it back to a classic from the archives, a column which received quite a bit of positive feedback leading up to last year’s Memorial Day. Reflecting on past traditions always tends to get the creative juices flowing, so to speak, and memories of family gatherings are no exception… There are many Memorial Day weekend traditions that people enjoy. Most of them tend to involve barbecues and beaches, bathing suits and sunbathing. Few take the time to truly appreciate the meaning of the holiday itself. I’ve written in the past of attending the annual service which takes place at Calverton National Cemetery, a mere two hours of the weekend designated to pay respects to those who have come before us and sacrificed so much for this nation. This brought to mind another, perhaps less traditional, “ceremony” which my grandfather and great uncle
used to enact each Memorial Day, and then again at Labor Day. Both veterans themselves, they had held on to their service uniforms and, ill-fitting as they were, would dig them out and don bits and pieces of them each year to take part in the annual “flag raising” in my grandfather’s backyard. For as long as I can remember, there stood a flagpole at one end of the lush green lawn, and from that pole hung Old Glory, proudly waving in the wind, for the entire summer. My grandfather and uncle would unfurl this flag each May and, with a mix of reverence and humor as they paraded in their snug jackets and trousers, would carefully raise it – and then, salute proudly. Come September, this same succession of events would take place in reverse, and the flag would be carefully stored away for another season. As a child, I can’t say I truly understood what was going on, nor did I appreciate the significance of the ordeal. Sure, there was a bit of tongue-in-
cheek humor to go along with the solemnity; but make no mistake; they took it all very seriously. Thankfully, there are pictures from a few of these ceremonies… along with the memories to last a lifetime. Last summer, as my grandparents’ house stood empty for the first time in 56 years, a “For Sale” sign staked on the front lawn, the family gathered one late spring afternoon to begin the process of going through belongings. The ceremonies of days gone by a distant memory at this point, a somewhat tattered flag still hung from the pole. Inspired, the “children” decided to raise a brand new flag, one last time, in honor of my grandfather, and all the wonderful summers spent in that backyard. As for the old flag, the last one my grandfather had hung, I kept it. And each time I drive by the old house, now filled with a new couple just beginning their lives, I look to see if the old flagpole still stands. It does, and the flag remains.

Students in the Career and Community Connections program at Massapequa High School’s Ames Campus are making good use of the Makerspace activities offered in the school library. The ninth-graders are working with different technological resources such as 3D pens, iPads and small robots. Teacher Kathleen Wegener, who
partners with library media specialists Evangeline King and Alex Norden, said the activities help students develop their fine motor, socialization and problemsolving skills. She said she enjoys seeing students master an activity, then help their classmates learn. “It empowers them and it lets them be creative,” Ms. Wegener said. “There’s no right or wrong.”
Students use the 3D pens to make different objects, or create designs on computers, which are then made on a 3D printer. With Ozobots, students draw lines and dots using different color markers to send commands to the small robots. tress affects people from all walks of life, and the causes of stress are as varied as the people it afflicts.
Meditate. When stressed out, men and women should not discount the potential benefits of meditation. Researchers from Johns Hopkins University examined more than 19,000 meditation
studies, ultimately concluding that mindful meditation can ease stresses like anxiety, depression and pain. The APA notes that such meditation has been found to reap immediate benefits, potentially helping people who can find time to meditate during the day to prevent their stress from accumulating throughout a hectic workday. Find time to exercise. The APA notes that research continues to support the notion that exercise is as beneficial to the mind as it is to the body. Exercising several days per week is especially beneficial to mind and body, but even 20-minute exercise sessions, including a walk around the grounds of an office complex or a quick swim during a lunch break, in the midst of stressful days can
help people combat stress for several hours afterward. Delegate more during the day. Work is the third-leading source of stress among Americans. Men and women who feel overworked may benefit by delegating more tasks during their days or simply stepping back and taking on less work. The potential effects on your career of taking on less work will likely pale in comparison to the toll chronic stress, which can contribute to heart disease and stroke, takes on your body. Stress is a part of daily life for many people. But there are several simple and quick ways for stressed out men and women to reduce their stress during the day.

In its 2017 Stress in AmericaTM survey, the American Psychological Association found that the three most common sources of stress were the future of the nation (63 percent), money (62 percent) and work (61 percent). According to the National Institute of Mental Health, routine stress that becomes chronic can result in a host of negative side effects. Such stress can suppress the immune system, disrupt digestion and have an adverse effect on sleep. But men and women who feel stressed at the end of each day need not resign themselves to sleepless nights and/or weakened immune systems. A proactive approach to alleviating stress during the day can help men and women reduce their stress levels and avoid the negative side effects associated with chronic stress.
Walk away. The APA notes that taking a break from a stressor is one of a handful of healthy techniques that research has indicated is a successful way to reduce stress, both in the short- and long-term. If a project at work is proving especially stressful, step away for a short period of time to do something else, whether it’s to go for a brief walk or converse with a coworker about something unrelated to the project. Avoiding the stress entirely, especially if it’s a work project or a bill that must be paid, is not the answer. But a short break from the stressor and thinking about it can provide a new perspective and time to calm down.

Educating oneself about the consequences of unhealthy behaviors, such as smoking, may compel people to overcome their bad habits. A 2015 60 Minutes/Vanity Fair poll found that people tend to be more judgmental of themselves than others when it comes to bad habits. Nearly seven in 10 Americans admitted they judge themselves more than they judge other people. Men and women who are hard on themselves when it comes to their bad habits may want to try some of the following techniques to break those behaviors:
Try something new. When trying to quit a bad habit, having something to do in its place can help. For example, men and women who want to spend less time staring at their devices or watching television can benefit from finding something healthy to do in the hours they would normally be spending online or on the couch. For example, adults may find joining a recreational sports league gets them out of the house on weeknights when they would otherwise be sitting at home watching television. Replacing something that’s perceived as a negative habit or behavior with one that’s considered positive can provide the motivation necessary to kick a bad habit. Figure out what’s triggering your bad habit. Another way to kick a bad habit is to understand what triggers it. Such an understanding can help people develop healthier reactions to the triggers,

ultimately eliminating the bad habit. For example, if stress at the office compels you to smoke a cigarette, you can prepare healthier ways to respond to that stress, such as walking around the office, than heading outside to smoke a cigarette. When necessary, speak to a psychologist about identifying triggers if you cannot identify them on your own. Educate yourself. Adults with especially harmful bad habits, such as excessive alcohol consumption or smoking, may find all the motivation they need to change their behaviors by educating themselves. For instance, smokers may be surprised to learn that, according to the U.S. Department of Health and
Human Services, more than 10 times as many American citizens have died prematurely from cigarette smoking than have died in all the wars fought by the United States combined. The National Institute on Alcohol Abuse and Alcoholism notes that excessive alcohol consumption over a long period of time can cause cardiomyopathy, arrythmia, stroke and high blood pressure. People may recognize that smoking and excessive alcohol consumption are bad for them, but learning just how bad might provide the spark they need to change their ways. Breaking bad habits is seldom easy. But adults who commit to changing their ways can overcome even the worst of habits.

A Little Change For several weeks, students at Lockhart Elementary School in the Massapequa School District threw pennies, nickels, dimes and quarters into a large jar outside the social worker’s office. When the Pennies for Patients campaign was finished, that loose changed totaled $1,540.
The school presented a check in that amount to the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society on April 24th. Campaign manager Kerri Stein accepted the donation and thanked the students for their efforts. She gave the school a gold pennant. “With a small amount of change, when we all work
together, we can make a big change,” she said. Ms. Stein explained that the money would help people across the country who are battling blood cancers. It will fund medical treatment, research for new medications, and comfort items for patients such as toys and blankets.
Sharing Writing Tips Popular children’s author Suzy Kline visited third-graders at Unqua Elementary School in the Massapequa School District on April 24th to help them become better writers. She is best known for the “Horrible Harry” book series. Ms. Kline spoke to the
entire grade during an assembly, then conducted in-class workshops. She shared her own books, as well as those of other authors, to give examples of different writing elements such as setting, plot, character development, and conflict and resolution.
Students were then asked to compose their own stories as she observed and gave pointers. Each child had to envision him or herself as the main character, establish a setting and come up with a plot based upon the character hearing a buzzing noise.

for their donation. The Lorenzo family was honored at the event for their residence being placed on the National Register of Historic Places. In addition to this, Mr. Lorenzo was presented with a special citation by Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino in recognition of

In addition to learning another language, eighth-graders in Janice Kincaid’s Spanish classes at Berner Middle School in the Massapequa School District are also learning how to be good citizens of the world. During the week of May 7th-11th, students sold bracelets during lunch periods to raise money for a pair of charities. Proceeds from the sale of several hundred “pura vida” bracelets, which totaled more than $1,000, will benefit Convoy of Hope and Water for People. COURT OF HONOR - Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino recently An expert on nonprofit honored Christopher Carman of Troop 776 of Massapequa at his Eagle Scout Court organizations spoke to of Honor Ceremony. Eagle Scout is the highest honor a Boy Scout can achieve after completing hours of community service and attaining numerous merit badges. Supervisor Saladino proudly presented Christopher with a citation in recognition of his achievement.
Ms. Kincaid’s eighth-grade Spanish classes about charitable contributions and how to find the right charity to donate to. She showed students how to research different charities to learn how the money is being spent. Ms. Kincaid then charged her students with selecting charities in which at least 80 percent of donations is spent supporting the cause, and ones that benefit people either in Hispanic communities in the United States or in Spanish-speaking countries. After a student vote, they chose Convoy of Hope, a humanitarian

Importance of Charity organization that provides food and water to the impoverished and helps with disaster relief efforts, and Water for People, which provides access to clean drinking water to people in nine countries. “Clean drinking water is important for people to have a good life and be healthy,” said Kristen Froller, who along with Caitlin Hannan and Aly Harding did the initial research on Water for People. Summer Reading Challenge Oyster Bay Town Supervisor Joseph Saladino and Councilwoman Michele Johnson today issued a Summer Reading Challenge to elementary school children throughout the Town, encouraging them to spend some quality time with a good book this summer. Supervisor Saladino
stated, “The Town of Oyster Bay is challenging students to not only spend quality time with friends and family this summer, but also with some good books. Students who read during the summer perform better in their studies in the fall, and we challenge you to pick up some new books from your library
today!” An informational brochure about the Town of Oyster Bay’s Summer Reading Challenge is available, which contains: a list of reading suggestions for students from 1st through 6th grade; a summer calendar to help track your child’s reading progress; and a form to fill
out and return to Town Hall along with the successful reading calendar once 40 days of reading has been completed. Councilwoman Johnson added, “As part of the Town’s Summer Reading Challenge, I encourage children to spend at least 15 minutes a day reading this summer during the
