The Long Island Council on Alcoholism and Drug Dependence (LICADD) will be hosting it’s 4th Annual Tee-Off for Our Teens tournament at the Maidstone Club, East Hampton on Wednesday, June 3rd. Twenty–two foursomes will have the opportunity to play on one of Long Island’s most exclusive courses, enjoy spectacular views and help to support the programs and services LICADD provides to all Long Islanders. The Maidstone Club is a private country club on the Atlantic Ocean in the village of East Hampton. Maidstone Club boasts a private beach, pool, tennis house and club house. The club was founded as a nin-hole course in 1891 and expanded to eighteen holes in 1899. The golf course was originally designed by William H. Tucker and is one of the first 100 golf courses in the United States. Sponsorships are available and include priority tee-off, two tee signs and your corporate banner display. Individual players are $1,250 or $4,000 for a foursome. Registration begins at 11:30 a.m with plenty of time to practice putting and enjoy lunch before the shotgun start at 1 p.m. Early reservations

Residents will soon have an opportunity to enjoy the Town’s beautiful beaches as Tobay, Centre Island, Philip B. Healey at Florence Avenue and Theodore Roosevelt Memorial Beaches will be opening. Beginning May 23rd, four Town beaches will be open on Saturdays and Sundays. On June 20th, all Town beaches will be open daily. Beach lovers can take advantage and enjoy the Town’s magnificent beaches during the weekend before they open full time for the summer. Beach stickers, which allow entrance to all seven Town of Oyster Bay beaches, will be available to residents at the affordable cost of $60. In appreciation for their service, Town residents who are military veterans or active military members, volunteer firefighters of a department within the Town, auxiliary police and members of the Coast Guard Auxiliary will

Too Good for Drugs, which is designed for children in kindergarten through 12th grade, builds students’ resiliency by teaching them how to be socially competent and autonomous problem

solvers. Under the Student Assistance Program (SAP), these resources are available in schools throughout Long Island and continue to expand into new school districts each month. For young people displaying signs of alcohol and drug abuse, Teen Intervene offers a month-long combination of individual and parentpresent counseling sessions focused on charting a different direction that includes abstinence and healthier coping strategies. “Long Islanders remain unaware that the number of teens affected by prescription drug, heroin and alcohol abuse continues to rise each day, and the expanding need for services is staggering,” said LICADD Executive Director Steve Chassman, LCSW, CASAC. “We need our community to become a part of the solution by

flippers crossed), tomorrow will mark Buddy the Betta’s much anticipated 3-month birthday with me. Why such a big fuss for such a tiny milestone? I think it’s fair to say that any landmarks achieved while residing in a fishbowl should be celebrated, don’t you? Other than his uncanny fascination with the ornamental plant he resides beside (well, in, really), he seems perfectly content to swim laps around his bowl, only pausing long enough to inhale a few flakes, chew, and move on. They say that fish do truly come to know their owners over time, and I firmly believe this to be so. The moment I walk into the room, I

don’t even need to flip the light switch before I see my little Buddy, face pressed against the glass, anxiously awaiting my return. Who needs a puppy with a greeting like that, right? Of course, it would be nice to interact on a bit more of a personal level. With this in mind, I decided to briefly dip the tip of my finger into the bowl one night just to see what he would do. Well, let’s just say that anything moving near the surface is assumed to be edible. No sooner had my finger hit the water, then Buddy came zooming over, anxiously pecking. Curious, I decided to do a little research to see A.) if Bettas have actual teeth (they do); B.) if they can harm humans with aforementioned teeth (not so

much); and C.) if I was creating an unsanitary environment by welcoming these tiny Betta “kisses” to my finger. Apparently, as long as you thoroughly wash your hands and don’t immerse your entire hand in the bowl, you can even gently pet your Betta on the back. How sweet! I went on to read that, in most cases, these extremely intelligent fish can even be trained to perform simple tricks, such as “jumping” to get their food, spreading their fins in front of a mirror, and responding to feeding time by waiting in a set spot for the prized flakes. Well, we’ve definitely mastered that last one. On to the rest of the circus tricks! Happy Birthday Buddy. Here’s to many more…

Other projects included anti-bullying campaigns, sending kids to summer camp, oral hygiene, cars for veterans and building homes for Habitat for Humanity. “Each year the fair gets larger,” said School Counselor Tara Bilicki. “Our students have discovered so many ways to help their community. They’re continually adding new projects. Their contributions and the pride they take in community service are overwhelming.” New Service Projects this year included a shelter for homeless, Bethany House and an animal humane program called Adopt Don’t Shop. The Child Development program raised $500 for Bethany House and the Animal Care programs raised over $300 for animals in need.

The inaugural class of Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine, a group of 30 students who helped pioneer a new approach to medical education, graduated Monday at Hofstra University’s John Cranford Adams Playhouse. “This is an historic day,” said Hofstra University President Stuart Rabinowitz. “Four years ago, this gifted group of young men and women began a groundbreaking journey at a new medical school with a unique curriculum that challenges convention. Today, they graduate not just as doctors, but as innovators and leaders who will transform their profession for decades to come.” Established in 2008, the School of Medicine is the first allopathic medical school to open in New York State in more than 40 years. The institution has 2,200 faculty and approximately 280 students, a roster that is expected to grow to 400 by 2016. The school’s innovative curriculum combines basic science with clinical experience from the first day of a student’s training, focusing on patient interaction, interdisciplinary teamwork and community service. Among the innovations is training of all first-year medical students as emergency medical technicians whoride with North Shore-LIJ Health System ambulance crews. “Every graduating class is special, but a medical school’s charter class is truly distinctive,” said Lawrence G. Smith, MD, MACP, founding dean of the School of Medicine. “These students are confident self-starters whose participation helped us to shape and refine the cutting-edge curriculum that would make the School of Medicine a leading center for medical education in the

21st century.” The graduation of the charter class is the crowning achievement in a year of milestones for the School of Medicine, including opening a new state-of-the-art facility, earning full accreditation from the Liaison Committee on Medical Education (LCME), and participation in its first Match Day, which saw 100

percent of the graduating class placed in residencies at some of the most prestigious institutions in the nation. “Monday was the culmination of many hopes and dreams, struggles and success – for our medical students, their families, for Hofstra University and the North Shore-LIJ Health System,” said Michael J. Dowling, president and CEO of the North Shore-LIJ Health System. “We are beaming with pride for the first graduates of the first new allopathic medical school in New York state in more than 40 years.”

Following their commencement, the newly minted physicians will start their post-graduate work at elite institutions across the country, including North ShoreLIJ hospitals. “I think we all realized the potential risks and benefits of being at a new medical school, and some of us were more apprehensive than others,” said Daniel Ohngemach, a member of the charter class who will train for a year in internal medicine before beginning a residency in radiology at North Shore-LIJ Health System. “But I knew that if I stayed true to myself, I would graduate a well-trained physician.” AJ Blood, a fellow graduate and past president of student government, agreed. “I looked at the track record of these institutions [North Shore-LIJ and Hofstra University] and the leadership brought in to begin the School of Medicine, and I saw an amazing opportunity,” said Blood, who is heading to Duke University to train in internal medicine. “I knew that far from a risk, I was being offered a chance to get in at the ground floor of the ‘Google’ of medical schools.” Said Samantha Ruff, who is looking forward to training in surgery at North Shore-LIJ: “The faculty and staff are incredibly supportive and engaged in the students’ development. Throughout my four years, there was never a shortage of faculty ready and willing to support me and my career.” The commencement ceremony also included the bestowing of the Branson Sparks Humanism Award. Sparks, who completed his first year with the charter class, died in 2013.

Justin, Kevin and Mark, who is vice president of the club, competed in the International Business Plan category, the same category as last year. Their project consisted of a 30-page paper and presentation on the overseas expansion of the popular burger chain, Five Guys, to Buenos Aires, Argentina. Colin made his mark in the Principles of Business Management category, which focuses on ethics in the workplace. In that category, Colin was given 10 minutes to determine a way to handle a role-play situation. All four of them presented their work to a panel of judges and were asked a series of questions immediately following the presentation. While the four did not place in their categories in the international tournament, making it to the competition was

an accomplishment in itself and the experience, they said, was “fun and rewarding.” A total of 16 Massapequa students competed in the state competition against 3,000 students. In addition to the four award winners, four others earned medals for placing in the top 10 in their category. They included seniors Vinny Coghill, DECA president, and Jeremy Weiss, as well as juniors John Merz and A.J. Mastrobuoni. Vinny, John and A.J. came in fifth place and were next in line to compete in the international competition if a teammate had to drop out. “The students have worked really hard since September to develop their projects and presentations,” Everitt said. “I am so proud of their achievements and the knowledge they gained through their experiences this year.”

The journey will begin on Sunday, May 24th, at the Montauk Point Lighthouse and will take the seasoned volunteers to the Brooklyn Bridge on Saturday, May 30th. Submitted by Denise M. Poveromo... My neighbor recently found a mother duck who had made a nest in her front yard, in a little garden near a big oak tree. I went over and was amazed to see that no squirrels, dogs, cats, etc. have bothered her! The mother duck sits proudly on the nest she has made with her feathers. There are several eggs she nestles upon each day, and only leaves briefly. I managed to snap a quick shot of her, so as not to scare her. She will probably have the chicks sometime in mid-June. This cute Copiague mama duck is the talk of all the neighbors! We all wait anxiously for the arrival of her babies.

Did you know that drugs affect the teenage brain differently than an adult brain? Or that much of the marijuana distributed in this country is laced with methamphetamine? These startling facts, and much more, were presented to students at Massapequa High School-Ames Campus during a presentation entitled “The Effects of Drugs on Teenage Brains” by Dr. Stephen Dewey, PhD. Dr. Dewey conducts research on the effects of addictive drugs on the human brain at the Center for Neurosciences at the Feinstein Institute for Medical Research at North Shore-LIJ. He explained how the teenage

brain is still forming and how different drugs affect neurotransmitters, such as serotonin and dopamine. Many times, he said, these effects are permanent and come with consequences that will stay with users for the rest of their lives. Dr. Dewey also discussed the latest trends in alcohol abuse among teenagers and college students, particularly fraternities and sororities. Called “eyeing” and “tamping,” both are ways to get alcohol into the bloodstream quickly through various orifices in the body, and the combined irreversible effects range from blindness, sterilization and sepsis, a potentially lifethreatening infection.

Dr. Dewey’s presentation intensified students’ awareness and urgency to make good decisions by bringing to life the lessons Health teachers discuss in class. Using visual displays, students viewed brain scans and photos of drug users and the irreparable damage that was caused by drug abuse. Many students listened intently and asked questions at the end of his presentation. “Remember, the decisions you make will stay with you; you own them,” Principal Patrick DiClemente said to students. “I encourage you to not only control your own environment, but to use your influence to be a positive force for others.”

JUMP ROPE FOR HEART - Students at Birch Lane did much more than jump rope in Physical Education class this month - they saved lives and jumped in honor of people they hold close to their hearts. The students jumped rope for heart to show their commitment to living an active and healthy lifestyle while raising money to help aid in lifesaving research. Birch Lane raised a total of $8,135.44 for the American Heart Association. Thank you to all the students for your participation in this great event. Pool Registration Registration for the Town of Oyster Bay’s pools will begin on Saturday May 23rd. All Town pools will open for the season on Saturday, June 20th. The Town of Oyster Bay has four Community Park pools open to Town of Oyster Bay residents, located at Bethpage, Marjorie R. Post (Massapequa), PlainviewOld Bethpage and SyossetWoodbury Community Parks, as well as Harry Tappen Pool in Glenwood Landing. Beginning on May 23rd, registration will take place daily at all pools. At the Community Park Pools, registration will take place from Noon until 6 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays, Fridays, weekends and holidays, and from noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. At Tappen Pool, registration will take place from Noon until 5 p.m. on Mondays, Wednesdays,

Fridays, weekends and holidays and from Noon until 7 p.m. on Tuesdays and Thursdays. Beginning on June 27th, registration will be held during hours of operation at Tappen Pool and at the four Community Park Pools. Town residents interested in registering for a season pass must bring a copy of their general tax bill with section, block and lot number. Additionally, birth certificates are required for children 16 years of age and under. Enjoying the Town’s pools is just one of the many fun activities available to our Town residents this summer. Look out for our summer guide, which will soon arrive in your mailbox, detailing all the great programs the Town will be offering this summer. Town pools will be open daily from June 20 through Labor Day, Monday,

September 7th. Residents who wish to learn the hours of operation should visit the Town of Oyster Bay website, www.oysterbaytown.com. Swimming lessons will be available to pool members at the Community Park pools, at an additional cost, for members ages five and older. Once a resident joins the pool, they may obtain the paperwork to sign their child up and mail in the registration materials. The Town of Oyster Bay also has a swim team that is available FREE of charge to pool members 6 to 16 years of age in which they can compete against other Nassau County Municipal Swim Conference teams. On April 23rd, North Shore Child & Family Guidance Center hosted a fun exciting new event – a luncheon featuring games (mahjong and canasta), vendor boutiques and a powerful engaging keynote speaker. With more than 175 guests in attendance, the event raised more than $50,000 to support the programs and services of the Guidance Center. The keynote speaker was award-winning journalist Edie Magnus. Ms. Magnus is the Executive Producer of the PBS documentary, Cry for Help, and is currently the Executive Director of Media & Innovation at Mercy College.
